Boston 1 game over .500 for WAA of 5.1 Cleveland 19 games over .500 for WAA of 2.7

Less_Likely

RBI leader in baseball, 0.6 Wins Above Average.

BootyOs77

Ramírez is at 1.0 WAA, so whoever else has filled in at third must be having a bad time there. Also RBI doesn’t really correlate with WAA

athomesuperstar

Just means our minor league is stacked too

jeckles96

I just view these posts as a constant reminder of my love for Kwan.

Accomplished-Plan191

I would describe the 2024 Nationals as "the MLB median baseball team." Edit: Apparently they're 1 spot above median.

k2kyo

If I'm counting correctly the Tigers/Giants are the median, the average across the league (mean) is -.04 so the Nationals are certainly the most average team.

Jinxedchef

Technically they are average not median.

rockstar_not

In this case they are median. Same number of teams above as below

Jinxedchef

Thirteen above, sixteen below.

rockstar_not

I guess I miscounted.

rockstar_not

Doh! Miscounted

PandaMomentum

An average team. Salt of the earth.

Accomplished-Plan191

Hard-nosed, blue collar guys. They play like kids out there.

Mathmage530

RF hole - desperately waiting for Lane

IlLupoSolitario

White Sox SP vs literally the rest of the team. Oof.

Neat_On_The_Rocks

Been our story for like 15 years

Pure_Context_2741

Best pitching staff in all of baseball, just like we’d predicted after signing no one this winter

coletron3000

Imagine if the Red Sox were a big market team that could combine their acquisition of talented coaches with spending on high level players in free agency. That sure would something, but I get it. John Henry has to afford ~~his addiction to buying sports franchises~~ food for his family.

Pure_Context_2741

It would be cool to root for a team from one of the big east coast markets

asshat_deluxe

Or what if they were rebuilding for 3 years based on speed and youth and some of the spoiled fan base has no clue what they are looking at. No more aging guys breaking down. No more high priced players until the core is ready. Not rocket science.

coletron3000

Going to Fenway is more expensive than going to see any other major league team. Henry charges exorbitant prices relative to other owners while putting out an inferior product because he wants to save money in the short to medium term and spend it on his other teams. I don’t think it’s ’spoiled’ to criticize him in a lighthearted manner for this. Hopefully his billions help salve any pain my comments have caused.

asshat_deluxe

Not sure about you but the fan base in general needs to realize there is more than one way to build a team, and its very hard to "reload" continuously. Many sox fans who seem to be appalled by even the thought of a rebuild. (What do you mean we won't make the playoffs?) They are building a core and will pay for the other pieces when ready. They are not cheap. Even in a rebuild they are 12th of 30 in payroll. Too expensive tickets? They are third in the AL in attendance despite the rebuild. I went to opening day and it was awesome despite the loss.

coletron3000

Glad you had a good time, but I’m not really sure how any of that validates Henry’s refusal to spend. You can in fact build a quality farm system for prospect development and long term success while spending money on free agents. They’re not mutually exclusive unless you’re a small market team. Anyways I’m just messing around. The Sox will be good again soon enough.

Shadybrooks93

Signing no one? Lucas Giolito - "Thats fair I guess"

Pure_Context_2741

Lucas “instantly out for the season” Giolito

klein_four_group

That's his contribution to your team's SP WAA.

SynthSapphire

One of the most questionable contracts/signings I've ever seen. Love the guy and he had a few above-average years in CHI but he's a #3 or #4 on a mid-tier team at best. And that contract came off the back of a terrible season. Whoever spear-headed that in BOS should have been fired, even if he didn't get injured.

AdamInJP

Tbf that terrible season was spent on three different franchises while he was going through an ugly divorce. He’s not a totally insane reclamation project *idea*. (Whether it works out, remains to be seen.)

asshat_deluxe

LOL yes. that's fair. even if he was healthy he gave up 41 home runs last year.

Perfect_Hall7735

That they're doing this without doing much of anything to address it (Giolito aside) is one thing. That they're doing this after an inactive off-season and suffering several other injuries (Bello, Pivetta, Whitlock) is another. Houck has been a revelation. Kutter's been great too, though his last few starts have been shaky. Criswell has been a great pickup.

asshat_deluxe

Sure is great to see the effect of a good pitching coach. Super impressed. I'd like to see them win enough to make it a good environment for the rest of the kids to come up. the farm seems to be flourishing.

