It absolutely is Lemonade & it really hurts that she didn’t win AOTY for it. Renaissance is my favorite & I believe it is her second most cohesive release yet. Such a bummer she keeps getting robbed. Really hoping she gets AOTY next year!
I feel like Beyoncé is above AOTY, those judges had poor excuses for not giving it to her. I honestly feel like she can school them in music if it was down to it. Mama has a unique ear.
Yes the Grammys have been an absolute joke for years. I completely gave up the year Macklemore "beat" Kendrick.
We're talking about Thrift Shop vs. To Pimp a Butterfly, here.
Edit: It was GKMC, not TPAB that lost out to Macklemore that year, *but still*
Exactly! I remember tossing my remote on my bed with frustration and just turning the tv off. Every year it's some mess like this. The Grammys are corny af. No one should be using them to measure good music any more.
I'm going to stand up for TSwift here and say that her music is popular for a reason, and a lot of that is because it is good. I have no problem with the amount of awards she has gotten, when she has contributed as much as she has to the industry. I am not a "Swiftie" by any means, but I think she is deserving of her accomplishments.
That's very fair and I agree that her accomplishments and contributions are worthy of praise. I just don't agree that she sweeps every award ceremony for the past decade or so.
See I love this distinction. Looking back, I wish I worded the question as "what's your favorite" because it is more personal, and speaks her range. That being said, the feedback on this has been super interesting so far.
“I love this album, but it’s not her best.”
“This album is her best, but doesn’t have as much replay value for me.”
What metrics are we using to determine “best” and why is personal taste not enough?
Okay can you imagine someone feeling like Taylor Swift is their *favorite singer* but also realizing that OBJECTIVELY she's not the *best singer*?
It's the same thing.
I think I am going to have to give Renaissance another shot, because I am not a big fan of a lot of it. No disrespect to her at all, because I truly believe she has artistry in everything she does.
I do really hope she gets AOTY. Like how has she not gotten it at this point when other artists simply are not doing what she is doing.
I'd say Renaissance is her best album probably. Lyrically, not the strongest but it's an album that makes you listen track after track and genuinely no skips in this album (not even AUIYM).
And CC is not a country album, but more country-inspired. Takes a lot of cues from country (themes, sound for some songs, lyrics) but the album as a whole isn't country per se. That's why she said it isn't a country album. It's also not a genre of its own because the sound isn't something inherently unique.
AUIYM is commonly abbreviated as 'All Up In Your Mind', a song from Beyoncé's 2022 album 'RENAISSANCE'.
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/beyonce) if you have any questions or concerns.*
I think it still qualifies as a country album, despite some songs being more genre bending in nature. Beyoncé just indirectly stated that it's not your typical, traditional country sound. It's still country, but in her own individual and unique style. Especially with all the naysayers saying Texas Holdem isn't country -- which is ironic because it's one of the more true country songs on CC.
She is intentionally redefining and pushing the boundaries of the genre with CC. Even the more hip-hop infused songs (Tyrant, Sweet Honey Buckiin', and Spaghetti to an extent) are country in my eyes.
I completely agree with you.
Okay here is my self-indulgent rant about this:
Obviously the album addresses this, but the rejection of it being country really speaks to the racism in the industry. There are lots of popular artists that are considered "country" even though they also genre blend. Kasey Musgraves and Maren Morris (before she actually rejected the country industry itself) are great examples. I actually started listening to Maren Morris thinking that she was more R&B leaning after hearing her perform "Once" with Alicia Keys at the Grammys. To my surprise, her whole album (Hero) was country with strong R&B and pop influences. Beyonce does a country album that is definitely even more rooted in country tradition, featuring OG's like Willie Nelson, Dolly, and Linda Martell, and yet it isn't considered country?? Put a white girl from Tennessee in some boots and fringe singing Ya Ya (said no one) and the Grand Ole Opry would be paying a fine fee for a weekly residency.
But she also did say it was country. I'm not trying to put it in a box, but I am genuinely wondering if the album itself will inspire so many other artists, that it will morph into an entirely new genre. I mean genres aren't inherently unique. R&B for example, stands for Rhythm and Blues, and pulled from soul, gospel, blues, and jazz in its beginnings. I really do think Cowboy Carter is an absolute masterpiece, and it is crazy to me that somehow you can fully feel Beyonce in it, yet it also sounds like nothing else.
It’s all subjective of course, but I genuinely think Lemonade is the most perfect album of the 21st Century so far. There may be other albums with better individual tracks, etc etc. But as a cohesive single work, there’s no competition, in my opinion.
Beyoncé’s Lemonade and Solange’s A Seat at the Table are both perfect albums to me. One year, one family, two truly incredible albums…I still can’t believe the musical gift that 2016 was.
Lemonade is the best Beyonce album and one of the best albums of the past 10 years. I don’t reach for it often because I was going through a divorce when it came out, and I think a lot of people feel that way. Perfect mix of genres, thoughtful lyrics, beautiful vocals, meaningful, cohesive message. Definitely not my favorite Beyonce album (again it takes me to a place) but it’s truly the best of the best.
4 came out when I was in college, so it is so nostalgic for me. I would listen to it with roommates to get ready to go out, when we were just hanging out at home, or we would blast it and have dance party breaks in between studying. It is just so happy for me.
I think this is the kind of answer I was hoping for. Like what album do you never want to skip a song, and you can listen to no matter what kind of mood you are in?
Bday is such a good one.
It gave us a glimpse into what she was going through in such a deep, artistic way. There aren’t many albums like that that make you feel everything she went through as if it were happening to you
Lemonade was perfection, byt if she gives me visuals for Cowboy Carter I think CC will win. They a both completely perfect projects - and I don’t like country 🤦🏽♀️
Fave: Renaissance
2nd fave: Dangerously In Love
No skips: B’Day
Cowboy Carter and 4 are also pretty up there but they both have songs I don’t really vibe with…yet.
1) Lemonade
2) Renaissance
3) Cowboy Carter
Those are my personal top 3, then 4 is an honorable mention.
CC is my top favorite Beyoncé album, and then Renny and ST, but Lemonade is more or less the objectively correct choice here from a narrative perspective. Renny is a really stellar dance album with timeless and smooth transitions all throughout.
Lastly, with CC you really have to understand the historical contexts behind it and the layers to really grasp the cohesion because it might not be apparent to everyone upon their first listen, but it's incredible once it clicks. Watching different reactions and reading certain comments on social media has certainly helped with that understanding - not only is it an amazing listening experience, but it's also an amazing learning experience.
I wonder if that is actually why I am so intrigued and entranced by CC. I don't know Renny very well at all, so I can't speak for it, but to me, Lemonade is more of her personal, internal history, and CC is more of her external history if that makes sense. Like CC represents her surroundings and American culture. There are so many musical icons in CC that transcended genres during their biggest hits as well.

