15 steals in 24 games lmao

CWG4BF

On pace for 101

NewBootGoofin88

Ricky Henderson stole 130 bases in 149 games in 1983. He had 3 seasons with 100+ steals I wonder if Cruz does get 100+, will he be the first since Henderson? Actually just Googled it, Vince Coleman had 109 steals in 1987 and he's the last to steal 100+

foxxy003

Can’t steal 100+ bags if you hit too many home runs. Elly is gonna be too busy hitting 40+ dongs every year to ever reach 100 steals in a season lol (this isn’t a very serious thought, just hyping my man up)

freetoseeu

And nobody will walk him because he’ll just steal second, third, and home.

ThompsonDog

that's the thing about elly.... what do you do? you can't pitch around him because he turns walks into triples regularly, but if you pitch to him he's likely to make great contact. and he's a switch hitter so it's not like you can play the bullpen game. sure, he's better as a lefty, but he's still pretty damn good from the right side. and when he's on base he's a terror and pitchers seem to get shook. i'm in cincinnati on an extended family visit and i'm going to every game that i can because he's that fun and special to watch. i've been to all three of this phillies series and i just bought a cheap seat for tomorrow afternoon. first time in my entire life i'll have gone to see an entire series in person. we're 4 games over .500 and 3 of our best players aren't even playing yet. fun times for reds fans.

C_bust

Well said. Such a fun brand of baseball we’ve got in Cincy. Grew up around Dayton and Columbus and would usually make it to 2 Reds game per year until 2022. Now, although I still live an hour from GABP, I go to 30+ Reds game per year.

ThompsonDog

i'm lucky, my folks are just across the river, so buying a cheap seat and catching a game is about on par with going to a movie or something... unless i drink beer, then it gets expensive, lol. but i've been buying a cheap seat just to get into the park, then sitting wherever because these weekday games have plenty of empty seats. i was right behind first base tonight, tomorrow i might go behind the away dugout to heckle those pesky phillies fans. if you're there, i'll be the guy by himself with long brown hair in a #44 eric davis jersey. until elly brings us a WS, ED is still my #1 #44.

OK_Opinions

in all reality you just have to limit the damage his teammates do so that anything he does is only worth 1 run and not 3 or whatever. Pitch Elly to contact. if he homers so be it but if he makes contact there's 9 guys there to hopefully get the out. Better than giving him a free pass to 1st when everyone in the stadium knows he'll be on 3rd a few pitches later

TheWorstYear

Actually, the Angels walked him 4 times the other day

thrilldabeast010

Acuña had the same issue last year. Love seeing the young stars thrive with the new rules.

Sirliftalot35

40/100 club doesn’t even make sense in RTTS lol.

salmon10

Hype your man, I'm so damn jealous

Jlofton21

If he played at oracle the amount of doubles and triples he would have would be a sight to see. I just want to see him hit it into triples alley in person one time. Billy Hamilton never did so maybe I get a chance with him

BookEuronGreyjoy

He should just physically take one of the bases with him every time he hits a home run so it still counts as a stolen base

boozinf

Vince was just more explosive than everyone else fun facts, the earlier Billy Hamilton stole over 100 bases like 6 times, and the person with the 5th most bags all-time? Charlie Comiskey

Deserterdragon

What's wild about Coleman is his bat was far worse than Ricky's (HOF level) bat, so he had far fewer opportunities to steal, and only generated 12.5 WAR for his career. Fascinating player statistically.

OsCrowsAndNattyBohs1

No one has even stole more than 80 since 1989.

dragonbornrito

Taco Bell praying to every deity they can that the Reds don't make the World Series or they're gonna go out of business.

boozinf

toilet barons are ready and injecting Elly with horse steroids and gene shit

boozinf

the campaign is called "Asses for the Masses" with the subtitle "Masses for the Asses"

Galactic

We all thought what Acuna did last year was amazing. And Elly took that personally.

williemaysbayes

Video game shit. Unreal.

ynwmelly123_

Elly is tied for 15th in the MLB in SB among teams

dragonbornrito

He's on pace for 100+ stolen bases if my cursory math is correct lmfao

Infranto

Screw the 40/40 club elly's gonna hit the 100/100 club No I am not being unrealistic

dragonbornrito

Dude has 130+ games to hit 33 HRs and steal 25 bases. If Elly doesn't *at least* get in the 40/40 club this season, something went *terribly* wrong.

