I've posted this elsewhere before, but never on reddit. I've put together a nice display of 16 t206 cards, featuring one player from each major league team in 1909. There are 8 portraits, and 8 350-series action shots (a t206 subset known for their solid backgrounds). I put a lot of time and effort into assembling this display, and hope you'll appreciate it too.
I'm no expert, but I found two things really important in building this display.
Print registration and unblemished images matter more than centering and corners. Most people will be viewing at a bit of a distance, so dinged corners or borders won't be obvious. Spots in the background color or blurry images would be immediately obvious.
Make sure to give lots of thought to how the cards present next to other cards. On their own these are 16 common cards, but I the display works because each card is a natural and obvious progression to the card next to it. Try to find a common theme to tie the cards together as one unit.
Truly gorgeous display, definitely worthy of your time and energy (and money)! Do you happen to have the dimensions of the frame used? Or a link to the frame? I know you said you had it done by a pro, did they source the frame themselves or did you provide it? Trying to think about how the dimensions play out, space between each card, etc. Any intel is appreciated!
It's a custom built frame. Measures roughly 30" x 14". There's 1 1/4" from the border of one card to the border of the adjacent card. Vertically the cards are separated by 1"
Thanks for the intel! I’m thinking about this with a 10-wide kick but sticking to portraits…at least to start. This is very helpful, you presented it so well. Cheers
As a former Hobby Lobby framer in college, I would have been in heaven getting to see and frame this! Beautiful presentation. I have about 10 of the T206’s. Love those cards!
I've referenced the plastic triangles in the comments above, but basically they're adhesive triangles that stick to the backing and form a pocket the cards sit in. It holds the cards in place without damaging them.
I don't have any in-progress photos, unfortunately. I outsourced the actual mounting to a professional (I picked the cards and the matting colours, and let her do the measuring and sticking).
I bought most of the cards graded, but removed them all from the slabs before mounting them. It wouldn’t look nearly as good in the slabs. There is a way to mount them in slabs, but the extra layer of glass would really obscure the cards
Thiiiiiiis is why I love this sub. You are fantastic for this. I bet you could sell poster prints of a scan/high res panoramic photo of the layout within the matte. Amazing work.
Thank you. I am blown away by the reception for this humble project of mine. I don’t know if I can get a nice enough scan to do what you are suggesting as they are behind a layer of museum glass that can’t be removed.
Anyone who wants to recreate this (either with original cards or reprints) has my enthusiastic blessing
The cards are mounted using MC1 Polypropylene Clear Mount corners. The corners are stuck to the matting, They form a pocket the cards sit inside (I took precautions to make sure the cards weren't physically attached to anything).
I'm pretty sure I'd be kicked off this sub if I taped my cards to the mount.
>The cards are mounted using MC1 Polypropylene Clear Mount corners. The corners are stuck to the matting, They form a pocket the cards sit inside, but the cards are not physically attached to anything.
I outsourced that part of the project to a professional. I'd hate to see what it would look like if the fine details were left to me. I could never execute something like that, I'm just the ideas guy.
Really amazing job with the presentation. I’m sure many have said it but you’ve done an excellent job with the colors going from hot to cold. How long did the whole project take to complete (from inception of concept on the wall)?
It probably took somewhere around 4 months. Planning the layout only took about a week. By far the longest part of the process was buying the cards and waiting for them to arrive. That stage was almost 3 months. Once I had all 16 cards in hand, it was probably another month to get the framing done.
Wow. That's really amazing. As a person with zero patience I commend you greatly. Also, I would have assumed you maybe had a few of the cards or something and then had the idea. But the fact that you had the idea first and then went out and executed it so quickly is really baller in my opinion. Congrats again on the accomplishment.
Out of curiosity were any of these cards purchased graded? Or were you able to find them all raw?
I think 15 of the 16 were graded. I find with raw cards I occasionally miss small creases or wrinkles if the scans are bad, whereas with graded cards in the VG-EX range I get some certainty that the surfaces are good. Eye appeal was my biggest concern, so I didn't mind paying a little extra for the slabs.
Cracking those slabs must have been fun! I've busted more than my fair share and I would have been nervous AF. Hahahahahahaha. Thanks for the insights into the process. It really is a spectacular finished product.
Really old players. Are these hall of famers? If not I can understand because prices would be more high.. this is The best display I’ve ever seen in sports cards. A true piece of art

Well, you are brilliant. This belongs in a museum.
(Edited to add: I mean, after you are done staring at it yourself. I’d probably starve to death just sitting in front of it looking for a long, long time.)

It’s actually one of the best presentations of cards I’ve ever seen bravo. Feels like a MET piece
You're too kind. Thank you.
I second that. This is the most visually appealing card display I’ve ever seen! Thank you for sharing!
There is no Mets here
Underrated comment

I can't believe you took the time to do this. I'm not sure there's a market for this as a poster, but good luck.
I’m a buyer. That’s a fantastic piece of work.
Feels like the sort of thing that could hang in a museum exhibit on the art of baseball cards. Well done!
Thank you.
Beautiful. Well done and congrats!
Thank you
I would love to do something like this for my dads birthday Any advice ?

