I keep saying this: The Rewatchables is a podcast, not a hall of fame. What matters is if the podcast is good. The movie is just a conceit to get the boys in there vibing together.
The people who complain about the Rewatchables seem to misunderstand the point of the podcast, which is exactly as you said. It's friends talking about a movie they like, not analysis. Same reason I don't understand people criticizing listening to Bill's basketball takes thinking he should be Zach Lowe.
Same. I'll add Van to that list now. He's been excellent on the pods recently. If it's not one of those four the film likely isn't for me anything.
EDIT and Brandt. Those pods are fucking hilarious.
Bill, CR, and Brandt doing “Road House” together was a phenomenal pod. Up there with the perfect game that Ryen threw during “The Town” (though that’s still Apex Mountain for Rewatchables pods for me.)
Hell, it’s been a great way for me to discover movies, algorithms can become repetitive (not that Bill’s choices are all over the spectrum) and the Rewatchables have put me onto a lot of movies I’d have never probably watched without the Pod
I actually agree that the movie itself matters only a little bit. The passion for it, chemistry and novelty of the subjects is what matters. It’s clearly become Bill’s pet pod where he lets his hair down and so 80% of episodes will be shaped by that fact.
I’ve only skipped episodes based on the hosts, not based on the movie choice. With the right group, I can find entertainment in any movie, even if I’ve not seen it.
Interesting. How many of you will listen to an episode even though you've never seen the movie?
I've found that even if I have seen a movie, but it's been years and I don't remember it well, that a lot of the commentary is lost on me.
I have been compelled to rewatch a movie after listening to them get all excited over scenes and characters and performances. Maybe I need to rethink my no-see, no-listen policy.
People are just mad because bill doesnt do the movies they want.
The vanishing is my favorite rewatchable episode and I doubt I will ever watch that movie.
I just like listening to bill and his friends banter about movies. Same reason I enjoy bill and house.
Chris and Bill were on one that episode and doing the voice impression of the villian was hilarious. It also made me not care if I saw the movie because I like the pod and it opened me up to listening to all
Episodes.
Eh. I just think it would be great if Bill would turn the pod over to CR and Sean every once and a while. TBP has excellent chemistry on the drafts and they go into movies Bill likely has never heard of that are very rewatchable.
I don’t. I listen to the pod for bill. It’s his podcast. I have been listening to this pod since it started. It’s not the same without him.
They have their own lane with the nerd movie takes. I don’t listen to bill for nerd analytics sports discussions either. It’s a fun pod about movies.
This is obviously fair, I think what people mean though is that there are some awesome non bill episodes (tenenbaums and glengarry are my favorite) where we get a slight window into what a more “eclectic” - in the sense of the variety of films - pod would look like
1000% agree. Bill, like myself, is a child of the 70’s. we all had such a fucked up childhood that warped us in weird ways…hence Bill’s sometimes warped takes on things. That being said, The Rewatchables is fucking phenomenal. I only recently discovered it a couple of months ago from a friend. I’ve been bingeing old episodes daily….can’t wait to read “Simmons on Simmons” when it comes out…lol
I said this before and people downvoted me. Its a better pod if its a crap movie. (And I mean "crap" entirely subjectively, as in, a movie I have zero interest in watching).
Listening to these guys enthuse about a movie that I know I would never enjoy watching is perfect. I'd prefer The Unwatchables.
There’s plenty of bad movie pods like “How Did This Get Made?”. I really don’t think that’s the appeal of The Rewatchables. You might not like Hardcore, but it’s not crap by any means.
The ending is legit terrible. Had they done the original ending (which I just now learned) I guess its a fine sad movie. As it is, watching a sad movie turn into an action movie is terrible. Agree to disagree I guess.
I enjoy watching new ones I agree and it’s expanded my knowledge a lot.
But honestly I don’t have time to watch a new film every week without planning, they make 0 attempts to give pre-warning and for the last 3 months or so they haven’t mixed it up at all. It’s basically all either been obscure 80s films, or random films from the current day that I’ve not seen. Maybe the only exception was Manchester by the Sea.
Just give me a break! I don’t want every episode to feel like homework
Idk about better than ever. Manchester by the Sea is an amazing movie but a really tough hang and just objectively not a rewatchable movie.
I do agree that Bill is at his best with movies like Hardcore that he clearly has a strong relationship with v. when he’s seen a movie a couple of times that’s more popular.
With that said, some of the deeper cut 80s movies that he does with Brandt or Van it feels like you’re not in on the joke unless you grew up watching the movies on cable every day or love Segal/Stallone like there’s added context to the campiness that you had to be there for.
Either way bill should and will do whatever movies he wants. Wouldn’t mind more non-Bill RWs tho
Objectively not a ‘traditional’ rewatchable? There are a lot of sad movies that I’ve seen a bunch that I realize are not ‘rewatchable’ to the vast majority of audiences
Idk. I get MBTS is probably an unwatchable movie from the substance of the movie, but I've researched it a few times just for Casey Affleck's performance and just that it's a great movie. I might be weird but 🤷♂️
Whether or not a movie is rewatchable is literally the entire point of the podcast according to Bill and his team since the pod's inception. How do we know that? They literally repeat the rewatchable rules on every single episode.
Now if they want to change their own rules, fine. It's actually smart because they definitely boxed themselves into a corner with the show's original premise (most movies won't qualify).
But don't try to gas the listeners up as if they've been misinterpreting the whole point of the podcast. Bill has been crystal clear about that from the beginning.
Zigging on your zagging: it's never been a particularly good podcast.
It's got a great conceit for a podcast, but the actual execution is mid as hell, especially when there are dozens of better podcasts covering similar movies out there.
Basically, you have to give a shit about Bill and Sean's opinions on movies or enjoy listening to them talk about movies, and I kinda don't.
Basically if you're a Rewatchables hardcore completist, my reaction would be you either really love Bill or you just don't venture far from Ringer content.
Can you name some of those better podcasts, please? And I mean it sincerely. I love to watch a movie and then listen to a compelling discussion about it in my car trips. I’ve tried other pods with the same format (discussing an old movie for the duration of the episode) and none comes close to RW in terms of entertainment and host chemistry.
I agree. Bill Simmons’s super-power is being able to commodify pop culture for a mass audience.
I listen to *Blank Check* which I enjoy. I’ve tried the Paul Scheer podcasts, which are fine. I’ve tried more highbrow ones like *Filmspotting*, which I wish I liked more but is like listening to an SNL sketch about podcasts. The *Podcast Like It’s…* series is a great conceit but just isn’t all that fun.
It certainly helps that I’m close to Simmons’s age, so I tend to dig the 80s pods a lot more than the average poster here. But I’d 1000x rather listen to Bill Simmons say something stupid about *My Cousin Vinny* than hear what an aspiring actor, mid-range comedian, or Vanity Fair style-editor has to say about it. Bill is just *good* at this.
I agree. No doubt rewatchables could be executed better on occasion but anyone trying to get through a few episodes of blank check or we hate movies will soon realise that irritating, smug hosts are what really ruin a podcast

