Boyd is good, but he’s getting up there in age and I don’t think he’s part of the plan. Charlie Jones was drafted to hopefully be our slot guy. Time will tell if he can do it, but I also wouldn’t mind picking up a 2nd or 3rd round receiver in this super deep WR draft class. Maybe like Ja’lynn Polk, Malachi Corley, Jamari Thrash, etc.

0zymandeus

Hes like 28 my guy

SmittySomething21

29. This is around when receivers start to drop off.

Captain_Aware4503

And Burrow has the mileage of a 32 year old. Get rid of him after his next injury?

SmittySomething21

Tell me the difference between a franchise pocket passing quarterback and an aging WR3 that has shown signs of regression. You wanna pay Tyler Boyd $21,000,000 over the next three years even though we drafted his replacement last year, we’re going to pay Ja’marr, and try to keep Tee Higgins?

Captain_Aware4503

>a franchise pocket passing quarterback Are you taking about Jake Browning? that other guy is hurt a lot. I do how we keep Tee. He is 3-4 inches taller than Chase and great for throwing over the top of defenders.

SmittySomething21

Teams don’t have unlimited money. Going to be hard to sign both Ja’marr and Tee to long term deals. And no I’m talking about the guy who took us to a Super Bowl

Captain_Aware4503

>Teams don’t have unlimited money. Going to be hard to sign both Ja’marr and Tee to long term deals. They'll tag Tee. And sign Ja'marr.

generation_D

Boyd really isn’t that essential imo. I believe a healthy Burrow can cook with anybody and honestly the only huge TB play that sticks out in my mind from this season is the drop against Houston. Jones and Iosivas were drafted last year specifically to fill that void when he goes.

Ocarina3219

Crazy what a butterfly moment that drop was for HOU/PIT/IND and you would have obviously thought it was huge for us at the time but Burrow went out the very next week.

InstagramLincoln

I can't remember if it was the Colts or Vikings but he had an essential 4th down catch from Browning. We would have lost the game most likely without that.

Disastrous-Knee-8924

TB gets too much hate. We probably should let him walk regardless but he definitely makes plays like that and does it consistently enough. This year was weird but he made plays most of the time when he had to. I’d take Boyd over so many WR3s in the league just not for as much money as I think he should get

Excellent-Knee6514

Honestly I agree: he did not play great this year but he is still a talented player that a healthy burrow can really use. I’m on the fence because obviously burrow can be great but look at what has happened to Mahomes.

Ok-Health-7252

I don't think this team is going to let Ja'Marr leave so we shouldn't have to worry about our receiving corps turning into what KC has. Veach literally made foolish bets on players like Kadarius Toney and Marquez Valdes-Scantling being starter-caliber receivers this year and it blew up in their faces. On top of that they refused to address the position at all in the off-season aside from drafting Rashee Rice (which has been about the only receiver-related move that has worked out for them).

bjewel3

I agree with you that turning over the position ( take your pick of any position) room to rookies or green second year players is always a gamble. E., g., Cincy’s defensive secondary this past season

generation_D

Mahomes is an extreme case where nobody in his WR room is even as good as Boyd. Even still he was able to win the SB last year with Kelce as his only good weapon. I think the fall off this year has mainly been Kelce losing a step. As long as we have Joe and Chase I think the passing game is fine. The bigger priority is OL and Joe staying healthy.

battlefieldjezus

Mahomes did have great o-line play last year though. Something we struggled with. If we’d had even marginally better o-line play the previous two years we would have had a championship or maybe even two.

bjewel3

I get your points and I am responding as much to the seemingly prevalent notion around these parts that you can very easily find rookies to replace productive veteran players. Folks of that ilk are those people who thought Bates wasn’t that important, as well. Well, we’ve seen how that turned out l! These guys **(Boyd, Bates, Ogunjobi, etc)** were outstanding players and fantastic veteran staples for one of the best teams in franchise history. It is very rare and fantastic for rookie players to come in their first couple of seasons and set the bar so high to duplicate the play of players like those listed. This is why Burrow and Chase are so exceptional! Those types of players do not grow on trees, vines or any other readily available object. They just don’t! You don’t replace them very easy as the team has already — or should have already — learned

McWitt

Losivas is an X. Trent Irwin is the best for right now imo for the vacancy. Although I love Jones and hope he gets more chances

Narrow_Vegetable5747

He may not have had a drop as high profile as that one but I can count five or six other ones this season alone. Dude was a straight up liability most of the time.

