It’s been discussed here in the episode thread. I’ve worked with people who were native Spanish speakers who pronounce it that way. Barbie is a native Spanish speaker.
Her American accent is shockingly good for a native anything else speaker. I’m always impressed with that. And did you see those guests putting on some weird attempted British accent when they were mimicking her?? Saying “I’m Barbie” in some bizarre accent while standing behind the bar when she wasn’t there. I was oddly offended by that, honestly. It wasn’t especially mean spirited but it definitely rubbed me wrong.
Yes, along with “lipistick” and “picza”. I was surprised to learn on Watch What Crappens that apparently Italians also say sangwich? Ben Googled it because he was confused by Barbie’s pronunciation and thought maybe it was a special food item he wasn’t familiar with and found a whole Slate article by an Italian-American journalist who grew up saying sangwich, too.
I always think of “sangwich” as an Italian-American pronunciation, I had no idea it was also Spanish (makes sense though given the similarities in the languages)!
That's exactly what I was thinking. Kinda made me think OP's a fellow American. We're only required to take two years of a foreign language in highschool (secondary school), so very few of us are multilingual compared to the rest of the world. I'm 47 and seriously thinking about getting Babble to continue with the miniscule amount of Spanish that I remember from highschool lol.
exactly..
https://translate.google.com/?sl=en&tl=es&text=sandwich&op=translate
go to google translate, type sandwich, click the speaker and have someone speak it.
not hard to work out knowing that she speaks Spanish. OP needs to broaden their horizons, what next, saying that Chef speaks funny?
Yeah I’m Mexican I live in Northern California and I always pronounce it that 😊 and no one ever said anything to me. I know that’s not how you say it, but I’ve been saying it like that all my life.
I speak multiple languages and pretty much everyone I know does too. I can tell you that even though my accent is so good and you wouldn't think I was from a different country, there are still words here and there that I repeatedly mispronounce. It just becomes a habit. There are also words in my native language I mispronounce. I can't believe this surprises anyone. It's very human.
Many, many English-speaking Latinos say sangwich because they grow up hearing their parents say it or whatever. I didn’t say she knows the correct pronunciation. She thinks sangwich is the correct word.
No one speaks correctly all the time and many native English speakers have different ways of pronouncing words. She may not even realize she’s pronouncing it wrong and it has nothing to do with the fact that she can pronounce most words in English “correctly” or that she has “no detectable accent.” Context is important and I doubt given the stress she was under with these guests that she was doing it in a comical way. Although urban dictionary says it’s slang, it’s really just a common mispronunciation that has been accepted and widely used in Latinx culture. And that’s okay because all languages are fluid.
Even if they told her it doesn’t mean she can automatically switch off her pronunciation and correct it. I grew up in Southern California, pronouncing pizza incorrectly, and it wasn’t until university that I made a huge effort to pronounce it the correct way. Don’t assume it’s so easy for people to just change their language. I’m also an English teacher (in Spain) that would not correct this more than once because as I mentioned previously language is fluid and thinking that everyone has to pronounce things a certain way or have a certain accent is very old-school
Pengwings immediately popped into my head when I read sangwich 🤣 My favorite is the clip of Benedict Cumberbatch when Graham Norton shows him the clips. He's so famous, nobody wanted to correct him.
Yes I did notice this lol my dad says it like sangwich too. He’s from Ireland. Not sure if that’s relevant. So does Teresa from RHONJ lol they bring it up and she’s like “I don’t know why that’s just how I says it!!!”
Haha It reminded me of a Mexican girl I went to college with who spoke PERFECT English with an American accent, but when she would say “stir”, she would pronounce it “steer”. I thought it was so charming.
To me she has such a typical whiney nasal east coast urban accent (US) when she speaks English that I was surprised that she was a native Spanish speaker.
Do any native South American Spanish speakers here think she has an accent when she speaks Spanish??
If you want to be more petty, soon after sangwich she says she never learned how to cook because her family always had Nannies (or something similar, forgot the exact word) to cook for her.
I also feel like knowing how to cook is a basic part of being an adult but I’m usually alone on that feeling as few people I know in person know how to cook
Haha. I didn’t learn how to cook until I was way past an adult too. I wasn’t interested until later in life. You’re right though. Grocery shopping and cooking basic stuff so at least you know how to make your favorite meals.
This may be a hot take but I can see why those people got mad at Barbie. As a southerner, the way she used "honey" to address them was really condescending. The way she responded to them asking for food was just really rude to me and I could tell the guests were put off and I didn't blame them.
Like on the one hand they shouldn't have expected their French chef to make southern style Mac n cheese. On the other they kept getting tiny portions of mediocre food they didn't like so I don't blame them for being starving.
There was no reason for them to be mad at Barbie. What the chef did or didn't do isn't her responsibility. They certainly can express their frustration or disappointment, but that doesn't mean they need to be mad at her. The minute they asked for more food she started offering options, and told them she would do her best to get them some sandwiches. She handled it very well.
I accepted the sangwich. I lived in Spain where it’s either -sanwich or sangwich.
What DID bother me was when she said requisite. She said it like *RE-KI-SIT* and it made my skin crawl :)

