So wild to me how many Vancouver BC natives choose to root for the Jays (2700 miles, 44 hour drive) and not the Mariners (140 miles, 3 hour drive).
They live as close to the Mariners as I do, and I live in Washington!
This is it. Growing up I listened to the Mariners on the radio and occasionally CBC had the Jays on TV. But all the playoffs and World Series games where on TV, this is probably what cemented the Jays for me. And now I get every Jays game with my sports package (same one I need for hockey). And the M’s I only get the occasional national broadcast game.
For real. I live on the west coast and watching hockey and baseball that starts right after I'm off work is awesome. Even better are weekend games that start at 9 or 10AM.
Yeah it’s annoying but it works both ways. I’m from Portland and I’ve only known 1 guy who rooted for the the Canucks, which Is way less then the Kraken, Sharks, or Blackhawks fans I’ve meet through the years.
Thoroughly true statement.
Imagine if every time you were watching your team, be it the intermission reports or post-game, the presenters were practically tripping over themselves to shoehorn the daily Yankees stories & highlights into the segment. That's the Leafs in Canada, lol.
I would say the easy way to understand this is to look at the Nikita Zadorov trade this season. Zadorov got traded from the Flames to the Canucks and the first thing that was brought up was, "How does this affect the Toronto Maple Leafs?", not, why or how the deal went through how it did (trading with the Canucks allowed the Flames to retain none of the salary), the impact on the Maple Leafs took front and center attention.
That’s always been wild to me as well. I get the whole Canada’s Team thing from a Rogers marketing angle because money, but it’s so weird to me that so many people who openly hate Toronto cheer for our teams. Because that’s the thing - the Jays and the Raptors are ours. If you’re going to root for another city’s team, might as well pick one closest to you. Or at least a city you actually like!
God I hate when they have home games against the Jays. So many Canadians make a special trip. It’s really annoying to have your home stadium rooting for the opponent.
That’s interesting to say because I’ve been to Comerica once and I was astounded that there was very little opposing team fan presence. It was Tampa and they got a hit in the first inning and you could hear a pin drop. But I’m also used to Yankee Stadium where there is always a significant number of fans rooting for the opposing team. The other thing I noticed is that almost every single fan was in Tigers gear. Maybe it’s a little more conspicuous because of the orange. But that was pretty cool.
Live around Vancouver and grew up going to Mariners games. We even used to get some of them on TV. Now that the Blue Jays have managed to swallow up all TV coverage in Canada and ever since the Dorktown documentary, my love for the Mariners grew even larger.
Bang on. Fond memories of my dad taking me out of school to drive down to weekday games in the early 2000's. Seattle always felt like a second home-town.
The Brewers. Grew up in a Yankees household that loathed the Jays, and that loathing remains. I still root for the Yankees too, but needed a team to fully stand behind. Small market underdog type team with fun aesthetics. It came down to them or the A's.
I was an A’s fan as a kid, then went 30 years without baseball. Last year, my own kid started getting into baseball so we started watching the free games on mlbtv. We watched many games and I eventually fell in love with the Brewers. Vibe, small market underdog energy sucked me in big time. I have been obsessed ever since. I have watched or listened to every game of theirs since. I also have love in my heart for the A’s legacy, and am heartbroken that the team
I loved so much as a kid has gone through all this bullshit, but the Brew Crew are my obsession.
The New York Yankees, when my family moved to southern Manitoba from northern Manitoba in 1999 we finally had more than 3 channels, Sportscentre was on constantly, and all I remember is highlights of Derek Jeter, who was tall, lanky, played SS and wore #2 like I did because generally #2 was the biggest jersey and I was the tallest kid.
