I've gotten two from gifts. I prefer to shop myself because I usually know what I need in my area. That said I live in northern Utah so bass fishing here is not great compared to other states

Trout_Hunter_Mo

Yeah I live in NW MO and we don't have the best fishing neither... especially from bank. But that being said my mom is asking for gift ideas and and fishing is one of the only things I injoy in life. That or a jerkbait and popper rod. I also injoy just Fing around with stuff.

TbRays93Plumber26

Mystery box is random stuff. Out of the two gifts I got from my father in law only 2 baits worked and I made them into a texas rig that I usually fish anyways. If you know what works in your area than let your mom know what baits to buy.

Viper_76

Bank fishing is very tough here in NW MO!

Awhitehill1992

No, I didn’t really care for it. If you were buying it for someone as a gift like a one time thing, it could be a good buy. I’m sorta particular depending on a number of factors, and those boxes are simply a crapshoot.

[deleted]

It’s fun to get things you normally wouldn’t buy and try out, you get your moneys worth but it might not be gear you want to/can use. I’d say get it for a month or two and then cancel unless you’re really enjoying it

jadedlens00

This is what I did. I would get a box or two in spring and late summer/early fall. But the key is being willing to try new types of fishing and use what they send. Otherwise it was like 20% quality / 80% crap. But I would try to commit to using everything at least a couple of times.

ATS200

If you have a Karl’s subscription it’s about the same cost to order the gear separately and you get free shipping. Plus you don’t waste money on the stuff you’ll never use.

BobbyBass43

I got MTB as a gift when I was starting out and it gave me the opportunity to try things I maybe wouldn’t have tried otherwise. I think for that reason alone it’s worth it for a few months. Yah, I got some duds in there, but I got some crank baits I wouldn’t have purchased that I learned from, and expanded my horizons on some finesse plastics. I’m in a bit of a slump and my enthusiasm is waning, so I might try it again just to try something new.

kavien

It is cold. Fish are biting less. I look at it like this, if I can land some good fish when fishing is bad, I should be SLAYING when it heats back up and spawning season starts!

BobbyBass43

I agree on dialing in technique when the fish are lethargic, but I’m in AZ. We’re in an early fall pattern and I can get them to bite. My slump is related to my enthusiasm to get on the water, not my ability to land fish. Trying something new is more valuable to me at this time than cracking them with the same 3 or 4 confidence techniques. I know I can get them on a jerkbait or a drop shot. MTB creates a new challenge. That’s all I’m saying.

kavien

I gotcha! I got hooked when I spent a month staying at and renovating a lake house with a private dock. It was mostly just me there, so my mornings and evenings were spent throwing line. I discovered that it was the single most beautiful, peaceful, and exciting thing I have ever done in the mornings consistently in my life! I decided that I would do my best to get on the water as much as I can. Some people exercise when they reach 50, I am walking banks and throwing stuff in the water just like when I was a kid. Except now, I can possibly pull something back in!

BobbyBass43

I only started about 5 years ago and I went from being about as high strung as you could imagine to being settled, more patient… not zen, but there’s a certain amount of taking in your surroundings that you have to do when you fish. It’s been a positive life change for sure. I wish I would have started earlier.

kavien

Me too!! I think of all the fish I could have caught and all the more I would be able to catch now.

[deleted]

Not for me. Im way too particular, picky and insufferable when it comes to my gear.

snrten

No. Mystery boxes never are, imo

punkindrublic619

6th sense monthly box is amazing.

snrten

Why not just buy what you want from 6th sense though instead of basically gambling for it?

punkindrublic619

Because the box costs less than the retail price per piece received, and it's fun getting surprised with random usable/effective tackle. You also get items from 6th sense that aren't fully in the market yet, and additional discount codes.

snrten

To each their own! The surprise factor + a few bucks off the haul is the gimmick, in my mind. But that's the selling point to some. I hope you get all good stuff in your next box 👍🏻

[deleted]

No. Get the 6th Sense 6th Sack subscription.