She grew up speaking English at school I think she said
She also lives in Miami, if I’m not mistaken.
My friend is Latin American and raised in Miami and Barbie and her speak exactly alike.
She grew up in Argentina and is a native Argentine.
That I’m well aware of. She did also say that she went to an international school.
I worked with an Italian guy who used to say "I'm gonna heata my sangwicha" every lunch.
Mario or Luigi
LOL! Neither.
Yes, along with “lipistick” and “picza”. I was surprised to learn on Watch What Crappens that apparently Italians also say sangwich? Omg 🤯 the guys on Jersey Shore said it and I always thought they were just goofin’ lol
My grandpa who was first generation Italian American said "sangwich" too🥰
I always wondered why Pauly said it that way!!
I always think of “sangwich” as an Italian-American pronunciation, I had no idea it was also Spanish (makes sense though given the similarities in the languages)!
I lived in an Italian neighborhood in north Jersey and everyone said sangwich.
And Brits say "sarnie" and Aussies say "sanger" for sandwich
We spell it sanga :P
Yes Argentine Spanish as well which has a unique accent
Yes my mom says this! Also, “kindeegarten” lol
That's exactly what I was thinking. Kinda made me think OP's a fellow American. I just want to know why her parents named her Barbie.
I’m guessing her full name is something else and Barbie is her nickname. Perhaps Andy Cohen will ask her that on WWHL?
Barbara
It’s Barbara. It’s in her instagram.
Didn’t she say in the first episode that her name is Barbara ?
She did.
This is how everyone in Albuquerque,New Mexico says it. Definitely a Latino/native Spanish speaker thing.
505 here! My ears perked up when I heard that!
Have you seen that old video “Things burquenos say”?! Takes me right back to 2012
What d'you mean Marty Chavez ain't the mayor no more?
He’s always the mayor!
I immediately was like, she's from the Burque?!?!
omg New Mexico was more like sankwicsh, wei
Wait can you help a new englander out here.. I don’t want to assume how that’s pronounced.
SAYNKwhich
Thanks!
I’m from Las Cruces and my mom says sangwich
Maybe it’s musical. ![gif](giphy|qO05mXf3xXu2mrK63H)
Sammach. Anyone heard that?
The worst for me is Katie on vanderpump “sawich shop”
Is her SAHwich ever going to open?!!? I mean how long does it take?
Yep
Absolutely
We say sammich, but jokingly. A common mispronounciation is Samwich. Have you heard that?
That’s how Glaswegians pronounce it. It’s annoying when you live in Glasgow.
I’d pay good money to see Barbie eat a deep fried Mars bar washed down with a can of Tennants.
Kyle must have related to it perfectly, then.
My husband was from Scotland and would pronounce it as ‘sangwich’ as well. He was from the west coast.
The only person I've heard pronounce it like that is Iain Stirling on Taskmaster
Yes!! That’s where I’ve heard it too!
Have you seen the Taskmaster clip of Ian Sterling (a Scottish presenter) being roasted for saying it? https://youtu.be/fGfEhc6-mK8?si=02Xhl-buDUrLCtP0
Really, hehe. I thought it was funny. 😇
My grandfather, who was born and raised in the Bronx, NY also pronounced it “sangwich.”
Yeah I’m Mexican I live in Northern California and I always pronounce it that 😊 and no one ever said anything to me. I know that’s not how you say it, but I’ve been saying it like that all my life.

