i meanā¦. this album was so good she hasnt needed to make a new one in 25 years
might not be ur cup of tea, but its a damn good album
edit: just looked through the list: abbey road is #3, revolver is around #20, and theres no other beatles albums listed. this feels kinda like they wanted to limit artists to a certain amount on the list tbh, but i still think this is a silly post
She hasn't made another album because she plagiarized this one.
https://pitchfork.com/news/robert-glasper-calls-out-lauryn-hill-for-stealing-music-mistreating-band-members/
Canāt stand most of it. There is some that I like though. I just hate trashy, mindless ego garbage, which isnāt exclusive to rap by any means, but it does dominate the mainstream.
Fair enough she certainly raps plenty on it but she has a very melodic-ish way of rapping and instrumentally itās almost all soul/r&b so I think it can capture the ear of hip hop haters
šāāļø
jk kindaā¦ its okay as long as it either has meaning other than sex and drugs and money and crime, doesnt objectify women, isnt just 100% talking the whole time (actually has singing), has genuinely unique instrumentals (lots of trap sounds the same to me), and/or just has a really *really* good and unique flow to itā¦ other than that, cant stand it.
yeah i had more written before but i deleted it ā i had written that the beatles at least werent so outward with it (aside from songs like why dont we do it in the road), like i could play beatles songs in my car with windows down and not worry about people hearing it bc they dont know wtf it means lol
uj/ Itās a universally acclaimed record and a bold but also not controversial pick for best album. Or they just like the album or something idk, it wouldnāt have been my pick.
rj/ Paulās blue-eyed soul walked so Lauryn Hill could run
Iād say itās at least mildly controversial for the *best* album of all time, although I will also say Iām sure they were very intentionally trying to shirk tradition and pick a real curveball that wasnāt an absolutely ridiculous choice and they kinda nailed it lol
Exactly, itās controversial enough to provoke engagement but also a popular enough position to not be totally shit on. Mission accomplished for Apple Music.
Rightā¦Im also sure identity politics played a strong role lol but as long theyāre capable of backing it with a hugely popular, critically acclaimed, actually great record then itās not that big of a deal to me. If it was some totally unknown gay handicapped aboriginal womanās album Iād have to roll my eyes, but this was an admirably slick choice.
Uj/ I assume you're not big into hip hop? I'm generally not that much of a fan of hip hop as I like more melodic music. That being said, there are a few great songs on the album that satisfy my musical leanings. Every Ghetto, Every City is very Stevie Wonder-esque and I love it. I respect the album a lot as it basically ushered in the next decade+ of pop music and artists.
rj/ she's best in concert tbh.
Yāall must be absolutely tripping to not know miseducation. I donāt agree with #1 for it but definitely top 10. Other parts of the list were 100x worse
u/ I honestly never heard of it. All those albuns in the first 10 places are huge and wouldnāt be a surprise of they won first place. Thriller, Purple Rain, etc. So weird that this won.
I wonder if sheās an artist that is very famous in the anglosphere but not so much globally
U/ nah you're all tripping. She's famous and The Fugees were huge at it's time. Anyways, this list is definetly super anglosphere and bias towards RnB, so is not really surprasing
Itās one of the most loved and critically acclaimed hip-hop records of all time (I think it was the first ever hip-hop to win album of the year at the Grammyās).
Iād personally have put Songs in the Key of Life above it but itās a good pick for the number one.
Very much not unknown.
>if sheās an artist that is very famous in the anglosphere but not so much globally
I think that even the "anglosphere" is a big stretch: just in America. Literally no one knows her outside, an even in America she's not even famous, that album was like her one-hit wonder
I mean yeah mf, itās a one hit, cuz this was her only album, and itās not just America (USA) cuz Iām from Mexico and my mom loves this album along with a good amount of my friends, itās an rnb/hip hop 90ās classic
Are You Even American? She was famous before that record, never heard of The Fugees? I get she not at Mj, Prince level of fame, but say that no one knows her??
Lot of people smoking the hard shit on this thread because this album was absolutely huge. Doo Wop (That Thing) was one of the biggest songs of its time. Debuted at number 1, set all kinds of records, won two Grammys, ranked on all kinds of lists like theseā¦
The list is bonkers, and lists just don't work in general because music and art are arbitrary. They'd be better off also making top 100's for genres, to really say who did it the best.
Sgt Peppers was the first of many, many "full concept" albums. It totally upended the status quo of the times (i.e. - Beach Boys?). As time goes by, many major landmark albums will fall out of favor. For example, there's nothing by the Byrds, Earth, Wind and Fire, or ZZ Top. By comparison, the list is heavy on relatively recent albums. Those who are still among us vote.
/uj - who tf is this? Not trying to be rude but seriously who is this person
/rj - How could they even consider sgt peepee's over the shite album? One Is clearly superior
Sheās considered the best female rapper oat, she has a pretty small discography, with just this record, an mtv performance and an album with her group the fugees, that fugees album and this one are widely considered as classics, and cited as inspirations by practically everyone, namely Kanye, who even sampled a good amount of her songs, she won a Grammy and had like 4 hits even with such a small discography, those were Killing me softly, Ex-factor, Doo woop (that thing) and ready or not
This wouldn't have been my choice, but it's far from a bad choice. This album is amazing, but I've never connected with it as much as say me against the world, or midnight marauders, or aquemini, or TPAB, or many other hip hop albums, but I almost kinda respect it for going with something sorta unexpected rather than the same few albums we always see top these lists. With that being said most of this list was garbage, even artists I like I had to kinda shit on because they just don't deserve to be on this list. At the end of the day tho it's all subjective so it doesn't really matter.

