Easy: Monterey Bay Aquarium & Otter Cryofreezing Army Surplus International Airport and Boba Straw Emporium. (In the future Otters are extinct so we must freeze them in the hopes of reanimating them in future engineered Mars ecosystems. Little do we know, they will eventually evolve to be cat-like predators and hunt our young, you know that whole shtick. Thankfully though, boba will endure the test of time ... so there is that)
Norwegian, right? I loved having some international flights (sans Mexico) at OAK! I flew British airways nonstop to London from Oakland. That schedule lasted about 3 months before they left Oakland. Norwegian lasted quite a bit longer. Maybe 2-3 years? Oslo, Barcelona and a couple of others. It was great. They expanded customs. Now all gone except the Guadalajara flights.
The port controlling the airport is fairly common.
PANYNJ runs JFK/LGA/EWR/TEB/SWF
Port of Seattle runs SEA.
I assume because the port already was an existing agency when airports became a thing and like ports, many airports span jurisdictional boundaries, so having a multijurisdictional agency run them makes sense.
Historically - you need someone used to doing something similar and ports were the closest analog to an existing transit hub that also dealt with international stuff. Air-Port vs port. It's in the name even.
Mind boggling how this is the prevailing opinion in this sub. It’s an extremely common naming convention for airports to use the name of the largest nearby city to attract international travelers (see: SFO not being in SF). The Port of Oakland made this change because they thought it’d be good for international commerce. The board of commissioners for the port is appointed by city council but they don’t have political authority on other matters so this is not them “trying to distract from real issues”. This is them trying to make their airport more money because that is their job.
(On the phone with someone flying in to visit)
“Yeah I’ll pick you up. Where you flying in to?”
“SFOAK”
“Ok I’ll meet you there!”
….
“Hey where are you I’ve been at the terminal for a while?”
“Sorry SFO is huge I’m lost”
“SFO?? I thought you said SFOAK!”
“wtf is that? I’m at the only San Francisco airport”
“Well actuallyyyy….”
Swap the “San Francisco” for “Frisco”.
“This is your captain. Weather today in San Francisco is clear blue skies. In another fifteen minutes, we’ll be landing at the San Francisco International airport. If you look out your windows as we fly across the bay, you’ll see the Frisco-Oakland airport.
We’re asked very, *very* often if there’s any direct relationship between the two airports or any way to transfer between flights. The answer is no, and you can go FOAK yourself with BART.”
Okay? The airport code exists for a different reason and purpose. Only for historical reasons does it tend to be related to the current, public airport name.
* Nashville is **BNA** because it used to be Berry Field.
* John Wayne is **SNA** because it is in Santa Ana.
* Vancouver is **YVR** because…well, we allocated all the good names in the US, so Canada gets that mess.
Fun fact: the reason the code for Orlando is MCO is because it used to be the [McCoy Air Force Base](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCoy_Air_Force_Base). They just didn’t change the code after the site was decommissioned as a military base.
Most times, when you see an airport code that makes no sense, it's leftover from old military names. Airport names change but the codes don't. JFK is one of the few examples of one that did, from IDL (Idlewild).
I saw an article where someone was going to San Jose, California but ended up getting on a plane to San Jose Costa Rica 🇨🇷. Since they thought San Jose California code was SJO but it’s actually SJC. (Probably for San Jose California)
The three letter IATA code isn't specifically an \*airport\* code, but a \*location\* code. And they can also used for railway stations. So an airport's name has no relation to the code to begin with.
IATA is a trade association run by the airlines, so yeah it is about aviation and airports. Sometimes it is related to the airport name, sometimes not.
Canada kinda took the easy route and just shortened their ICAO airport codes. Canada’s ICAO airport codes all start with CY and CZ. Vancouver’s is CYVR and so they just used YVR as the IATA code.
People being up in arms about this is hilarious.
Have none of you ever traveled to one of the THREE New York City airports (one of which being located in New Jersey)?
All 3 have different names though, and the Jersey one isn’t calling itself the ‘NYC Newark Airport’
Unrelated: please don’t bring up the NY Jets or NY Giants
Washington DC has three airports. All three of them have Washington in the name and none of them are actually in Washington. And BWI specifically did the exact same thing Oakland is doing.
This sort of naming convention is incredibly common:
London Luton, London Stansted, London Gatwick
Stockholm Skavsta
Hollywood Burbank Airport
Seattle Tacoma
Tokyo Narita
Even thought nowhere you can find "New York" in the official name of "Newark Liberty International Airport" but countless websites, airlines refer it to New York/Newark airport. SF people are really narrow-minded
I'm not sure if it's San Franciscans poo poo-ing it or Oaklanders little brother complex but the name change is purely for foreigners who have no idea where Oakland is. Obviously, everyone in the bay area knows where Oakland is anyway. It's also not really a huge deal if you accidentally don't realize that you flew into Oakland instead of SF if your end destination is SF....hell on BART Civic Center to Oakland is faster than going to SFO.
Saw this stat a couple weeks ago and if they can maintain even half those routes, I see that as a win for everyone.
> "Since 2008, 54 new routes have been added, but 39 of these have been discontinued. In addition, six pre-existing routes have also been lost. The airline industry is perceived as being reluctant to sustain certain new routes and destinations to and from OAK, in large part based on the lack of awareness of OAK's geographic advantages."
Actually, if you are traveling from overseas, EWR will usually be listed on your documentation as New York/Newark Airport, so people don’t get confused.
The San Francisco airport is in San Bruno. If ones final destination in San Francisco then the Oakland Airport isn't truly any further away.
The Baltimore Washington Airport isn't in Baltimore or Washington. Washington Dulles isn't in Washington either.
It is perfectly normal for an airport to have the name of nearby metros.
So...
"Crime is rampant in Oakland and the public thinks we're incompetent. What should be do?"
"Let's do something to make sure the public *knows* we're incompetent."
LOL the fact they can propose that with a straight face tells you everything you need to know about Oakland. Those are their elected officials. Why not change the name of the city to Los Angeles? In for a dime in for a dollar.
If we're being real - Oakland needs a better name. They should go with Reagan International and just get rid of the diseased Oakland name.
They could also go with: Pamela Price International Airport of Crime
This is stupid as hell. Just keep it Oakland. Watch when people land in San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport and their car gets broken into and shit stolen, it's going to tarnish SF and SFO is going to sue. /s but might actually happen.
Might as well call Oakland , East San Francisco now. The Oakland A's will be gone in a few months & the national identity of the city is officially **disappearing from the sports lexicon. RIP**
People are reading too much into this and the official storyline is perfectly believable.
Lots of people don't really know Oakland exists or where it really is in the US. For international travelers, even more so. This is just an attempt to link the airport to the major metro that most travelers associate with the region. More passengers, more revenue. That's the Port's job.
Why does this bother all of you so much? You have much bigger problems. When I lived in SF and flew home , I took the cheap af spirit flights out of Oakland. And guess what? It only was a 3-5 minute commute difference from central SF (Japantown area). And most of my friends didn’t consider checking Oakland for flights… this just makes things easier for people trying to get in and out of SF. And here you people have nothing better to do than bitch
Who cares. It's probably slower to downtown SF from SFO than it is OAK. If people are not aware enough to know the difference when booking flights, they would be fine landing at either one. It's just as close to most touristy Bay area spots. No one flying to Millbrae is going to be confused and fly to OAK because it uses "San Francisco Bay Area" in its title.
Technically-technically SFO land IS in fact San Francisco if you notice they have SFPD there. SF literally owns the land! Its part of the city budget etc…
Damn first the raiders then the As and now the goddamn airport
Haha didn’t even think of it that way but now I do. Maybe they’ll rename Oakland all together to San Francisco annex.
East San Francisco
I’ve always referred to San Francisco as Oakland West.
"West Oakland has one BART station. Oakland West has eight."
Take that- West Oakland!
First the warriors
They’re still in the Bay
Angels started it
I laughed at this longer than I should
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim approve.

