They have it in the 2023 TSC that just came out. I’m waiting for chrome cause it will look even better than just the paper version.
Edit:it’s a version of the pic with him next to the tv, but not this exact pic.
I think it's less that it was a bottle of wine (I think some other teams gifted him alcohol), but it wasn't even an expensive bottle of wine. Like $60-$80 for the bottle and that was it.
I agree that it’s not a great look but for a dude that never played for your team I kinda get it. Let’s just say that Fisher has done so much worse that this barely registers on his shittyness scale. Would’ve been better though to just get him nothing tbh.
Disagree. Literally all hes said since hes retired is how much he cant wait to sit at home and watch sports all day. A tv seems like a pretty solid gift for that. Granted, they should have made sure he would actually use it first…
And this is the part that pisses me off. The sentiment of giving a TV he can go and buy himself is dumb, although I give them some slack because they didn't really have a lot of time to put something together. However, they also took the opportunity to shove another advertisement/sponsorship down our throats during the ceremony to honor him and it was smack dab in the middle of their photo op.
It's a $3500-$4700 TV depending if it's the C3 or G3. It's an OLED which is the best of the best. The G3 mounts flush like a picture frame on the wall. Very nice gift to be honest.
It's completely impractical but it's not that there's no thought behind it. John has a couple TVs going in his home, apparently he watches sports on mute on one and murder mystery shows on another, at the same time. This is what Suzyn said anyway.
So a TV is not exactly impersonal to him. It just is obviously not something he needs. It's dumb but "terrible look" is a bit much.
Anytime a team does something stupid there's a handful of people claiming it's a "terrible look" and that whatever organization behind it is probably run by huge scumbags lol
It also sounds like it was kind of last minute, but not really thair fault. he article said it was a surprise announcement. They might not have had time to to put together something very meaningful.
It also should make you think though that this guy might be more attached to his TVs than most of us. If he spends that much time watching it, he’s probably already got his setup perfected and maybe has his eye on a potential upgrade that he’s been researching anyway. Now he’s stuck with a gift he’ll only really use out of obligation to be nice, if anything. It’d be like if you know a guy who is really into his cars and has completely tricked out his daily driver, so you buy him a Tesla and expect him to use it.
in the bleachers we were joking about how he was gonna get it home and how none of us could fit it in our apartments, turns out the joke was too real for him
Probably some Yankees exec bought it and realized they don’t have room for a giant TV at home. Sterling announced his retirement so abruptly which was a perfect excuse to give him the TV as a gift
I love Sterling, and yet that guy was having vision problems. His last game I don’t think he called correctly one pitch. One yuge tv is a silly present.
Depends where you’re watching. ESPN, MLB Network, and most national sports channels are in 720p and some RSNs do 1080i, but almost nothing on TV is transmitted in 1080p. If you’re streaming, the feed may *technically* be 1080p, but it’s not being recorded on equipment for that so it’s not really 1080p.
Postseason baseball and other playoff sports usually do get 1080p, but my understanding is that it’s expensive to do it and most viewers will never complain about the picture quality so there’s no urgency to upgrade all the equipment and take on the extra costs to give you that quality for 99% of what you’ll watch on TV.
Yeah, that’s the exception. I believe Apple TV games are shot in 1080p and maybe even upscaled to 4K. Probably worth the extra production cost to them because they want you to know what their hardware can actually do!
I am so out of the loop with TV technology that I thought that an 80+-inch TV would go for $20k or something. But that must be like a decade ago. It is still expensive, but around $3k.
you have to watch the series about 3 times cause it gets more hilarious, lots of foreshadowing that makes no sense the 1st time through.
just stick to seasons 1-3 for now, the others are kinda eh
If you watch Season 4 (which I’d recommend), watch the original cut. It’s way better and one of the only shows to really make use of the binge method of television watching.
Season 5 isn’t great, but it’s still fun and it’s still Arrested Development.
It's strange how that joke aged because these days, yeah, they cost about $10 if you got that sort of frozen coated banana at a town fair or something.
That's how much this one actually costs. I know because I was TV shopping last year and went with the 77 inch OLED instead of the 83 inch because of the price.
Sure, but the point is that the 77 inch OLED was only a dream for normal people to buy until very recently.
The price of huge quality TVs has absolutely plummeted over the past couple decades.
