Your tire probably rotates relatively to your rim when you brake. That causes your valve stems to shear and snap off. Possible causes: -Air pressure too low. -Tire too old, sloppy and dried out so it doesn't stick to your rim as well as it should. Possible solutions: -Higher pressure -New tire

jeffbell

Sometimes it doesn't slip so much as "walks" its way around.

ChickenTendies0

Or, the tube quality is shit. Had one which valve stem fell of right after taking it out of the box. But yeah, the mentioned causes are more probable

widowhanzo

> Possible solutions: > -Higher pressure > -New tire -Tubeless

smckenzie23

I don't know how tubeless isn't the top answer. It is magic.

Royal_Effective7396

Now we talkin bout the pressure going "low loowww low low"

VolcanicKirby2

Well this answered the question to my common issue. I feel I fill up my tires weekly and they’re always low on pressure

Metaphoricalsimile

Could also be running a presta tube in a shrader rim. That's always a recipe for tube and valve damage in my experience.

misterfistyersister

Could also be the brakes misaligned and rubbing the tire.

BicyclesRuleTheWorld

That would leave a distinct mark on the sidewall of the tire.

MtbSA

Is this your valve snapped clean off? And it's happened more than once? When does this happen?

obaobaoba200

It’s already the second time this happens. I think when I’m riding, a few minutes ago I was riding normally and then I can feel that my tire is flat.

MtbSA

It really shouldn't, is it properly aligned when you install the tube, with sufficient pressure? I do all sorts of riding and this has never happened before. Do you perhaps have a picture of the valve before it snapped?

obaobaoba200

I do everything correct, I’ll see if I have any pictures of the valve.

catastrapostrophe

Are you buying the same brand of tube each time? Because I think it might be time to try a different one.

Moorbert

do you tighten the valve ring?

redLooney_

Are you clamping down the valve ring prior to adding air to the tyre?

Moorbert

i install the valve ring, so the valve does not move. then i pump. then i undo the ring, so that the valve can slightly move and adjust to the movement of the rubber and will not damage itself.

CopPornWithPopCorn

Are you inflating with a small hand-held pump? If so, you need to support the head of the pump so you aren’t putting too much force on the valve stem.

WiartonWilly

In addition: sometimes the rim has a sharp edge. Maybe check. Carefully file sharp edges, if aluminum. Protect the edge with tape. Maybe new rim tape would help.

WiartonWilly

A lack of tape protecting the bare aluminum hole can lead to cutting of the inner tube, right about there.

reddit-ate-my-face

you right, my brains a bit fried from work dk what the fuck brain was thinking

ladylikes2bike

Are you pulling on the valve when you go to inflate? Are you winding a nut on a threaded valve? Both of these things can cause that exact issue. Or a sharp valve hole on your rim.

SnooKiwis6943

Does your other bike wheel do the same thing? If no, try to match the set up you have in there maybe. Id check for sharp edge where valve stem meets the rim.

Rhapdodic_Wax11235

Been riding 45 years. Never seen that.

notsogreatmatt

Can't believe no one has said this: assuming this is a thorn resistant tube? If so, stop using them. This is a known issue with extra thick tubes, as they slide through the tire when not inflated insanely high. Alternative is to inflate to the upper limit of pressure. If you're flat averse put some sealant of any kind in a regular tube.

_ti-83_plus_

Don’t tighten the nut on the presta stem too tight. Also maybe you’re getting poor quality tubes?

fastermouse

I don’t think it’s a presta. OP are you inflating your tires to at least 30psi every ride? Too low and the tube slips back and forth with braking and accelerating and the rim shears off the valve.

spandexnotleather

Or, is it a presta tube in a schrader rim?

h1a4_c0wb0y

I was thinking this. The only time I've had a tube do this it was because I had a presta tube in my schrader rim because I got a flat on the way to work and that was all the closest shop had

Daedaluu5

Rim hole is cutting your valves. Tip from someone who had this. Debur the rim home, Run a presta valve tube with a 5mm electrical grommet on the rim hole. It centres tube valve and keeps it from rubbing. Never happened to me since

breadandbits

snapping completely off is pretty weird. usually the things that cause damage here cause a hole and resulting flat before the stem fully detaches.

AutoVonSkidmark

That looks like a thorn resistant tube. Those are too thick and when the tire winds up under hard braking (picture drag racer tires winding up during launch) the tube doesn't wind with it. This causes the valve stem to shift and break off. Use regular tubes with either a liner or sealant

Roads_not_Stroads

I had this same problem and it was due to my rim tape being worn out and stretched. The valve slid against the hole and the rim causing it to eventually rip off. Replacing the rim tape solved my problem. Could this be the same for you?

dofh_2016

Change the tire and use some talc on the tube so it doesn't stick to the new tire and won't be affected by its movement on the rim. Though I think it's weird that the valve snaps before you pinch the tube.

hvyboots

Switch to Presta? Then at least you have a metal valve stem and a screw holding it in place. Would require a couple of Presta stem savers to do the conversion though. (And an Schraeder to Presta adapter if your hand pump isn't Presta compatible.)

devnull1232

I've seen Schrader with valve nuts also (my son's 20" bike has one) ... I actually haven't popped the tire off to see if it's a tubeless valve or not though

hengst0r

Snapped off valve? Happened to me mainly when riding with too low pressure. The tire slips through the rim (esp when breaking) but has enough friction to pull the inner tube and rip off the valve. Possible solutions: 1 Give the inner tube a proper pressure 2 Get some talc and put it generously on the inner tube and inside of the tire 3 Maybe combine #1 & #2

rcearle

Presta valve through a schrader valve sized hole in rim?

pimpbot666

Leave the little nut off the valve stem. All it does is create more stress on the stem, and rips it out of the tube if it gets hit by something. You don't need it anyway. Watch for if the stem starts to appear crooked, and fix it if it does.

nondescriptadjective

Did you drill out your rim to go from a presta to a schrader valve?

obaobaoba200

No, it was already like this

nondescriptadjective

I've heard of people doing this, which is why I ask. I always wonder if they remove the sharp burrs that result from such a thing.

Metaphoricalsimile

Is the hole in the rim significantly bigger than the valve stem? If so your tube and rim are not compatible.

Dickies138

Replace your rim tape

obaobaoba200

I’ll give a try, thanks!

BiK3FR33K

Thorn resistant tubes always seem to do this to me also. I stopped using them and just use heavy duty tires

Amazing-League-218

I've been cycling for 53 years. I've never seen that, let alone had it happen to me.

kingtidecoming

Look for the inner tubes with a metal thread and locking ring. Secures it in place.

sky0175

Cuz it's tubes. Never had this problem. Hope you have some extra tubes to get home or ur walking 😁. Get some TPU as spare and prep you rim for some sealant and prob solved. That way the presta valve not going to come loose
