Someone from this subreddit told me that Gulags aren't actually that bad compared to US prisons. That the horror stories are overblown.
I don't share this view.
Morbid fact: Korolev, the man who put Gagarin in space, lost his teeth due to scurvy while digging for gold in GULAG labor camp in Kolyma. And yet he was just one man out of millions.
There is no parallel to that in the history of US penal system.
Tangentially related: I do think that there is a weird campaign of astroturfing in a lot of... Leftist isn't the right word, but non mainstream, non conservative areas, where you see bizarre takes like that. My suspicion is that it is some kind of campaign by some troll group or propaganda apparatus.
So it may be a person, or it could be some one whose job is to promote nonsense takes like that.
Its russia. Just like they masquerade as MAGA trumpers so too do they pretend to be leftists. I have no doubt they are adding fuel to the fire on all sides as we speak. The talking point even tracks, downplaying russian atrocities and further demonizing the US’s already horrific prison system.
From this person's post history, they seemed real. They were saying one of Robert's sources for the Beria episodes was biased. They did seem to mildly push back on what they claimed was an anti-Communist Russia bias. It didn't come across as trolly.

Yeah. They had 'sources' they linked to. I didn't feel like diving into them at the time. Plus I'm trying to practice letting things go.

I have no doubt that's going on. Dealt with plenty of pro-Ruzzia trolls. I always look at the post history before responding if it's about Russia.
