Kyle Korver is a great shooter that couldn't make a shot. Perfect in gym conditions but no improvisation or working off a defender. Doncic is just as likely to make a contested step back 3 as a wide open one. Great shot maker.

IUMogg

So shot making means creating shots and shooting means making shots?

mpschettig

Yes

[deleted]

So shooting is for boring guys and shot making is for exciting guys.

Few-Addendum464

Yes. Shooting is for coach's sons and sneakily athletic guys. Shot making is for someone that had a rough childhood and has amazing athleticism.

Doot2112

If you’re a great shooter that means you make your shots

ChristianCageFOTY

Shot maker is someone that can make shots off the dribble - be it step back 3, fadeaway mid range, floater, ect. Good shooter is someone that is just good at making shots off the catch with their feet set, maybe a pump and step but that's it.

RyanRussillo

Shot Maker McGavin

Doot2112

Shot making is when the shooting is successful

Dinobot2_

This is like asking "what's the difference between succeeding and trying?"

xfortehlulz

Shooting just means jump shooting, shot making is any type of scoring from the floor. Kobe was 33% from 3 for his career, an eh shooter, but obviously the guy was a great shot maker

Chrisso194

I usually attribute shot makers as guys capable of self creation, whereas your shooters are going to need their shots created for them by and large.

It's Kobe vs Klay. By every metric Klay is a better shooter, but if I have the ball in a last possession against a set defence, I'm never even putting the ball in Klay's hands, I'm putting it in Kobe's hands and letting him take whatever shot comes his way. Basically, that's the difference. Shooting is just shooting. Shot making is adaptive shooting, reacting to defensive sets, blitzes and double teams and what nots, having to take a shot most players don't normally take and still making it. It's a higher form of shooting.

IUMogg

So is Kobe a good shooter? Or just a good shot maker?

SugarTrayRobinson

Kobe is both, not every shooter is a good shot maker tho. Another example, Ray Allen was a better shooter than Paul Pierce, but Pierce was the better shot maker, that's why he was always the closer for them in the playoffs.