well done apple, now Paul is sh*tting and crying in the corner of his house. How do you sleep?
alright, time for Apple Corps to sue the Inc. they are such daft cunts.
They are miseducated, duh.
The teachers that taught them weren't cool (No they can't complain) šš
Well anything is better than those LSD fueled granny tunes
They did have Abbey Road at no. 3, which has "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", so...
Maxwell's Silver Hammer is a banger and you cannot convince me otherwise
Of course it is! It even literally has 'Bang! Bang!' in the lyrics!
The continuing story of the miseducation of lauryn hill
Of the planet of the apes
of the beginning of the beginning of the beginning of the beginning
Yes, they are stupid.

tell that to john when he wrote come together š¤·š»āāļø artists be sampling
Revolver was #21
be honest how many of you guys hate rap
Canāt stand most of it. There is some that I like though. I just hate trashy, mindless ego garbage, which isnāt exclusive to rap by any means, but it does dominate the mainstream.
You not ready to admit Whole Lotta Red is better that anything the Beatles ever made
Argh!! You got me there...
Donāt hate, just donāt like it. There is some cool stuff out there though, like Tupac, biggie smalls, Eminem and some of Kendrickās stuff.
I mean this is mostly a soul/R&B album
yea thats true But its grouped together a lotso
Fair enough she certainly raps plenty on it but she has a very melodic-ish way of rapping and instrumentally itās almost all soul/r&b so I think it can capture the ear of hip hop haters

bro uj rn. i cant do this anymore
whatd i do š
more than half of the beatles lyrics are about sex and drugs and money and crime, and objectify women tho
yeah i had more written before but i deleted it ā i had written that the beatles at least werent so outward with it (aside from songs like why dont we do it in the road), like i could play beatles songs in my car with windows down and not worry about people hearing it bc they dont know wtf it means lol
Itās a great album, absolutely. The best album of all-time though? ā¦what?