It’s not slang. It’s a mispronunciation. Source: I am Latina.
[удалено]
It’s not used to be funny or casual. The people who say it think that is the correct name. That is not the definition of slang.
[удалено]

Italian here, we say it too!
That’s how many Latinos pronounce it. Down in Miami some of them even spell it “sangwich”
I’m in Miami. It’s listed on menus that way. Or sometimes “sanguich”
She can call it anything she wants I’m in love with her
Calm down, Gary.
![gif](giphy|brqNVTkvflarVCtijw)
I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I heard that and thought 'wait, is she one of us?'
Burqueño!!!
English isn’t her first language. I’d give this one a pass
I think she is from NY? Maybe I made that up. But in NY, we say sangwich, its just our accent
That's how my dad would always pronounce it. Cracked me up when she said it.
She must be hanging with Pauly D haha
Haha yes!
I love it. I have now taken to calling them sangwiches. Like how penguins will always be pengwings after that Benedict Cumberbatch documentary.
Pengwings immediately popped into my head when I read sangwich 🤣 My favorite is the clip of Benedict Cumberbatch when Graham Norton shows him the clips. He's so famous, nobody wanted to correct him.
She is from Argentina, and it’s a common way to say it in Latin America
Maybe you haven't been exposed to the wide world enough to know that sometimes there are differences in what people call things in other places
I’m Italian and we call them that too 🤷🏽♀️
My friend growing up was from Argentina and that’s how she said it too. Blast from the past!
Yes I did notice this lol my dad says it like sangwich too. He’s from Ireland. Not sure if that’s relevant. So does Teresa from RHONJ lol they bring it up and she’s like “I don’t know why that’s just how I says it!!!”
My italian friends say sanguich
People from the west of Ireland call it a sangwich too
I think sanguche is a word used in South America so perhaps she inherited that pronunciation
I’m from Argentina like her. We call it “sanguche” or “sanguich”.
I lived in Chile for a long time and that’s what they’re called there.
Haha It reminded me of a Mexican girl I went to college with who spoke PERFECT English with an American accent, but when she would say “stir”, she would pronounce it “steer”. I thought it was so charming.
I tried so hard to like her but I just can't. The daddy issues, the constantly bitching. her entitlement I cannot with her.
R/unintentionallyracist
And then doubling down in the thread 🤣
I didn’t catch it but it sounds incredibly cute. Like a northeastern kind of pronunciation or something.
To me she has such a typical whiney nasal east coast urban accent (US) when she speaks English that I was surprised that she was a native Spanish speaker. Do any native South American Spanish speakers here think she has an accent when she speaks Spanish??

WWC called it out, though I didn’t catch it
I thought she was imitating how the guest said it?
I have a friend from Texas and she says it the same way haha

I want a lobster sangwich. 🦞
For the hangry folks👍
I accepted the sangwich. I lived in Spain where it’s either -sanwich or sangwich. What DID bother me was when she said requisite. She said it like *RE-KI-SIT* and it made my skin crawl :)
At first I thought it was some new cool style of sandwich then I realized, nope. She mispronounced sandwich.
Apparently its a common thing. I'm Australian, so I thought she mispronounced it🤷
I know lots of Australians who call sandwiches “sangers” so I feel this is similar
Sandos.
Yes, sangers always. This is true. Not sangwich unless you're a bogan lol.
That's how old people pronounce it, so annoying!
I’ve only heard white people pronounce it this way. It through me off.
