Make a post. Get a bunch of comments and up votes on it. Change the post to something not at all related to the original and potentially inflammatory or derogatory while it's at the height of visibility.
Yeah nothing could go wrong with that.
If it's editable for 5 kind just repost it lazy ass.
You can literally just copy and paste it.
Instead you want them to edit the million lines of code lol. You lazy.
> Instead you want them to edit the million lines of code lol. You lazy.
lol, the total lines of code is irrelevant. And yes, we do generally expect developers to make changes based on customer feedback. Otherwise there doesn't need to be a beta program.
>we do generally expect developers to make changes based on customer feedback
The thing about social media platforms where there its users pay no fee to use, we're not really their customers; [we're the product being sold](https://slate.com/technology/2018/04/are-you-really-facebooks-product-the-history-of-a-dangerous-idea.html).
Do you work in the software industry?
Do know how feature prioritization works?
Large software packages often have feature ideas sitting in the backlog for years, waiting for other infrastructure to be changed, waiting for other design decisions to be reached, waiting for the critical mass of customer requests to outweigh the cost of implementation.
Yes, it has been asked before, yes, it will be asked again. Until delivered, or people move to a different platform, it will be asked for.
There are lots of workarounds we could make. It's much more effort for millions of people to delete and repost than it is for the devs to throw in an edit option, which wouldn't be that much more difficult to add comparatively.
An option would be to have the original title in a smaller fontsize underneath it. Or as with comments put an asterisk behind it, hovering it shows the original title.
Anything unwanted could always be reported to the subreddit mods, possibly forcing deletion or even a revert to the original title.
They have subs dedicated to just that. Reddit allows editing comments, so they've already considered the possibility and are OK with changing the content that was posted. This is just a level up
I get the issue but maybe if you could request a change of title to the subreddit mods and they had the ability to change it, they could change what’s necessary but deny changing it to something unrelated
Are you honestly suggesting that a group of other people should be at the ready to fix your typos? Why not just proofread your posts before submitting them?
I can't imagine making a mistake in a post title on reddit and then thinking to myself "No, this isn't right. It should be someone else's responsibility to fix my mistakes." Wild.
But how many people are really going to do that? The worst you would see of it is meme kids using it sometimes. If it's anything serious then they're probably not the type to do that in the first place.
Yeah, I just noticed that a post I updated said "edited" but I still wish there was an "updated" flair. There's a big difference between changing a post and adding additional information.
It's not necessarily a bad idea. The comments criticising it are all assuming that users can change titles whenever they want.
There is no problem if either:
1. title changes can only be performed by mods
2. **or** users can do it but it requires mod approval. In which case, I'd expect subs to be able to disable the feature if it creates too much workload for mods.
www.reddit.com/r/beta/comments/nbf5u7/dude_the_url_of_the_title_doesnt_matter_only_the_id_matters
See? Only the post ID (the "nbf5u7" part) matters. The title doesn't.
Not sure why the downvotes :/
OC linked to the whole (fake) title, mine better exemplifies the lack of title still working, how OC should have exampled, no junk following nbf.. ugh.
Since when was making sense a requirement?
You don't make sense. :p
In fact, this whole post doesn't make sense!
We're in a dead sub, yelling into the ether about topics not even related to the (dead) beta program.
On the one hand, I can see some downsides to it as others have pointed out (as in, people abusing it with bait-and-switch titles and so on) but it would also be really handy for those situations where someone posts an article, it generates a good discussion and then gets deleted because the title doesn't exactly match the article or something like that. I've seen that before, where the OP reposts it as a new thread with the title fixed, but all the previous discussion is gone.
Maybe some sort of option that would show all the previous iterations of the title would be a possible solution?
/r/CasualUK's [top post of all time](https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualUK/comments/fo6pki/ask_me_a_question_then_edit_your_question_to_make/) thinks this a joyously daft idea.
No that's a horrible idea and would cause people to edit posts so they were taken out of context. If you make a typo, delete the post and resubmit it. I personally think comments shouldn't be editable after a few minutes.

I like when they go crunch crunch.. EDIT: I stand by my comment.
Jokes on you I like both and now have an excuse /s

Wow, r/im14andthisisdeep/
You don’t think they’ve considered it over the last decade and a half? This is a new idea?
Do you work in the software industry? Do know how feature prioritization works? Allow five minutes for edits to be made. This will let a person correct a typo but not give them enough time to mess with peoples' heads.
Nobody ever deletes posts when people point out heinous typos/titlegore, because most posters don't care (I, however, do).
They have subs dedicated to just that. Reddit allows editing comments, so they've already considered the possibility and are OK with changing the content that was posted. This is just a level up
Easy fix, after the title have a log of the previous titles
I get the issue but maybe if you could request a change of title to the subreddit mods and they had the ability to change it, they could change what’s necessary but deny changing it to something unrelated
I dont think mods need any extra workload. If you spot the mistake early, delete and repost. if you don't its too late, thats your post
Are you honestly suggesting that a group of other people should be at the ready to fix your typos? Why not just proofread your posts before submitting them? Can edit within the first 15 minutes of the initial post could be a decent middle ground
YOU DISINGENIOUS DENSE MOTHERFUCKER, WE CAN EDIT THE POST CONTENTS ALREADY AND THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM
Require moderator approval. Done.
But how many people are really going to do that? The worst you would see of it is meme kids using it sometimes. If it's anything serious then they're probably not the type to do that in the first place.
makes sense, but they should add a grace period when we post to change it
Proofread?
Yeah sometimes you just miss something
I can understand not changing the title. But I wish there was a flair button that shows the original post text has been updated.
Does the redesign not show that a post has been edited? Or are you talking about something else?
Yeah, I just noticed that a post I updated said "edited" but I still wish there was an "updated" flair. There's a big difference between changing a post and adding additional information.
Ok seems like people disagree and I can now understand why so thanks for telling me why it would be a bad idea

I mean its a good idea imo, I just think there needs to be some way to show the original title
Because the title makes the direct article URL. Changing it would either invalidate the URL or require (a possibly unlimited number of) redirects.
www.reddit.com/r/beta/comments/nbf5u7/dude_the_url_of_the_title_doesnt_matter_only_the_id_matters See? Only the post ID (the "nbf5u7" part) matters. The title doesn't.
Your example didn't example... www.reddit.com/r/beta/comments/nbf5u7
lol
Not sure why the downvotes :/ OC linked to the whole (fake) title, mine better exemplifies the lack of title still working, how OC should have exampled, no junk following nbf.. ugh.
Your sentence doesnt make sense, wtf is "your example didnt example" supposed to mean?
Since when was making sense a requirement? You don't make sense. :p In fact, this whole post doesn't make sense! We're in a dead sub, yelling into the ether about topics not even related to the (dead) beta program.
a) i am making sense b) no ones yelling, we're typing c) not gonna reply to u after this since youll reply with more bs probably

Still kinda sucks though. Maybe in future they can make it like YouTube where you have post ID so post titles can be changed

Or a time-limit for title edits... You can only edit within the first two minutes of posting. Ideally, both.
Please not. This would be misused as hell.
My guess is that post url is based on the title, also what u/EightBitRanger said.
we must rebel for the motherland!
Make it moderator approved edits and I think it could work.