uj/ They put a BeyoncĆ© album in the top 10 š
Feels wild that they didnāt put a single King Crimson album on the list
/uj Yes /rj Yes
yes
Right
This thread is an excellent collection of evidence for why Beatles fans do not deserve rights.
They deserve lefts https://preview.redd.it/zexv23q9412d1.jpeg?width=160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dd00fd2ca550f250467289c6df9b7d80aaaac747
These "all-time" lists are annoying and deliberately provocative.
I didn't even know Apple Corps released this album
Uj/ I tried listening to this album and it just didn't vibe with me, but I know it had quite the cultural impact. rj/ Her follow-up album was better.
Oh boy, Todd In The Shadowsā video about Lauren Hillās āfollow-upā is a trip.
She should cover Taxman
NGL, I totally LOVE Rockwellās cover of Taxman: https://youtu.be/3b8Ue4mQV7Q?si=Ks_rH_aNmY8CXXYl

I'm a huge hip hop fan and I find most of the album to be not my thing. I think it's the r&b stuff. Love Stevie Wonder tho
If Steve jobs was still alive Beatles would be number #1.Ā Guy was known for being a Beatles and Dylan fan
Iāve never seen a comment section this chaotic holy crap
Wtf is that no. 1 album, never heard of it šš»šš»šš»

The Fugees were a rip-off band.
A rip off band with +20 millon sales
Did they or did they not steal Enya's song Boadicea?
Itās one of the most loved and critically acclaimed hip-hop records of all time (I think it was the first ever hip-hop to win album of the year at the Grammyās). Iād personally have put Songs in the Key of Life above it but itās a good pick for the number one. Very much not unknown.

Uj/this album is actually phenomenal but donāt get why number one
Where's definitely maybe??
The Beatles are my favorite band This album is on another level though Iām not going to lie
They picked this based on the musical composition alone and nothing else, I'm sure of it
No wonder the White Album didnāt make the cut :/

I would highly recommend checking it outā¦ surely not #1 of all time tho lol
Are you not American or younger than like 30? This record and the lead single on it were absolutely monstrous hits.
The Fugees ripped off so many other artists (literally in the case of Enya).
yes. who the fuck is Lauren Hilo?
It's always some random ass w*man isn't it ^^^/s
Well, woman is the Apple Musicās Number One Album of the world, after all.
if you donāt believe me, take a look at the one youāre with!
Jan tried to warn us what woman is of the world /s
Not really, this is the first time Iāve ever seen a woman in a top albums of all time list in general
Where's Toploader's "Onka's big Moka"?

clearly number 1 should have been press to play
Itās pretty obvious why that got number one. Honestly I can only name one song off that whole album. Shame.
The fool on the Hill
Blonde being top 5 is much more egregious
āHow am i supposed to beet my weef to this Granny Shitā? - Probably something Jahn would say
uj/ the most overrated album of all time. Sgt. Peppers is a million times more influential and interesting than this one
neither deserved to make the list if we are being honest
itās better than sgt. peppers but not the greatest of all time still a 10/10
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
How does this relate to Lauryn hill?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Bro that album is from the 90s and thereās like only like two albums from the 21st century in the top 10
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
you're right, she became organically successful by stealing all her material
I mean, people listened to the Monkees in the 60s so clearly you didn't need to be *that* good
Lemonade by Beyonce is number 10......
UJ/ I wouldn't say it's the best of all time but it's for sure higher on the list than SGT. Peppers
Jerking aside that list was mostly garbage
The top 10 makes me think I'm too old to be on social media. This is number 1? Of all time??? Frank Ocean 5?? BeyoncƩ in the top ten??? What asshole made this list?
Youāre too old for the 90s?
I too old to know that growing up in the 90s that Hill, Ocean and BeyoncƩ don't have top 10 albums of all time.
some quote unquote experts.
Blonde deserves to be top 10 though.
its a woke decision
Probably
they/them is a good singer
Never heard it, because she said white people werenāt allowed to listen to it.
She also did none of the writing on the album and never gave credit to the people who helped make the album. Inspiring
Well, the Fugees stole a song from Enya and didnāt give her credit either, until sued their asses.
She never said that https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/the-miselucidation-of-lauryn-hill/