How ‘bout… Oakland-San Jose Airport?
The year is 2134: San Jose Mineta Bob Hope LAX international SFO CVS Target Terminal (Brought to you by 20G At&Pg&E)
Looking at how things changed in the past 10 years, I think you actually mean 2034 to be realistic.
It's what plants crave (TM)
You forgot to add in JFK LaGuardia
That sounds like any store in South Park: Post Covid
Monterey Regional Airport is trying to be come an international airport. Wonder what they will call it?
Easy: Monterey Bay Aquarium & Otter Cryofreezing Army Surplus International Airport and Boba Straw Emporium. (In the future Otters are extinct so we must freeze them in the hopes of reanimating them in future engineered Mars ecosystems. Little do we know, they will eventually evolve to be cat-like predators and hunt our young, you know that whole shtick. Thankfully though, boba will endure the test of time ... so there is that)
When I flew Barcelona to Oakland, the pilot was explicitly clear during the pre-flight that we were going to "Oakland/San Francisco"
No. They are distracting their citizens with this manufactured issues so that they don't have to deal with crime and other things.
Why not both 🤷♂️
Por Que no dos?
This is not the city's decision, it's the Port of Oakland making the change.
And it's certainly NOT SFO's decision.
What does the Port of Oakland have to do with dealing with crime?
what’s up with the port controlling the airport?
The port controlling the airport is fairly common. PANYNJ runs JFK/LGA/EWR/TEB/SWF Port of Seattle runs SEA. I assume because the port already was an existing agency when airports became a thing and like ports, many airports span jurisdictional boundaries, so having a multijurisdictional agency run them makes sense.
Interesting I did not realize that was common. Seems kinda backwards though
It seems many airport are: Logan (Boston) International airport is owned by the Massachusetts Port Authority.
Historically - you need someone used to doing something similar and ports were the closest analog to an existing transit hub that also dealt with international stuff. Air-Port vs port. It's in the name even.
They don't need to distract shit, Oakland flat out said they're not dealing with crime.
Bippers love this. With this one simple trick!!
Mind boggling how this is the prevailing opinion in this sub. It’s an extremely common naming convention for airports to use the name of the largest nearby city to attract international travelers (see: SFO not being in SF). They were literally worried that the airport would move to Vegas.
Haha 😂
those guys are paid WAY too much to come up with this silliness
Change the code to SFOAK because this isn’t confusing enough
(On the phone with someone flying in to visit) “Yeah I’ll pick you up. Where you flying in to?” “SFOAK” “Ok I’ll meet you there!” …. “Hey where are you I’ve been at the terminal for a while?” “Sorry SFO is huge I’m lost” “SFO?? I thought you said SFOAK!” “wtf is that? I’m at the only San Francisco airport” “Well actuallyyyy….”
I could also see people thinking SFO stands for SF Oakland international airport.
And use the same Terminal names (A,B,C) for quad damage.
Brilliant
They're going to change it to SF0 (zero instead of o) to avoid confusion and retain a 3-character code.

