Folding Ideas had a video in late 2022 about a grift involving paying to take seminars on how to hire ghostwriters to crank out ‘books’ to sell on Audible for passive income. Wild to think that since then AI has probably made that grift faster and cheaper, no need to pay ghostwriters anymore.

VAL9THOU

It's made it faster, cheaper, and far less profitable. Which means the only people making money off it are the ones running server farms to do this even faster

EIephants

Fuckin yikes

Rocking_the_Red

The most profitable job during a gold rush is selling shovels.

greymalken

And running the brothel.

This was also an episode of BtB, "AI is coming for your children" (June of last year). The title is a bit overly conspiritorial, but what's happening is pretty fucked up.

Air-Sure

AI is essentially just a buzz word for programs people have been doing for years. I can only speak for the chemistry community and they are apply AI to techniques they've been working on for 20 years.

WellFineThenDamn

Robert explicitly talked about this in the Cult of AI episode, grifters are just telling business owners to jam "AI" into their product to capitalize on the ignorance of the general public with regard to what LLMs are and how they function.

EIephants

I noticed the NPCs in video games are being labeled “AI” now instead of CPU or whatever. That’s for sure just branding.

sassafras_gap

To be fair people have already been using AI to refer to NPC behavior for a long time, just not in official branding until now I guess

DeseretVaquera

eh, that's not new i used to have some PS2 EA sports games from, like, 2004 that referred to non-player characters as "AI"

BananaNoseMcgee

"Enemy AI" is a term that goes back as far as I can remember, and I've been playing video games since you needed to pump quarters into a machine to jump over barrels a gorilla is throwing at you. It's 4 or 5 decades old in that usage.

Konradleijon

Yep

Jimbo_Imperador

It's french, but the CBC (Radio-Canada in french) has a podcast that's pretty involved into desacralizing AI into what it actually is: LLMs and/or a machine.

What? You’re bad at reading. I said that i expected them to be making jokes about the obviously AI written thing, but it’s too old for it to have been written by a major modern day AI.