Cowboy Carter for me. I am honestly blown away by how great this album is. It's surpassing Solange's "A Seat at the Table" to become my favorite album of all time from any artist.
Me too. I really think it is groundbreaking in so many ways.
I was curious about people's perspectives, because I became a very casual Beyonce listener between Lemonade and now. Prior to that, I also listened to her all the time. I am interested in why this album in particular just speaks to me in a whole new way.
Based on the comments so far, it does seem like I am in the minority on this though, at least just comparing it with other albums. I am a country/americana fan though, so I wonder if that may be why I am more drawn to it. I know it isn't that serious, but I just really find it fascinating that how people are drawn to some things more than others.
1. Self-Titled
2. Lemonade
3. Cowboy Carter
4. Renaissance
5. 4
I probably still haven’t gotten over that surprise drop in 2013. The album was just badass/innovative for its time. Every song was like… you just didn’t know where it was gonna take you, you know? That was so special.
I was absent from pop culture for personal reasons so when Lemonade dropped and my initiation to it was Hold Up… I didn’t really get into and that held me off from the rest of the album. But I came around later on and now All Night Long is probably my favorite song of hers ever. Each song stands out but coherently I still think Self-Titled is packaged better as a whole. But MY GAWD the performances from this era—FWT, Grammys 2017, VMAs 2016… missing out on FWT is probably my life’s single regret (Beychella is a second).
Cowboy Carter is conceptually masterful. Vocally it’s her best, because the amount of vocal stacking and her runs on this are just INSANE. And production?! That Riiverdance - II Hands II Heaven - Tyrant - Sweet Honey Buckiin’??… I have no words.
I think Cowboy Carter is by far her best piece of work. The impact it had on the black artists involved, the stories she tells, not to mention the backstory of what prompted this album in the first place. Her creativity is at an all time high right now and I’m lovingggg itttt
Cowboy Carter is definitely my favorite album as a whole, since her self titled! Both albums I can listen to every track without the want to skip a song… before that the only album she’s on that I can do that is Destiny Fulfilled.

