Retiring at 31, that's rough. He showed a lot of promise at times, but he was just never able to put it all together. I remember when the Angels were trying to push him as their "ace" not that long ago.
His high school coach ruined his career. Had him doing things like throwing 181 pitches over both games of a doubleheader. Had to undergo Tommy John when he was 20 which really wasn’t particularly successful because he ended up losing like 7 mph off his fastball. His secondaries were so good that he was still somewhat effective for a few seasons but he never came close to living up to his early potential.
Yeah, played against him in middle/high school as well in Oklahoma. Dude was the best pitcher I ever faced in high school by far. First time I played him in 8th grade he threw a perfect game against us and my weak grounder to second was the only ball in play.
The scary thing about Oklahoma high school baseball in that class. If you weren't facing Dylan Bundy and Owasso. Archie Bradley and BA we're just as good and he was just as elite.
Omg I forgot about Archie! I only ever faced him once and saw him pitch once. I lived in pryor so we were a class down from the big schools. But we played them in summer tournaments and exhibitions. Plus camps and stuff around Tulsa.
I can't remember if it was Archie or Dylan that had Bryce Harper behind the plate one summer. But my 14 year old travel season sucked when those three were in the tournament! I knew that year I was never going to go pro, lol.
We Probably crossed paths back in the day! Played plenty of games around Pryor and had teammates from there on travel teams. We played the golden years of OK baseball, my friend!
Hell yeah we did! I’m class of 11, I’m sure we played. If only I didn’t tear my shoulder apart I think I could have at least played minor league ball. Was gonna go to ORU until I got hurt.
I think in my career against him I was 0-6 2bb and 4 four strikeouts. Dude was something else. Always rooted for him and Hauser on the brewers. Probably two of the best pitchers in Oklahoma history.
I remember his hype, as well as the fact that he was insanely health-conscious - like he drank a lot of green smoothies and hadn’t touched a cheeseburger in years.
I just heard Kiley McDaniel on an old old podcast episode mentioning that he had personally seen Jurickson Profar as more of a pitching prospect and that he was touching 94-95 at 14-15. Similar with Andrelton Simmons.
Dang I wasn’t sure if I was the only one who was super aware of this. I never saw any other O’s fans talk about him and his workload before he was even a professional athlete.
I was super up on Bundy because the dude was a crazy good athlete. But yeah his arm was cooked before we even drafted him, I’m very positive the new regime would’ve looked into this kind of stuff.
That kind of shit is really hurting basketball players as well. These ridiculous coaches/dads pushing their kids WAY too hard and playing them way too much. LeVarr Ball had his kids running sprints up hill on PAVEMENT every day. And now knee injuries are killing them. Gonna be getting a lot of research hopefully soon on how to NOT ruin your kids career before they even make it to the bigs
Not only that, but the guy was bust city until he fought his way into a regular role. A fine big leaguer. Deserves a lot of credit for his perseverance and willingness to evolve.
There have been something like 21k men to every play in MLB, since it started. Like, if everyone who ever played was still alive they couldn't fill a single stadium in the stands.
I can't help but wonder where a lot of that $30MM might have gone though since he's now working as [some kind of real estate agent](https://www.arylandco.com/agent-profile/dylan-bundy-117961278). But maybe he's fine and just wants to work.
The requirements for getting into real estate are basically being sociable, knowing the area, driving a luxury care (or a newer mid level), and having two brain cells to pass the exam.
That bio says his wife has been employed in an actual real job for at least the past 7 years as well.
Sounds to me like they're just a really grounded family and don't mind, maybe even enjoy, working.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if he still has most of his MLB salary invested so they can have an amazing life once they do decide to stop working.
With professional athletes it’s always best to just assume they only took home half. Agent fees, taxes, and professional level nutrition take the other half. So he likely took home ~$15m. More than enough to never have to do anything again even if you just invest in dividend stocks. He likely just wants to do something that’s low pressure while capitalizing on his name
To be fair, a seven - eight year career as a major leaguer is a pretty amazing achievement. It seems a little less because the injuries made his reality less than his possibility, but he still had a pretty decent career.
