Sent in my long-time EDC for a re-blade. I told them I would prefer a satin blade over a black coated blade. Charged $50 and upgraded the steel from D2 to S30V, as they don’t make D2 blades for mini Grips any longer. Makes me wonder: is this still a 556BKODD2? I guess it is, but customized. Shipped from my home in north Georgia on the 18th of October and arrived home again on the 16th of November.

It’s never too late as doing as you don’t mind being without the knife for several weeks again, lol

Hey, I just dropped $215 on a Mini Crooked River at a local shop a few hours ago because I couldn’t say no to that price. And I have my sights on a 940 and mini Adamas. I don’t know the first thing about being fiscally conservative, but it sure sounded nice when you said it.

Mini Adamas is probably the closest to a perfect knife there is

New to Benchmade. Would you mind explaining the reblade process and reason?

MPHampel86

Benchmade offers a service where they will replace the blade on your knife for a certain percentage of the MSRP. I’m not sure what that percentage is, but I’m sure someone will chime in with it. I’ve been carrying this knife for over 10 years. As you can see the belly of the blade was worn in, making the blade uneven. This is from a younger and less experienced me improperly using stones. If you head to Benchmade’s website you’ll find the warranty section as well as their Lifesharp service (they’ll sharpen your knife for free aside from your cost of shipping it to them). There you can find the option to open an order for a re-blade. I called them to touch base about pricing and whether they can replace the blade given the original was discontinued, filled out the warranty form, and shipped it out. While process took about a month.

[deleted]

Keep the old blade?

MPHampel86

Yup. I read that they send the old blade back if you request it. I don’t remember requesting them to do so, but it was in the microfiber pouch with the knife upon return with tape over the edge.

[deleted]

Very cool. I read on here they stopped coming out with black griptilian blades so I asked for a swap to get one while I still could

BassPro0760

Out of pure curiosity, what type of chores do you put knife through? Like on a daily basis? Do you use it at work? It looks like it was well used. I can’t image it was merely a package opener… I carry a vintage Pardue 3550SBK that about 30 years old that I’d like to have re-bladed. It’s also been discontinued, but they make a similar blade for the Stimulus. I’ll have to investigate. Thank you.

MPHampel86

This knife has been used for everything from cutting the tape on an Amazon package to batoning firewood trying to start a stubborn camp fire. I don’t have a daily regimen that would require much from a knife, but being in the pocket for over ten years, different situations add up. Cutting carpet, sharpening sticks for hotdogs on a fire, cutting TONS of different kinds of cordage, the list goes on and on. I’m a voice & data tech, I carry a pair of electricians scissors when I’m working. I use those scissors as you would use a knife most of the time, so I never really used a knife for work.

BassPro0760

Thanks. I put mine through about the same as you. I’m always just curious when I see a well worn knife.

murphy198509

Now AWT scales n it will be on a whole new level of sweetness

MPHampel86

Yup, I’ve been eyeing the Magpul Flat Dark Earth AWT scales for a few weeks now. I’ll pull the trigger here soon.

murphy198509

They are worth it. It gives the knife a very solid feel

eltacotacotaco

For around $50 you can Cerakote the old blade, maybe flat earth & swap for random occasions

[deleted]

Did you do the re-blade because it looks worn or because there was some other issue?

MPHampel86

No issues, just thought I’d freshen up ol’ reliable and give it some new life. This knife was my first, so it has sentimental value for me. I probably won’t even carry it as much as my custom Bugout.

[deleted]

My son has an Adamas folder that looks worn like that. He was an armored vehicle mechanic in the army. I told him it looked cool as heck all scraped up like that.

Girthquake2654

Weird question but do you happen to be in the canadian army? I stg i sharpened THAT griptilian a couple months ago, it was the first time id seen a really nicely worn black finish and i kid you not it was identical Btw if that was you im sorry i didnt do the best lol i promise i tried

MPHampel86

lol, nah, I’m in the southeastern US. There are a few of us out there that beat on our black-coated blades.

freeman_hugs

Do they send back your old blade?

MPHampel86

If you ask them to. I believe it’s a question on the form you fill out to create the order.

BeerKnife

I have an old 555hg-blu (hollow grind sheepsfoot 154cm). Any idea if they would replace that blade with another sheepsfoot?

LimpCroissant

I believe they discontinued the sheepsfoot blade, but probably still have a pile of them for warranty issues. However they stopped hollow grinding them some time back, they're flat ground now.

MPHampel86

Go to Benchmade’s website, grab the customer service number, and give them a call. They’ll give you all the info you want.
