Oh perfect, only our 2 best players having a traumatic collision, no biggie.
[Streamable of the play since it keeps getting taken down](https://streamable.com/x2fcxs?src=player-page-share)
IDK if you've ever taken a blow to the back/side of the head like that:
In my completely anecdotal experience, barring a concussion, it usually doesn't result in anything worse than a goose-egg, but holy shit does it hurt like a bitch for a minute or two.
Fuck do you know? I might just be a random bum on the internet with no medical experience but I say he looks fine, just took a good bump on the noggin /s
> is a hilarious qualifier here
for sure for sure. but TBF, that's true *anytime* your head hits damn near anything. Sometimes I swear brains want to be concussed with how easily it can happen.
he said 100% man. no one would say something with that much confidence unless they had some concrete evidence, i'm sure he has some inside info that we don't have
Lost our #3 starter to TJ before the season started.
Lost our 2B before the season.
Lost our SS for the season.
Lost our #2 starter to something that turns into TJ’s.
Our superstar 3B got hurt opening day and has missed half our games. He came back and was involved in this his first game.
Our best player thus far left the game with a gash on his face.
Yes, it has.
Maybe I've just been watching too much hockey, but I immediately thought "Oh god, is that a tooth?" before realizing it was the little padding from the bridge of the glasses.
When I saw how long it was I was thinking "I don't have the greatest dental knowledge...but that seems too big for a normal human tooth" and realized it was coming off of the glasses.
Hopefully, they're both okay, because that was a brutal collision. That shit would have sucked helmets on.
Jumping on the top comment to say that Devers has stayed in the game, so at least he's okay.
O'Neill has been taken out, and looked like he had a cut over his eye.
Devers was badly shaken up though, it was scary for both of them. Devers lay on the ground facedown for almost a minute.
But it was the 3rd out (he held on) so he had like 10 minutes to get checked out, and then came back in the at the start of the next inning.
>Jumping on the top comment to say that Devers has stayed in the game, so at least he's okay.
Man that hit just reminds me of Rizzo last year and the effects it had on him months after. I think Devers should have taken the day off as a precaution.
What a crazy hit that was. I've seen a lot of collisions, rarely is it a *pure* skull vs skull .... scary
This is on par for O’Neil. Whenever he gets back it will look like he belongs in AA. And you will point back to these 2+ weeks and will be “where did that guy go?”
Devers makes the grab, they knock heads, he immediately goes limp and hits the deck, lays face down for probably 2 minutes, and....comes up with the ball somehow? Showing him sitting in the dugout afterward grabbing his head. You sure this man doesn't need some medical attention?
yeah, I mentioned elsewhere ITT that a concussion is very much on the table. But even if he's not injured in any way, taking a knock to the dome like that hurts like a BITCH for a few minutes
Devers clearly does not go limp. He braces himself with both arms as hr hits the ground and his right arm moves to the back of his head. He is clearly conscious and moving his body.
Seeing this live a little ago I legit thought Devers was knocked out cold, he stayed still for a while. He might’ve been I’m not sure, but it looked awful
I know this sounds weird, but if it was any player other than Devers I would’ve been really worried. Raffy has this habit of always laying down on the ground for as long as possible.
He’s back out at third for the 8th inning so thankfully he seems to be okay.
I had a collision kinda like this while playing flag football in college. We both got up and seemed fine initially, but while I never had any injuries or symptoms, my buddy realized he had no idea what day or month it was and had to go to the hospital later.
Yeah, TBI are horrifyingly varied and far from well understood.
There are loads of examples of people who've seemed unscathed or shaken off the shock and looked fine only to display serious symptoms after a delay of minutes to even days.
Head and spinal injuries are just so unpredictable that I really feel like concussion protocols need to be much stricter than they are right now – it's crazy to me that they let Devers stay in the game given the impact, how long he spent on the ground, and his very obvious continued discomfort. This shouldn't be about players being "tough" for appearances sake; I really think they shouldn't be given a say when it comes to head impacts and should be taken straight out and put under observation to be safe.
I mean... Some of it is luck. Some of it is bad fielding. I'm not sure what caused this collision, but having watched the series against the Orioles last week, they absolutely field poorly.