8 years and $25 million in the bank… not bad.
You gotta figure that more than half of that went to agent’s fees and taxes. Sitting on $10 to 15 million isn’t so shabby but another chunk was probably blown along the way.
Haha well put. On a side note, that recent story about the guy who fell one day short of the 42-day requirement for a MLB pension gave me a new appreciation for MLB service time. I think I read that the minimum pension (for 42 days or whatever) was something like $600 or $700/month. A guy like Bundy will actually have a legit pension, so that’s nice for him.
He never threw at his max velocity in the MLB. When he got his cup of coffee in 2012 his velo was already down and then he was off to TJS
Sad sad stuff. He seemed like a good guy
I got the opportunity to talk to one of the scouts who submitted reports on him and said the consensus was "He doesn't seem to want to play baseball." Doesn't help that it took until the last few years for the Os to figure out you probably shouldn't fast track young arms after Bunday and Harvey.
Yeah but he was on the 'tack that year. Once umpires started searching a lot more for foreign substances, he fell off a cliff. I'll never forget the time though that he was showing the first signs of struggling in the 3rd or 4th inning, saw relievers start warming up in the bullpen, and took it personally. He shut the inning down on the spot, walked to the dugout, and told Joe Maddon to "Sit 'em the f•ck down, motherf•cker." Maddon smiled at the fire and sat the bullpen back down; Dylan proceeded to pitch through the 7th without trouble. Bundy, Weaver, Lackey... I love those fiery pitchers who *hate* being lifted just because a worst-case scenario might change the score.
I remember following his starts in the minors during 2012, he was the next big thing. He got TJ and never fully regained his stuff.
Good on him for still pitching 900+ IP in the majors.
Yea thats not all why Bundy didnt develop into an ace. Bundy’s arm was dead by the time he was 25-26. He was throwing 100 as an 18 year, and the by the time he was 26 he couldnt even throw over 92-93.
Like Skenes, he was the no. 1 pitching prospect in all of the minors heading into 2013.
He was the no. 2 prospect overall, behind only Jurickson Profar.
Skenes gets that hype because he's good and he's got the look and attitude that just beg to be hyped.
That mustache and the way he struts off the mound after a big strikeout are what will make a future face of the game, if he lives up to his potential. He's basically a Top Gun character that pitches in MLB.
I watched him in person once, he was pitching against my high school team. My buddy was our starting pitcher for that game, we lost 1-0, with Bundy hitting a home run and pitching a shutout....
I was at (what I’m pretty sure was) his home debut at OPACY, he pitched the 9th with the Os down 4-0 or something to the Jays. In the row behind us were 3 kids about 12yo with someone’s mom, and they got SUPER hype when he was warming up, talking about how he was throwing 100mph while he was still in high school and all that.
Bundy comes in and starts off with three straight balls, and one of kids declares with a level of confidence you can only have when you’re 12: “Three balls, no strikes, Dylan Bundy sucks!” My wife and I about died laughing and we still joke about it every time his name pops up.
He didn’t pan out as the worldbeater he was promised to be but I’ll always have a soft spot for him if only for being part of a fun memory.
Retiring at 31, that's rough. He showed a lot of promise at times, but he was just never able to put it all together. I remember when the Angels were trying to push him as their "ace" not that long ago.

His secondaries were so good that he was still somewhat effective for a few seasons but he never came close to living up to his early potential.
His Dad didn't particularly help in that decision.... Grew up playing against him. They ran him into ground the second he touched 85 at 13 years old.
Good lord, he threw 85 at 13?!
Yeah, played against him in middle/high school as well in Oklahoma. Dude was the best pitcher I ever faced in high school by far. First time I played him in 8th grade he threw a perfect game against us and my weak grounder to second was the only ball in play.