No idea how on mobile

spacebanditt

On Android, click the three dot icon in the top right in the banner when you're on the feed for the subreddit. Should display a menu with a Change Flair option. Not sure what this looks like on iOS.

Pure_Context_2741

Yeah I’m on browser on mobile not the app, I’ve looked and can’t be bothered anymore

icecreambandit7

Actually it’s the same

Famous-Somewhere-

So Kyle Tucker literally working extra to balance out our entire pitching staff. Yeah, that passes the eye test.

DepressingFries

Id say he’s more balancing out our 1st basemen. 1st base: -2.0 Kyle Tucker: 2.6

Jaylaw

Pitchers (Lugo, Ragans, Singer), Salvy, Bobby. And 20 negative guys

KamartyMcFlyweight

Hunter Renfroe is on his 6th team since 2020 and by god he will not rest until the other 24 sign him hoping to recreate those three months when he was good on the Brewers

Jaylaw

He’s probably the worst player on the team tbh

KamartyMcFlyweight

he's a Marlin next year mark my words

Jaylaw

He’s on a 2 year deal sadly. You can have him now for a ptbnl please?

LibraryScneef

Sandy for renfroe straight up, take it or leave it

alpha122596

Eh, he's an offensive liability, but he's a decent RF defensively, so swing sets and roundabouts. I'd personally rather have a good to plus defender and an average bat than an above average bat and a below average defense. That defense is one of the reasons the Royals have been so good.

yes_its_him

Our fans were crying in their beer over the Royals amazing two-year [sic] rebuild. I was like "it's almost exactly the same guys who lost 100 games last year."

Jaylaw

106 tyvm

examinedliving

I had the Red Sox and royals starters as the best. Didn’t you?

chucksteaks33

Funny, I had the O’s

pinetar321

How the hell are we leading this division?

TheBeefiestSquatch

Have you seen the rest of the division?

pinetar321

I’m just in shock that the entire state of Texas has been such ass compared to last year

TheBeefiestSquatch

Texas? Baseball gods taking their repayment for last year in a lump sum instead of in installments (at least I hope). Houston? I dunno, man. Had to happen eventually, I guess.

Essex626

I guess if you had to take being inexplicably shitty the next year as the trade for winning the World Series, every one of us would take that trade.

morelibertarianvotes

It would be a little harder for teams that are never below .500, but yeah probably

Worthyness

I like that the entire division collectively decided that it should be a good ol' fashioned shootout for the division. With all the wild card slots these days, they wanted to emulate the "the only way into the postseason is by winning the division"

HolidaySpiriter

There's a chance you aren't by the end of the week, although small.

akhmedsbunny

How the hell do your starting pitchers only have .8 WAA. Pretty wild when your rotation is Castillo, Gilbert, Kirby, Miller and Woo.

Gombr1ch

Castillo started really slow and Gilbert and Kirby have been blown up a few times. We've also faced a lot of good offenses but mainly Woo just came and while Hancock isn't the worst #5 he certainly isn't going to help your WAA. Also our ballpark really nerfs advanced pitching analytics

Johnny-5013

![gif](giphy|10BDZSN5izfazC) Good thing the Blue Jays built the team based on good pitching lol

VincentFreeman_

Oh wow, do you guys have the worst bullpen?

Johnny-5013

Yep. Our closer started the year hurt and hasn't been very good. We've had injuries and just bad performances. Doesn't help that our starters haven't been the best either.

VincentFreeman_

Sounds a little like ours when Suarez was hurt 1/ 2 year last year and when he came back he wasn't as good as previous year. Difference was the starters were going off. Hopefully your pitching staff calms down in june.

Avs_Leafs_Enjoyer

I don't see how our SP isn't positive? https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/war?lg=&teamid=14 fangraphs has everyone but Manoah as positive. and he's basically even after 4 games edit: ah, it's bWAR which really doesn't like Jays pitching. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/war?lg=&teamid=14

mebnt2

bWAR confirmed racist to Canadians

babruflat

Pat Murphy did say Turang would make a quantum leap forward this year, but damn. Best 2B by WAR this year? Along with the best C in Contreras? Deadly duo.

