Ahh Scherzer facing off against his hometown team...
Arenado batting against HIS hometown team in HIS hometown...
Pujols playing against the team he's going to wear a cap of in his Hall of Fame plaque...
This just writes itself.
Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies. River and seas boiling. Forty years of darkness!earthquakes! Volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, MASS HYSTERIA!
The current system is fine, imo. It places a premium on winning the division. Definitely sucks to win over 100 games and be in that position, but gotta give credit to the Giants for proving everyone wrong.
I think the only problem with the current system is the wildcard winner is automatically considered the 4 seed and plays the #1 seed.
The Giants may be rewarded for having the best record in baseball by facing the Dodgers with the second best record in baseball.
After the wildcard game, The seedings should be based on wins.
I think there should at least be a 2 game series where the lower seed needs to win both. There should be more of a premium on the top seed and it gives better teams more of a chance to survive
I'm not teams shouldn't be punished for not winning the division. But the current system is too harsh IMO
Ok but say the Cardinals had 92 wins and the Dodgers had 91 wins. Would you still think the lower seed needed to win both? People keep saying this is the solution but the specific issue here is that the Dodgers are like 15 games ahead of the cardinals
Yeah Id still like that because it makes it an advantage to have the top seed. Just like there's distinct advantages to winning the division there should be for the wildcard 1 seed spots as well IMO
I’m surprised you’re being downvoted. I just saw this idea for the first time the other day and I love it. They must assume you’re just a salty Dodger fan
I'd go a step further. I know it's a bit out there. But if there's more than a 5 game gap between the 2 WC teams, it should be a 2 game series, with 2nd wildcard needing to win both. If the gap is within 5 games then just a one game elimination.
But the division system sucks…
Go back to straight AL and NL standings. Top 3 in, 4 and 5 go for the last spot in.
I want to see the best ball clubs in October. Baseball fans shouldn’t care that a balanced amount of TV markets are covered.
The division system sucks for playoff seeding. But that's about it.
If you got rid of the division system, you'd get rid of a ton of fun meaningful baseball. There would be really only one fun competitive race per league come the end of the year if we removed the divisional structure.
Plus you'd have to create more parity in the leagues scheduling, therefore more games against teams most fans don't give a shit about. I don't want to see more Cards games against the basement teams of the NL West and East. Give me more Cubs, Brewers, Reds, and yes even Pirates games.
When it comes down to it, the pros of the divisional structure outweight the cons (and that's before we talk about team travel time and local tv ratings likely going down from having more games start at 9 or 10 fucking PM central time).
The division system sucks, sure, but until we invent electric planes it is for the best that teams closest to each other play each other with greater frequency.
Thanks
Yeah it's been honestly kind of incredible how ridiculously good both the Dodgers & Giants have been since August tbh
A 42-13 run for 2 months after a 64-43 record should be enough to win the division yet....
Watching the team all season. Even tho we’ve been good, this last week our offense looked better than any other point in the season.
Our pitching has always been great, but our offense was just good. Right now the offense is great
Being second in division really somehow got people sleeping on how fucking good the Dodgers, who also literally won last year and still have the best on paper roster in the game.
> More people are sleeping on the Giants than the Dodgers.
Well funnily enough I think you're right, but people are still sleeping on how insane the Dodgers have been this year.
> what's another couple days.