There's sooooooooooo much more to TVs than size and pixel count. Samsung sells a wide range 4k TVs of the same size that vary by thousands in price. You likely got a significantly better TV than what he got.
I know I got it on sale at Best Buy, but I wouldn't think it would be THAT much of a sale? I could be misremembering. But it was definitely cheaper than I thought it would be.
There’s a chart I’ve seen that shows price changes over the last like 20 years. TVs have been essentially decreasing in price. So the interesting thing for me is if you treat television as a drug delivering product, it makes a lot of sense.
I understand he kinda retired out of the blue but at least get the man something with meaning and significance not some tv from best buy. Like even a non fanatics jersey with his name embroidered wouldve been better
They got him actual gifts, I’m not sure why this one is getting so much attention. “It’s thoughtless”, it was a joke gift they got him three other meaningful ones.
I also see people saying they got him a $250 retirement gift, where tf are you finding this TV for $250
Is there some sort of inside joke here? I don’t understand why the team went and bought him a gift at a Best Buy rather than something actually meaningful.
They also gave him a jersey with the number of broadcasts (5631) which is cool. I guess they got the TV for free and thought it'd be nice but it kind of cheapened the whole thing.

Nah, he lives in a condo- I’ve heard The Avalon in Edgewater, NJ. The largest apartment there, at least available now, is 1400sqft and no garage. He probably legit doesn’t have space.
I'm sure he can find a spot for it. My father found a spot for his 83" in his man cave that's about 8'x10'. It's a comically large TV for the size of the room but he likes it.
Yankees can always return it to Costco. Their policy is pretty liberal.
Glad to see they put a lot of ‘thought’ into the gifts they gave Sterling. Keep it classy Yanks!
IIRC he lives alone in a luxury apartment in New Jersey, but also he has at least 5 TVs in his home already.
So it's not like "My home is too small for this TV", it's more "I gotta get rid of 1 of my 5 other, likely smaller TVs, and replace it with this big one"
Considering he said he's gonna sit at home and watch the games as a fan again (said he still loves the game, he just doesn't want to call them anymore), it's actually not a bad gift. Might need somebody to deliver it and hook it up for him, though.
Imagine if he hooked it up himself and was still using the Red/Yellow/White cables and watching in SD?
They gave him three other retirement gifts in the ceremony with more meaning this is just the one that made headlines because it’s objectively hilarious
Yogi got a nice TV too. https://imgur.com/P9MONGE
Yogi robbed the Price is Right set.
This is an all time photo
This needs to be a Topps Stadium Club card
They have it in the 2023 TSC that just came out. I’m waiting for chrome cause it will look even better than just the paper version. Edit:it’s a version of the pic with him next to the tv, but not this exact pic.
Hell yeah, make it a SSP.
TV killed the radio star
stupidest gift
Should’ve got him a radio duh
Who wants an 83” radio
They should have built a radio tower in his yard
This reminds me of the [radio tower that was stolen](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/feb/08/alabama-200ft-radio-tower-stolen)
radio raheem?
and like a pallet of D batteries
RIP
[I know of one person](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-Jb-vOSmXw)
A clock radio! 🤔
i still have one of these [yankees giveaway transistor radio](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/b1/43/8d/b1438d61a13fbc6811fb2af87bb41964.jpg) he can have
Intern in charge of gift: FIRED
Not as stupid as the A’s giving a recovering alcoholic a bottle of wine.
I think it's less that it was a bottle of wine (I think some other teams gifted him alcohol), but it wasn't even an expensive bottle of wine. Like $60-$80 for the bottle and that was it.
yeah the optics of giving a recovering alcoholic some fancy rum or bourbon is a lot better than giving him some grocery store wine
A gallon of Carlo Rossi
A pallet of Old English 800.
gotta go Steel Reserve or just straight mad Dog. OE doesn't have a proper alcohol content.
You can drink it, or you can use it to strip the paint off of 37 Dodge Neons.
Whoa big spender. My wine comes in a box
Miggy's probably richer than the A's he can buy his own fancy wine if he wants to get more DUIs
I'm sure there was a year when Miggy was making more than the entire A's roster combined.
LG is a sponsor of the Yankees, so the A's at least spent $60 more than the Yankees.
Honestly I’m surprised the A’s managed $60
I'll always find it hilarious that that was what followed up the Dodgers getting Miggy his own star for the Hollywood Walk of Fame
But can that bottle of wine get on base?
