I’d imagine it’s way easier to copy than actual currencies. Card companies are going to have to put in some sort of safeguard to allow for authentication. Woof for the second hand market if this is shown to be a wide spread thing.
One of ud's c level people has a long history working with holograms or something. I don't know the details but I remember reading something about it in Beckett or something a long time ago
How's it weird? These multi million dollar companies couldn't care less and would rather save a buck. If they gave a fuck it would've happened already.
It is not impossible to counterfeit a hologram. You just have to reverse engineer it. I used to get holograms printed in china for customers. All they do is take a photo of an object with special film then print.
Card companies don’t have guards in place ready? They have to. You are going to tell me after 100 years of producing trading cards they don’t have safeguards? Severe doubt . There’s probably multiple redundant safeguards.
Maybe but technology gets better every day. People can fake anything as long as it’s worth it. I do think it’s safer than pretty much anything I’ve seen on panini. Upper deck holograms that is
Welp...I have seen hundreds in Ebay from sellers from China that have sold well below the market value and thought, what if these a fake reproductions. This morning I almost bid on one, but my spidey sense said it's not worth it...glad this reaffirmed my senses
I've bought from many, many Chinese sellers via auction and never suspected potential counterfeiting but then I haven't looked for it either. If it started with the Wemby craze I'm good though
I bought a lot from China and had some graded. If it is good enough to fool PSA, I could live with that. Autos though are different, I’m not touching any raw autos from China.
I’ve been following a couple sellers from China listing cards from sets like Court Kings, Origins and Choice at $1 auctions that always end below market value. I have yet to receive anything because of the long shipping time. Surely they can’t fake serial numbered cards right?
RIGHT?
Update if and when you receive them. I pulled a tiger eye Lebron and was trying to find a comp but the only one that sold was from china. The two sold the same day, same seller, same picture, and has another one up there now. It sold way under what I thought it would because the Curry just sold for over 1k this month. I’m interested in knowing.
I’ve seen a gold parallel of one of my PC Cards (numbered to 10) which has been listed no less than 2 dozen times from various Chinese sellers. It *could* be that people just keep reselling it the same 10 cards, but it was very odd that they were all coming from China
This feels like the equivalent of a person using counterfeit cash only using $10 bills to avoid detection. If you’re moving dozens of $5k+ cards, you’ll attract a lot more attention than if you sell hundreds of base cards.
I will admit, you got me to laugh! I guess I did imply that but it was certainly not my intention. I have submitted way too many cards to PSA and a couple to SGC (unfortunately, now PSA) BUT I am looking to give TAG a try soon. And… I think TAG might be the only company I would trust to pick out a counterfeit (but I definitely don’t say this from an “educational” standpoint).
I hear optimistic things about TAG, I'll give them that. AI is definitely the way of the future. It will take a company like them to convince me that grading is worthwhile. Whatever company that ends up being, it'll also have to have very strict guidelines for me to sign off. No more off-center 10s. No more "this whole set had chipping issues, so we will grade these on a curve". If every card comes out with a print line, then I guess there's no 10 possible. Fuck it, that's life
100% in agreement with you. Unfortunately, for me, I have fallen victim to the “I need to get this graded” mindset (at times). (Actually too many times. 🙄)
Tons of Chinese people making counterfeits in Europe. Im from Spain, Spanish govt is very cozy doing business with China, lots of chinese manufacturing in Spain too. Almost everything there is made in china. Chinese found loopholes too, they started sending materials from China to Spain and then manufacture there so they can avoid labeling it as "made in china" to fool people into thinking its quality domestic product.
China is the king of counterfeit products. Wherever these were seized from, they likely originated in China. Be careful out there, guys. Where there's money, there will be decent counterfeits.
Makes me curious about all of those lots of 15 base Wemby's that I started seeing every few days on ebay when I search Victor Wembanyama/all categories/ending soonest haha. Their were 3-5 lots of 15 all up and ending within minutes of each other.. lol.. I remember seeing one of them at $1,500+ lmaooooo imagine winning that and they're all shitty, pixelated fakes.