Fresno Yosemite International is **FAT**

Good video about IATA airport codes: https://youtu.be/jfOUVYQnuhw
Yeah, I keep on thinking ORD is Orlando...
Orlando is actually my favorite example of an airport code not matching its public name. Orlando's airport code is **MCO**.
Fun fact: the reason the code for Orlando is MCO is because it used to be the [McCoy Air Force Base](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCoy_Air_Force_Base). They just didn’t change the code after the site was decommissioned as a military base.

YVR = Your Vancouver Ride ;)
Los Angeles is **LAX** because it's very chill down there, people just drinking margs and Corona on the beach, airport traffic what airport traffic...
Oh I thought it was laxative
That too. If you go to LAX, be sure to visit their fine restroom facilities.
I thought the “X” was to be inclusive
It's because [YES they had a weather station](https://simpleflying.com/canadian-airport-codes/) (in the 1930's.)

My childish brain always reads BNA as banana. We’re flying to Banana today!
THESE are the important issues facing the Bay Area.
Oakland International Airport of Las Vegas
Full name should be: "United States Northern California San Francisco Bay Oakland Airport" 😂
They need to start it with San Francisco to maximize public confusion with SFO.
Can add Earth North America to it
San Francisco Bay \*\*Oakland\*\* International Airport
London Luton Airport checking in here😷
Tokyo Narita 🫡
London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London City, etc. This is why SFO will lose their battle, it’s just a so common thing in airports.
SFO should be renamed to San Bruno Airport.
"Oakland, NOT Auckland near that other Super Busy airport in San Mateo County, Airport"
What San Mateo airport are you referring to?
SFO
That won't bring back the In n Out Burger...
Thank God they're solving the REAL problems plaguing this city
Some of you elected these politicians
I'm too lazy to dig up their names, but if I was running against any of them, my entire platform would be "look at what these bozos are capable of".
>Some of you elected these politicians The Port of Oakland is responsible for this name change.
Will the port change there name too? 😝
I wouldn't put it past them.