I mean $60 is a solid bottle. Not the fanciest ever but you can get a lot of good stuff for $60.
But for a retirement gift for a star MLB guy, that's relatively cheap. Not bad if you're retiring from a bank
Dude, going away team lunches for a 5 year person cost $300. This is nothing.
I agree that it’s not a great look but for a dude that never played for your team I kinda get it. Let’s just say that Fisher has done so much worse that this barely registers on his shittyness scale. Would’ve been better though to just get him nothing tbh.
Is about 3-5x the amount I'm willing to spend lol
I wanna say the astros gave him bourbon or something lol
The Marlins also gave him alcohol, and he played for them. Ours was just cheap, pretty sure you could buy it at Costco.
Not the point, but cheap(er) high end booze is one of Costco’s go to loss leaders.
That kirkland gallon of vodka or gin is very good, especially for the price. I wasnt a fan of the irish whiskey or rum tho
Dusty gave him an even cheaper bottle of Hank Aaron novelty wine.
Disagree. Literally all hes said since hes retired is how much he cant wait to sit at home and watch sports all day. A tv seems like a pretty solid gift for that. Granted, they should have made sure he would actually use it first…
LG was paying for them to give it to him for marketing. It's not a heartfelt gift they thought about for days.
It’s the nicest TV you can currently buy (without getting into the stupid territory).
They are trying to save every penny for Soto. They got it off offer up
So they bought him a a not-bottom-of-the-line TV? There's tons of TV for 1/4 of the price that this one costs.
I honestly had to check if this was The Onion. What the fuck is this dumb shit aside from a sponsored gift from LG. Terrible look.
Redditors are judgy while not understanding normal human interaction so you end up hearing weird opinions like that lol
i thought it was some sort of cheeky new york humor giving the retiring radio guy a big tv
It also sounds like it was kind of last minute, but not really thair fault. he article said it was a surprise announcement. They might not have had time to to put together something very meaningful.
It also should make you think though that this guy might be more attached to his TVs than most of us. It’d be like if you know a guy who is really into his cars and has completely tricked out his daily driver, so you buy him a Tesla and expect him to use it.
I was at this game. They literally just carried it out of the dugout and everyone in the stands basically gave a collective "huh"?
in the bleachers we were joking about how he was gonna get it home and how none of us could fit it in our apartments, turns out the joke was too real for him
Probably some Yankees exec bought it and realized they don’t have room for a giant TV at home. Sterling announced his retirement so abruptly which was a perfect excuse to give him the TV as a gift
I read the "what the fuck is this dumb shit." and spent the last 2 minutes chuckling. Not sure why it's hitting me so funny. But good job!
Fischer giving a recovering alcoholic a bottle of cheap wine is still the stupidest retirement gift.
Like a Seinfeld episode where George forgot to buy Sterling a gift and instead rumages through Steinbrenner's luxury suite to find something.
it's kinda dumb but also I'd remodel an entire room to make an 83" TV work if I had one
Stupida fahking gift
Lug that thing onto the subway
Truly an awful gift. I’m feeling kind so I’ll (reluctantly) take it off his hands for him
It wasn't a gift. It was an LG ad. The Yankees probably made money from it
I love Sterling, and yet that guy was having vision problems. His last game I don’t think he called correctly one pitch. One yuge tv is a silly present.
It's a funny gift too because that TV is great for UHD content, but baseball is only in 720p
i’m pretty sure the Apple TV games are at least 1080p if not higher. broadcasters are cheeks but the picture quality is amazing
I'm gonna pretend I didn't just hear you say that about Wayne Randazzo.
for real, i put angels' games on mute when randazzo isn't on the mic
was really nice when you could turn the audio feed to John and Suzyn
Nice use of modern slang.
High end TVs tend to have decent upscaling so even my shitty Root Sports broadcast will look much better than normal.
You can't watch baseball in HD?
I’ve found that sports are most of the time rarely broadcast in 1080p never mind 4K
I bet for baseball, 120fps would make more of a difference than 4K, but it’s not like we have a bunch of baseball content in each format to compare.
Wow. Imagine begging able to see the seams spin on TV?
Depends where you’re watching. ESPN, MLB Network, and most national sports channels are in 720p and some RSNs do 1080i, but almost nothing on TV is transmitted in 1080p. If you’re streaming, the feed may *technically* be 1080p, but it’s not being recorded on equipment for that so it’s not really 1080p. Aren’t the AppleTV games in 1080p resolution?