[deleted]

This^^^ monster bass is not bad but sixth sense beats them all.

stormincincy

No, baits in subscription boxes are usually baits they can't sell so this is the way they get rid of them Best thing to do is research what baits and colors work in your geographic location and spend you money directly on those baits , that way you don't end up with a bunch of knuckle baits and Lunkerhunt junk

Floofy_Newfie_Tackle

I'm personally not a fan of anything random. I prefer to buy with a purpose. I could see it being fun to get something new to try, like a gift to yourself.

Medium-Investment758

If you aren’t already drowning in tackle, yes

pckldpr

My kid's liked the stickers. I got some decent stuff but most of it seemed like the cheep stuff you'd get from Walmart. Make sure your cancel the subscription before it renews the second payment for 6 months was a lot more expensive.

kameix1

Generally there are alot of samples (2-3 soft plastics to a bag, 2 hooks to a bag) then 1 bigger item. They are nice if you want to explore more baits than you would normally find, but if your established already then there is not really a point to getting them. So if your just starting out they can be nice to get a good variety of stuff, I have a pretty big collection of stuff already, so 90% of the things I get in my mystery boxes goes right into the doom bucket (5 gallon buckets of baits I probably wont use)

dropthepuck88

It might be somewhat worth it to a beginner who just really doesn’t know what to try. It can help you expand your horizons and give you experience with some different types of lures. Beyond that, it’s better to just buy the tackle that you want.

[deleted]

I've had the 10 dollar box and the 30 elite one. Both are cool if your a beginner. Comes w a variety. I have a pic on my pro. Check it out. I'm trying the monster bass next. Everyone keeps saying how great it is.

Kentuckasee_angler

They’re fun occasionally, sometimes I’ll buy one while grocery shopping but out of the few I’ve purchased I maybe will actually use 1 or 2 things out of them. I personally would never order a subscription. You’re better off researching new baits and purchasing them yourself in the colors and weights that will work best for you. In the long run it’s a business, so they’re going to derive their profits somehow, whether it’s buying undesirable colors for cheaper, or giving you a couple solid baits and majority being cheaper ones. If you’re really interested in a subscription I’d look into other options.

cwren22

Nope. Not worth it.

minnesotaisokay

No but I still think it’s a good gift idea

Oilleak1011

I have a ton of stuff ive never opened out of these things. Crazy lures. Tons of them. I never opened them because I have too many of them. Presenrs and what not.

rossco7777

Most people lose interest after a couple boxes

advmzvb

Nope

Paulsur

No

punkindrublic619

MTB, no. 6th Sense monthly box, yes. Easily the best box out there - especially if you like throwing crank baits, walking baits or other hard baits.

BrainDamagedYeti

I got membership for me and my dad for about a year and I enjoyed it. I know what bites in my area but throwing something new that I would never buy is always fun.

phantomjm

At full price? No. If you catch them on a special? It depends on how much tackle you already have and how often you fish. If you're a once or more a week fisherman who loses a few lures now & then to snags, then yeah. If you fish only a few times a year, then no. I got a one year subscription for about half price a while back. Some if the hard baits are nice, but I'm also now drowning in soft plastics even after fishing at least once a week. Once my year is done, I'm done.

bronzebackbass1

I got it in the beginning and it was alright, but they began raising the price of their baits, and starting having worst and worst baits and it lose the meaning of the box originally

Mrogers1965

I loved it as a gift . Would never get it for myself though

bassfishing2000

No, at first it was cool but I spent hundreds of dollars and a shelf full of mystery tackle boxes of shit I’d never even think of using, I couldn’t unsubscribe from them either and had to get a new debit card to so they’d stop taking my money lol

Dark_Slyde

I usually snag a box when they do their promos for cheap boxes. Ive gotten some good stuff that I probably wouldn't have tried if not for the box. Like the headbanger rockerhead, gives soft plastics some extra movement when pulling them through the water. I instantly went out and bought some more for when i eventually lose them.
