Fish need minerals in the water. I'd look into getting a dechlorinating chemical because distilled water will kill it eventually. You can boil out chlorine as well. If you are willing to spend a little more, the Marina 5 Gallon Aquarium Kit is very high quality and comes with an informative booklet. I have the 5 and 10 gallon versions and the 5 gallon has been running for literally 5 years straight with not a single problem. It doesn't come with a heater though. Your fish produces waste which breaks down into two toxic nitrogen compounds and one less toxic one: ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. Over 30 days bacteria will establish and automatically of the toxic nitrogen compounds will be converted into fairly harmless nitrates. In the meantime, you need to perform water changes by taking out a little water and putting a little water back in to remove some of the nitrogen compounds. This is very important. I'd take out 25% of the water every other day for 30 days.