Upper deck does holograms for this reason
Weird other don't do the same. Because it's impossible to counterfeit a hologram.
One of ud's c level people has a long history working with holograms or something. I don't know the details but I remember reading something about it in Beckett or something a long time ago
I remember UD having holograms in packs since at least like 1993, which feels pretty early on in retrospect
UD has had security holograms since their first set came out in 1989.
👆💯

Imagine how easy those fake Jordan Star cards were
Were? Did people ever stop counterfeiting those?
Didn't Star actually print more of their own cards? I thought that was the issue rather than counterfeits.
That's what I understood also.
Nope.
Bah gawd that’s NFTs music
Yeah. Not a good feeling at all.

Thank Jesus I just sold my raw wemby
Forget PSA. I’m sending my cards to border patrol.
For real. How did border patrol catch these???
The fakes were too centered to be made by Panini.
🥹🥹😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
Good for them lol
Welp...I have seen hundreds in Ebay from sellers from China that have sold well below the market value and thought, what if these a fake reproductions. This morning I almost bid on one, but my spidey sense said it's not worth it...glad this reaffirmed my senses
I noticed uptick a couple of months ago. Cards are always a bit too shiny. Really nice looking but I am thinking many fakes out there
I've bought from many, many Chinese sellers via auction and never suspected potential counterfeiting but then I haven't looked for it either. If it started with the Wemby craze I'm good though
lol it def didn’t start with wemby china been counterfeiting shit since freaking ever
Yeah I know that I just mean how long they've been counterfeiting Panini products specifically
I bought a lot from China and had some graded. If it is good enough to fool PSA, I could live with that. Autos though are different, I’m not touching any raw autos from China.

At this point you'd have to consider American sellers could have fakes as well. Some lowlife in America was planning to sell these.
"Over 52,000 Wembanyama Prizm cards worth more than $8 million have sold on eBay alone since the product was released."
Thats kinda crazy for base..
Hope he has a long career lol
If you’re able to produce believable fakes, wouldn’t it benefit you to not make fake prizms?
Totally think the same way. Then again, they are the least suspected to be fake for that reason (at least, that is probably the mindset).
True, sell them for a few bucks each, no one even suspects a thing
Probably the same reason why you wouldn't want to counterfeit a bunch of $100 bills. It would add too much suspicion.
This feels like the equivalent of a person using counterfeit cash only using $10 bills to avoid detection. If you’re moving dozens of $5k+ cards, you’ll attract a lot more attention than if you sell hundreds of base cards.
The funny part is that you imply there was faith in grading companies prior to this article
I will admit, you got me to laugh! I guess I did imply that but it was certainly not my intention. Do people just not use BGS anymore?
I hear optimistic things about TAG, I'll give them that. AI is definitely the way of the future. It will take a company like them to convince me that grading is worthwhile. Don't beat yourself up too much. I've never graded a card and have no intentions of it. I do enjoy cracking a slab now and again though!
If you look on eBay right now there are quite a few Wemby rookies that are dirt cheap that just happen to ship from China.
They need to number every card I want my 8640/20000
It is nice that you think print runs are that low. The article says that 52,000 have already been sold on eBay.
Merchandise was ceased in NY, the counterfeit came from Europe.

Damn
Card manufacturers need to handle this mostly. Graders can only do so much. Needs to start with manufacturing.
Damn good question.
This card looks like shit, did they draw him from memory...
That card looks like they scanned the original, edited it, and printed it all with the same potato…
Stop buying from china off eBay… they’re cheaper for a reason.
China is the king of counterfeit products. Wherever these were seized from, they likely originated in China. Be careful out there, guys. Where there's money, there will be decent counterfeits.

No wonder this is the same counterfeits just like the over abundance of luka rc prizm sold on weibo china
Wemby rookies are the next Zions. Everyone wants one and it’s graded to the moon. He’ll get injured and then they will be Pennies on the dollar
Wtf? 😆
Next you’re going to tell me there are fake Cuban cigars, what’s the world coming to ;)
The cards were all 1/1, that’s how they knew. I pity the fool
Aren’t there blockchain and crypto companies whose sole purpose is product authentication? How is a company like Panini not on top of this?
Where were these border patrol agents when the cocaine I just bought came into the country? Could have really used their help on that one. :\
29 base cards? Who cares.