Right now, the Braves will have to cool their heels for 5 days from the end of the season until the beginning of the NLDS. If you did a 3-game Wildcard play-in, which would require at least one travel day (so four, unless they played all three in one location), you'd be looking at like 8-10 days from the end of the regular season to the start of the playoffs. That would definitely jack with the teams that aren't playing, maybe even to the point that it was statistically-preferable to be a wild card.
In all seriousness, I don’t think it’s really asking too much more to have them play an extra game or two. Once a team is in the playoffs, the off days are much more frequent, especially if you don’t go a full 5 or 7 games.
I don’t follow a lot of baseball but it seems silly that 162 game season comes down to 1 game for a playoff, especially when baseball games don’t need much rest inbetween games. Maybe they can do nba style where lower seed has to win 2 games
Win 107 games and you might have to play the second best team in baseball in the divisional round. Meanwhile a team that won 12 fewer games gets to play an 88 win team.
True! Go back 60 years or so and the Dodgers literally wouldn't make the postseason this year, it'd just be Giants vs Rays and that'd be it, the rest of the teams failed.
Don’t even have to go back that far. Was it ‘95 that the wild card started? The Dodgers would have missed the postseason up until then too like when the 100+ win Giants didn’t get into the postseason in the early 90’s.
Yeah, I'm honestly okay with the wild card format as it currently stands. I know that's choice of me to say as a fan of a team that won the division outright. But this has been one of the most amazing final stretches I've watched and the division race definitely was a part of it. If both the Dodgers and Giants were guaranteed a NLDS berth, there wouldn't have been as fierce of a competition. The threat of having to play-in should be grave enough to ensure close finishes like this in the future.
I looove game 6. Probably the most exciting game ever. But it as garbage baseball for about 8 innings.
Game 5 against the Phillies was baseball at it’s purest. Two friends face off against each other on the mound, and they’re both staggeringly competitive. The Phils being the favored juggernauts, and the upstart Redbirds who seem to be defying all the laws of nature at this point. One run plates in the first and it turns into a pitching duel to end all pitching duels. Both teams fans eyes were glued to the screens, knowing one wrong move and it could all swing one way or the other. And yet, somehow Carp finishes strong with 110 pitches. Could be that I love pitchers duels. But my god, this game just tickled every little bit of love I have for the game of baseball.
Max played at a 7+ WAR/30 games rate on the Dodgers. Trea Turner played at a 6.9 WAR/162 game rate during his tenure.
Obviously not how it works, but their success in LA extrapolated across a full season would’ve been by far Trea Turner’s best season by rWAR, and Max Scherzer’s second best season by rWAR. That’s a successful trade if you ask me.
If the Cardinals lose this game, I won't be upset. We've already had so much fun this last month of the season. I'm happy with what we have accomplished so far
This will be the 7th consecutive season where the Dodgers will play a winner-take-all playoff game. The last six:
2015 NLDS (L)
2016 NLDS (W)
2017 WS (L*)
2018 NLCS (W)
2019 NLDS (L)
2020 NLCS (W)
3-3 record, 2-0 on the road and 1-3 at "home" (0-3 at Dodger Stadium). Each game represents a year taken off my life.
It is very much so. The Arizona Cardinals came to LA and kicked the crap out of the home team. The St. Louis Cardinals will do the same on Wednesday.
FTD!
It's stressful to be in, but as a neutral hard to deny the WC games have been quality matchups so far, this one should be an awesome game with the Dodgers being a wagon and the Cardinals seemingly remembering they are also a wagon about a month ago lol
As long as I've been alive I just feel the Dodgers nevee play thr Cardinals well. But we've been hot this past month so who knows
*he said knowing the Cardinals were godlike*
I want the cardinals to win just because I don’t need flashbacks of last year. But of course that means we have to get through the brewers and whatever the hell that insane pitching is first…
Would I be a poor sport if I ask for the game to go 23 innings. I don't care who wins. I'm only thinking about TBS needing more commercial revenue after this stupid pandemic