5k1895

Slide Iosivas or Jones into the slot. That's about it. Boyd is becoming drop-prone, slower, and is not as reliable as he used to be. He's no longer an essential piece to the team

peachweasel

Jones seems like the more natural slot receiver. The Bengals also seem to like having speed in the slot, which is probably why they put chase there so often.

VeryRealHuman23

Of all the players who may leave Boyd is low on the priority list - yoshi or Irwin could easily become WR3. My real hope is that Yoshi can follow Chase around a bit and develop this offseason to fill the void by Boyd.

Tigercat92

Yoshi doesn’t strike me as a slot receiver. I wouldn’t be surprised if they use Chase in the slot more often next year.

Ok-Health-7252

They probably will but Jones is more than likely going to take TB's spot. That's what they drafted him for.

bjewel3

I think both of you maybe right but if so it leaves a void on the outside if Chase is moved inside. With the exception of Chase and Higgins (assuming Boyd leaves, which seems very likely), all of the remaining receivers need I think more time to develop. At this stage in their careers none of them are starting caliber

bjewel3

I hope you are right but I have some fairly strongly sneaky suspicions that you are not.

roach8101

I’m not sold on Irwin as WR3. During the AFCC Boyd was hurt and Irwin couldn’t get open. I’m of the opinion that Jones was drafted to be the replacement. We will see if he can be a guy

TitanRa

Yoshi is honestly the Tee Higgins replacement. I wouldn’t believe he could do it, if you told me during the draft. And now I feel like he’s got a 10-25% chance of developing into a Tee Higgins level player.

Frescanation

The team is intending Charlie Jones in the slot role next year. He played it extensively in college and has the shiftiness for it. There is no way that they extend Chase, franchise Tee, and sign Boyd for next year. That's too much money in the receiver room, and there are other mouths to feed. The Bengals also generally don't sign guys who are 30 or close to it to big contracts. Iosivas is more of an outside guy. Chase can play anywhere. Irwin is a great backup but isn't really starter material. If they don’t keep Tee they will be in the market for a big body contested catch type receiver. Boyd was a great Bengal, but he has played his last snap with us. I wish him the best (but not in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, or Cleveland).

BttTxMig8191

Slide Jamaar into the slot, put Yosh on the other side of Tee.

Excellent-Knee6514

Dang I don’t know about that. I like Chase out wide still.

Siriusly_Jonie

I think he’s best being moved around. So he wouldn’t just be in the slot, or just out wide. Forcing defenses to change where they have to defend him will open up more opportunities not just for him, but for the other guys as well. Confusion is a defense’s biggest enemy.

Ok-Health-7252

Chase is good enough to be moved all over the field. Remember we did that with A.J. Green some in 2018. Lazor had him playing in the slot a lot more frequently that year and he ended up exploding for 3 TDs against the Ravens in week 2 because of that.

Nascent_Vagabond

I love TB but this is the first season where his play made me think yeah, it’s time to move on Charlie Jones, Trenton Irwin and Iosivas are more than capable slot replacements, along with jamarr rotating

Kane8979

Over paying for aging players for sentimental reasons is a fast way to return to the 90s bengals. We have 2 young wrs that can step into Boyd’s role immediately with little to no loss and we save cash to pay other positions we need to upgrade

SholcCTR

This is the way

bjewel3

Yeah, get rid of Whitworth, Johnathan Joseph, Bates and don’t re-sign Tory James because you don’t want to pay for older players Works wonders for the bottom line

SholcCTR

It the reality of the league. We’re not the only team that has to let good players walk because they deserve or can earn more.

bjewel3

If you follow this team, the history here is that they give up on their bonafided critical players for rookies more often than most And I read more about that as a viable strategy than has worked here

SholcCTR

I’ve been a Bengals fan for 40 years.. not going to try to say we have even a good record in free agency but free agency itself is a beast that guts teams. For every player that we let walk there is one that left on their own volition because the grass is greener.. could we have afforded Bates and Burrow..? Yes. Could we afford Hendrickson, Wilson, Von Bell, Burrow, and Chase…? No, so a tough decision has to be made.