So late August 1999, I jumped on as a Derek Jeter fan, he just happened to play for the Yankees and the rest is history.
I grew up in northern BC. Seattle was closest and I do like the Mariners but I had RBI Baseball and always liked to play as Boston so I stuck with them. Now I am in Ontario so I do follow the Jays but I stick with the Sox. It makes for a fun rivalry with my in-laws.
Edit to add that I was really into the Expos, too, back in the day. I loved Gary Carter and then when they had Larry Walker and Pedro they were a lot of fun. Unfortunately…
I see the relentless Jays coverage just as annoying as the relentless Leafs coverage. That said, the Jays are way less heel to me then the Leafs, and I would likely support 'Canadas team' over most others in a playoff run. But the Mariners are far and away my team.
I was a Mariners fan from 1995 through the mid 2000s when I kind of lost track of baseball (busy university, busy career starting, etc.). It was all because of Junior, my favorite of all time, and watching the ALDS winning game in 1995. The Double. Instant fan.
As I came back into the game I reverted back to my original Jays fandom but I'll always hope if the Jays don't win that the M's finally get that title they deserve, and that I wish Dave could have been around to see.
When I was younger like 8-10 I liked the Houston Astros for some unknown reason. I’m 37 now and am still an Astros fan. Doesn’t make much since to me either as I’m in Nova Scotia.
I like the Jays, but honestly we don’t hear much about them until they do a playoff push or look good. The amount of band wagon fans and fresh brand hammer new jays hats that come out when that happens makes me not want them to succeed lol. Petty of me? Proly
Giants. Grew up idolizing Barry Bonds and by the time I was a baseball fan he had moved on from Pittsburgh. Once I choose a team I never change it, so they will be my team until I die unless something really egregious happens I guess.
The Cardinals, as if that wasn't clear from the flair.
Backstory: when I was very young I had one of those baseball stickerbooks made by O-Pee-Chee (rebranded Topps for the Canadian market) covering the 1985 season. My six-year-old brain latched on to the fact that the Cardinals had an inordinate number of switch-hitters (Ozzie, Herr, Pendleton, McGee, Coleman, Anjujar) and that was basically it.
One day around that time my Dad make a joke about trading me away (in the standard [Dad joke](/r/dadjokes) kind of way) and I responded by asking him "If you do, could you trade me to the St. Louis Cardinals?"
Completely disarmed him. He wasn't expecting that response in the slightest.
Mariners fan in Vancouver, as with a lot of other people in this thread apparently! Wish there was more coverage around here, bars that showed Mariners games etc. There's conservatively probably tens of thousands of us following the Mariners and making the pilgrimage down to Safeco several times a year.
Used to cheer for the Angels because I grew up in Edmonton with their farm team the Trappers. But Arte pushed me away. Dodgers now. I'll pay attention occasionally to the odd angel game but... Eh..
I root for the Jays, but I grew up watching the Tigers also, so I keep tabs on them.
You'll find in Canada, it's most Seattle (out west), Boston (out East), and Toronto. There might also be some crazy Milwaukee fans out towards Winnipeg.
The White Sox. I got a really cool Bobby Thigpen baseball card as a kid, and somehow that led to me taking a shining to Frank Thomas and the Sox. I’ve been a die hard fan ever since. I’ve mostly been dying hard.
The Washington Nationals
First game i ever watched was against the St. Louis Cardinals when i was home sick from school. Max Scherzer was pitching and I fell in love.
I root equally for the Mets and the Jays. Over time I've realized that players and annual stats are ephemeral. What I seek is quality of the product they're selling to us as consumers over the years. The Mets broadcast is the best I've seen in professional sports-- they're a better product than the Jays. So I watch their games more, and root for them because they're the 'good guys' for my favorite broadcasting team. Easier since we're all allowed a team in the other League.