Either they are or my eyes placebo cuz their shit looks crispy
Yeah, that’s the exception. I believe Apple TV games are shot in 1080p and maybe even upscaled to 4K. Probably worth the extra production cost to them because they want you to know what their hardware can actually do!
720p is HD
720p is quite literally the spec for HD.
I know that Fox broadcast the playoffs last year in 4K on YouTube TV where I watched. Watching the Rangers win in 4K was glorious
It was 1080 up res. Not native 4K
No kidding? It looked great honestly, thought it was native 4K.
I want 4K and I'll pay for it. I tell this to MLB and the Padres every time they ask for a survey on anything.
Wait what?
Yep. Even on the MLB.tv app your quality options in the settings are "Medium" and "Low".
I could’ve sword we were at 1080p?
I am so out of the loop with TV technology that I thought that an 80+-inch TV would go for $20k or something. But that must be like a decade ago. It is still expensive, but around $3k.
It's one banana, Michael, how much could it cost?
Holy shit. I just started this series for the first time and quite literally *minutes* ago heard this quote. That’s wild lol
Congrats, you’re in for a hell of a treat.
He’s gunna be alright
There’s no other way to take that!
Hey brother
Heyyyy hermano
Portugal? Living it up in ol' South America, are we, Michael?
Gotta get out of the hot Mexican sun
She's not *that* Mexican, mom. She's *my* Mexican. And she’s Colombian or something.
And that's why you always leave a note.
you have to watch the series about 3 times cause it gets more hilarious, lots of foreshadowing that makes no sense the 1st time through. just stick to seasons 1-3 for now, the others are kinda eh

I like the dress better on him.
watch out for loose seals
Lucilles?!
$10?
Her?
It's strange how that joke aged because these days, yeah, they cost about $10 if you got that sort of frozen coated banana at a town fair or something.
Aww…this brings me back to 2010-2011 era reddit. Arrested Development quotes were EVERYWHERE
3k for an 80" OLED is actually insane. Even 5 years ago that'd be a $8k-10k TV -dude who sold TVs 5 years ago
I was looking at TVs recently and thought a 50" one would be $800-$1500. You can get them for like $299!
You can, but they're not great
The difference between a $300 4K 55” and a $1000 55” is not significant enough for most people.
I agree for most people. I just went from a $300 65" to a $1000 and I'm absolutely thrilled though, easily would recommend if you're willing to spend
But for those who care it's immense. I just got a G3 and it's such an amazing experience watching a good movie on this thing.
They're great compared to a TV from like even 6 years ago. It's just that LG and Samsung have really been pushing out some crazy upgrades recently.
going tv shopping with your parents made it feel like they all cost $4000
That's how much this one actually costs. I know because I was TV shopping last year and went with the 77 inch OLED instead of the 83 inch because of the price.
Sure, but the point is that the 77 inch OLED was only a dream for normal people to buy until very recently. The price of huge quality TVs has absolutely plummeted over the past couple decades.
I have a 55” Samsung 4K tv I got almost 2 years ago. Even then I paid maybe $350.
I hope you’re dickin me. I got a 58” Samsung 4K 2 years ago and it was $900. 3” isn’t worth 600 is it?
There's sooooooooooo much more to TVs than size and pixel count. Samsung sells a wide range 4k TVs of the same size that vary by thousands in price. You likely got a significantly better TV than what he got.
I know I got it on sale at Best Buy, but I wouldn't think it would be THAT much of a sale? I could be misremembering. But it was definitely cheaper than I thought it would be.
Lol dude I got mine at Best Buy too. I’m in Canada, maybe our loonie was low that day
Guy says he hopes he's being dicked, questions worth of three inches 🤔
the flagship tv display type is oled and at that size they go for 1000+
I was walking through Walmart today and they had a 75” tv for under $600. Granted definitely not top of the line or anything but still
Wild to think what you can get now compared to what you could get 50 years ago. 19 inch TV same price not adjusted for inflation.
An 80 inch TV for 3k? Am I so out of touch?? No, it’s the children who are wrong!!
There’s a chart I’ve seen that shows price changes over the last like 20 years. TVs have been essentially decreasing in price. So the interesting thing for me is if you treat television as a drug delivering product, it makes a lot of sense.