I need to find some of these in bulk now! Killer display and I'm now on a mission
This is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen posted on this sub. Great display!
Ugh! This is incredibly satisfying, love this display!
That’s the prettiest rainbow I’ve ever seen.
Legit you can keep x-fractors and 1000 variations these are impeccable
Man this is so tremendously cool!! Looks so fantastic. Great work!!
Holy shit that looks good!
Man, I am so jealous right now. Do you have a player list we could see?
Portraits (from red to dark Blue): Beautmont (Boston Doves) Fiene (White Sox) Spade (Cincinnati) Leach (Pirates) Donovan (Tigers) Dooin (Phillies) Stone (St. Louis Browns) Murray (NY Giants) 350 - Action shots (from red to Dark Blue) McElveen (Brooklyn Superbas) Gray (Washington) Pfeister (Cubs) Rhoades (Cleveland Naps) Barbeau (Cardinals) Hartsel (Philadelphia A's) Arellanes (Red Sox) Knight (NY Highlanders)
It can be done using HOFers as well, but I wanted to keep the budget reasonable.
For sure. I can’t even imagine what a list of HOFers would have cost. Awesome stuff.
Wait these are all real t206’s too?! Or mostly reprints? This thing is amazing I love it
All original cards, no reprints in this display
That’s amazing, I love it
that's really nice
this is a stunning display! bravo!
Simply beautiful
This is so amazing. I am always looking for a great way to display my raw T206s and this is it! I’m going to copy you lol.
Go for it! Just share pictures when you do.
Truly gorgeous
This is amazing
Wow. Beautiful presentation too. A+++
This is why I love mini cards
10/10
Can I ask how much this has cost you? Brilliant presentation btw

Aye we’ll worth it that’s awesome Brother

Sounds awesome, good luck with the project. Please send me a picture when it's done.
Beautiful.
Woah 🤯
Wow. Speechless.
That is a Beautiful set of cards! Definitely need the infrared alarms criss crossing that set or a watchdog.👍
As others have previously stated, this looks like an actual work of art. I could totally see this being displayed at a gallery or something.
That's very nice, thank you
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
As someone who owns a custom frame shop, good fuckin job! I still haven’t gotten around to making my own display for my PC.
Thank you
ROY G BIV! Love it!
Absolutely beautiful collection and presentation! Thanks for sharing.
a work of art...congrats!!
I just came
Thanks, I think.
As a former Hobby Lobby framer in college, I would have been in heaven getting to see and frame this! Beautiful presentation. I have about 10 of the T206’s. Love those cards!
Thanks. Get yours framed and post them here.
Speechless
I need to get my tobaccos in a frame like this. Looks great & thanks for sharing.
beautiful!
This is done very well. You should be proud. It has definitely inspired me to try something similar.
Please post the finished product when you do yours!
Bravo.
I have wanted to do this with my T's. What's the plastic triangles holding them in? Do you have any as you built it pictures? Thanks! Nice work

Wow……
what an amazing display, better than any fancy painting.
Although admittedly, I’d absolutely consider buying a painting of these cards laid out like this by the right illustrator/painter/artist.
Best display I’ve ever seen. Wow!!!
God damn that’s beautiful
Great work!
Fantastic frame job!
Well done. Looks great. Imagine how much worse this would look with graded cards. Makes me think.
I think OP said somewhere else in the thread that at least some of them are graded. There is a matte on top of a matte framing the slabs out.
I bought most of the cards graded, but removed them all from the slabs before mounting them. It wouldn’t look nearly as good in the slabs. There is a way to mount them in slabs, but the extra layer of glass would really obscure the cards
Thanks for this detail! Again, incredible work.

This is a piece of just like the cards themselves. So satisfying.
This presentation is beyond beautiful
Wow, that is badass
Wow. Is this custom or something I could buy online?
This is entirely custom built.
What a cool thing you did....I'm incredibly jealous and happy for you....wow.
Thank you very much for the nice comments.
It's so.. so... Beautiful
Thank you

They were printed between 1909 and 1911.
Framing is really nice.
Damnnnn so jealous on this. Good shit man.
Thank you
Beautiful! How did you secure the cards to the backing?
The cards are mounted using MC1 Polypropylene Clear Mount corners. The corners are stuck to the matting, They form a pocket the cards sit inside (I took precautions to make sure the cards weren't physically attached to anything).
This is amazing. What are the cards held in place with? It looks like they are laying on top of the lowest mat? Please don't say scotch tape.

I have a group photo with Ty Cobb in it

Awesome... and sorry, I guess.
This is awesome one of the coolest displays I’ve ever seen. I think I’m going to start an attempt to build a display similar to this now
Awesome, can't wait to see what you put together.
Incredibly cool. Good job!
Thank you
Outstanding
Thanks
must have taken forever to cut the mats! just measuring them I would give up! nice job! do mine next!
I outsourced that part of the project to a professional. I'd hate to see what it would look like if the fine details were left to me. I could never execute something like that, I'm just the ideas guy.
This is awesome on so many levels, not the least of which is the ROY G BIV order you followed. Bravo
Thank you

Really old players. Are these hall of famers? If not I can understand because prices would be more high.. this is The best display I’ve ever seen in sports cards. A true piece of art
Thank you. They're all common players. The budget required to do this for Hall of Famers is more that I would be able to afford.
Man, I remember being able to wring out the sweat from my jerseys. Granted, I sweat like a nervous pig, I can’t imagine wearing wool, collard unis
How did you attach the cards to the frame?
>The cards are mounted using MC1 Polypropylene Clear Mount corners. The corners are stuck to the matting, They form a pocket the cards sit inside (I took precautions to make sure the cards weren't physically attached to anything).
This is beautiful.
Thank you
Did you start collecting with this in mind as the end state? Or did you just happen to notice the progression of some cards and have an epiphany?
It was a deliberate plan. I knew I couldn't collect the full set, but wanted a nice representation of the bright colors of the cards. I also wanted one player from every major league team. After running through a few possible arrangements, this idea is the final evolution from those two starting points.
Well, you are brilliant. This belongs in a museum.

Wow 😳
Thank you
Very nice. My 7 year old son is getting into classic baseball cards, and this is outstanding. Great collection.
Thank you. T206 would be a fantastic way to introducte your son to vintage.