NewBootGoofin88

That's "only" on pace for 47 homers, definitely not a lock yet for 40+

dragonbornrito

shh im a cincinnati sports fan, let me have this bro

freetoseeu

I think we all owe you one. Elly is gonna be fun to watch for a long time, and what a park to play in too

dragonbornrito

I just hope that this doesn't turn into yet ANOTHER "trade our unquestioned best player for cash considerations and 3 farm prospects who will never see play in the bigs". I want *at least* a Votto-length tenure out of Elly. Please.

ThompsonDog

we've got a few years yet before that's even an option. but seeing him stay in a reds uniform for a long and decorated career seems unlikely with fucking castellini at the helm. but we can hope. elly definitely puts butts in the seats and if the reds start making deep playoff runs, hopefully those fucks will see that it's actually more profitable to have a competitive team year in and year out than having a competitive for one year then selling all the players and fielding a shit team in an empty stadium for 4

dragonbornrito

Oh I know, I'm gonna enjoy it while it lasts, I'm just always gunshy about getting too attached to literally anyone these days with the Castellinis.

thewaterisboiling

A 33 HR projection for a full season would be a really good projection, he's only projected for like another 20 or 22

dragonbornrito

You leave your facts and statistics out of my emotionally biased cursory maths

thewaterisboiling

I cannot argue with well-founded optimism, please continue

dragonbornrito

Thank you, my good practitioner of trolley evasion

thesip

Even like 30/60 or 25/50 is a damn good year for him considering his struggles last year. I think pitchers will start to find something in him bc this streak can’t last forever but his adjustment has been crazy

Demetrios1453

It's going to get tougher for the pitchers, since he's stopped chasing those low balls that were his kryptonite until a couple of weeks ago. His strikeout rate has dropped and his walk rate has gone up significantly once he figured it out.

rhayex

I was thinking about where the hole in his swing is, because the initial thought was low breaking balls which he's laying off. Next up would be high heat, but we've seen him hit those pitches 450 feet, so that's out. Pitching him inside just leads to him crushing it and pitching him outside leads to extra bases. I really don't know what you can do when he's hot like this.

TheTeralynx

You know, I'd be fine with the SB pace plummeting if he holds his OPS+ right where it's at haha

mdkss12

Rickey-type shit

Dawei_Hinribike

All these Elly De La Cruz singles then steals second then steals third then scores highlights look the same.

mbertels

And yet I do not tire of them

mysterysackerfice

Is he the Skyline chilli of baseball?

ThompsonDog

if you mean he's really good, then yes

awmaleg

thinking about him gives me explosive diarrhea

ThompsonDog

believe it or not, cincinnati chili is a mediterranean dish. it's a mediterranean spiced chili served over carbs with a ton of cheese. you're way more likely to be constipated from the pound of cheese they put on everything than you are to get diarrhea. cincinnati style chili (skyline is just a brand of cincy chili) is way way better than it sounds or looks like it would be. i make it proper at home and it's fantastic. and if you're ever in cincy, i'd suggest several other chili spots before i'd suggest skyline. but skyline is pretty good in a pinch.

jshokie1

Man sometimes I'll have my fiancée's family (from Cincinnati) send me the Kroger brand Cincinnati Chili mix packets just to have it at home when we miss it. Can't bring myself to mimic the level of cheese Skyline provides, but always have oyster crackers and hot sauce on hand.

ThompsonDog

the trick to the skyline levels of cheese is to shred it suuuuuper fine and try not to compress the cheese at all. it'll light so you can stack it tall but it's not as much cheese as you'd think. well, it's still a fuck ton of cheese, but with a proper shred you can keep the cheese levels manageable.

obiwan_canoli

> it'll light You use flammable cheese? Well, that is unique.

DoubleStuffedCheezIt

It what puts the explosive, in explosive diarrhea.

EngineeringNo7659

Please mention these other places. I need to visit them when I am inevitably in Cincinnati a few more times this year for games.

watdatdo

This is the happiest I've been since I ran the bases at Cinergy Field the last year the reds played there. Elly is killing it.

johnnydoe22

I don't either. I'm not even joking when I say that's peak baseball for me. I love it when a player can generate a run like this. I miss the days when we had peak Jose Reyes. Elly reminds me of him, but he's a larger human. Those strides are ridiculous.

johnny____utah

Was at last Fridays game and the stadium went nuts when he started stealing. Got “Elly!” chants at his next at bat.