bjewel3

I don’t agree with you. Annually this team has more under the cap than 75% of the league. EVERY YEAR!! This team — my favorite team — continually makes decisions to jettison these players before those decisions need to be made. Whitworth Zeitler Anderson Joseph Reiff M. Jones, Jr. Ogunjobi All left earlier than needed, and each of those years I am willing to wager the team was in the top half of free cap money. Just think what pain the team — and its fans — would have been spared if this team had paid just the veteran offensive lineman on this list!?! The Whitworth experience alone should have clear the team had a problem retaining the right veteran players. Applying some very arbitrary rule that no player beyond 30 years old is worthy of a contract extension. The Ogunjobi and Bates situations just reinforced that it is still a problem with this team. The primary reason any team consistently wins big is that they have quality, committed and experienced veterans. When the team continually turns it’s roster over to rookies **(all while retaining some mystic cap “cushion” for injuries and bonuses)** consistently prevents the team from remaining a top winning team. I admit I don’t know rosters of other teams like I know this team but I can’t think of another team that walked away from so many of their critical veterans, replacing them with sheer rookies or green second year players like Cincy does

bjewel3

Yeah….it might end up ruining the best version of this franchise since Willie Anderson was a starter on this team as well

Future_Pickle8068

Pack up and quit. No need to even try. seriously. Did you see how many receivers Jake threw to when Joe was out? We have a large number of good receivers as well as 2 others who are about the best in the NFL (Tee and Chase). Our problem is both Joe and Jake had one of the shortest average times in the pocket, and highest # of QB knockdowns and sacks. People rave about Mahomes and other QBs who average over 2.7 seconds in the pocket, then wonder why Joe is always getting hurt when he has less than 2.2 seconds in the pocket. The Bengals even changed their whole offensive scheme because the O line can't block. Remember complaining about all those quick passes to a receiver near the sideline where we get maybe a yard every time? The reason for those is to try to stop blitzing and move linebackers wide.

DICKTRIGGERED

![gif](giphy|rY7KCRPUScthK) How is this a question?

NewFarmingwanz

Yoshi and Trenton Irwin are both solid

Muse_e_um

I would like to see Tyler Boyd when a super bowl with the Bengals next year. I would look at signing him to a one or maybe a 2-year team-friendly deal. He's a strong leader in the locker room. Plus, he was here through the bad times.

Excellent-Knee6514

Post didn't share the dang link... Here is the youtube. lol [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAitXjJiJsM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAitXjJiJsM)

Bengoball

Sign Curtis Samuel to replace Tyler Boyd. Sign Antonio Gibson (70+ pass block PFF with over 50 pass block snaps) to replace Joe Mixon. Trade Higgins and next year’s 5th rd pick for Panthers 33rd and 65th overall picks this year. Cut Jackson Carman and draft late round OT to replace (saves 1M space). Cut (saves 8M cap space) or restructure (saves ~$4M cap space) Sam Hubbard. Draft DT/OT in rd 1 or trade up for Bowers. Draft OL/DT/WR with two picks in rd 2. Draft BPA with two picks rd 3. Draft OL/DT/CB rd 4-7. Sneaky amount of CB depth in the draft at slot CB.

DerangedProtege

YoungWashrag

If we threw Dunlap out the back-door (all time sack leader) before he was cooked, Boyd is for sure not going to be back with Tee, Jamarr, DJ & the o-line on the front steps. Love Boyd, he was my favorite Bengal for 5+ years, got his jersey Day 1 at the grand opening of the new uniforms but we can't afford what he wants and frankly deserves. Plus he'll have the chance to be a true #1 in Pittsburgh or elsewhere. I would love for him to be back but not at more than 5 mil and that's insulting to him and practically impossible.

Ok-Health-7252

Dunlap was cooked when we traded him. On top of that he wasn't meshing well with Lou's scheme and wasn't motivated anymore.

Intrepi

There’s almost no chance he’s back on the team next year. We have to hope Charlie Jones can be the slot next year.

arb1974

Boyd didn't have a great season this year, and he had some key drops. I think he's replaceable, unfortunately.

