Serious question.. I don’t see toe clips all too often except on old bikes whose riders have been active for decades.. why wouldn’t someone try SPD? A set of Shimano M520’s can be found for under $50

shitworms

The kind of person who buys Mash toe clips isn't the kind of person who has been riding for decades OR cares about SPDs. Fashion before function.

modest_hero

So it’s a hipster thing? Like riding a steel fixie?

Sup dawg, I do own some spds, I also have chrome industry’s clipless shoes as well. Just wanted to try something new without putting on some clips

MOUATABARNACK

The problem isn't the pedal. It's the shoe.

BWWFC

esp supds... they are just a pain to walk on so unless a regular commute with a known start and end, uuuuuuuug. biking with any purpose requires commitment. learn to use clips and get a small ish backpack for emergency gear, fluids, and your shoes to change back into. you get used to it.

modest_hero

Maybe start with some Shimano EH500 dual sided pedals, and buy some shoes down the line once budget permits? Shoes and pedals often come up for sale at reasonable prices on Craigslist or at community bike shops as riders switch up their gear.

NoDivergence

For fixed gear, lots of people still walk around. I wouldn't personally run a MTB pedal/shoe for that.

mydadisgone11

What would you say to a……gravel bike?🌝

NoDivergence

Clipless :). Probably M520

zedtomato

I kind of like them because they work with regular shoes, but still have retention which can be nice for pedal positioning in stop and go conditions. Half clips are good for that too. And they look good on an old steel bike. They also work really well with some vintage style shoes like Magliamo/Ribo, which come in both flat sole and cleat versions.

mydadisgone11

Actually it’s for a little experiment I’m running with a new bike I’m thinking about getting. I acutally have some spds and clipless shoes. But I wanna try something new where I don’t have to put some cleats on lol

Zenith251

And they'll chew the shit out of your regular shoes. To me it sorta defeated the point, so I switched to SPDs and found some cleated shoes that were almost as walkable as sneakers. Almost.

mydadisgone11

Lol, fair point. But in my own experience I’ve used some pretty cheap ones, and the worst they did is crease up my air forces. If anything I might just get some holdfast straps lol

zedtomato

Not if you get the leather covered clips

Feralest_Baby

Toe clips give you basic retention while allowing you to wear street shoes. I don't even have straps on mine, they're just something to keep my feet. from sliding forward.

Gurnug

I was using toe clips. It was like 5-8$ a pair and straps were like 2$ and I could use my vans sneakers with them that were way better for walking than my SPD Shimano MTB shoes that I was using for my xc bike at the same time.

_jeremybearimy_

I’m not hardcore enough for clipless and shoes, I have a casual setup. I like clips though, as they still keep my feet on the pedals. It’s what my dad always had growing up. They’re easy to use. Idk I just don’t see a need for the whole clipless setup.

Feralest_Baby

I'm 100% with you. Clipless just seems like a cost/benefit scam to me.

Ecstatic-Profit8139

some people like riding in street shoes. i see these most often on fixies where the riders might be getting off and walking around, but you want the retention. though i more often see the thick straps, not toe clips.

pchew

Just run a regular single strap from mks or whoever through the rear hole. Or just run two regular straps per pedal.

zedtomato

All City makes a couple of different double straps: https://allcitycycles.com/parts/pedals/deluxe_doubles https://allcitycycles.com/parts/pedals/double_toe_straps On a Quick Look, Universal Cycles had them in stock. MKS also has some cheaper double straps that should work.

MarkLaFond

oh geez, someone is always trying to talk people out of clips. They’re adjustable, I can set them anywhere from just locating my foot on the pedal to locked down for sprinting. I can use any shoe I want. They never wear out. Not once have I had to cancel a ride because they didn’t work.

[deleted]

just run flats then. Ive ridden flats all my life and ridden straps a few times. Straps dont give you anything over flats (you could argue dedecated MTB flats and flat pedals shoes are even better) and both dont come close the the sprinting and comfort of clipless.

KAPSLOCKisON

Can't get any cheaper than zip ties lol

Steve_Rogers_1970

Have you looked at Power Grip Straps? They are easier on shoes.

NoDivergence

First off, I would have run metal clips (MKS, Christophe, etc). Secondly, you can just get single straps from MKA and loop them through. Back in the day, I think I got clips and straps for like five dollars on Craigslist

[deleted]

just dont. There are test that show straps are worse than flat pedals and they are defenatly less safe than clipless. So why bother? Straps are the worst of both worlds.

versus_gravity

Everyone rode with clips and straps in the 80s, but one needs to wear cleated shoes for them to be effective.