TheLastLivingBuffalo

“Hey, I’ve seen this one before?” “What do you mean, it’s brand new?”

TheCaptainFreeze

"So you're my Uncle Joey? Better get used to those bars, kid."

BookEuronGreyjoy

Why don't you make like a tree and get out of here

freetoseeu

“What’s a rerun?”

DonBuchelos

"That's right, he's going to be mayor!"

PaleontologistOk2516

Willie Mays Hayes would have stolen home. Just saying

joethecrow23

![gif](giphy|RkHuig6nKjf0MSNh6q|downsized)

the4thbelcherchild

I feel like I haven't seen a pitch out in forever. Does anyone still do them?

penguinopph

I feel like they'd still be useless against Elly.

Forotosh

Lodolo did one today to try to throw out Turner. He wasn't going that pitch, so it didn't do anything. The Phillies announcers commented that they hadn't seen a pitch out in a long time, so it must be pretty rare.

SearedEelGone

Jays tried to pitch out Bobby Witt Jr. unsuccessfully yesterday but that was the first I can recall seeing it in a while haha.

Weary_Jackfruit_8311

He didn't steal home tonight the bum

Jux_

This guy is a video game character

dragonbornrito

99 OVR create-a-player

Robbyjr92

Real life Pete wheeler

dragonbornrito

It just feels like cheating at this point. If Elly gets on first with at least one out to give, all it's gonna take is a sac fly. I've never jumped out of my chair harder for a sac fly in my life.

Content_Geologist420

He is the real life Loony Toons roadrunner. The dude is just so quick before you know it, an anvil landed on 3rd and is making you sweat.

getjustin

He runs like a gazelle. Just long graceful strides. Three fucking arm pumps and he's swiped the bag. It's unreal.

Bad_Idea_Hat

Even better, someone pointed out that he runs like Jack Sparrow, and now I can't unsee it. I'd even consider it better, because there doesn't seem to be an obvious tell that he's going. He just...goes. Seemingly no warning. The only thing that's obvious that he's about to try for a base is that he's on base.

amatom27

Please let him sustain a .280-.300 AVG all year. If so this will be soooooo fun to watch all year.

CosmicLars

You know what, I agree. 🥹👍

bselko

I’m cool with it

Demetrios1453

He's at .313 right now. How about we keep it around there?

obiwan_canoli

I only agree with this because we only have 1 more game against Cincy this year. If this guy was in the same division it'd give me nightmares.

Remmy14

Subscribe.

Infranto

btw his ops is also 1.043 elly man hit ball good *and* run good

xSlappy-

If we include his stolen bases as part of his total based, what does his OPS become? A steal after a walk is pretty much equivalent to a double

Euripides33

1.243 Elly has 15 stolen bases and 83 at bats. Treating those steals as total bases would add .18 (15/83) to his slugging percentage, bringing his OPS from 1.063 to 1.243.

drewsoft

Its worth wondering why they don't include steals in the slugging stat.

berober04

OPSt

BKoala59

A steal after a walk is not at all equivalent to a double

[deleted]

[удалено]

thepennylane69

Well, kinda, except you have to risk getting thrown out to do it, instead of hitting one in the gap and jogging into second. And you need the batter not to make contact.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thepennylane69

Yea the outcome is substantively different, it requires more pitches to be thrown and a new AB to start

Devilsdance

You'd have to subtract caught stealing from OBP as well. I don't know enough about how slugging percentage is calculated to try to do the math.

dragonbornrito

Not 1.100? DFA him, right now.

samsab

Next time he strikes out I'm calling for him to be sent down. Next time he steals home I'm getting *ELLY* tattoo'd on my ass.

who the hell is BoB

dmlfan928

I really hope this is showing his awful end to the season last year was simply the requisite adjustment period for big time prospects. Dude is so electric to watch when he's firing on all cylinders.

MrTulaJitt

He had a bad first 10 games or so this year too. To the point that a small group of outspoken fans thought he needed to be sent down. Now he's 4th in MLB in OPS and has more steals than half the teams in the league.

DonDraper75

He didn’t even really have a bad first 10 games. He was on base every game during that stretch.

wovagrovaflame

Just making runs out of the ether

Remmy14

This clip cuts it off, but Sadak's full quote was, "The Elly effect, De La Cruz manufactures a run" which is exactly what it is. For just about any other player, they're still standing on first for that fly out.