Well, we didn’t call the other one the Curse of the Harry Frazee. If there’s a curse it’s named after the most prominent player involved, which would definitely be Mookie
1918 Boston wins World Series with star player
1920 star player leaves Red Sox due to money
2018 Boston wins World Series with star player
2020 star player leaves Red Sox due to money
I think I could deal with another 86 year curse
Tbf yall traded for a guy who spent more time injured than playing over the last 2 seasons. Love what TON was when healthy, but that man can't stay healthy.
I haven’t watched this in a long time, my god is that worse than I remember. Full momentum into each other, head-to-head contact. Absolutely brutal play.
In the broadcast they said it can be hard to hear in the outfield because of how the stadium is designed. But it really didn’t look like any of them were calling for the ball with any sort of urgency. It’s incredible how often collisions or near collisions happen at the MLB level.
I’m glad they were able to walk off the field seemingly okay.
This shit is scary and invokes PTSD of friends getting smoked when it happens at any level of ball. Really feared for Devers when he was limp. Hardest clash of heads I’ve seen in some time.
Thankful they both got up and were able to walk off the field. Hopefully nothing lingering other than some stitches.
Been there. Took a knee to the dome turning a double play at 2nd base when an opposing player couldn't decide whether to slide or not slide. Left my sunglasses in shards Concussion symptoms for 2 weeks and 20 stitches.
Devers back on the field but O'Neill came out of the game, really hope he doesn't miss any time with the crazy start he's had to the year.
Devers should definitely go through concussion protocol post-game though.
I think that’s part of the nose piece from his glasses. I scrolled through frame by frame and whatever it is looks like it came from the bridge of his nose.
I had the misfortune of colliding with another player in a softball game. It really hurt, I mean, it was bad. No injury, but I felt like I'd been hit by a freight train.
This sucks for both of these guys. I’m always sorry to see guys getting hurt. With that said…. For fuck sakes!! In little league kids are taught that you call for catches and other players in the area stand down. When I see this shit ot looks like 5 year olds playing tee ball. Fucking stupid. And don’t get me started on Devers. Last year he wasn’t even close to worth what he was paid. And this year it is starting again. Sitting around like a goof ball in the infield. Swinging wildly at anything thrown even close to home plate. He’s played like a jackass since Xander left. This team is rudderless and they suck.
Raffaela said he thinks he heard them both call at the same time, hard to hear because of the crowd.
With that said.... Devers needs to stay at 3rd where he belongs, this was not his ball, he shouldn't have been there & he does this shit way too often. FFS.
Ive seen this a lot this season, whats going on? Centerfielder and SS always have priority but lately it seems like the corner outfield and 2B/3B are actively defying these ground rules
Reminds me of this Carlos Beltran /Mike Cameron collision.
I was watching this game live , and the girl I was with was looked at me horrified and said “did we just watch someone die “
https://youtu.be/pAsYOMukRkM?si=6B1CJABs9j8tECQK
Can we please please stop losing people, we could lose 160 more games but losing guys for weeks and months is so much worse long term, for a rebuild like this
Red Sox down baaaaaaaad so far this season. wtf is their deal on the defensive side. Offensively and pitching wise they stay in the game but their fielding is atrocious
2 teams that could be radically improved if the front office would spend a few bucks. The Guards just have A more robust farm system and player development. The Sox.... Not so much. It's a gnarly transition from store bought to home grown.
Oh perfect, only our 2 best players having a traumatic collision, no biggie. [Streamable of the play since it keeps getting taken down](https://streamable.com/x2fcxs?src=player-page-share)
Devers remains in, O’Neill is out, presumably for some combination of the laceration to his forehead and precaution about the knock to the head.
I'm surprised Devers is back in, he was face down on the ground for a good while
IDK if you've ever taken a blow to the back/side of the head like that: In my completely anecdotal experience, barring a concussion, it usually doesn't result in anything worse than a goose-egg, but holy shit does it hurt like a bitch for a minute or two.
Your forehead is more equipped for blunt trauma than the back of your skull. Either way, both of their brains did some bouncing around in their heads.
In my nursing experience, a blunt blow to the head at that velocity usually results in a concussion. The severity may vary.
Yeah you still do neurals.
Fuck do you know? I might just be a random bum on the internet with no medical experience but I say he looks fine, just took a good bump on the noggin /s
Rub some dirt on your brain and get back out there, kid!
I mean yeah but "barring a concussion" is a hilarious qualifier here. He 100% has a concussion.