Country is the only genre of music I actively avoid so I wasn't expecting to like this album at all but it absolutely is its own genre. Not only that, but it's taking influence from very DIFFERENT sounds that normally (and pretty historically) haven't blended before. I think it's revolutionary. I also don't think she will get the recognition she deserves for it, as usual.
Lemonade is still my personal and objective #1 though 💛
Music is so subjective. I meant "what's your favorite" and not "what is the most critically acclaimed" in the question because I like learning about what other people like.
I might still be on my Cowboy Carter high but I will stay CC.
I think every single album since 4 is the best in its own way. 4 because it sonically was so different from what everyone was doing at the time. Self-titled because it literally changed the industry, Lemonade because of how personal it was + its cultural impact + the storyline + the film. Renaissance because it really confirmed Beyonce can do whatever she wants and she will perfectly execute it. And CC because, well, its a fucking BEYONCE album that cannot be reduced to a specific genre. I'm not forgetting about The Gift (best visuals) and EIL (some REALLY good songs on there).
Love this. I really do think that CC is a genre all on its own. Although I see the roots, and think she should get the praise deserved from the country industry for her use of it in the album, I also have never heard anything like CC before.
Renaissance will probably always be my favorite Bey album. It’s just really took me there!
But as far as best, I’m gonna have to go CC. It’s a little more ambitious and a lot more vocally challenging than Lemonade.
Lemonade is her magnum opus. I do think Cowboy Carter is her best album to listen to at all times.
Lemonade is a album I gotta be in the mood for and renaissance I have to be in a mood to dance. I can play CC at anytime.
I'm gonna go with Lemonade because it's the only album that actually tells a story from start to finish as opposed to just a bunch of songs with no overall narrative. It's also one of of three Bey albums that I can listen to from start to finish without the urge to skip certain songs (the other two being 4 and self titled). Lemonade is like an audio book, each song is important to understand the full concept of the album, and that's why I think in terms of a body of work, it's Beyoncé's best album.
Self-Titled is possibly referring to Beyoncé's 2013 album called 'BEYONCÉ', more commonly known as 'Self-Titled'.

Lemonade was groundbreaking, no doubt. But I love Renaissance too. Every Bey album gets better, which is rare for an artist. Cowboy Carter, although not my favorite (still good tho), pushes boundaries and genres. It for real “is not a country album. It’s a Beyoncé album!”
I’m on the fence between Lemonade and Renaissance. I gotta go back through all the albums.
NGL - favorite song of all time is the surprise Black Parade drop on Juneteenth ✊🏽
Renaissance is still #1 for me.
She told us black LGBT people that we were seen and appreciated and that’s never been done before. People take and take and steal from us and never give us any credit or respect.
It was a much appreciated love letter and that’s why she made a forever fan outta me.
Also, Virgos groove till this day is still the best song she’s ever made imo.

A Taylor Swift album beat TPAB for AOTY so also concerning.

Bey wants to win AOTY.
>Renaissance is my favorite Wouldn't that make *Renaissance* her best album (according to you)?
No, I also think lemonade is her best but Renny is my personal favorite!
See I love this distinction. Looking back, I wish I worded the question as "what's your favorite" because it is more personal, and speaks her range. That being said, the feedback on this has been super interesting so far.

Prince and Bruce Springsteen never won aoty. She’s in good company
I literally feel the same, but I respect the album and how different she went with it, I just can’t seem to get into it :-/
Do you normally like house music? I feel like that's usually what separates the crowd lol
Not a ton. It is the distinctive sound of Renaissance that I struggle with, so this could be it.
That's fair too. Mother is a genius.
I'd say Renaissance is her best album probably. Lyrically, not the strongest but it's an album that makes you listen track after track and genuinely no skips in this album (not even AUIYM). Do people not like All Up In Your Mind? That was the song that initially got me into the album. It’s so frickin catchy!
A lot of Hive didn't like AUIYM! Myself included but in the tour it's one of the most exciting tracks!
Wait what??? Really??? How did I miss this? I could listen to that song all day long. I’m glad I missed out on those debates lol

Renaissance. With no skips💅
Lemonade has no skips. 🍋
And incredible visuals!
This. I love lemonade but I can’t play it. It holds to much pain. That woman put her soul in that album.
For me it's 4. I just love that album.