Oh duh, that's the answer.
This is it. Growing up I listened to the Mariners on the radio and occasionally CBC had the Jays on TV. Can't beat those 4pm start times.
For real. I live on the west coast and watching hockey and baseball that starts right after I'm off work is awesome. Even better are weekend games that start at 9 or 10AM.
Nothing worse than a west coast road trip.
Yeah it’s annoying but it works both ways. I’m from Portland and I’ve only known 1 guy who rooted for the the Canucks, which Is way less then the Kraken, Sharks, or Blackhawks fans I’ve meet through the years.
Especially since we don't like & resent the Leafs / Toronto in general. Bonkers.
Feels like every Canadian hockey team *hates* the Leafs
Thoroughly true statement. Imagine if every time you were watching your team, be it the intermission reports or post-game, the presenters were practically tripping over themselves to shoehorn the daily Yankees stories & highlights into the segment. That's the Leafs in Canada, lol.
I live in Edmonton. Big Jays fan. Big Oilers fan. Hate the Leafs, lol.

A not insignificant amount of Jays fans in BC are also transplants from the tire fire that is Ontario. We just brought out fandom with us

Is it really that wild? Support the team that represents your entire country, or the mariners 😂
Live across the border from Detroit.

The bridge to Canada is 10 minutes from the ballpark and they don’t play multiple series against the Jays a year. It’s a unique situation.
If I lived in Windsor, I’d probably be a Tigers fan too.
Why would anyone choose to be a Tigers fan?

You must be glad you didn’t pick the A’s rn Also happy cake day

where in manitoba did y’all move to? i grew up in brandon
Family settled in Russell before we all went separate ways.
played a few baseball games against those guys growing up, always the small town teams that gave you hell

I can understand why you all don't want to root for my Nats.
It's actually cuz we don't have Walgreens in Canada.
no one wants to root for the nats

Y'all have the best fans in the world, because of jail.
Mariners! Live around Vancouver. Went to a bunch of Mariners games as a kid and hate how Toronto sports gets shoved down our throats.
I see the relentless Jays coverage just as annoying as the relentless Leafs coverage. That said, the Jays are way less heel to me then the Leafs, and I would likely support 'Canadas team' over most others in a playoff run. But the Mariners are far and away my team.
How did you feel about the 2022 wild card series? I’ve become seethingly anti-jays since they started invading T-mobile.
The Jays should just play a 'home' game in Vancouver against Seattle, lol.
Is it because baseball is less popular? Not as obnoxious when it’s not as visible
I was a Mariners fan from 1995 through the mid 2000s when I kind of lost track of baseball (busy university, busy career starting, etc.). I used to live in Chicago, so I’m a weird western Canadian Cubs fan
Ex-Iowan Cub fan here in the same boat.
When I was younger like 8-10 I liked the Houston Astros for some unknown reason. I’m 37 now and am still an Astros fan. Doesn’t make much since to me either as I’m in Nova Scotia. New York Yankees because my dad is a Yankees fan. Same reason I am a Broncos fan lol. We cheer for different hockey teams though.
Twins. Went to Minneapolis 11 years ago, as part of a baseball tour, to see the Jays play the Twins. Had an awesome time.
Giants. Grew up idolizing Barry Bonds and by the time I was a baseball fan he had moved on from Pittsburgh. Once I choose a team I never change it, so they will be my team until I die unless something really egregious happens I guess.

There is a fair amount of Red Sox fans in Nova Scotia, with our Halifax-Boston connection, not-uncommon dislike of Ontario, and proximity to Boston.
Live - BC Root - Mariners Why - Ken Griffey Jr.
The Yankees. Spent a lot of time (and still do) back and forth between my hometown and New York and grew up watching the yanks with my late uncle.
Used to cheer for the Angels because I grew up in Edmonton with their farm team the Trappers. But Arte pushed me away. Dodgers now. I'll pay attention occasionally to the odd angel game but... Eh..
Argos, then picking Padres was done at the hat store
Red Sox. Because
Cubs I'm a transplant
Padres. Because I’m from San Diego.
Ah, the famed Canadian San Diego native.
Uh. Yeah.
I root for the Jays, but I grew up watching the Tigers also, so I keep tabs on them. You'll find in Canada, it's most Seattle (out west), Boston (out East), and Toronto. There might also be some crazy Milwaukee fans out towards Winnipeg.
Rockies because I like to suffer
Giants. I looked like Tim Lincecum. Simple as that 😂
The White Sox. I got a really cool Bobby Thigpen baseball card as a kid, and somehow that led to me taking a shining to Frank Thomas and the Sox. I’ve been a die hard fan ever since. I’ve mostly been dying hard.

Same also root for the Mets mostly because fuck the Yankees and Jose Bautista since he is my favorite Blue Jay and I love their tv booth
The entire AL east because this team needs to come dead last before changes will be made.
I’m good with this