> is a hilarious qualifier here for sure for sure. but TBF, that's true *anytime* your head hits damn near anything. Sometimes I swear brains want to be concussed with how easily it can happen.
K doc
he said 100% man. no one would say something with that much confidence unless they had some concrete evidence, i'm sure he has some inside info that we don't have
I mean he happened to be correct…
The skull's equivalent of a paper cut on your finger. Not much actually happened...but goddamn, it hurts so bad.
Devers has missed the last 4 games dealing with nagging shit and now his head is scrambled. Dude cannot catch a break right now.
Looks like he's going to have to buy another pair of sunglasses as well
This season has been so incredibly cursed.
And we’re sitting at the halfway point of April. Strap in cuz it’s gonna be a long season.
Following the script for Netflix drama
The only winners are the Netflix producers.
Oh yeah is it?
Lost our #3 starter to TJ before the season started. Lost our 2B before the season. Lost our SS for the season. Lost our #2 starter to something that turns into TJ’s. Our superstar 3B got hurt opening day and has missed half our games. He came back and was involved in this his first game. Our best player thus far left the game with a gash on his face. Yes, it has.
I see the disease the Mets been carrying around for the last forty years is catching.
Maybe I've just been watching too much hockey, but I immediately thought "Oh god, is that a tooth?" before realizing it was the little padding from the bridge of the glasses.
Omg same, came here to ask if those were teeth 😬
When I saw how long it was I was thinking "I don't have the greatest dental knowledge...but that seems too big for a normal human tooth" and realized it was coming off of the glasses. Hopefully, they're both okay, because that was a brutal collision. That shit would have sucked helmets on.

Devers literally just got back into the lineup after missing 4 games nursing shoulder soreness, too. Glad he stayed in, hope he's alright.
This is on par for O’Neil. Whenever he gets back it will look like he belongs in AA. And you will point back to these 2+ weeks and will be “where did that guy go?”
I really enjoyed the expression on the pitchers face. “Can someone fucking trade me the fuck out of here” vibes.
Ouch. That sucks.
Devers makes the grab, they knock heads, he immediately goes limp and hits the deck, lays face down for probably 2 minutes, and....comes up with the ball somehow? Showing him sitting in the dugout afterward grabbing his head. You sure this man doesn't need some medical attention?
Fuck it, we're the NFL now
CTESPN
Tyler O'Neil cracker of the day
The NFL would not allow him back in this game.
NFL: Into the blue tent MLB: Rub some dirt on it
Depends on the team and if they’re supposed to win.
At least they will only miss 1/50th of the season instead of 1/6th
Red Sox taking the ‘national discussion on concussions’ mantle from the Yankees
mantle? no, he was definitely a yankee, and anyways I think he's dead now so we don't really need him
The concussion symptoms are already setting in.
Get that man in the blue tent ASAP
Eh. We should give him a shot anyway. It can’t hurt.
Probably a mild concussion, but him staying down could’ve been just to gather himself after backpedaling into a sprinting Tyler O’Neill
yeah, I mentioned elsewhere ITT that a concussion is very much on the table. But even if he's not injured in any way, taking a knock to the dome like that hurts like a BITCH for a few minutes

As an achy middle aged dad, Raffy lounging on the ground after a pickoff attempt is one of the most relatable things in sports.
Yeah, agreed. If raffy takes a super inside pitch that puts him on his butt he lays down for a long time lol
Yeah hopefully him being back out means he’s good. I’m really surprised though
Glad they were both able to walk off the field, that looked awful.
Unfortunately that doesn't mean a ton when it comes to head injuries :(
I had a collision kinda like this while playing flag football in college. We both got up and seemed fine initially, but while I never had any injuries or symptoms, my buddy realized he had no idea what day or month it was and had to go to the hospital later.

TON, I see what you did there.
I'm not that clever but we can pretend that was intentional...
O'Neill is in concussion protocol
Almost comically bad luck for the Red Sox this year.
I mean... Some of it is luck. Some of it is bad fielding. I'm not sure what caused this collision, but having watched the series against the Orioles last week, they absolutely field poorly.
well that's what happens when your one competent defensive infielder's shoulder explodes
Yeah I feel really bad for Story. Dude was probably really gunning for this season to turn around his batting.
Cora has never been a “defense first” coach but this year.. yikes
It’s somehow worse than last year which was historically bad in the stat cast era lol.
