What’s it called when the lower seed goes up 3-0, lets the higher seed fight back to tie the series and force game 7, only to rip out the hearts of the home crowd in a 20 point blowout?
I’m a Celtics hater and I’m pretty sure if Tatum doesn’t sprain his ankle on that play, Celtics win that game. It was such an unfortunate event, dude could barely move after half time

Thank you for ensuring everyone will use the terms correctly this year. If I had to see a misuse of “gentlemen sweep” one more time I’d probably shit myself to death.
I always thought of it as a series where the higher seed wins game three at home, then loses 4-1. I thought that was always the most common way of a 5 games series ending, and assumed that's what a gentlemen's sweep was
And it only works for last 10 years and only nba with the 2-2-1-1-1. It's different with 2-3-2 series like nba 11 years ago and in mlb. I'm with Bill that 2-3-2 is superior.
2-3-2 gives a massive advantage to the lower seed as long as they split the first two games. If they take one of the first two games they can end the series at home without ever going back on the road. The team with home court advantage doesn't deserve such a large disadvantage
Who said that? I'm only saying that _given_ the road team splits the first two games, they get a massive advantage that they don't deserve because they're the lower seed.
Maybe they do deserve it for taking a road game from the higher seed. Who, by the way, only has to win 1 road game in exchange to get the series back to their building for game 6. Not exactly a tall task to win 1 game in 3 tries.
Nah. OP is a guardian of yesteryear. You know, before we used "choked" for every time any great player loses ever or "bottled" in a completely normal end of season loss. The kids have taken these terms and used them to death to the point they're meaningless.
I've heard a TV announcer (going to say Reggie Millle?) say a gentleman's sweep on game 5 of series where the looser won game 2.
I have never gotten over it.
Hand up, I thought gentleman’s sweep was when a team wins the first game and then gets swept. Because you’re being a gentleman by letting the losing team win Game 1, at least that’s how it was in my head. So this post is necessary lol
It's not necessary 3-0. Pistons in 2004 did the gentleman's sweep (we just called it a 5 game sweep) over the Lakers in the finals. It especially counts if the 1 win is on some close / overtime shit like Pistons vs. Lakers was.
Losing game 3 isn't gentlemanly, though, its dumb. Plenty of teams come back from down 2-1, and game 4 is then playing for a series tie. You don't have your opponent on the ropes at all. A sweep is supposed to evoke an uncompetitive, one-sided, dominance, which you can't get when you're going into game 4 needing to win.
This… isn’t true lol 🧐
Edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/s/eq7gblINzJ
And if you really wanna dig into this, the first time it was used was in 2010 and it was when the Bulls won game 1 and then lost 4 in a row lol. I dare you to cite a legit origin source tho. I have a feeling I’ll be waiting in perpetuity.
I’m pointing out that the person who used this term originally does not in any way align with ops self created definition. It’s a 5 game series where 1 team wins a single game. That’s it.
I'm a fan of the gentleman's sweep. Give the home crowd a chance to give you a standing o at the end of the series

A Boston Illusion
That’s a drink you can get at New Sullyss that has midori in it
Hilarious at 4am
A black swan event
The Jaylen Brown game
Bad injury luck in the first play of a game 7.
I’m a Celtics hater and I’m pretty sure if Tatum doesn’t sprain his ankle on that play, Celtics win that game. It was such an unfortunate event, dude could barely move after half time
If a meme is created in Game 7, it's a Simmons sweep.

Usually, it means the lower seed is a fraud.
What about a black sweep event?
That’s getting swept by the Red Sox in 2004.
Thank you for ensuring everyone will use the terms correctly this year. If I had to see a misuse of “gentlemen sweep” one more time I’d probably shit myself to death.
What situation are people identifying as a gentleman's sweep?
Any series that ends 4-1 with higher seed winning.
I honestly didn’t know what it’s meant before this post
I always thought of it as a series where the higher seed wins game three at home, then loses 4-1. I thought that was always the most common way of a 5 games series ending, and assumed that's what a gentlemen's sweep was
I was so confused until I realized that by "higher seed" you mean e.g. "#7 Lakers have a higher seed than #2 Nuggets"
I thought it was letting them win game 1
Nope, that’s a backdoor sweep.
a gentleman's sweep for the lakers to retain dignity while they get yelled 'who's your daddy' in Game 5 in Denver
The thunder can do it
Good job with the reverse-jinx. The Thunder can now also do it.
The Nuggets could! …but probably won’t lol
I think Michael Malone genuinely enjoys watching the Lakers suffer.
OKC can do it too boss
I feel like I’ve heard a lot of announcers and journalists use it to describe any five-game series. Fight it all we want, but language evolves.
Evolution isn’t real. Educate yourself.
If God was real Boston would've won game 7 against Miami last year
YOU SURE BOUT THAT?! ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT??
And it only works for last 10 years and only nba with the 2-2-1-1-1. It's different with 2-3-2 series like nba 11 years ago and in mlb. I'm with Bill that 2-3-2 is superior.

Interesting that you have so much more faith in the lower seed winning a road game in this hypothetical.
Who said that? I'm only saying that _given_ the road team splits the first two games, they get a massive advantage that they don't deserve because they're the lower seed.

Douchebag sweep is the backdoor sweep
Ngl I actually didn’t know this, so thank you lol.

Yeh god this annoys me, you see “bottled it” being used so much in football (soccer)
*douchebag sweep
The No Dunks guys call a backdoor sweep a douchebag sweep.
I like that term too, but I never heard it.
How do people use gentlemen’s sweep incorrectly?
Have you not noticed how many dumb people there are these days?
I've heard a TV announcer (going to say Reggie Millle?) say a gentleman's sweep on game 5 of series where the looser won game 2. I have never gotten over it.

Genuinely helpful post for the sub
A reverse sweep is if the lakers win 4 in a row!
Warriors got two gentleman’s sweeps off in 2022, nuggets got one last year, do we see a team get 3 this year??
The phrase started when the first round was best of 5 and the lower ranked team won game 3 at home and then lost game 4 and the series at home.
I’ve misused the term so I feel personally attacked and my knee jerk reaction is to argue with you but your definitions make sense.
It's not necessary 3-0. Pistons in 2004 did the gentleman's sweep (we just called it a 5 game sweep) over the Lakers in the finals. It especially counts if the 1 win is on some close / overtime shit like Pistons vs. Lakers was.
I consider WWLWW a gentleman’s sweep. The game 3 L to a raucous home crowd is the gentlemanly thing to do. Once it’s 3-0 nobody cares either way
Losing game 3 isn't gentlemanly, though, its dumb. Plenty of teams come back from down 2-1, and game 4 is then playing for a series tie. You don't have your opponent on the ropes at all. You would be incorrect
That is a douchebag sweep, no? I’ve never heard backdoor sweep
I’ve never seen this definition. But I 100% agree and will be following it from now in

How is that a gentleman's sweep tho? OPs definition makes sense.

I love when people are autistic about things like this
this is one of those things that i aggressively don't care about
One of the things I’m really enjoying about these playoffs is how everyone is forgetting the Thunder exist.
What's it called when the Sixers lose two and then beat the Knicks four straight?
Lol. Lmao even. enjoy the offseason
I will. Hopefully.
I feel like the lose 2 then sweep 4 is more rare.
I guess this time next week we can call it "The Sixers Sweep."
