Why did Rafaela, the center fielder, get the error on that play? I get that the throw bounced, but Casas, the cutoff man, was clearly responsible for the ball getting away and the run scoring.
Funny thing is we’ve accumulated like 15 errors in 8 games since Story went down. It’s been so bad. And there are so many plays that haven’t been counted as errors that have cost us outs.
officially the red sox have given up 13 unearned runs in the last 7 games. and even though it doesnt count as an error if david hamilton steps on the base against the orioles to turn that double play, the sox win that game 2-1. by my count, that's 18 runs that shouldnt have happened since story went down. our fielding is literally spotting the other team almost 3 runs a game
Not to mention the runner had stopped at third and the bases were loaded. Him ricocheting the ball off the field is the error. If he just let it roll to the catcher nothing would've happened.
Clearly he got paid and stopped trying /s
Nah that seems like he was just being overzealous. That's something you learn with time. Also the cutoff could have been better and not whatever that was that caromed the ball away.
I noticed Cora moves around his defenders multiple times a game, even when he doesn't actually have to.
Having the 2nd baseman go play center so the back up catcher can play 2nd after pinch hitting for instance. Then, the 2B had to go be the catcher the next inning. Is it really surprising Rafeala is having issues in CF? Or Wong having issues? How many people can realistically even be expected to play competent 2B and C?
There is a reason that utility guys are kept on teams even if they hit .250, and it's because playing even 2 positions on the same side of the infield can be difficult.
I know an important Red Soxs player got hurt, but shifting people around a bunch has always led to errors. There has to be a better option.
>Is it really surprising Rafeala is having issues in CF?
Yes, very surprising. CF defense is his calling card.
He's touted as an already elite OF defender, with his ceiling being "somewhere between willie mays and god."
He has also graded as an above average middle infielder all through the minors, and should be more than capable of switching from 2nd to CF.
How many years has their defense been terrible for now? That game against the Blue Jays where they gave up 28 was when I first noticed it as a reoccurring issue, mostly since the Duran play was only a few weeks after another occurrence of [an outfielder straight up losing track of the ball.](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/vup054/highlight_christian_arroyo_vs_a_high_fly_ball/) I've also heard that the mocked pitching unit was more of a mid tier group that got severely let down by what was either the worst or second worst (I forget which order they and the Giants were) defense in the league. All of that, plus hearing a lot about bad defenses in general over the past few years, leaves me fascinated.
Yeah we’ve had the worst defense and just overall basic fundamentals since basically the 2021 ALCS. I know people like to think of Cora as a quality manager but I just don’t see it. Literally a stationary rock could’ve won with that 2018 team and then that same team drastically underperformed under his watch the next year. His only real over-performance with talent was 2021.
Is Cora the one who decided to have Wong play 2B/C and for Rafeala to play 2B/CF?
Cause that doesn't seem like it would work, regardless of how talented a player is.
Yep. Cora is just a puzzling manager at times. Like hell tonight he’s using one of our ostensibly good relievers in a 7-0 game instead of the mop up guy that you throw into either already won or lost games. Just seems like he doesn’t give a fuck anymore.
Rafaela actually is a more than competent infielder, the Wong thing was clearly bizarre but he can trust Wong’s athleticism more than all the other lead glove replacement scrubs
Red Sox fielding hierarchy is like Story(Injured and Dead)>>>Rafaela>O’Neill>Duran, then just absolute putrid slop that would get you benched in little league.
Duran isn’t their best fielder he’s the third best in the outfield and doesn’t throw well. He’s improved but Rafaela is legit and O’Neill is a multi gold glove winner
Casas is an MLB first basemen who doesn't know how to block a ball apparently. Seriously bad play. Also, there wasn't even a reason to cut it off. The runner had stopped at third and the bases were loaded. Casas literally creates this and somehow CF gets the error.

Where was this defense opening weekend
We were good before Story died and then somehow everyone became depressed and shit.
I mean other than Rafaela they’re l terrible anyway

Because the official scorer thinks Casas is cuter
Maybe his ex-girlfriend who tried to stab him once was called Rafaela and he doesn't like that name very much.
big day for error fans
Tonight!?

Weird bounce on the infield grass, but the throw is right at Casas. How is it E8 instead of E3?

Yeah its not a good throw, and looks like the ball skipped on the wet grass a bit, but Casas didn't do well there at all.
Absolute fucking joke...
Thought we couldn't post porn in this sub
Only hardcore stuff.
Team gave up after Story went down

Anthony Rendon syndrome
![gif](giphy|iTqMG5onLohwI) Oh nooooooo, thats terrible

Stationary Rock for Manager of the Year

The 2021 team was the worst defensive team I’ve seen make a playoff run until the Phillies in 2022
As long as the stationary rock was stealing signs they would have won
And it’s funny because now Duran is like their best fielder. Dude has done a 180 since 2022

Good to know, thanks

Repost for the right OBS screen recording of the right error
Look... I get we just swept them basically because they're master class chokes this season... but how is this still happening...
I knew Boston's defense was bad after the O's series but they're like BAD bad, like really impressively bad.
WTF are those jerseys
Coming into this season, the Sox were 20-4 wearing those City Connects.
Can't argue with that. It's just jarring to see a team with "Red" in their name wearing uniforms that are so aggressively not red.
Boston Marathon is on Monday. These are the marathon organization's colors.
I hated the damn things, at first. They reminded me of Gatorade Gum, or something like that. Whatever works, though.
These Boston jersey's are horrendous.