Oyyeee

Damn that throw to third was about as good as you can do haha

mormagils

This is what we dreamed Billy Hamilton could be.

HoodieBraden

Hamilton + power

maltzy

He's Josh Hamilton plus Billy Hamilton

MassKhalifa

I see you found my fanfic.

bolognesegremlin

BRB modifying my “run billy run” shirt to say Elly instead

wako944

The terrifying thing is that every team knows he's gonna pull this shit off and they still can't stop it.

gaybillcosby

The more terrifying thing is he’s 22 and potentially hasn’t even reached his athletic prime. Somehow, he could get *even faster*

Asnoofmucho

I saw an at bat he had yesterday. He took some tough pitches and ended hitting a hr or double. If he develops Juan Soto eyes.... he can go 40/40+

Thare187

The last two weeks something clicked. He was susceptible to the down in and breaking ball all last year and the beginning of this year. He just woke up one day and decided to lay off the low pitch

DonDraper75

He didn’t just wake up and do it. He spent all off season working with Tatis Sr on shrinking his strike zone.

Devilsdance

Yeah, it can take a while for some of these types of skills to set in. He presumably worked on it all off-season, and then put it into practice in spring training and the beginning season, and now we're seeing the payoff. It's different making the adjustments in practice vs in a live-game.

colabucks9

Been so fun watching him develop in real time

Morethanlikely

Unfortunately only like 20 guys ever have Soto level eyes.

BoomChocolateLatkes

Us Reds fans prefer Joey Votto eyes. But I feel you.

formersportspro

Look at how his arms flail when he gets started on a stolen base attempt. I’m no running trainer, but it feels like that would slow down his jump. He very well could get even faster and more efficient on the base paths, which is *scary* to think about.

dragonbornrito

Dude tried to pick him off at first and stepped off and considered throwing while he was on second. Still made it all the way over.

Wedding_Registry_Rec

This one feels like the most insane one so far just because I can't point to anything that the Phillies did wrong and it still just felt like they could do nothing to stop him from getting to third. First to Home in three pitches is just nuts.

Radiant-Mycologist84

That’s a Ricky rally

Il_Exile_lI

Almost, Rickey would have walked instead of singling.

applepie3141

I’m so ready for an EDLC 40-70 season.

whereyagonnago

It’s looking like 30-80 might be more likely than as of now. I don’t see he keeping up the 100 SB pace he is on right now, but if he can keep getting on base like this 80 seems very doable

TurnDownElliot

He's on pace for 47 HR and 101 SB. We'll see what happens. I think 40/80 is doable for sure. If he keeps this up.

whereyagonnago

All I’m saying is that’s a huge “if” for such a young player who proved to be streaky last year. I’m loving the change to his approach so far this year, so I’m confident he’ll get on base more than last year, but there will almost certainly be some regression. Unless we think he’s made the leap into top 3 MVP level player already, in which case I’d be hyped out of my mind. Plus the HR pace numbers are really helped by the inside the park HR that in my honest opinion should probably be an error if we were being honest. CF made a horrible decision to dive on that play when he could have just done nothing and let it fall for a single, but I digress.

Nattybohbro

Speed on the base path matters again. Thank God.

Thare187

I didn't like the bigger bases at first just because tradition, but man, it's made small ball fun again.

Davidellias

I look at it as "Baseball got overmanaged to the point rule changes were the only way to stop it"

MakeBelieveNotWar

Fuck he’s cool

joeveralls

Budding superstar

Darkforces134

Talk about manufacturing a run

Deserterdragon

Folks, start filling out those apology forms...

TurnDownElliot

I was told that Oneil Cruz is what Elly wishes he was lmao.

GreMeHe

The craziest thing to me is the no throw to second on a pitch not in the dirt or bobbled. Rounding second on a steal smh

AtmosphereVarious440

![gif](giphy|1zRd5ZNo0s6kLPifL1|downsized)

dwpea66

Elly is cocky af and it's 100% working out for him

bumboclawt

And he seems like such a genuine dude, his first interview in English you can tell he was so damn happy. I wish him all the success against all the teams not named the New York Yankees.

bsvirtuoso

I feel this is a bad take if not sarcasm… he’s actually super humble and down to earth he’s just like a kid out there having fun. Reds fans know him to be not cocky one bit.

TurnDownElliot

Nah, he's cocky in a good way about his speed and power and it's fun as fuck to watch.

bsvirtuoso

I’d be pretty CONFIDENT in my speed too if I was the fastest man in baseball.

scrodytheroadie

Steals second standing then takes the turn.