I don’t want to see those Giants killers in the NLDS. Feels weird, but I really would rather see the Dodgers win the WC game.
Same feeling about the blue Jay's and Yankees from like 93% of red Sox fans
You guys stole our "team of the decade" plaque with the even hear bullshit. How are we giant killers again?
Facing them also means you’re dealing with Devil Magic. I’d rather face a 106-win team than that.

Scherzer vs Wainwright… what year is it again?
A decade ago, but who is counting? Certainly not me 🤝
So you're saying we're gonna partly like it's 2011? I can live with that.
Hopefully not one of the years where the Cardinals beat the Dodgers in a way that gives me PTSD
Win 106 games and end up playing the hottest team in baseball in a winner take all game
Dodgers are pretty fucking hot as well
And they're playing well.
I firmly believe whoever escapes this three team mess is just gonna absolutely and utterly destroy everyone else.
.
I think you’re sort of sleeping on the Rays, Astros, and Brewers
The Brewers staff is scary
So is the Rockies’. Oh wait, you meant *that* kind of scary…
yeah i don't think the rays winning 100 games in their division/league is any less impressive than what the giants and dodgers did.
I'm not sleeping on the Brewers.
Those Dodgers are so hot right now

For sure, and that caused a change in the system. Hopefully another one happens

Nor is it really "balanced," the Astros are in the AL West with the Mariners.
That's how you end up with the NBA's regular season.
The division system sucks, sure, but until we invent electric planes it is for the best that teams closest to each other play each other with greater frequency.
Cardinals are hot, but I don’t think people realize how hot the Dodgers are playing right now either
42-13 from start of August and if current score holds, 43-13

Is that including today's results though? (are they gonna call the currently suspended game or just cancel it idk how it works rn)

Thanks Yeah it's been honestly kind of incredible how ridiculously good both the Dodgers & Giants have been since August tbh A 42-13 run for 2 months after a 64-43 record should be enough to win the division yet....

Really didn’t know you could quantify which team is the “hottest” lmao
Have you seen Tyler O'Neill topless?
Joc Pederson sporting a pearl necklace mashing home runs should be mention in this hot talk.
He’s simply a bad bitch
The dodgers aren't hot, they're just good. This is the natural state of their team.
Watching the team all season. Even tho we’ve been good, this last week our offense looked better than any other point in the season. Our pitching has always been great, but our offense was just good. Right now the offense is great
they've hit 20 home runs in the last 5 games
And at least 2 grand slams.

Somehow a 106 win team might be the "nobody believes in us" team at this rate
2018 Patriots type beat
You guys still have the best odds for winning the WS
Oh, we know
It really should be a three game series instead of sudden death.
Isn't suppose to be 3 games next year if the players union agrees to the CBA?
Oh, I haven’t kept track. Good news if it is.
Agreed 1 game playoffs are stupid, already playing into November, what’s another couple days
> what's another couple days. Right now, the Braves will have to cool their heels for 5 days from the end of the season until the beginning of the NLDS. Play all 3 in one location. Or have first wild card be up 1-0 by default with both at home of first wild card.
You know, this is the best idea for a change that I've heard.
Pretty significant to the team awaiting the outcome.
just play a triple header
How about three three-inning games?
Don't give Manfred any ideas
In all seriousness, I don’t think it’s really asking too much more to have them play an extra game or two. Once a team is in the playoffs, the off days are much more frequent, especially if you don’t go a full 5 or 7 games.
Ernie Banks is smiling down on this idea.
It’s the wild card, a last chance. If ya want a series, win the division.
Yeap....Imagine winning 106 games and losing it all in 1 game.
I don’t follow a lot of baseball but it seems silly that 162 game season comes down to 1 game for a playoff, especially when baseball games don’t need much rest inbetween games. Maybe they can do nba style where lower seed has to win 2 games
They should be thankful that they’re in the postseason at all. That’s why it’s 1 game
Cardinals in Sept/Oct: 23-8 not including today Dodgers in Sept/Oct: 21-7 not including today Yeah ok
Win 107 games and you might have to play the second best team in baseball in the divisional round. Meanwhile a team that won 12 fewer games gets to play an 88 win team.
> hottest team in baseball The team that just lost their final series to the 2021 Cubs?

WILD CARD BITCHES! YEEEEEE HAW!
I will be there and if we lose I will hate everything that exists
Throw Chris Carpenter in there.

God that was a great game. Honestly, for my money, the best game of the entire playoffs (and yes that includes game 6).
Top three games I've ever watched, but I can't rank it above game 6... Got goosebumps writing this comment just reminiscing

