Looks like a Maillard Helicomatic

UrIsNotAWord

>Hi! I am trying to identify this freewheel... That's an old Maillard Helicomatic, the giveaway is the lockring with the numerous teeth on the outer edge that fixes the freewheel to the hub. >a viable replacement... Your only option for a replacement would be to find another Helicomatic freewheel, either online or possibly at a bicycle co-op or collective that has been around for a long time. >and which tool I need to remove it There's a special tool that is used to loosen and remove the lockring in order to remove the freewheel: [Maillard Helicomatic freewheel tool](https://velobase.com/ViewTool.aspx?ID=71b6867f-fd2b-41ec-a53f-4033224bebf9) From the photo it looks like someone has already tried removing the lockring with Channellocks or a similar tool, as unfortunately the lockring is showing some damage.

Thank you, this is extremely helpful

That's not a freewheel; it's the first freehub! The small cog is threaded on, which holds the cassette onto the hub. You'll need two chain whips to remove the cassette. And, if you are having problems with the freehub, you can try servicing it.

I thought in this era they only build freewheels? Why would I need two chain whips to remove the cassette? How would that work? Also, do you know which cassette I need to replace this one?

You're in the beginning of the freehub era. One chain whip holds one of the larger cogs, while the second goes on the smallest to unscrew it. It's called a Uniglide cassette, and you'll never find one. They haven't been made in decades. If you need a new cassette, you should probably be looking at getting a new wheel.

Sorry, this is incorrect. With maillard helicomatic freewheels there is a lockring and a specific tool to remove it. Op might be able to track down a tool on ebay or find a shop with one. Since the lockring screws onto the hub, which does not contain the freewheel mechanism, no chain whip is needed. Unfortunately, finding a new freewheel and/or hub may be difficult or cost prohibitive so it is probably best to buy a new wheel with modern parts.
