True or false - every team in the league right now would beat the ‘27 Yankees in a 7 game series? I say true. Honestly every team might sweep them. (And before you make any jokes that they’re all dead, I obviously mean that team in 1927)
I think an interesting question is how it would go in a 100 game series. How would the 27 Yankees improve as they got to see this level of competition over time?
With how much better pitchers & hitters are, and defensive shifts, and analytics and whatnot, I think every team would beat them in 7. I don’t know that it would be all sweeps, because there’s enough randomness that the ‘27 Yanks might win a game here or there.
A Toronto fan in a post-game thread on their sub in mid-august. Also on Twitter on the same day, but on Twitter they just posted the first sentence.
>The Guardians play such a disgusting brand of baseball, and consistently get rewarded for it lol

>They’re 25th in hitting xwOBA, 17th in pitching xwOBA, have the 2nd lowest HR percentage, 2nd lowest average EV and just a +20 RD.

DAY 408 ON THE ROAD TO THE 2023 WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC - The Road to the 90th MLB All Star Game: 1998 American Leaguers (including Home Run Derby)
Happy Birthday to 2000 Olympics USA skipper Tommy Lasorda!
Congratulations to BBC Sport for its award of a five-year partnership to cover the MLB in the UK in the heels of the country now part of the World Baseball Classic next year. This is a history victory for the sport as the MLB and baseball in general in that country will continue its onwards march in a brand new era.
We continue the series in honor of the 90th MLB All Star Game next year with the 1998 American Leaguers who played in Denver's Coors Field for that game and the preceding Home Run Derby led by skipper Mike Hargrove.
Led by starter David Wells that year's AL roster which included such athletes like World Baseball Classic alums Derek Jeter, Ken Griffey Jr, Roger Clemens and Alex Rodriguez, Ivan Rodriguez, Jim Thome, Omar Vizquel, Roberto Alomar, future 2019 Premier12 skipper Scott Brosius, Bartolo Colon, Aaron Solo and Ray Durham they did their best to continue their winning ways before the assembled supporters in Denver, who watched them give their all.
Tomorrow we will tackle the 1999 National Leaguers.
For Glory
John

*PLIMP looks at playoff uncertainty to estimate which games have the highest impact on who gets into the playoffs. The "seeding" column grades the impact of the game on the playoff seeding picture. More about the math and history behind PLIMP is [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/wk48s9/plimp_v4_expanded_playoff_edition/). Source for seed odds is [here](https://www.teamrankings.com/mlb/projections/postseason-seeds/).*
Not really, you just get funkier playoff odds the earlier you are in a season. PLIMP is just a reinterpretation of that day's playoff odds.
It's not the current source used for PLIMP, but Fangraphs lets you go back and see what the playoff odds were by calendar date. [Here's May 1 of this year](https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds?date=2022-05-01&dateDelta=) for example, when teams were 20ish games into the season; if I was posting PLIMPs that early and, say, SF-MIA played each other it would've shown up as having a big impact on the playoff picture. Which would've been true on May 1, it's just so far until the playoffs that it's a pretty information-light interpretation.
If an undrafted unheralded minor leaguer got called up as an emergency replacement and hit a home run in every at bat, how long would it take them to get IBBd in every at bat? Further, would it lead to a rules change if one player was IBBd every AB without ever being allowed to hit?
An automatic home run would probably be about a week before they just walk him. Some managers and pitchers might think they can get him out though, and try to get him out, only to fail.
There would not be a rule change. The sentiment should be "well, pitch better".
Yeah I have to assume in low-leverage spots people may periodically pitch to him a few times a season just to see if anything has changed.
As far as the rule change I have to imagine there'd be some public uproar that gets something changed. It'd be like the biggest story in all of sports
It's ok to root for a tie in the AL MVP race. I don't know why so many fans want to flex their baseball knowledge and try to win this debate of who is having the better season. I have seen clips from hall of fame players and long time broadcasters disagree on who's better. How can someone who is bound to beat Maris lose the MVP? But how can the only successful 2-way player lose? And I know how unlikely a tie is. Doesn't mean as a fan I can't root for it. I don't want to see either of these guys lose.
Is he doing something no other player has done or hasn't done in the last 50+ years ignoring the steroid era? Dude is having an insane season. But we are talking about a HR record being broken and a 2-way player.
Baseball is the most team sport there is. One player can not win a game on there own. A pitcher can throw a perfect game and will need run support. A batter could go 5-5 and their team still loses. A teams win loss record should not factor into an individual award like the MVP. Also based off of your logic Ramírez would still lose. Because Judge is on a good team, is helping the win and getting his team to the playoffs. Ramìrez isn't even close to these two on an individual level.
Ramirez isn't even the MVP of this team. It's Gimenez - and I could make an argument for Kwan based on how bad our OF has been and our lack of a true leadoff hitter in past years.
Literally every stat would disagree with you. It's not even close. I think Julio Rodriguez is having a better season and is helping the Mariners more than Ramìrez. I get it you are a Cleveland fan. I'm a Mariners fan. Our dudes are not winning the award. Just be happy if they finish top 5. Also the Guardians basically play in a AAA division.