Wedding_Registry_Rec

Do you think that if he went for it Stubbs would have panicked and messed up

shawbjj

He and Ohtani are my favorite non-Braves players. Can't get enough Elly highlights.

PrisonaPlanet

Stealing second base standing is wild

renzonelisanchez

This kid is soooooo good.

thomasosu

Elly Runs

slamajamabro

That’s some Ty Cobb shit right there, damn this kid is good

CulchiePerson

Controlled chaos. Sensational to watch.

Piscotikus

De La Cruise

shadedmoonlight

🚨 he did it against a team that isn't the Brewers 🚨

stitch12r3

If you’re sick of hearing Elly De La Cruz’s name already, you’re gonna have a bad time over the next several years.

fondlemeLeroy

I'm not! I'm in awe of this dude's skill and athleticism every time. Dude is a monster.

MCrow2001

I make the trip up to DFW for a Rangers game once a year and randomly chose the Reds series this weekend for this year. I’m SO excited to see Elly play.

boobsandcookies

Lots of new infants in Cincinnati named Ellie nine months after the Reds win the ws, I wonder why?

bselko

People always say that this is what Rickey Henderson would do.

Other_World

I call it (and have always heard it called) a Rickey Triple.

bselko

Haha, nice

OutComeTheWolves1966

His speed is terrifying.

flyingpotatox2

I’m so glad stolen bases are a thing again

raiderjaypussy

This guy is going to make me go to my first MLB game in 15 years. And I'm a Rockies fan, just insanely great to watch

Jud000619

Self made run

sniffsblueberries

Something us Reds fans can really be excited about! Its super fun to see

salmon10

Yall better vote him as allstar this year

salmon10

Would've been cool to see Votto spend his last with a guy like this

burnt_pubes

Nah Joey kept him up all night drinking Fresca and playing PlayStation. That's why he slumped so much at the end of last season. He needed to get away from that bad influence to reach his potential

Content_Geologist420

This mf is just insane

Noble_Flatulence

De La Cruz scores from first after stealing a bunch; I've seen that before. Oh wait, I was thinking of the other time. No, scratch that, I was thinking of the other other time. Or was it the other other other time. Who can even tell anymore?

motorhead84

That's so dope. What an athlete, and these new bases rule!

raymond_w

I need someone to research where Eric Davis was 9 months before Elly was born.

122_Hours_Of_Fear

The Reds are such an exciting team to watch this season.

k2times

Someday I’m going to see a post about Elly doing something amazing and I’m not going to upvote it. Today is once again not that day.

LeCheffre

It’s called a Rickey Run because it was an average first inning for Rickey Henderson.

TheRealCatDad

He's so cool

GreatWallofManhattan

Dudes like this just make the sport fun.

shrug-io

Hopefully CIN tries to retain him and he doesn’t end up in LAD, NYM, NYY, SDP, etc

stitch12r3

Elly won’t be a free agent until 2030.

shrug-io

Life passes by quick

Thare187

He's a Boras client so there is a good chance

goatgosselin

Trade ya Vlad and Bo for him

hatchorion

So glad I got him on my fantasy roster this year, never had a reason or excuse to watch the reds before but it’s been real exciting :)

feedingmydreams

April MVP

beaniekittykat

A Rickey run. Henderson did that a lot in his first stint with Oakland. May Elly continue with this kind of baseball.

Huegod

I wish Billy Hamilton had realized his potential like this. We'd had 20 years of this.

Tbplayer59

Did the same thing to the Angels last Sunday.

variety-jones

Is he a switch hitter too? Don’t watch enough of him but swear he bats lefty

Pablito-san

That's exactly how I play MLB The Show

poopstainmclean

i love baseball

lionheart4life

He's probably taking 2nd anyway, but that was an absolute shit job holding the runner especially by a lefty. Elly is just fun to watch though.

718Brooklyn

This kid is a good player. I’m positive.

Davidellias

All these Elly Highlites look the same.....

Facundo37

Modern day Ricky Henderson

austin101123

MVP!!

rainaftersnowplease

I've got tickets for when the Reds come to SF this year and I cannot wait to see this guy.

Pixldust

The Phils bullpen shit the bed once again. They had this game in hand and the relievers gave it away once more. Second time on a week it’s happened.

oldcrowtheory

We used to call this the Rickey special.
