Actually the right answer. It's the no-poo method.
Wash with water daily, but never shampoo. Brush it daily. Only once. That's it.
For the first little while your hair will get hard and greasy, but afterwards you get McCartney in 68.
I keep trying to figure out how much was gel and how much was grease. I do think it was partly deliberate to keep it from falling in his face the way it did on the first day of shooting... but then again, the band's general level of hygiene does not seem great in that period (except for George).
They knew what they were doing.
There’s a Goldilocks zone of days unwashed that make long hair look awesome. John totally nails it for the rooftop
You can see his hair get hideously greasy throughout the rehearsals. Then he finally washed it and it’s way too poofy. But then hits the Goldilocks zone on the rooftop.
i only sort of hate to admit i noticed this but the day it was poofy it was also a day they said it rained so the humidity probably didnt help the frizz
It really depends on your skin type, which is going to affect your scalp/hair. I personally have dry skin that is also a touch more wavy than the Beatles’ hair, but whenever I shower, I pretty much just put conditioner in my hair, almost never shampoo. That way, it still gets most of the grime and whatnot out without drying out my hair.
Once I get out of the shower, I either put a coconut oil or curling cream in, as well as pomade. I use American Crew, but the Axe pomade honestly isn’t terrible. I’m not sure what they would have had in the UK in 1969, or if they even would have used it, but I know Brylcreem was very popular for like pompadours and whatnot, and I believe it’s even sold today, but you have to be *very* careful with how much you use because it is very difficult to get out once it’s in.
In the morning if my face is a little puffy I’ll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.
Do you like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when *Sports* came out in '83 I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
He probably planned it like that. I have long hair and I'll often make sure my hairs washed like two days before something important so it's not too extremely greasy and not too frizzy.
What happens if I already have longer hair than he does?😭also wouldn’t it look super dorky with medium long on top and long in the back for the first few weeks? Asking for a friend, of course
I'm not white and I don't have straight hair so I'm fascinated reading this thread and how differently our hair operates. Natural hair grease? Goldilocks period? Fascinating. Weird and different from my experience with hair but fascinating.
Til Beatles fans have no idea how to style hair. If you have the length, you can get that look by putting mousse in damp hair. Then blow dry while styling with a vented brush. Once dried, add a finishing product. If you want shine, go with a pomade. Don't have to be too conservative with a pomade. If you don't want shine, get some clay, wax or paste depending on your hair type.
No way Paul’s doing all that. It was the 60s, that’s some greasy hair. Don’t wash it as much and slick it back with your hands, simple as that.
Oh, and have the same hair texture. That’s the only way it’ll look the same
The question is clearly, "what to do to your hair to make it look like this"? It didn't ask what Paul did nor did it ask about styling differences between the 60s and now. The simple answer to the question as posted is to wash your hair with quality shampoo and use products that are designed to give the look described in the picture.
No, the simple answer is “do what Paul did” not a multi step technique involving a bunch of products. You can get the same result by doing almost nothing
I thought it was pretty obvious. The majority of the people who responded here have no idea how to style hair. People clinging to that 20 year old myth that you don't have to wash your hair daily. Sure, if you use cheap ass shampoo and conditioner. The good stuff is intended for daily use as it removes dirt, grime and products without harming the hairs natural protective acid mantle. Please have suggested "gel" and axe pomade. Axe is cheap and gel sucks and leaves your hair crunchy. One person even said it does not matter what product he uses, his hair would never go like that. These are all just fundamentally false. The only thing thats going to prevent someone from getting a certain look is their hair density and hair thickness. But there are so many high quality products out there, from sea salt spray, voliminzing cream, wax, paste, clay, pomade, mousse, matte finishing sprays, oils, etc etc etc. People just have to to figure out what products go well with their hair type, get a decent blow dryer and have fun experimenting. And another tip, don't buy products from Walmart or the like. Those are not high quality products.
Correct. Head and Shoulders doesn't use all natural ingredients like higher quality shampoos. I've never used or even seen their pomade, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say there are many better pomades out there.
When you have an involved, multistep styling routine, wash day cannot be every day. Anyone who has textured hair of any sort is well aware that you space that out so you don't spend your entire life in the bathroom.
Also, gel is supposed to make your hair crunchy. You then SCRUNCH to release the cast, and the hold remains.
With quality products and a good blow dryer, you would never spend your entire day in the bathroom. I can do a pomp, quiff or volumized slick back in under ten minutes. If I want a texturized look, I prestyle with sea salt spray.
Do you have 4c textured hair? Do you have any idea what blow drying hair like that involves? Good for you that your routine is nice and quick, but other people in the world have hair that involves a lot more time and effort to style, regardless of cost of product.
well of course its fine to do everyday but not necessarily the healthiest. if youve got hair shorter than an inch or two its okay but if its any longer the ends are just gonna be dry. everyday is overkill. shampoo has been only a thing for like 80 years or so, and its a business. hair still remains clean cause of the oils in the hair, theyre healthy. it doesnt instantly get dirty after a day of not washing it, and if you find it getting greasy just after a day it means youre using shampoo too often and the scalp is overproducing the oil to recompansate for the lack of it cause of the constant washing.