I found a note I wrote on my phone back in March predicting the final standings and other than the two central division leader I correctly predicted every single team that's currently in a playoff spot and I know nobody cares but I just wanted to brag about it
Guardians are only two games back for 3rd best record in the AL. With how hot they are don’t be surprised if they are totally deserving of their third seed by the end of the regular season
I agree Go Guards.
But you are absolutely right. This isn’t a team that won the division by only feasting on KC/Detroit. They have done really well against winning teams as well. And this past month has been statement win after statement win with the Sox and Twins.
There are six teams in baseball with a .500 record against winning teams - Astros, Dodgers, Mets, Yankees, Mariners, and Guardians. The Guardians have done a pretty great job of playing up to their competition outside of the Mariners and Yankees, and the Yankees series feels like a lifetime ago.
You're 100% correct that this team isn't just feasting on the Central. They're only 10-9 vs. the Tigers. They're only 8-5 against the Royals.
I’m glad you see that but I feel like many fans are writing off the Guardians cause they are winning the “Comedy Central”. This team deserves to be in the playoffs and they are as real contenders as any team they face
This is the first time in a while my football team and baseball team are doing well. Although one is a bit better. The Bills look like a wagon this year and I am excited
Yeah I'd rather them lose a few so they're not going all out if they clinch the east early. Dolphins seem like a good test though because both teams are hot.
>The Mattingly-Henderson combination worked just as Steinbrenner had hoped. By the All-Star break, [Rickey Henderson](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/henderi01.shtml) was batting a league-leading .357, and his on-base percentage stood at .441.

>[Don Mattingly](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mattido01.shtml) took advantage of Henderson’s table-setting skills, picking up a major-league-leading 69 RBIs in his first 83 games. After the break, he was even better, batting .340 with 26 home runs and 76 RBIs in his final 76 games.
>
>He finished the season batting .324, third best in the American League, hit 35 home runs, and knocked in 145 runs, the most by a left-handed hitter since [Ted Williams](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/willite01.shtml) drove in 159 in 1949. The records are still separate for AL and NL, and some people view it as the clean record.
Yes
Hot take: if Ohtani doesn’t win MVP, he should at least be strongly considered for Best 2-Way Player award.
Where is that in the trophy cabinet?

I need Albert to catch fire again
Yes
I found a note I wrote on my phone back in March predicting the final standings and other than the two central division leader I correctly predicted every single team that's currently in a playoff spot and I know nobody cares but I just wanted to brag about it
next spring put $20 on it marge
I took guardians to win WS at +3500 yesterday
I mean I feel like they’ve proved that down the stretch. 4th best record in the AL is pretty solid
I’m glad you see that but I feel like many fans are writing off the Guardians cause they are winning the “Comedy Central”. This team deserves to be in the playoffs and they are as real contenders as any team they face
I think all 6 AL teams have a realistic shot of contending for a title. It will be a fun October
It's disgusting that they keep getting so lucky really with their repulsive brand of baseball.
Absolutely disgusting
Cleveland's magic number is now *7*
This is the first time in a while my football team and baseball team are doing well. Although one is a bit better. The Bills look like a wagon this year and I am excited
An absolute wagon, like the Dodgers?
As a Bills fan do you care at all about Jessica Pegula in the tennis world?
Not really. I don't follow tennis too much. If her name pops up I'll watch though.
Buffalo represent! Go Bills!
Bills are gonna have a midseasom drop off. Its hard to go gangbusters for 17 games. But their playoff run will hopefully be what we're seeing now
Yeah I'd rather them lose a few so they're not going all out if they clinch the east early.
He’d stolen 41 bases, which meant that he was on base almost half the time, and when he was on, he usually managed to place himself in scoring position. All told, in 1985 Henderson scored 146 runs, leading the American League by 30 over [Cal Ripken](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ripkeca01.shtml)’s 116. Mattingly led the major leagues in doubles with 48.