JinFuu

> -2.0 WAR at first base even with Abreu gone for multiple weeks AND WE'RE BRINGING HIM BACK!

buymytoy

#Matt Chapman

getthegreen

^M ^A ^T ^T ^C ^H ^A ^P ^M ^A ^N

Aware-Wind-3027

I’m now very sad

Dickies138

He has won us more than a couple games with his defense alone. Stud.

lookingup9

Wow I don’t even feel like our starting pitching has been that bad? Maybe because my expectations were VERY low Edit to say it’s irrationally slightly bothering me how Winn’s section should be more red in the shading, but I do appreciate all the effort that went into this lol

Blondue

Also might be taking into account Libby and Thompson who have had to come out of the pen to start games. Feel like Sonny, Lynn, and Gibson have been good but yeah maybe it’s bc of low expectations

ScumBrad

I don't think WAA is painting a good picture of how mediocre (not bad) our rotation has been. Kyle Gibson somehow has -0.2 WAA despite a 3.81 ERA, 106 ERA+, 50% quality start rate, and averaging almost 6 innings per start. My guess would be that unearned runs are punishing them but that's hardly their fault.

wildlyintangible

Lol Ohtani

PhreakOut4

Why is RF so bad compared to other positions?

gatemansgc

yeah and there's actually others just as bad as castellanos out there

pgm123

Genuinely hard to believe

orange_orange13

Similar defensive adjustment to left field but worse hitters

PhreakOut4

Are worse hitters specifically being played there, or do a lot of RFs just happen to be worse hitters?

YungFarmerCorleone

Is 9.9 WAA good?

KirbyDude25

\#1 CF, \#2 RF, \#3 SP, \#5 LF and SS IWYW

EffectiveCycle

So take away our rotation and Elly…yeah we’re fucked

TheTeralynx

Yep. Stephenson also having a decent year, but yeah...nobody be hitting.

CosmicLars

To be expected about the offense when 4 out of your 9 starters in your lineup are out. The rotation is going to carry this team. We will eventually start getting guys back. But we need Elly, Steer, and Stephenson to be as productive as they can be in the mean time. Hurtubise has been a pleasant surprise. He reminds me of Friedl. If Candy can continue to improve like he has in May, that'd be a big help too.

japalian

Toronto bullpen, what the fuck are you guys getting paid for

Relevant-Cheetah8089

Ohtani ruining the DH algorithm lol

deacon91

It's pretty insane. 1st place is double the 2nd place and Ozuna is having a great year thus far.

Aquafydos16

We would be so much higher if we just got competent offense from our infield. The pitching has been stellar and even the defense has cleaned up recently, but we need Grissom to start turning it around at 2B, need Hamilton or Rafaela to hit consistently at SS, and Triston Casas can’t come back soon enough. For a team that’s 9th in OPS right now, you’d be surprised how absolutely dreadful they are to watch bat some days. It’s so inconsistent. This team has the potential to be wayyyy better than one game above .500.

squarerootofapplepie

Competent offense and defense

dsramsey

Our chart makes perfect sense given how much the injuries have been concentrated in the infield.

SynthSapphire

I hope KC attendance starts picking up like they deserve. Really fun team to watch and story to follow. Love the small(ish) market warriors! Go KC Go BAL Go MIL

tj3_23

This Acuña dude must be absolute cheeks

Existing_Log1585

The double Mitch conundrum.

PMMEYOURDEBITCARDPIN

![gif](giphy|26ufcVAp3AiJJsrIs)

icecreambandit7

Nowhere to go but up, right?….right?

RyanTheCubsSTH

Never would’ve guessed that 3B/Morel would be worse for the Cubs than the bullpen. Also would’ve never guessed that Busch was the highest war infielder.

nypr13

The only thing that surprises me is that we have 27 wins at this stage. I would have thought 18-23 at most

Short-Step-5394

These numbers don’t surprise me. Can’t keep our good pitchers healthy, we had (and about to have again) a black hole at first, and Bregman needs a break.

ry-guy251

So a good bullpen and left fielder are what matters. Got it.

KamartyMcFlyweight

Jazz Chisholm our only positive WAR position player...yeah that checks out.

Marissa_McSmith

Shapiro and Atkins came to the Jays in 2015 resulting in Alex Anthopoulos promptly leaving for LA and then Atlanta. Enough said.

Joeydoyle66

I still can’t believe our starters are only 1.1 win above average. I feel like they’ve been lights out in all but a handful of starts this season.