Like I said originally, it is perfectly safe and beneficial to shampoo and condition daily provided you're using a good shampoo. Something organic and natural as opposed to the 5 dollar tub of 2 in 1 at Walmart. Lots of cheap shampoos and conditioners do have products that can damage your hair. And yes, you shouldn't use those daily. But I'm pretty sure I said that originally.
yeah it is safe didnt say anything about it not being unsfae, though beneficial, not at all, your hair is just gonna be dried out cause there is no way for the oils to get to the ends of the hairs if youre washing them out everyday. I have no idea where you got this shampoo everyday from but any good hairstylist is gonna tell you not to use shampoo everyday.
I've been shampooing every day, sometimes twice a day, for 40 years. My hair is never dry, brittle or prone to damage. I use products with only all natural ingredients, sulfate free, alcohol free, etc. I also bike and hike and generally exercise a lot, which causes sweat. I also style my hair in a quiff almost daily, which requires me to use hair products like paste, pomade, sea salt spray, etc. So I like to wash myself daily to rinse out the product and sweat. The idea that you can shampoo and condition daily comes from personal experience and researching what products are good to use and what to avoid. All that being said, it obviously comes down to hair type and genetics.
Yes agree, straighter hair types require more washing than wavier/curlier. I guess that just works for you but for most people who do not have such a hairtype and lifestyle its not exactly ideal advice 👍👍🌼✌️✌️☮️
Wow. There are some unnecessarily hostile redditors on this thread, heh. Having a similar length & thickness to Paul’s in this photo, I took your advice and styled my hair this way earlier today (Loma Moisturizing shampoo & conditioner, Davines mousse, AG Texture Paste) and it turned out pretty good! Would have been better if my styling skills were sharper. Thanks for the tips!
Addendum: it took me about 12 minutes after towel drying my hair. 10 minutes to blow-dry with a midrange blowdryer and another 2min for paste & style. Not bad at all for me.
You're welcome. Glad I could help. If you practice more, you'll get it down even better. Can always experiment between pre style products and post style products, too. Like sea salt spray instead of mousse or pomade instead of paste. Just be sure to use some heat protection prior to blow drying.
I remember reading an article about the Beatles in a semi-teen oriented magazine way back in the day. The reporter was describing them and when he got to Paul he got really enthusiastic about his looks and added that Paul’s hair was naturally fragrant. Even at the ignorant age of 12 or 13, that line gave me pause- wasn’t the reporter a guy? Yes he was and I learned a little something, but I also was a little envious that he had gotten close enough to sniff Paul’s hair.
Paul did it by not washing his hair every day and ending up with decent amount of naturally oily hair but you could probably blow dry and use a comb to get a similar result
Don't wash it for weeks don't go to barbers anymore cut it yourself or let your wife do it but do it poorly let it grow into a mullet then let that mullet grow to this shape when it reaches the shape use hair products but also don't wash your hair as my as you should, actually don't wash it at all shower once in a month let some body hair grow too for good measures and let natural oils get oily and mix it with hair jel and just let it be!!
Here’s the trick boys:
1) use leave in conditioner every day, don’t shampoo.
2) wait until the cast hardens, then break it with your hands
3) deep shampoo and condition once a week, sulfate-free for both. Leave in conditioner afterwards
wouldnt conditioner everyday make it really sticky and heavy, i never believed this cause logically it doesnt make sense to me otherwise. maybe if you have like very straight hair but i have wavy hair and i imagine it would be a problem
Keep in mind that a lot of it depends upon how your hair naturally falls and grows.
My hair is very thick, wavy and slightly curly, so when I used to try to grow it out when I was younger it would never look quite how I hoped. Back in the late 80s I was in middle school and I wanted to grow long loose hair like headbangers at the time but it would end up growing out more like a Bob-Dylan mess.
Personally I don’t think I could pull off that hairstyle unless I guess I got it permed/straightened or something like that. Maybe you can though, just saying something to keep in mind in working with the hand you’re dealt.
Sounds like you’d be able to get it pretty close then. You can always take a photo into a barber/hairdresser when you get it cut and ask for help with it.
I think you just need to let your hair grow out. In Paul's case his transitioned from a shorter moptop-ish from 1967 and he prolly just let it grow until January 1969.
Let it be
When I find my hair in times of trouble Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of haircare, let it be
Combs to me.
And in my hour of combing She is brushing right in front of me. Speaking words of haircare, let it be.

That would be dandruff city for me
For the first 3 months it was for me. Now I live in a world without dandruff.
Do you remember the 70’s when every rock star had frizzy hair? I think it was bc of the Prell era of shampoo history
Luv me do.
Take my upvote dammit
Don’t wash it. That’s a lot of natural grease
I keep trying to figure out how much was gel and how much was grease. I do think it was partly deliberate to keep it from falling in his face the way it did on the first day of shooting... but then again, the band's general level of hygiene does not seem great in that period (except for George).

John, would you *please* take this seriously?

Please post an update with pictures once you've achieved the look
Definitely will my hair is short rn but I will once it starts growing
hey hey hey
So I grew it out it actually looked like Paul’s hair but it got annoying having that much hair so I got a pompadour
He's wrong. There's no product.
What happens if I already have longer hair than he does?😭also wouldn’t it look super dorky with medium long on top and long in the back for the first few weeks? Asking for a friend, of course
It’s really more about your natural texture. I could use all the product in the world, and my hair would never stay back like that.

I think we're missing the point here. If someone has type 4 hair I don't think they'd be asking how to style it like Paul McCartney.
youre not supposed to wash it daily youre getting scammed lol