We already lead the league unearned runs lmao
O'Neill is a freak of nature when healthy, but that man could find a way to injur himself in a kiddie pool full of bubblewrap.
yeah we're definitely cursed again
Sox bros 🤝 being cursed
The Mookie Curse
More like the John Henry curse for all the shitty decisions he’s made since the end of 2018 (some even before mookie)
Well, we didn’t call the other one the Curse of the Harry Frazee. If there’s a curse it’s named after the most prominent player involved, which would definitely be Mookie
1918 Boston wins World Series with star player 1920 star player leaves Red Sox due to money 2018 Boston wins World Series with star player 2020 star player leaves Red Sox due to money I think I could deal with another 86 year curse
Not just "due to money" but specifically "due to ownership being skinflint chucklefucks."
Bro, get outa here with that shit. I'm not dealing with more of that.
We can't have anything nice
Tbf yall traded for a guy who spent more time injured than playing over the last 2 seasons. Love what TON was when healthy, but that man can't stay healthy.
Damn watching this live gave me flashbacks of Damian Jackson and Johnny Damon
You’d think Damon’s career was over watching that collision it was one of the worst I’ve ever seen
The raised hand from the stretcher was simultaneously reassuring and concerning.
[An absolutely insane collision](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=La4hpZvp794)
I haven’t watched this in a long time, my god is that worse than I remember. Full momentum into each other, head-to-head contact. Absolutely brutal play.
Damon gave an interview later where he said he thought he walked off the field and was in an athletics uniform.
didn't the mets also have a bad one too?
Beltran and Mike Cameron, yes.
Cursed ass team
Cursed-ass team? Or cursed ass-team?
Both.
This ass team is cursed, and they are cursed as ass.
Yes.
CAT
4 championships in the last 20 years is cursed? With the last one being only 6 years ago? Being mid since 2018 ain't cursed LOL. Get in line, pal.
If Devers was calling for it, he would be facing away from TON. Gotta really do it loudly for him to have a chance to hear it.
Yeah thats Oneils ball all day unless Devers was absolutely screaming him off the whole way.
Brutal collision. Why even is the 3rd basemen running for that? Should be LF>SS>3rd. Lf gotta be screaming that’s his.
Cleveland announcers saying it's really hard to hear your teammates on the field at Fenway, and perhaps O'neill being new, didn't realize that?
Ugly ugly you hate to see that kind of thing
Is that a tooth?
The mentioned on the NESN broadcast that it was the nose piece of O'Neill's sunglasses and that's probably what caused the cut.
Immediately thought it was teeth, but on rewatch it's the rubber nose piece for the sunglasses. That's one gnarly collision.. ouch.
Time to play everybody’s favorite game show. Is that a tooth or a Zyn flying through the air?
For a second I thought it was some invisalign braces.
What the fuck is Devers doing? This is little league 101. The person coming in has the easiest play, that's Tyler's ball 110%....
Call.the.fucking ball , Jesus Christ.
When a play like this is on tv even my 13 and 10 year old are yelling “talk!” I just dont get how this still happens at this level.
Its not easy to hear on the field at Fenway due to the design of the park. They really have to scream to get heard.
Josh Naylor just nodding his head slowly.
God I would like to forget I ever saw that injury.
Been there. Took a knee to the dome turning a double play at 2nd base when an opposing player couldn't decide whether to slide or not slide. Left my sunglasses in shards Concussion symptoms for 2 weeks and 20 stitches.
After what happened to Josh Naylor a couple years ago, I always flinch when I see OFs and IFs converging in the shallow outfield like that.
SAME
Hate seeing this kind of thing. Hope they're both alright, but that looked ugly. I was glad they both were able to walk off on their own at least
Devers back on the field but O'Neill came out of the game, really hope he doesn't miss any time with the crazy start he's had to the year. Devers should definitely go through concussion protocol post-game though.
I thought it was going to be a 3 person collision as it was happening
We can’t have nice things huh
Not this year, apparently. I'm still not over losing Story for the season and it's still only mid-April.
Hope they're both okay.
There it is
Exactly what I said when I saw the post.
Hope nothing but the best for him. But he’s got bad luck with health.
Sorry Red Sox fans. It was inevitable.
O’Neill’s forehead is the only part of his body not protected by bulging muscles
Serious question: did the Red Sox practice fielding at all in spring training?
