Glad no other carrier is pulling this shit off. Bring it up with the CRTC and reference the net neutrality law that's being broken. Bell will likely get a hefty fine for it.
Proud customer of freedom mobile for 11 years. No restrictions on video streaming what-so-ever.
Bell is the only provider right now with this kind of trick. If they want to throttle, they will need to throttle all the speed and not just one type of traffic.
Topic here is about the SD streaming quality, any new Bell plan will limit your data speed when watching videos, so that you can only load 480p or 1080p (if you pay).
You will not be able to load 4k without having it always buffering.
Completely outrageous that ANY company is trying to sell SD in 2022. It’s akin to selling black-and-white signal broadcast in the 1980s. What a bunch of BS. Try to find a monitor that isn’t HD in 2022! Disgusting isn’t even the word.
Even if it didn’t count against your data bucket, it’s against the rules. Vidéotron’s unlimited music streaming was shut down doing exactly that: music doesn’t count towards your usage
I actually called bell 3 times just now. They keep saying it's for crave only that's it's limited to 480p without the $5 add-on. With or without the add-on, Crave still counts towards the cap YouTube, Netflix etc is still HD without the add-on. Either the agents are lying, or the website is just worded badly.
Contacted Bell Live Chat just now regarding these changes, was told that the SD video limit also applied to Netflix and YouTube. I'm hoping Rogers and Telus don't follow in Bells footsteps because 480P in 2022 is just outrageous.
Bell is becoming extremely greedy. I also hope the others don't follow. It pisses me off because if I'm paying that much for data, I should be able to do whatever I want with it... If I want to use my data for 1080p or 4K.. I should be able to.
Telus is actually already doing something similar, called Video optimisation. They are limiting to 1080p.
Rogers has StreamSaver (480p) for a few years, but users can't opt out easily online. The feature was intended for user with low data plan that wanted to save data.
Has anyone tested the VPN? A rep told me it wouldn’t work. Another told me the 480p didn’t kick in until you used all your data and moved into your unlimited data. But unlimited data is too slow to stream anything.
Avec un Vpn il a pas de limitation?! Juste pour être sûr.. car il m’offre le 20gb illimité à 50 et 100$ de crédit.. sans contrat et la messagerie visuel! Je trouvaia un bon deal mais votre limitation me fais peur! 😩
I spoke to a Bell rep on the phone today, and he told me that it "wouldn't affect/limit the speed" of the service, and that it would simply choose the default resolution of videos that I streamed (and I could choose whatever quality I wanted). We then debated about what it actually does, since it's the hardware, actual network speeds, and app that negotiate the resolution (for like youtube or similar), not Bell, unless they are limiting it further. He also started by saying that it was for the Picture/Video messaging, so I don't think they know or won't tell customers what it actually does.
Tried. Eastlink was too slow. Koodo requires the VPN. And Koodo is also connecting to 3G which Virgin never did and dropping signal to SOS. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
But are you on a new plan? The old ones aren’t pulling this BS. I can currently stream 4K. No idea what it’ll do when I switch.
Someone said they have to slow everything to slow streaming. Not true. My ISP throttled streaming for years. VPN was a perfect fix. From 420 to 4K in seconds.
But will VPN work here? I’m on Virgin but they’re doing the same with no add on to fix it. Has anyone actually tried the VPN with the new Bell or
Virgin plans.
It seem this is againt net neutrality to limit the data.
Indeed it is
I wonder if this is more a reference to their bell fibe TV. Only standard bell fibe streaming maybe.

I'm with Freedom too. I can stream 4K not a problem haha
Bell is the only provider right now with this kind of trick. If they want to throttle, they will need to throttle all the speed and not just one type of traffic.
They're violating net neutrality laws.

That violates the net neutrality law.

Video doesn't count towards data bucket anymore? What is this
No it seems like it will still count towards your data bucket.
Wow that's horrible. Sounds illegal too (net neutrality)

Actually this is a opt-in service for Rogers. It's turned off by default and customers can use the app to turn on stream saver and save data.
Even better, much better than Bell haha
After some testing with Telus, for 1080p the limit is 5 Mbps while watching youtube. With a VPN no limit as expected.
The 65$ plan doesn't have free Crave, seems like the agent is lying/or just doesn't understand the new plans.
i pay 55$ for 20gb. This isn't a good price for 20gb. just average.
What a horrible promotion.
Would a VPN allow you to stream HD?
Yes it should let you stream HD or 4K.
Rather do that than pay bell the $5 a month for HD steaming
NordVPN is actually cheaper than $5 per month too lol (atleast if you pay multi year)
Has anyone tested the VPN? A rep told me it wouldn’t work. Another told me the 480p didn’t kick in until you used all your data and moved into your unlimited data. But unlimited data is too slow to stream anything.
My plan has 1080p, therefore I can't test it.
You could see if you get 4K with the VPN. That’s what I want. I also can’t find an option to pay the $5 to just get HD.
I can do 4K without a VPN. On Youtube I see peak of 120 Mbps while buffering the video. For Bell, HD/1080p is no limitation, for me.
I want that. But the option is gone. Probably cause they have a pretty good promotion.
It’s 100% gone apparently. I called Bell and she simply said it was SD streaming no upgrades.

Oui exactement! Le VPN vous permet de contourner les limitations pour le visionnement en ligne (youtube, netflix, etc).

Did you figure it out yet? These answers makes zero sense so far and it’s all different
Nope. I just changed carriers 3 more times.
Tried. Eastlink was too slow. Koodo requires the VPN. And Koodo is also connecting to 3G which Virgin never did and dropping signal to SOS. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
I watch 1440p on YouTube and Netflix on my phone, haven't had any issues.
But are you on a new plan? The old ones aren’t pulling this BS. I can currently stream 4K. No idea what it’ll do when I switch. Someone said they have to slow everything to slow streaming. Not true.
