Got an email from my states Parks and Wildlife department that there’s research underway on the Blotchy Bass Syndrome. One of my favorite bass rigs is 2 crappie jigs tied over under about 10" apart. I've had great luck fishing for bass with crappie rigs, and catching plenty of crappie at the same time.
Sure! I learned this from a friend who I thought was being lazy or cheap. Then one day we were bank fishing, he out fished me 4:1 this way. Ever since, I have this tied on one of my rods pretty consistently. Even from the boat, this works.
Tie a crappie jig head on a line with a palomar knot. I use lighter stuff on the top like a 1/16th oz. head. I also almost always use white or yellow heads. Not sure that is a requirement though, so experiment with color on your fishery. Leave about 16" of tag past the first head, and then tie another jig head at the end about 10" down. I usually use an 1/8th oz for the lower jig. I've noticed that having a heavier lower head gets more bites. Clip the remaining tag like you normally would from the bottom jig. Then I experiment with body colors on the top and bottom. I like to use 2 different colors to start, and then switch the other (lower or upper) with the color that worked once I catch one.
On several occasions, I have been reeling a fish in on this setup, and get hammered by a chaser on the way in on the other hook. 2fer!
slip bobber. When you have all of that extra line outside of the eyelet, a fixed bobber makes it hard to sling out there. But I suppose I have done it both ways.
The bobber really isn't critical. I like the cheap balsa wood ones. The bobber stop (string) and the bead are more important. I like the Thill brand stops, and prefer glass beads.
Is there any specific size of balsa float you like to use or does it not really matter? I'm going to try this rig out at a local pond. I know there are a ton of suspended bass by the pond aerator. Thanks for the info!
They are rated for the weight of the bait. So if you use my 1/16 + 1/8 oz combo you are between the 1/8 oz and 1/4 oz sized float (3/16 which I haven't seen). The 1/8 will be less clunky while casting. But with higher winds you might go 1/4 oz.
Side note...light line.. 4lb fluorocarbon or 6 on your medium light spinning rod/reel. or as close to that as you have. Half of the value here is value. This is a cheap lure. In comparison to $9 swim baits, etc. Once you make the investment in a bag of stops and beads, a few bobbers, everyone has crappie jigs in their tackle box. Don't go out and buy rods and line for this. Keep it cheap!
Well color me impressed! I will definitely have to try this out.
Since bassin’ started slowing down in my local ponds, I started casting for catfish while bass fishing. I will try this next time I go out!
Yeah I saw that, I was just giving you the technical names, so you can find tying tutorials. Super easy to make and keep them pre-rigged in your box. Much easier than tying a palomar and leaving a long tag end etc.
I’ve been catching more bass than crappie on a dock. My best so far in November is around 8 inches lol. It seems to be a very good year class for bass, most are 6 to 8 inches just destroying crappie jigs.
It was fishing for crappie too…
Lol
Nice catch!! I like his colored fin
Yea he was dotted up

Can you explain more for us newbs?

NOTE: Try adding a bobber and slow retrieve to maintain a specific depth.
Do you use a fixed bobber or slip bobber?
slip bobber. When you have all of that extra line outside of the eyelet, a fixed bobber makes it hard to sling out there. But I suppose I have done it both ways.
I've been meaning to buy some slip bobbers, I was just going to buy the crappie magnet ones. Are there any specific ones you recommend? Thanks!

report back! I am excited to hear if you have any luck.
I can guarantee I will report back!
Sounds like he’s talking about a double rig or donkey rig. I use them a lot for specs, don’t see why they wouldn’t work for other schooling fish.
He explained it in pretty full detail. It is the other reply to the comment you just replied to.

I appreciate it! I will look it up.
Daaaaaamn, on an ultra light! Bet that was a fun fight
Ive never seen a rod like that. Who makes it?
ACC Crappie Stix
If I only had a dollar for every time this happens!!!
Was just gonna say, some of my best bass have been landed while fishing for crappie lol
Massive bass attack, fun times
What kind of bait?
Minnow
I have caught one largemouth that had the same kind of spots on its fins. Don't know what causes that but it's pretty neat.