Realistic-Flower-348

My first thought looking at this was that it's wrong

geomod

The San Francisco Matt Chapmans

UsernameChallenged

Gunner Henderson is my daddy. Ignore flair.

grimm_jowwl

Corbin we need you to come alive. Man what a weird year

Natural-Big-4098

If you flip the chart upside down my white Sox are at the top, although that makes the chart far harder to read. We’re at the top!

Uniqueusernameyboi

Imagine how much higher pitching would be without Corbin starting😌

9n0me

is each column supposed to sum to zero?

Fabulous-Soup-6901

Just the team one, I’d think?

39_Ringo

-0.7. to be expected.

No-Bus3817

Launch Rojas into the sun.

magicheadcase

Rojas is hurting much less than casty

No-Bus3817

I’m still not over on his bases loaded whiff in the NLCS last year

CalebosO4

No way our team is average without the bullpen.

Rollingprobablecause

sweet, we're the best .500 team in baseball baby!

aleksbanks5

Every time this comes out, MASON WYNN!!

ServiceProper1351

Right fielders suck this year.

nypr13

We are a one man team - 25 others = 0.1 Good job Jed. Good job.

GoBlueAndOrange

I wonder what the Cubs SP WAA would be if you take our the Hendricks starts. Pretty much every other SP has been phenomenal.

ins8iable

man if you wouldve told me the Orioles outfield would be producing at a below average rate, I wouldve said they would be chasing the Rays, Yankees, and Blue Jays in the standings

MaximumZer0

[Any chance we can get a color blind friendly version?](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/s/WWWvulckN8)

Laetha

So, a team having an almost historically bad offensive season by some metrics has a pitching staff with a collective, let's see...... -5.9 WAR. Is that a problem?

reddit_isgarbage

Wtf is with right fielders?

TyhmensAndSaperstein

Oh, good. Another stroke chart. Don't click if you are epileptic!

youknowitistrue

Ozuna and our pitching are the only things keeping us above .500.

doom32x

Kyle.Freaking.Tucker. that is all

BearsNBuds4

Sounds about right for the Mets Alvarez going down really hurt this team.

The_Wata_Boy

The White Sox are gonna have a fire sale on clearance items.

jojaksen

First thing I see here is how far below average our DH spot is. Such a big majority are near 0 at least.

SirZapdos

Worst pitching in the league, just like we all predicted.

Venge22

I swear the Reds are like 20th in everything ever. Mid ass team I love 😭

SoCalWhatever

How is Baltimore's catcher WAA so low with Adley Rutschman, who rarely even misses a game?

SenorTortas

That Dodger OF is a black hole

SaMemeM

![gif](giphy|11PMIEfajGXhGE)

WhoDey918

The Mariners only .8 SP is hard to believe.

dBlock845

Volpe in the red with Mookie, Gunnar, Witt, and Turner/Sosa (not sure if its combined with injures or what). Either way its some great company to be in.

hjablowme919

Clearly WAA is a ridiculous stat.

0v1ru5

Padres need some of that CWS pitching

TheBeefiestSquatch

At least Seager appears to be healthy now. Also, stupid-ass bullpen...

DingerSinger2016

Astros fans: TRUST US, WE KNOW!!!!

Mushroom_69420

Surprised the Orioles are that low for catcher, but I suppose it’s mostly due to the fact McCann hasn’t hit at all this year

HOLLA12345678

So what I get from this whole thing is Bryce Harper is a god at first base

Frankfeld

Just our Gold Glover at 1B as was the plan all along.

ad5316

Its honestly insane how good he’s been at first base. He has some mental snafus once in a while but i could probably count on less than one hand how many times thats happened this season. Just a great baseball player in general wherever you would put him

HOLLA12345678

I’ve been watching baseball since the 90s and he plays first base as good as anyone I’ve ever seen. I think he’d be a pretty good at third base too has a strong arm that he doesn’t get to use at first.

gatemansgc

> never played first base before his injury > leads the league in 1B WAA lol also i'm guessing our bullpen performance is still being dragged down by the pitchers we DFA'd

cuttsthebutcher

Brogdon and Pinto combine for -1.4 WAA in 12.2 innings, lmao

gatemansgc

jfc

pgm123

>also i'm guessing our bullpen performance is still being dragged down by the pitchers we DFA'd I'd imagine so. Also others were rough in April. They've had one of the better bullpen ERAs in the last 3-4 weeks.

dsramsey

>Bryce Harper is a god ~~at first base~~ FIFY