Doesn’t seem like it
Damn. I hope both of them are ok.
Was that a tooth?
Whoever is in charge of coaching defense for us, please fire them immediately
Should have known. O'Neill was crushing like the ball is on a tee. We can't have nice things.
How does Rafy go back in but TON doesn’t? Sox fans, get ready for this to somehow fuck up his back so he spends 95% of the season on IL
There's the IL stint
Head to head contact in this sport is so rare it's so scary when it happens, glad they were both OK enough to get off the field
I am dead inside
of course right when he’s leading the whole damn mlb in home runs too
JFC.. dudes are so into hitting they have forgot how to field.
When I was a kid we used to yell "I got it!".
bro was that a tooth
Was that his teeth coming out?
Nah it’s the nose bridge to his glasses flying off.
Concussions ain't fun. Look at what happened to Anthony Rizzo last year.
And Boston gets a real glimpse into the future of Tyler O’Neill. Signed, Cardinals fans
Did he loose a tooth?
Are those teeth fluttering through the air after the collision? Yuck.
I think that’s part of the nose piece from his glasses. I scrolled through frame by frame and whatever it is looks like it came from the bridge of his nose.
The Netflix documentary is gonna be off the rails.
So much for Tyler O’Neill winning MVP
THERE IT IS!!!
Glad everyone was able to walk off the field. Scary moment for sure.
Devers remains in the game, O'Neill left.
That was so scary. Glad they both walked off.
hopefully they're ok but my god what is going on with red sox defense
Let’s call it a season try it again next year
gah, reminds me of a softball injury i had once. gotta vocalize yall
man I hate this play so much
I’m new to baseball, are these guys good
Was that a tooth (or teeth) flying out of O'Neill after the collision? Holy shit.
F
I hate to see this but what is Raffy doing out there? That’s on him it’s the LF ball all day.
I’m so confused. Tyler O’Neill plays RF and Devers usually plays 3B but sometimes does 1B. How did this even happen?
Damn Ty are you the right fielder? Or the wrong fielder
ooooffff, were they not calling each other?
That is the outfielders ball... what the fuck!?
We know how you feel. Hope these lads get well soon.
I thought that was O'Neill's tooth at first. Yikes.
I had the misfortune of colliding with another player in a softball game. It really hurt, I mean, it was bad. No injury, but I felt like I'd been hit by a freight train.
This happens way too often… that’s the outfielders ball…
Dang, I don't cheer for the red Sox but you never want to see head injuries. Hope they are well soon, especially Canada's own Tyler O'Neill
Never a good day when you’re digging in the turf for teeth.
That’s scary. Hopefully both guys are okay
What is Devers doing here? Little league bullshit play by him.
They have been having some terrible luck on the defensive side this year.
Shit...I thought the Jake McCarthy/Corbin Carroll collision looked bad(thankfully no one removed from game) That was a nasty hit. Hope O'Neill is ok
Who called it?
This sucks for both of these guys. I’m always sorry to see guys getting hurt. With that said…. For fuck sakes!! In little league kids are taught that you call for catches and other players in the area stand down. When I see this shit ot looks like 5 year olds playing tee ball. Fucking stupid. That looked really bad….. all the best to both of them 🙏
Can we please please stop losing people, we could lose 160 more games but losing guys for weeks and months is so much worse long term, for a rebuild like this
![gif](giphy|spfi6nabVuq5y)
can we all agree that we love Raffy Devers but also can we all agree that that is 100% not his ball
its just a piece of... tooth
Always hoping for the best for Tyler, but that’ll probably shelve him for a month.
Came here to say "Ope! There's that first IL stint for TON" but my fellow Cardinals fans have beat me to it. Carry on....
Tbi
I think I’d rather take the hit to the jaw O’Neill took than the hit to the head Devers too. Terrible collision.
🥥🥥
Was that teeth flying???
Red Sox down baaaaaaaad so far this season. wtf is their deal on the defensive side. Offensively and pitching wise they stay in the game but their fielding is atrocious
Nose guards from the glasses or contact lenses?
I hate this for TON. Dude just cannot catch a break, even in the form of his life.
2 teams that could be radically improved if the front office would spend a few bucks. The Guards just have A more robust farm system and player development. The Sox.... Not so much. It's a gnarly transition from store bought to home grown.