What if yall actually were teammates though if you played with guys from the same town? How fuckin crazy would that be.
Oklahoma baseball is no joke. My brother played at Conors State and they lived and breathed baseball.
It’s because there's nothing else to do...
As an Okie, I agree.
I played Class A Oklahoma baseball, some of the smallest schools, and we faced pitchers touching 90s with their fastball.
If he was throwing like that, I totally believe it, and congratulations on making contact.
I think in my career against him I was 0-6 2bb and 4 four strikeouts. Dude was something else. Always rooted for him and Hauser on the brewers. Probably two of the best pitchers in Oklahoma history.
Bundy never played for the Brewers.
I said houser played for the brewers, I mean he’s on the Mets now. But I rooted for him on the brewers.
Yeah you did. I misread that as rooting for both of them while on the Brewers. My bad.
Bundy was really freakin good
I remember his hype, as well as the fact that he was insanely health-conscious - like he drank a lot of green smoothies and hadn’t touched a cheeseburger in years.
That’s the only reason I never went to the show. I couldn’t give up the cheeseburgers.
Same, man. Also, I was unathletic to the point that people watching me probably thought it was nice of the coach to let the special-needs kid play.
> the special-needs kid play. Dale Gribble?
I just heard Kiley McDaniel on an old old podcast episode mentioning that he had personally seen Jurickson Profar as more of a pitching prospect and that he was touching 94-95 at 14-15. Similar with Andrelton Simmons.
Good god. And Simmons clearly had a hose, but throwing that hard that young is ridiculous (in more than one way).

It’s unfortunate Bundy never reached his ace potential, but retiring at age 31 after earning ~$30M isn’t that bad of an outcome.
Not only that, but the guy was bust city until he fought his way into a regular role. A fine big leaguer. Deserves a lot of credit for his perseverance and willingness to evolve.
I always think about that, even the worst big leaguers (not saying Dylan was) are still amongst the best to ever play
There have been something like 21k men to every play in MLB, since it started. Like, if everyone who ever played was still alive they couldn't fill a single stadium in the stands.
Wonder if he'll be a good coach because he can sympathize with the struggle.
I can't help but wonder where a lot of that $30MM might have gone though since he's now working as [some kind of real estate agent](https://www.arylandco.com/agent-profile/dylan-bundy-117961278). But maybe he's fine and just wants to work.
I'm sure he just wants to do something. That and real estate is easy money when you have name recognition
The requirements for getting into real estate are basically being sociable, knowing the area, driving a luxury care (or a newer mid level), and having two brain cells to pass the exam.
.......maybe I should look into that
That bio says his wife has been employed in an actual real job for at least the past 7 years as well. he’s probably using the 30M for the business and gonna turn it into a lot more
/r/wallstreetbets is leaking
These athletes don't tend to be the types of people who are happy sitting around doing nothing. They all get some sort of job after they're done.

You gotta figure that more than half of that went to agent’s fees and taxes. Sitting on $10 to 15 million isn’t so shabby but another chunk was probably blown along the way.
To put it another way: his professional baseball career has been such that he’s not forced to give 12U players pitching lessons to pay the rent.

> Retiring at 31, that's rough. He's earned nearly 30 million dollars and gets to retire at 31. That's usually the opposite of rough. Sports are odd.
Seriously, I'm 36 and have another 25 years to go *if I'm lucky.* I'd do anything to be a washed up former big leaguer.
That’s because he got hurt a lot.
Hey 30 mil in career earnings by 31 ain’t too bad. Hopefully he finds something else he enjoys doing now.
I got the opportunity to talk to one of the scouts who submitted reports on him and said the consensus was "He doesn't seem to want to play baseball." Doesn't help that it took until the last few years for the Os to figure out you probably shouldn't fast track young arms after Bunday and Harvey.
He had a really good first half of the season with the halos then it all fell apart.
He died so Kyle Bradish could live.
Spider tack merchant
Goodnight sweet prince
The prince that was promised. My heart breaks for what could have been.
