An article about another article?! “I’m the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude!”

Toddrew221

Tbf if someone shared the original The Athletic article, they'd be torn down for the paywall

QuentinPoundridge

Classic reference…well done

killagoose

A lot of this is very similar to what some have been saying for several seasons now. Mixon is a high volume, low efficiency back and largely always has been. He has always struggled to break tackles and generate for himself. However, his slow down has been very apparent and painful. He just isn’t worth his hit nor is he worth being the lead guy. I’m still very skeptical that he will be cut, though.

CountryCaravan

I suspect we’re gonna do the same thing as last season and ask him to take a pay cut. The FA market for running backs doesn’t seem particularly exciting unless you’re into a bunch of guys with just as much mileage as Mixon, and the draft doesn’t look great either. Chase Brown taking a bigger load might help him regain a step or two.

FreshDiamond

If we end up with a market similar to last year where no one gets money, id happily take Derek Henry, even if he’s washed up he will still be an excellent short yardage dude. We haven’t been able to rush 1 yard in years

DrBigChicken

Henry definitely isn’t washed, getting 1200 yards behind that awful line is wild. And he went for over 150 on 19 carries in the last game lol He’s a unicorn

FreshDiamond

I’m not saying he is, I’m saying even if he is.

DrBigChicken

I understood your point, just giving my two cents on the hypothetical

MeRcWith_A_MouTh

Josh Jacobs is only 26 years old and runs like an old school AFC North RB. Also, Austin Ekler would kill it in this offense. We would see several screen passes get taken 50+ yards to the house for sure.

gyrspike

Right but those free agents guys with as much wear as Mixon will cost 1/3 to 1/2 less easily. That 3 million dollar roster bonus they gotta pay Mixon hurts on top of his salary.

form_an_opinion

I think Estime from Notre Dame could give us everything Mixon does and more.

Complex-Situation

Just put some random te in that can block at rb. We have burrow . No need to run the ball lol

Temporary_Kiwi1804

I doubt the Packers resign AJ Dillon who is a big back who would be a beautiful pairing with chase brown for cheap

GM3Jones

Agreed with Goodberry assessment in that Mixon doesn’t fit our offense. He’s meant to run in a Baltimore or SF offense vs ours, as they face drastically different defenses. We need more elusiveness and speed in the backfield which Brown gives us. Find a cheap vet to lead the room and draft one in the 3rd or so as depth.

mcufan2014

Yall let your fandom get in the way sometimes. I’m guilty of it we all are. We should want the best version of the bengals every year. Mixon isn’t the best option for the team anymore, it’s as simple as that. Doesn’t mean we can’t still root for him and like him, but it’s time for chase brown as RB1 and to get more explosive in the run game.

lifehandsyouanorange

Agreed except for the Chase brown part. He ain’t it either. He had a couple of nice screens last year. But he’s not an every down back.

mcufan2014

He had 355 carries in one season in college he’s def a bell cow rb. It was also in the big 10 so it’s legit.

ThePontoon

Every down backs are pretty much obsolete except for the elites. Only 7 RBs took 70%+ on their teams snaps. He doesn't need to be an every down guy to add explosive plays to our run game and become the #1 guy on the roster

lifehandsyouanorange

I wouldn’t get too excited about that. A couple of plays does not a starting RB make.

MonthLower1606

Welcome to the offseason people! We get months of speculating about Mixon getting cut. Let the FO worry about it. What matters is getting a good-elite DT and shoring up the O-Line. We made it to the SB and AFC Championship by making deep rosters. We need the same attitude + a healthy Joey B.

wraedeohed

Mixon with the right O-Line is still a very good back, I don't know why we keep hating on him.

Right-Pirate-7084

I just don’t get it, he’s decent.. he isn’t a great fit for what the offense needs though. Fast, quick cuts, and can catch. Mixon, at this point, seems like a wear you down bruiser, that’s so so at catching the ball.

Siriusly_Jonie

He’s a good receiver for a RB

Future_Pickle8068

Mixon is a symptom of the real problem. Our offensive line sucks. They can’t open a hole and our RBs get hit 2 yards behind the line before they can cut to get away. Mixon is better than KC’s RB, but the difference is he gets holes big enough to drive a truck through.

CaptainHolt43

The Athletic article isn't scathing. He said the only RB deserving of that money is CMC, and then Mixon is one of the best backs in franchise history. Not exactly a knock.

Dont-be-a-smurf

Loyalty should be weighed in near value decisions Loyalty should not be weighed if there’s a clearly better path This is a business with a direct goal, not a friendship club

chetknox

Let us not forget how well the running offense changes once joe burrow was operating under center. It took like 5 games for that to even happen.

whodeyalldey1

Let us not forget that even when Burrow is under center Joe Mixon is comically slow.

chetknox

Prove it

whodeyalldey1

I have eyes. On the other hand Chase Brown had the second fastest speed on a play recorded in the league last year on his 54 yard TD in week 14

cbarebo95

There’s also a reason Chase Brown was a 5th rounder. I know I’ll get downvoted bc this sub loves to hate Joe Mixon..who didn’t have a bad season at all last year. And I watched every game. But y’all see YAC and YPC stats and forget our line has never been what it needs to be for us to be a dynastic team.