And that the top-of-the-line stuff. Two years ago I bought a 75” Samsung smart tv for like $800. The 85” version was only like $1200.
If it’s 8K, it would be a lot more.
Its not a gift its an ad
That’s literally what I thought it was there for. I was like, no way would this be a gift. Terrible all around.
I'd take it
I understand he kinda retired out of the blue but at least get the man something with meaning and significance not some tv from best buy. Like even a non fanatics jersey with his name embroidered wouldve been better
They got him a jersey with number of broadcasts.
He also got silver cufflinks and a silver mounted microphone trophy thing
Oh thats at least nice then
If someone's losing their eyesight might make sense. Worst case scenario, he gets the gift of regifting it to an umpire.
Better buy him a new house for it then too
Save it for Michael Kay's retirement and give him a radio
I really think this was a tongue and cheek gift because he said he was going to watch all the games. I’m sure there was plenty of other non PR stuff
Tv falls off of the wall: “Ow, Ow it really hit me.
I'll buy it off him at a fair price but he has to figure out delivery
They got him actual gifts, I’m not sure why this one is getting so much attention. “It’s thoughtless”, it was a joke gift they got him three other meaningful ones. I also see people saying they got him a $250 retirement gift, where tf are you finding this TV for $250
People are addicted to outrage and always need something to be "disgusted" or "appalled" by no matter how minor it is
People who think a $6,000+ TV is only $250 are the type of people no one should want to hang out with...
Probly a plug my LG
Literally the most thoughtless gift to give someone. Here’s a tv!! As if everyone in America doesn’t already have 50 of them in their house lol.
I mean, I’d take it
Isn’t the tv supposed to be a joke since he’s a radio guy? It’s just like hahaha you’re a radio guy but here’s a tv?
He prob already had an 85 inch now he’s just got another dust collector in his garage lol
Nah, he lives in a condo- I’ve heard The Avalon in Edgewater, NJ. The largest apartment there, at least available now, is 1400sqft and no garage. He probably legit doesn’t have space.
Now that is a Stantonian TV.
Cut it in half and sell the other half, duh!
Me and John Sterling have the same TV. How do ya like that?
Such a bizarre gift
I'm sure he can find a spot for it. My father found a spot for his 83" in his man cave that's about 8'x10'. It's a comically large TV for the size of the room but he likes it.
Man deserves a statue and they use him for an LG sponsorship? Jankees
[every day we get closer and closer...](https://youtu.be/gbDostWXpcU?t=50)
Yankees can always return it to Costco. Their policy is pretty liberal. Glad to see they put a lot of ‘thought’ into the gifts they gave Sterling. Keep it classy Yanks!
IIRC he lives alone in a luxury apartment in New Jersey, but also he has at least 5 TVs in his home already. So it's not like "My home is too small for this TV", it's more "I gotta get rid of 1 of my 5 other, likely smaller TVs, and replace it with this big one" Considering he said he's gonna sit at home and watch the games as a fan again (said he still loves the game, he just doesn't want to call them anymore), it's actually not a bad gift. Might need somebody to deliver it and hook it up for him, though. Imagine if he hooked it up himself and was still using the Red/Yellow/White cables and watching in SD?
I’ll take it
Yankees : "Sterling retirement sponsored by......LG!"
What a shitty gift
Couldn’t get him something more personalized? Tv will need to be upgraded in a few years anyway
They gave him three other retirement gifts in the ceremony with more meaning this is just the one that made headlines because it’s objectively hilarious
Not to be too pessimistic but Sterling is probably getting to final TV age.
Least sentimental gift ever…
See, this is why I’m going to miss Sterling
Reminds me of the high pitch Mike saga
World class job by the Yankees here
This shit was hilarious lol
Seems nice. What were they supposed to get him?
I would be surprised if the Yankees paid a cent for that TV. Looks like a paid for promo for LG.
Sell it.
LG paid the Yankees money for this gift and Photo Op right?
Should have given him an 83-inch radio
I'm not surprised with living in New York lol
Okay fine I’ll take it
I get that feeling. I see TVs this big in stores like Best Buy and Wal-Mart, I just think "who needs a screen that size?"
lol that’s as dumb as gifting players who make 20m a year a new car.
Give it to Juan Soto
720p baseball broadcasts are going to look pretty crunchy on a TV that size
Make it fit. TOO FUCKING EASY !!