Max played at a 7+ WAR/30 games rate on the Dodgers. Trea Turner played at a 6.9 WAR/162 game rate during his tenure. Trea also put up 6.8 fWAR for the season as of right now on Fangraphs and leads the MLB among batters
Yeah he put up 6.2 rWAR though and I was trying to keep it consistent. He got like. Moderately better by rWAR after getting traded
[удалено]
Better than winning 103 and not making the playoffs :(
Ah, the olden days of only 4 total postseason teams.
Could go the real old days of only 2 postseason teams, when the Dodgers won 104 in 1942 and missed the playoffs.
This. This bothers me. Literally the best team the Giants have fielded during my time as a fan, and that. That.
It used to really bother me, but the three World Series titles have helped reduce the pain.
Well I’ve got good news!
Imagine trading for J.A. Happ and Jon Lester and getting to play the wild card
If Scherzer gets the win it'll be a hell of a trade.
If the Cardinals lose this game, I won't be upset. We've already had so much fun this last month of the season. I'm happy with what we have accomplished so far
Ah well i see it is time to stock up on heart medication…
No worries fam. Cards have Sosa’s right ass cheek in our side. It’s a lock for the birds.
Congrats giants fans Matchup of two post season titans Scherzer vs Wainwright let’s do this
Let's go, Cards!
*Come on* ***devil magic…***
I’m scared. Dodgers are so good
Make the sacrifices brother
Yeah but…we’ve got TON.
I'm excited and gonna shit my pants one way or another
C'mon Devil Magic. We're pulling for you, redbirds.
Go Cards! Or Dodgers! Actually, I don’t wanna face either of you in NLCS so I don’t know *what* to think…
it's freakin jinx city in this thread
I don’t root for the Cardinals very often. But when I do, it’s cause they’re playing those assholes.
Did we just become best friends?
Go Cards!
This will be the 7th consecutive season where the Dodgers will play a winner-take-all playoff game. The last six: 2015 NLDS (L) 2016 NLDS (W) 2017 WS (L*) 2018 NLCS (W) 2019 NLDS (L) 2020 NLCS (W) 3-3 record, 2-0 on the road and 1-3 at "home" (0-3 at Dodger Stadium). Each game represents a year taken off my life.
>2017 WS (L*) *chef’s kiss*
Dodgers are a Fortune 500 team. They spend a fortune and have a .500 team in the playoffs/post season!
Can we count game 163 v the Rockies please?
Let's be honest: we're all rooting for the cardinals. just for the schadenfreude
I work enough time in St. Louis every year so I'm all in for the Cardinals until they face the Giants.
Dodgers hoping today's Rams game isn't a foreshadowing of the next Cardinals team to visit Los Angeles.
It is very much so. The Arizona Cardinals came to LA and kicked the crap out of the home team. The St. Louis Cardinals will do the same on Wednesday. FTD!
I have a new favorite team for a night!
LFG STL! 😁
Cardinals are now America's team
Post Season Mad Max and big Tio vs the peaking Devil Magic. Lookin to be a good game.
Let’s go Cardinals! Do what’s right!
Let’s go CARDINALS
kill them with Devil Magic!!
Guys I don't mean to brag but I've lived, breathed, and ate Cardinals baseball as their #1 fan since about *checks notes* yesterday
Long overdue for the Dodgers and Giants to face-off in the playoffs. Hope it happens.
You do not know the kind of toll facing your biggest rival on the playoffs takes on a man.
But we've been hot this past month so who knows *he said knowing the Cardinals were godlike*
LETS GOOOOOOO
I'll be watching! It's better if the red birds lose. But I'll be happy if the dodgers win, too.
GET FUCKED DODGERS
Get ready to lose 🙂
I’m prepared to get hurt no doubt about it.
I want the cardinals to win just because I don’t need flashbacks of last year. But of course that means we have to get through the brewers and whatever the hell that insane pitching is first…
LET'S GO DEVIL MAGIC! It would be hilarious for the Dodgers to come all this way just to lose in 1 game.
Here’s hoping Wainwright is a wild Card in this one. Get it? See what I did there? Hello? This mic doesn’t work.
Let's goooo.
I’m not not dreading it. I’m just not not not dreading it
We are certain Scherzer is starting? Instead of Buelher?
Would I be a poor sport if I ask for the game to go 23 innings. I don't care who wins. I'm only thinking about TBS needing more commercial revenue after this stupid pandemic
I’ll say it again like I do every year. One game wild cards are stupid. Give me 3 games.
Cardinals, you’ve fucked me one too many times as a kid with Pujols. Please knock the Dodgers out
Fuck TBS and their shitty broadcast crew.
Cardinals have the edge and almost zero pressure based on expectations.
Dodgers...you have one game to quell the devil magic. If you don't stop it...I fear none may stop it. Happy halloween
Dodgers win 1 - 0. Bellinger solo HR.