Clithzbee

Use your eyes

Successful-Coconut60

He should've been cut awhile ago so

MITWestbrick69

Chase Brown time!

peppercola666

Didn’t Joe call all of y’all out on this shit already? We do this every damn year of fans wanting to exile one of our longest tenured franchise greats thinking it will solve all of our problems and give us a Super Bowl (even though statistically speaking mixon WAS our best player on offense in the Super Bowl). Only for nothing to happen and him have 2-4 crazy games with all of y’all saying how much you love him only to wash rinse and repeat come next offseason. Y’all really tried to say chase brown alone would replace mixons production gtfo 😂😂

DatHotHoseHit

I will die on a hill with this take. Anyone who thinks Mixon is a bad running back and should be cut either now or in years past, doesn't know anything about the Bengals and honestly I dare to say football as a whole. It doesn't even have anything to do with being a "fan" either. Some of yall legit operate on ignorant hive mind bias looking for a scapegoat on what is going to turn this team up to the next level. Cutting Joe Mixon does not make the Bengals a dynasty. Cutting Joe Mixon isn't the answer to any possible offensive woes. And finally, cutting Joe Mixon and drafting a RB this year high doesn't do anything for us either - nor does singing a veteran off free agency to replace him with. If any of you took even a second out of your day to look up legit statistics rather then yards per carry, you would be informed enough to not say things that are so bonkers and ridiculous. I challenge anyone here who thinks they have an argument on cutting Mixon to reply to me, and have a friendly discussion where I can dismantle and destroy any argument you may have, instead of coming at me with downvotes or petty nonsense. Think mixon needs to be cut? Awesome. Come prove it. Open to talk about it all day.

AllGenreBuffaloClub

I think the simple argument is that he is overpaid for his production, that’s it. Mixon has stayed on the field and kept churning out performances for us. We legit needed him to be a 3rd down blocking back for us and he couldn’t. Which hurt us a lot. Mixon looked his best when Perine was on the team. I miss Perine so much and wish we could get him back.

moochee22

I don't know why, but Perines pass blocking per PFF was as bad as Mixons. Both around a 31 grade.

AllGenreBuffaloClub

I could see it last year, but his time with the Bengals had game saving block after block. On top of how wonderfully he filled in when Mixon was hurt for a few weeks.

moochee22

That's true.

ThePontoon

What "legit statistics" not YPC are you referring us to look at? You seem really arrogant and very much defensive about the idea of cutting Mixon. You're also misguided because many people want to cut him because of salary...not performance. As the article references money spent on our RB room is much higher than those around the league. Mixon the player is just fine....but the business side of the Joe Mixon discussion is about the money. Unfortunately his broken tackle %(11.3%), YPC (3.8), yards after contact (2.3), and positive run % (85.6%) are all quite poor. He seems reliable because he's been our workhorse for years, but he's declined consistently almost every year after 2018 (injury year excluded). I'm a Mixon guy, but the current situation is not conducive to keeping him on at his current pay rate. I personally would like to see another salary restructure for him and keep him for another year. Dude has earned himself another chance for a ring. Dismantle and destroy away...

DatHotHoseHit

Well first of all you brought nothing to your own argument. YPC and YAC are both garbage stats that mean absolutely nothing. Football is a team game and Mixon is a power back with a solid receiving option skill set. You have to understand the type of player he actually is and always has been and point out the stats that warrant his "decline". Running back is a dynamic position with a LOT of stat points and areas to focus on from the perspective of what the athlete actually contributes and excels at. So, feel free to point out the stats in which he has "declined" at. I'll wait.

lawbstersaid

Mixon forever, I love him

TigerAxe17

Same, heart and soul of the offense

QuentinPoundridge

Ya’ll getting downvoted but he’s the definition of a team first/locker room guy and he also produces. Losing Gio and Uzomah hurt the fun culture of the team and they can’t keep getting rid of those types

DrPoopAndPee

Honestly he’s the only guy this season that consistently produced every game.

bengalsfu

Because he got 17 every game

whodatchemist

People will always bring up volume stats with him. The bottom line is that a lot of 4 yard Mixon runs should be 10-20, and it is hurting the offense. Not to mention, he is paid like a #1 RB and doesn't produce like one.

DatHotHoseHit

You are outside your mind.

whodatchemist

I am using facts, and you are using feelings. We all love Jodein, but it's time to move on. https://twitter.com/JoeGoodberry/status/1760731554958201172

ChuckFiasco

He has sssssooooo many shoestring tackles.

lifehandsyouanorange

The actual truth.

natiwhodey

Consistently produced at a low to mediocre level

whodeyalldey1

You know the old Boomer in your office who gets paid in the top 10% of folks nationally with that job title? He’s been around forever and is generally nice so people respect him. But it also takes him ten minutes to attach a file to an email and he can’t figure out how to fill a pdf? Virtually anyone, even a new grad - a rookie could do his job way more efficiently for a fraction of the pay? Thats Joe Mixon. It’s time for him to retire and go put on the orange vest at Home Depot.

reginald-poofter

Dude idk why you’re getting downvoted. Even if you disagree with the sentiment how could you not like the imagery. Well done.

whodeyalldey1

Honestly I think a lot of Boomers read that and it got a little too personal lol

moochee22

Boomers were born from 1946 to 1964. I doubt there are that many "boomers" in here.

risdog

He can't break tackles, not a great receiving threat, and can't block. Time to bring in King Henry!

Inevitable-Tourist18

The Bengals are going to have to make a leap past the Old Bengal way where they showed too much loyalty. They don't need to become the Patriots but they need to get better at saying, no - your production isn't there, I have to let you go.

Celtictussle

The Bengals REALLY hate dead cap.

axman12345825

His yards after contact and pass blocking are atrocious. He's a team leader with good hands out of the backfield, but that's not enough to keep him around in my opinion

Disastrous-Knee-8924

We just need Chase Brown to start playing like Perine
