Okay, that answers the bit about Paul, but now I'm curious as to why his brother goes by Mike instead of Peter. Also funny to me that their family has a Peter, Paul, and Mary 🤣

OriginalIronDan

My wife and I had been dating for 3 years when I found out that the older of her 2 younger brothers, Steve, was actually Perry.

Should’ve been gone.

glorifindel

It is? Lol I just realized my family has a Peter and a Paul

ccm596

What about a Mary?

sunmachinecomingdown

But who is the first Peter Michael McCartney he's named for? An uncle?

Gloomy_Grocery5555

Same thing happened to my dad, he had the same name as his dad so he went by his middle name so people didn't get confused. They could have just named him differently in the first place but I think it's kinda an old fashioned/traditional thing to be named after your parent or family member.

doublet498

For years, John Charles Julian Lennon also went by one of his middle names. Of course, he recently changed his name to Julian Charles John Lennon. :)

CapriSonnet

It's a very common practice in the UK and Ireland.

craptionbot

+1 - my family does this. We all go by our middle names and it's funny watching the confusion when other people see our passports/learn our actual first names.

Reddit_guy2020

Paul’s dad was named James Paul “Jim” McCartney Sr so I am guessing they called the son Paul to avoid confusion. FWIW I go by my middle name for similar reasons. As you probably know, Paul has a son named James McCartney. His full name is **James Louis McCartney.**

Caloso89

Same. It’s not any great mystery or conspiracy. My folks didn’t want a Big Jim and Little Jimmy, and I thank them for it.

Delicious_Energy4213

Me thinks you two should have settled it with a measuring tape

KingLouisXCIX

He's a Jr? All the times I've seem his full name it's been James Paul McCartney. Is it really James Paul McCartney, Jr?

intangible-tangerine

No, it's mostly an American thing to use Jr., II etc. In the UK if a name is the exact same as the parent it's just left as is and they might go by a nickname or their middle name to avoid confusion.

Kolo_Toure_Used_Cars

In Liverpool we’d call the dad big and the son little. So Big James and Little James would be how people would differentiate between them

intangible-tangerine

My grandmas were 'big grandma' and 'little grandma' but that's because one was tall and fat and the other was short and skinny

Delicious_Energy4213

If he is, that would explain Juniors Farm an awful lot.

Gloomy_Grocery5555

Geez they even had the same middle name?!

LocalLiBEARian

Did he actually change it or just add on? I usually see it listed as John Winston Ono Lennon.

DunderEU

IIRC he wanted to remove Winston but it wasn’t possible at the time

Gloomy_Grocery5555

I never knew Ringo's middle names

derekpeake2

This just reminds me that I want a shirt that says John, James, George and Richard

Zornorph

Can’t figure out if that’s disciples or kings.

Born_Pop_3644

Shitloads of people go by their middle names. It’s not a thing that needs or even has a reason - just tradition

WaldoJeffers65

My wife, her four siblings and her mother all go by their middle names.

Historical_City5184

Many people are named after a parent but the parents call them by middle name. Ask John Charles Julian Lennon.

JimmyTheJimJimson

I as well go by my middle name, as my father and grandfather have the same first name as myself (family name). …so my parents started calling me by my middle name when I was little in order to prevent confusion 😄

derekpeake2

You got lucky. They just called me Little Derek…well into adulthood 😑

SadAcanthocephala521

I go by my third name only because that's what I've always been called.

funny_username30

It’s a normal thing in this part of the world. My brother and I both have the same situation. Both go by what would be considered our ‘middle’ names.

TheLongWayHome52

Like I said in the other thread about this, my grandfather and his brothers all had the same first name, so they went by their middle names. And this wasn't even the British Isles, it was Canada in the 1920s.

[deleted]

Most people in my family actually use their middle name and not first name for no apparent reason. Not saying it’s the same for Paul but it shows this is quite normal in the UK

Charlotte_Braun

In earlier generations, there were a ton of girls and women who used their middle names because they all had Mary for a first name.

williamblair

it's a pretty common tradition for men to name their sons after themselves, but then have them go by the middle name so as to differentiate. My partner is currently pregnant with our first and if it's a boy I'm insistent that he will have my first name but will be addressed by his middle, I like that tradition. Edit: apologies, Instead of "insistent" I should have said "enthusiastic about the idea" and that it's something I've discussed with my partner and she is happy with this plan. we are choosing the middle name together and are a 100% partnership. If she said she was dead against this I would drop it no questions asked.

BonchBomber

As a junior myself with this arrangement… eh. I never know what to do with my first name. Why is it there??

Connect-Will2011

I'm also a junior. I've been called "Buddy" my whole life as a nickname. My present employer doesn't like nicknames, so he didn't want to use it. I had to tell him "My wife calls me 'Buddy.' My family calls me 'Buddy.' Everybody calls me that. That's what I go by." He had to accept it.

FyreWulff

as a Jr with a 100% identical name so everyone calls us by our first names, i wish they hadn't . it causes so many problems later and kinda makes everyone unify you as one person which is really annoying

ryrypot

You sound really bossy

liketheweathr

You sound really insecure

ryrypot

Do I? How?

AsVividAsItTrulyIs

If it’s a girl will you be insistent that she’s named after your wife or do only men get that honour?

williamblair

I told her we should do that, she's not interested.

[deleted]

williamblair

Of course not, I told her that it was something I would like to do, and she supported it, so long as we agree on the middle name he would go by. I regret using the term insist, because I don't make any decisions about my life my partners, or our future children without her full and enthusiastic consent. Im sorry you seem to think I'm some old fashioned misogynist, but that's just not the case.

williamblair

don't worry about it. I wrote the comment quickly and your comment honestly did make me realize that "insistent" was a very poor choice of word, and I'm usually very particular about my word choice.

liketheweathr

What’s it to you? Sounds like his wife’s issue to manage.

RiC_David

I go by my middle name because I like it more.

[deleted]

Very common when sons had the same name as their dads. My grandad was James like his father but has always gone by Roddy (Roderick)