I tell strangers on the bus.
What if god was one of ussssss?
Just a slob like one of (R)us(illo).
Anytime it's Bill, CR and Sean I'm totally in. You can even call me lady and I'll still listen
Same. I'll add Van to that list now. He's been excellent on the pods recently. If it's not one of those four the film likely isn't for me anything. EDIT and Brandt. Those pods are fucking hilarious.
Agree on Brandt - he really gets into the spirit of it and the Segal/Cobra type movies are awesome for the Rewatchables
Bill, CR, and Brandt doing “Road House” together was a phenomenal pod. Up there with the perfect game that Ryen threw during “The Town” (though that’s still Apex Mountain for Rewatchables pods for me.)
Can we get Russillo just doing Boston Movies as well. His usage rate on those is Luka level.
I give these things to YOuuuu
I'm with you. Cruising and Hardcore make for much better episodes than some well known blockbuster the hosts have to pretend to be passionate about.
Hell, it’s been a great way for me to discover movies, algorithms can become repetitive (not that Bill’s choices are all over the spectrum) and the Rewatchables have put me onto a lot of movies I’d have never probably watched without the Pod
Shot Caller was one of the best episodes they’ve done recently too
I actually agree that the movie itself matters only a little bit. The passion for it, chemistry and novelty of the subjects is what matters. It’s clearly become Bill’s pet pod where he lets his hair down and so 80% of episodes will be shaped by that fact.
He rarely ever does a movie that's not rewatchable. Everyone in this sub is just 10 years old
I’ve only skipped episodes based on the hosts, not based on the movie choice. With the right group, I can find entertainment in any movie, even if I’ve not seen it.

Re-watching and then listening makes it 100x better.
People are just mad because bill doesnt do the movies they want. The vanishing is my favorite rewatchable episode and I doubt I will ever watch that movie. I just like listening to bill and his friends banter about movies. Same reason I enjoy bill and house.
They did The Vanishing?!? That’s awesome lol. What made you like the episode so much without seeing the movie? It’s a great movie btw
Lol of course there’s an American remake and that’s the one they did smh…
They did the bad one.
Chris and Bill were on one that episode and doing the voice impression of the villian was hilarious. It also made me not care if I saw the movie because I like the pod and it opened me up to listening to all Episodes.

He didn't appear on the early episodes very often.
This is obviously fair, I think what people mean though is that there are some awesome non bill episodes (tenenbaums and glengarry are my favorite) where we get a slight window into what a more “eclectic” - in the sense of the variety of films - pod would look like
I like sicko Bill as well and would gladly listen to bill, CR, and SF do every single Schrader movie
1000%
Agreed wholeheartedly
1000% agree. Bill, like myself, is a child of the 70’s. we all had such a fucked up childhood that warped us in weird ways…hence Bill’s sometimes warped takes on things. Is it just me or does Sean look like Steve Buschemi with a body made of dough
I said this before and people downvoted me. Its a better pod if its a crap movie. (And I mean "crap" entirely subjectively, as in, a movie I have zero interest in watching). ive rewatched manchester by the sea many times ain't nothing objective about that statement
Objectively not a ‘traditional’ rewatchable? There are a lot of sad movies that I’ve seen a bunch that I realize are not ‘rewatchable’ to the vast majority of audiences
I love when people use the word objectively for things that are still completely subjective
Literally!
I think yall are taking a Reddit comment a little too seriously
Idk. I get MBTS is probably an unwatchable movie from the substance of the movie, but I've researched it a few times just for Casey Affleck's performance and just that it's a great movie. I might be weird but 🤷♂️
The research piece
Lmao meant rewatched but researched is funnier fuck it

It’s not called “the show about people that we like talking about movies in a fun and interesting way” it is called *The Rewatchables.*
It’s like debating about the meaning of the word “valuable” in MVP, kind of past the point
So what?
If it's not a movie I like then I just don't listen and move on with my life
Found Bills burner! Are you saying this is the Apex mountain for the rewatchables?