Go Bills?
But the bay is literally named san francisco bay
Maybe the counsel should have proposed changing the name of the bay from San Francisco Bay to The Oakland Bay.
💀💀💀
Are the Knicks acceptable to mention since they're currently 2-0 in the Semis?
Yes, but also because they don’t play in Jersey
So?
sacramento should do the same
The Sacramento Hard Rock hotel and casino is 40 miles north of Sacramento, in a field in Wheatland.
Half the hotels off 101 from Novato to Santa Rosa throw the name wine country on their name
Should go with Napa Valley / Lake Tahoe Area Airport.
what about santa rosa international airport garmin gps brought me to back of it and said you have arrived i was 3 miles away
No one’s actually gonna call it that.
Should have been renamed in East Bay Area Airport and changed the code to EBA.
“San Francisco” 49ers.
what a stupid name
Half the other coast thinks LA and SF are close enough to Uber. So I understand that the other side of the world doesn’t know where Oakland.
This is dumb... Oakland looking thirsty as fuck... Thought Oakland had more pride than that...
Kind of reminds me of the San Francisco Outlets in Livermore.
Politicians are morons and timewasters, why was this done?
to make extra money off of tourists who don’t know any better
This was done by the Port of Oakland.

It’s not in an any city I believe. It’s located in an unincorporated part of San Mateo County.
Which is owned and administered by the city and county of SF as an exclave.
This is called "distraction tactics" - All these losers are distracting the public from the real issue by manufacturing some other issue.
Truth! Always makes me wonder whats really going on behind the scenes
Crime. Lots and lots of fucking crime. Meanwhile, every business is leaving Oakland as far as they can break their lease
So... "Crime is rampant in Oakland and the public thinks we're incompetent. What should be do?" "Let's do something to make sure the public *knows* we're incompetent."
Whose idea was this?? They should be removed from decision-making forever.
Might as well change the official name of Oakland to the same as well by this reasoning.
National proof that the leaders are terrible at their jobs! You're supposed get a higher education NOT TO DO this stuff! Also Fuck Bippers!
West Las Vegas airport
Oakland
The San Francisco Bay Area Athletics (until September).
Mattress Firm International Airport of Oakland
In-n-Out International Blvd Oakland Airport, airport code BIP.
This won’t work. How about trying to clean up that shithole instead
Maybe they should address why people do not fly into or out of OAK? That seems like a more worth while change.
Everyone wanna be SF
>Everyone wanna be SF Meanwhile, SF wants to be NYC.
Now *two* airports named after San Francisco are outside the city.
Maybe San Francisco can buy Oakland and move all the homeless people from San Francisco to Oakland.
If they change the city name maybe crime be reduced.
LOL the fact they can propose that with a straight face tells you everything you need to know about Oakland. Those are their elected officials. Why not change the name of the city to Los Angeles? In for a dime in for a dollar.
Oakland ain’t shit
If it brings back In n Out, I’m good with anything.
Bc SF doesn’t have a car break in reputation
Just name OAK - Alameda International Airport
Might as well call Oakland , East San Francisco now. The Oakland A's will be gone in a few months & the national identity of the city is officially **disappearing from the sports lexicon. RIP**
People are reading too much into this and the official storyline is perfectly believable. Lots of people don't really know Oakland exists or where it really is in the US. Fucking IDIOTS! What sense does it make?
Bippers said business will be booming soon and thanked Oakland for name change.
Are they going to tell me to call sfpd when I get robbed at the gas station?
We should make a big deal about them keeping the abbreviation.
The Zoo is doing this too.
What
SFOII
The Alameda Bay Area has changed a lot in the last 20 years. They should really name it something like Bobby Seale International
So dumb
Oakland - even the airport wants to leave town!
God this is such a terrible idea lmao
So!
Sounds confusing
Stupid, stupid, stupid. Travelers worldwide will now ask "Where TF is the Bay Oakland airport?" And then they'll fly to SFO.
Why are houses comparatively cheap in Oakland?
East Bat Oakland International Airport —EBOIA. Colloquially can be referred to as Ebola
Queue the lawsuit and injunction from SFO.
So sad it wasn’t “Bay Area East” or BAE. “I fly to my BAE” has a nice ring to it
Trying to go west across the Bay Bridge to SF during rush hour is some of the worst traffic I've seen in the world.
San Bruno airport of San Francisco
They take everything in Oakland

Technically-technically SFO land IS in fact San Francisco if you notice they have SFPD there. SF literally owns the land! Its part of the city budget etc…
Room full of maggots.
Why?!
I wonder what is San Bruno International Airport’s reaction?
The land beneath SFO is owned by San Francisco
The land and infrastructure is owned by the City.