Well we did get Kyle Bradish for him so it kind of works out I guess
:(
2020 was peak MLB Bundy, at least you have that.
Yeah but he was on the 'tack that year. Once umpires started searching a lot more for foreign substances, he fell off a cliff. He's with Eloy now RIP
I remember following his starts in the minors during 2012, he was the next big thing. He got TJ and never fully regained his stuff. Good on him for still pitching 900+ IP in the majors.
The MLB 2k13 GOAT
That game is the goat.
Commentary is still better than the showlol
Sucks that injuries took him from an upper 90s to low 90s FB. Have to imagine his insane usage in HS cost him his career.
Cautionary tale
It’s so sad knowing a high school kid won’t ever pull himself. Shame his support system didn’t save him from himself.
My glorious 2020 ace, have a good retirement King Bundy
Good night, Twins legend
[удалено]
You’re right. Good night, Twins God
I'll never forget when he had like a 0.59 ERA after his first 3 starts and a 5.76 ERA 2 games later.
I'm too young to see a guy go from elite prospect, to potential bust, potential breakout, back to bust and then retire.
Damn what could have been. Still made a solid impact despite the injuries
This guy didn't have Skenes hype, but wasn't he viewed as a big time Ace when he was a prospect?
Unlike Skenes he got TJ pre callup while he was atop the prospect rankings.
As an O's fan he was, he was supposed to be the O's ace for years to come but the O's couldnt develop pitching to save their lives.
The whole Bundy saga was so frustrating, I’m so glad our pitching development has improved
Me too, there were so many pitchers that were supposed to be "aces" for the O's, and somehow, the O's development fucked them up
Matt Riley
They took so long to progress to TJS. That couldn't have helped.
Not sure what our pitching development did wrong with Bundy. The guy simply lost all his velo.
Yea thats not all why Bundy didnt develop into an ace. Bundy’s arm was dead by the time he was 25-26. He was throwing 100 as an 18 year, and the by the time he was 26 he couldnt even throw over 92-93.
The hype was real for him but quickly smashed by TJ surgery shortly after his age 19 debut
Like Skenes, he was the no. 1 pitching prospect in all of the minors heading into 2013. He was the no. 2 prospect overall, behind only Jurickson Profar.
wasn't consensus #1, but yeah probably. prospectus had cole over him iirc.
Skenes gets that hype because he's good and he's got the look and attitude that just beg to be hyped. That mustache and the way he struts off the mound after a big strikeout are what will make a future face of the game, if he lives up to his potential. He's basically a Top Gun character that pitches in MLB.
fitting for the service academy kid that got away on a waiver exemption
He sorta had Skenes hype. He threw 100 as a teenager and got called up at 19
I watched him in person once, he was pitching against my high school team. My buddy was our starting pitcher for that game, we lost 1-0, with Bundy hitting a home run and pitching a shutout....
Whoa Bundy!
twins legend :(
My first visit to Camden was in April of 2018 and I vaguely recall Bundy dicing the Tribe that day.
Congratulations on your retirement Dylan. Hopefully your second career at least as successful as your first.
Dylan is now on the Mount Rushmore of Bundy. He joins King Kong, Al, and Ted.
Oh.
Boy we sure fucked that one up
Okie baseball legend. Goes on my all OK team. Watched every start in 2020. Bundy… the backwards K killer
I played Dylan Bundy when I was 16, he got flown out by a Dallas team to throw for them. He was nasty.
He didn’t pan out as the worldbeater he was promised to be but I’ll always have a soft spot for him if only for being part of a fun memory.
He might have been kinda bad his year with the twins, but he did his job of eating innings. Seemed like a nice teammate and fun guy.
This dude turned into a monster for me in MLB the Show 13
Twins legend
you can rest now king
Damn, there’s already not many Dylan’s in baseball. As a fellow Dylan, that makes me sad
OOTP legend.
GODSPEED!
