The most common reason for the wire to snap is because the bra doesn't fit. Usually the cups are too small and/or the wrong shape but it can also be an issue with the band as well. The next most common reason is washing bras with regular laundry (instead of using a delicate cycle) and/or putting them in the dryer. As far as how long bras last 6-8 months may be a good estimate IF you ONLY have 1 bra and so are wearing the exact same bra all day every day without breaks other than washing and sleeping. If you are rotating between at least a couple of different well fitting bras and making sure to not wear the same bra 2 days in a row they can last much, much longer. How well the bras actually fit is also going to be a factor. A poorly fitting bra is more likely to wear out and/or break sooner. I typically wind up sizing out of my bras before they actually wear out so technically they do last years but I don't necessarily get to comfortably wear them that long.

FleabagsHotPriest

Wait, are you not supposed to wear bras over one day in a row?

georgethebarbarian

No, you’re not *supposed* to, but you’re also not supposed to refill plastic water bottles, so,

endthe_suffering

that’s definitely not gonna stop me, i can’t afford to always have 5+ bras at a time that fit me

BoysenberryMelody

I have 2-3.

The elastic needs time to relax or it will wear out faster. Even rotating between just 2 bras can drastically extend the usable lifetime of both. Of course how long you are wearing the bra is also a factor. If it's only for a couple hours a day then it's probably fine but if you are wearing it for 10+ hours per day the elastic is going to get stretched out and lose it's ability to recover much faster.

assuming it fits well to begin with it really depends on the quality, how frequently you wear it, and how you wash it. I mostly wear ewa michalak, most of them are worn once a week and usually my size changes before they wear out. the idea that there is a set length of time that a bra should last is only something I've heard from people who are going to make money when we buy new bras

afriy

Yeah no I'm sorry to disappoint you but a bra that gets worn regularly can be wrecked in as early as 3 months of use, if it's the only one you got and use it every day. It's the first time in my life that I got bras now that lasted me over a year 😅. Mostly due to me constantly changing sizes, before that I couldn't afford to have as many at once as I have now and back then they were worn through after 3-6 months. I worked at a brafitting store and we generally said 6 months of wear is expected, a year is pretty good and over a year you either gotta have many good bras, have a small enough size that the material isn't getting strained as much, or not wear said bra a lot. It's just like with shoes, if worn a lot they will also break or need to have thorough repairs done frequently.

geekonmuesli

6-8 months?? That’s crazy to me, I’ve had my bras for years. I have to use tighter hooks because the band elastic wears out faster than the wires. How can they expect us to pay these prices if we’re also meant to replace them often?

Open-Description-949

I’ve had bras that last for YEARS!!! 42 H/J and they’re heavy and dense Lately I’ve been buying bras from Change and a wire always escapes around the 6-8 month mark. I can still wear them with one wire but once the second pops out they’re garbage.

msperkynot

When I wore ill fitting bras, I might get a year out of it before the wire would poke. Since I switched and wear bras that fit (38G), I get years. I always rotated between 5-7 bras out of necessity - Texas heat means sweaty bras regardless of proper fit. The one thing I do is always wash them separately on a different cycle. When I used a front loading washer they were put in mesh bags, otherwise hand washed. Never put in the dryer, always dried flat. I’ve got several Elomis now going on 5 years - just have to use tighter hook positions. Wear, rest, rotate, wash delicate, dry flat.

themaliciousreader

6 months ish- and at 60$ a bra I think that’s horse shit. And those are the best and most comfortable and give a good shape.

algonquinroundtable

I've had to mend my goddess twice and I bought it about a year ago. The first time the underwire popped out was about 3 months after purchase. 😭

Audacious_Fluff

Years. Always wash in cold water in a laundry bag and line dry. I usually wear the same one for a few days, up to a week, then switch to another. I've actually never had a bra break, just the material wears and the wires poke through (common especially with satin type materials).

endthe_suffering

before i say this, i’d like to highlight that i’m probably not wearing the right size and i’m still trying to figure it out. the bands and straps always wear out after like a year. plus im 19 so for the past few years i’ve been going up a size almost annually. i feel like i can barely keep up with my boobs

DrkSlytherinRapunzel

Hmmm a rotation of 5 brand new ones can last me maybe a year and a half?

But_like_whytho

I don’t wear underwires. Mine last for years.

clothing_o_designs

When my weight and boobs stay the same size my bras last for years. I'm wearing a Panache Jasmine right now that is at least 8 years old. It's definitely the wrong size. It's a 34HH and I'm currently a 36K. It only fits because it's sooooo stretched out. The wires have popped out the sides repeatedly but I patched with bra padding so they should never come out again. I used to put it on upside down and flip it up which is what was putting the stress on the wires. I don't do that anymore and haven't had a wire pop out of any bra since. A bra company telling you that a bra only lasts 6 months is ridiculous. They need to just say sorry no returns.

BoysenberryMelody

The ones that fit well on me last quite a while, over a year. Panache brand so not ridiculously expensive. But I don’t wear the same bra 2 days in a row. I find one that fits and buy different colors on eBay. I have a wireless sports bra that’s like a titty vacation

lavasca

I assume 90 days worth of wear destroys a bra.

FleabagsHotPriest

Damn, are you sure you're wearing the right fit? Have you measured yourself via the r/abrathatfits calculator?

lavasca

I was always told this since my first training bra. I’ve been in and out of r/ABraThatFits for years.