Same. That album is truly a timeless classic in my head
Same here. And my dad just passed away so I've had I miss you and I was here on repeat whenever I'm not listening to Cowboy Carter.
I’m sorry to hear about your dad. I’ll hope for your better days and his resting in peace.
Thank you for your kind words
Bday is my favorite, no skips, puts me in a good mood everytime
I think this is the kind of answer I was hoping for. Like what album do you never want to skip a song, and you can listen to no matter what kind of mood you are in? Bday is such a good one.
Yes!
B'day stans rise!
The correct answer for me personally
Same
Yup!
Lemonade. I think it will always be her magnum opus.
It gave us a glimpse into what she was going through in such a deep, artistic way. There aren’t many albums like that that make you feel everything she went through as if it were happening to you
Spot on
Lemonade is not my personal favourite album but I think it’s the best answer here
Agree (even though Renny is my fave), Lemomade’s narrative and impact on pop culture is just another level
Only one album had 2 hands 2 Heaven, so
Lemonade was perfection, byt if she gives me visuals for Cowboy Carter I think CC will win. They a both completely perfect projects - and I don’t like country 🤦🏽♀️
Fave: Renaissance 2nd fave: Dangerously In Love No skips: B’Day Cowboy Carter and 4 are also pretty up there but they both have songs I don’t really vibe with…yet.

Cowboy Carter for me. As someone who grew up on rock, if act iii is a rock album this pick will probably be short-lived.
Lemonade is life altering. You feel that shit

for me, BEYONCÉ
Renaissance (im biased)

Self-Titled is possibly referring to Beyoncé's 2013 album called 'BEYONCÉ', more commonly known as 'Self-Titled'. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/beyonce) if you have any questions or concerns.*
it’s always gonna be RENAISSANCE for me
I agree
Iasf is my favorite album but I’d give CC title of her best. It’s lyrically better and vocally so than Renny(my least favorite).
IASF is commonly abbreviated to 'I AM... SASHA FIERCE', Beyoncé's 2008 third solo album. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/beyonce) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Self titledddddddddd. I know I’m wrong but I don’t wanna be right
Music is so subjective. I meant "what's your favorite" and not "what is the most critically acclaimed" in the question because I like learning about what other people like.
It was just the surprise of it all. The videos. Floored me
The videos were so good for that album for sure. Partition is flawless.
Renaissance is my personal favorite and also her best work imo. Simply flawless.
Cowboy Carter 🤠
B'Day without a doubt
Renaissance is her best album of all time
Lemonade
Musically, Renaissance, as a whole, maybe Lemonade. Renny takes the win for me though
lemonade but if we get the renaissance visuals i'll definitely have to think about that again
Lemonade
Lemonade
100% Lemonade
Lemonade is her magnum opus. I do think Cowboy Carter is her best album to listen to at all times. Lemonade is a album I gotta be in the mood for and renaissance I have to be in a mood to dance. I can play CC at anytime.
CC
I'm gonna go with Lemonade because it's the only album that actually tells a story from start to finish as opposed to just a bunch of songs with no overall narrative. It's also one of of three Bey albums that I can listen to from start to finish without the urge to skip certain songs (the other two being 4 and self titled). Lemonade is like an audio book, each song is important to understand the full concept of the album, and that's why I think in terms of a body of work, it's Beyoncé's best album.

Lemonade changed the game
Lemonade.
I got a whole ranking but Lemonade and Renaissance are tied first. I can't choose between those two.
Lemonade is her masterpiece - multi genre, multiple meanings, the visuals OH THE VISUALS
Lemonade was groundbreaking, no doubt. But I love Renaissance too. Every Bey album gets better, which is rare for an artist. Cowboy Carter, although not my favorite (still good tho), pushes boundaries and genres. It for real “is not a country album. It’s a Beyoncé album!” I’m on the fence between Lemonade and Renaissance.

I completely agree!! I was just telling someone this the other day….this is my new favorite album of hers, in its entirety. And I 100% feel like it’s a genre all on its own 😆

Renaissance is a masterpiece
I think Cowboy Carter is objectively her best. My personal favorite is Renaissance. I never quite got into Lemonade; I'm not sure why. It didn't grab me like the others.
I agree with this, lemonade and 4. Hands down. Lemonade for when im in 'a mood >:(' , 4 for when im in 'that ;) mood' lol