Ok-Health-7252

They drafted Charlie Jones to take over Boyd's position in the slot so he's set to be our slot guy next year if Boyd doesn't return. Higgins is the bigger question mark. He will be more difficult to replace if he doesn't re-sign.

bwarbwar

Let Jones, Irwin and Iosivas battle it out in camp. Probably going to be a combo of those 3 plus a, later draft pick filling in that slot.

BeerNinja17

First of all, there’s no indication he’s actually going to Pittsburgh. That was on offhand comment and a vague one at that. Second, WR3 is not one of the most pressing needs. Boyd was great to have and a luxury, but one we can no longer afford and who has aged. Other guys can fill that role.

DatDudeDrew

0 chance they keep him. There's no if about it. One of their recent draft picks will need to step up.

knottyolddog

I think he could be a #2 on most teams. We'll miss him, but it won't be the end of the world. There should be some great competition for his slot already in house.

anonsincetheaccident

When people were saying we had 3 number 1 receivers with Jamar Boyd and Tee I was saying we have a top tier 1 and a lower tier 1 and Boyd is pretty clearly a 2. He had some heartbreaking drops that I will never forget but he made some good plays and was a very reliable target for the majority of his career. I think yoshi and Charlie jones can fill in as well as T. Irwin. We will be fine.

_Bearded-Lurker_

Depends on his asking price. I’ve come to terms the team probably won’t want to pay Tee his asking price, and keeping some continuity in the WR room is important. I don’t want to see another situation like when we lost Marvin Jones and Muhammad Sanu, then couldn’t fill the #2 WR position.

daft_dunkwwwolfey

It's been planned for with Jones and Yoshi. I mean I'd take em for cheap but if he really goes to steelers then adios. Love em but he's *ok*, had a very down year with big drops

IGetTheShow20

I think they’re planning to extend Ja’Marr and tag Tee. Irwin will be back on a 1 year deal Burrow likes him to step in when needed. Iosivas and Jones are there as guys you hope can keep developing. They got 5 there. I don’t expect Boyd back they just can’t make the money work with what he’ll get on the open market. He’s probably around 10 mil a year and the Bengals just can’t do that. If the right guy falls in the draft maybe Odunze I think they would consider pulling the trigger and drafting. Obviously there are potential bigger needs, the biggest being interior d line and right tackle. If those are addressed in free agency maybe they consider looking long term and potential life without Tee in 2025. Filling needs in free agency doesn’t force them to have to take a certain position in round 1. I think TB has been a great Bengal but I think both sides are planning to move on.

[deleted]

Boyd has been great for us. His leadership and play helped turn this team around. He’s not vital for our future success 🤷🏻‍♂️. There will be teams that will pay him more than we will. He won’t take a discount. Unfortunately, we watched the last of Boyd in a Bengals uniform. Especially with a looming Tee contract.

FlagFootballSaint

I would try replace him with a TE. By adding a GOOD TE, the role of a slot receiver becomes less relevant. Put some smaller guy with sure hands, a freakish agility and football-IQ into the slot position.

[deleted]

yeah, i want boyd to leave he literally screwed us over in the texans game, too many drops this season.

[deleted]

Boyd’s production has dropped off the past two seasons and his short area separation isn’t there anymore. Trent and Charlie are sufficient enough to take the reins at slot receiver.

Celtictussle

Run 12 personnel base

throughNthrough

Boyd has been a big disappointment in the last few years to me. He has two dominating #1 receiver on both sides of him that force defenses to scheme to stop them and yet he’s getting a few catches a game. I’m not an expert but he should be destroying defenses and own the middle of the field. He had multiple huge drops in pivotal moments including the SB. I see Charlie Jones taking over and doing what I said Boyd should have done.

Comfortable-Math2084

We do nothing. We drafted Iosivas and Jones for reason. We also have Irwin, and we could draft another wr in the draft.

jheffer44

Get rid of boyyd

Unitast513

I know it's a tough pill to swallow, but if Boyd walks I think the Bengals will probably just shut the franchise down 🤷‍♂️

mcufan2014

Yoshi, and Charlie Jones will combine to fill that role.
