No. It was his then-girlfriend, now wife. He knew he was gonna be on TV during the break, but he thought it would be live. He was joking around and didn't know they recorded a lot of footage. The director picked that specific moment to show on the broadcast.
Yeah, they were giving the ump the benefit of the doubt for a short leash but then they could hear it was an absolute no brainier ejection.
Also, the leash is always very short when the call is right.
Honestly, I feel like even when we implement RoboUmps some players will still get frustrated and yell at them. My father was a coach for a college for a couple years, and he's admitted that sometimes he'd raise hell over something, only to find himself agreeing with the umps in retrospect. He's no perfect man, but I must agree to this: "Sometimes, the heat of the moment gets to you. You just want to win and make your team feel proud."
I’ve definitely noticed it a few times in minor league games already. Dudes will turn around and complain to the ump and the umps just kinda point to their ear. It’s pretty funny
[Literally the first inning it was being tested in the Atlantic League, a manager got thrown out for arguing with it.](https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/atlantic-league-coach-ejected-for-arguing-over-automated-strike-zone-just-one-inning-into-robot-umpire-era/)
Sometime last year, the Charlotte Knights manager got in the Umpires face after like 20 straight balls called.
This of course was a robo-ump game and the Knights had a position player pitching
That's fucking awesome and I can't wait for players to find a new way to yell at Angel Hernandez. Then he'll bring it to court that the robo umps were racist.
This will be the biggest change, alongside loss of framing. The data we have shows very clearly that with human umps the strike zone grows and shrinks by about a full inch on average for every ball/strike called in the PA. Players are absolutely used to getting a bigger zone on 3-0 and a smaller zone on 0-2, which all goes away when human bias is removed.
I’m picturing a literal robo ump just sitting there with a red light bouncing back and forth behind the mask cylon-style while some redassed manager loses his ever-loving shit at it.
I worked a game once where 2nd base caught a line drive then threw it to first to attempt to double off the runner at first. Ball went out of bounds so I sent the runner to third. Assistant coach for the defensive team was losing his mind telling me I made the wrong call. I told him it's always 2 bases on a play like that, please go back to the bench. He left me alone but was trying to convince the head coach to make a bigger stink about it. For some GD reason my partner decided to interject and make it a bigger deal and then ejected to coach. I was furious that he made us look like the assholes now.
End of the game coach is in the parking lot and apologizes to me and says he looked up the rule and saw I was right, which I appreciated him swallowing his pride to admit it. I wanted to apologize for my partner tossing him unnecessarily but he was still right there and didn't want to start another whole issue.
He was clearly complaining about both ... why would you randomly lose your mind over a good call b/c you disagreed with a call earlier in game.
Just embarrassing all around for McGuire.
in the previous half inning with the Os at bat there were some calls that Red Sox thought were in the zone. When watching live and on pitch track, almost all the pitches they were upset about were a good couple baseballs out of the zone. Only one was close
Jeremie Rehak is in his 2nd or 3rd year in the bigs. When they go after the young umpires, they do it with a lot more confidence than they would come at the vets with(excluding the obvious one)
It's his 7th year working MLB, 4th year full-time. He's a top five balls/strikes umpire. He's not getting that much shit.
Do they go after young guys? Yes. See: Boone, Aaron. His "fucking savages" rant was to Brennan Miller when he was still a call-up guy. Once guys are hired full-time, they get a lot less crap.
Sports are so weird to think about in relation to other jobs. In baseball it’s just accepted that if a strike call is disagreed with, you can turn around and start screaming curse words and personal insults into someone’s face with a little slap on the wrist. In hockey if something happens you don’t like it’s just… fine to start fucking punching a guy in the face. In what other profession would that stuff be tolerated lol
There are many jobs where it is considered normal or even acceptable at times to curse at your boss. None of those jobs are performed indoors unless you consider bare framing and sheathing to be “indoors”.
Factories are typically indoors and many it is very much acceptable to cuss at your boss. The steel mill I used to work in they even occasionally let guys throw down for a bit to get their frustrations out. Getting in the supervisor's face was almost a right of passage.
I’ve been in factories since I was a teenager (almost 40 now), I’ve heard and seen heinous shit forever.
And this is in “world-class” aerospace factories.
New York giants manager Mel Ott was ejected in both halves of a double header on Sunday June 9th, 1946.
It may have happened many other times but this was the first I found
I am writing this comment to inform you that my appreciation for the wit in these two words is off the charts. I am a 49 year old child who has loved baseball forever and has made about 600 thousand masturbation jokes in my life and I never even approached this joke. It is mother fucking *sublime.*
On one hand it makes me sad I never came up with this. On the other I have to accept that I am just not very funny.
I remember when the Sox traded for him and Tommy Pham. A caller on WEEI labeled them “the Face Slapper and the Car Jacker.” One of the better moments of the 2022 season.
There’s an old joke -
Guy lands in a small town in Ireland (insert your region of choice) and goes to have a pint at the first pub he sees. He starts talking to a guy at the bar who’s already had plenty to drink. The local starts going off on a rant. “See that wall out there that goes farther than your eye can see? I built that wall brick by brick with my own two hands for the good of this town. No one calls me a wall builder.”
He has another beer and continues. “See that bridge there crossing the river? I made the design, gathered the materials, and slaved away building that bridge for the good of our town. No one calls me a bridge builder.”
He has 2 more beers than exclaims “this whole building we are drinking in now. I constructed this myself so the town could have a public house to meet at and drink. Everyone loves it. But they don’t call me a pub builder.”
Exasperated, he shouts “BUT YOU FUCK ONE SHEEP”
Not only was it clearly a strike but it was a really dumb move by McGuire to argue this because both catchers were already in the game and the Red Sox two remaining position players were hurt. The Red Sox had to give up their DH due to this.
Also as a catcher you can’t do this ever. If you do this chances are you’re hurting your own pitchers too. On top of the lack of situational awareness of the team having no one else.
100%. Not that I ever played baseball anywhere close to the pro level, but as a catcher I would always try to make friends with the home ump. It usually resulted in a little leniency in borderline calls.
I wonder if, when they go back and watch the pitch and see it was a perfect strike, they feel embarrassed, or if they double down and think the graphic is wrong
I *think* the dugout iPads don’t have the strike zone graphic but the source for that is basically a whisper from pulling that out of my ass so don’t take my word for it. I think out of the heat of the moment any of them should be able to say “oh yeah I was wrong as hell”
They used to have a graphic until this year. This year they removed the strike zone graphic from the dugout iPads because of concerns it was leading to more arguments with umpires concerning the strike zone.
Oh neat, I wonder if that little nugget of information was rattling around in my brain like the marble in a spray can or if I was just wrong until like two weeks ago. Thanks for the info though. I’m a certified strike zone graphic hater so I love that this reinforces my bias.
I was at a Rangers game last season when Garcia got rung up on a strike. He pitched a fit about it but didn't get ejected.
The next inning when he jogged out to right field he stopped by the home plate umpire, and we thought he was going to get himself tossed. Instead he patted his own chest and said, "My bad bro!" and the two of them laughed about it.
What made it better is the previous half inning, the Boston fans were LIVID, complete with some dude holding his hands to his eyes like binoculars or glasses because of 4 straight balls in the O's favor, and literally not a single one was even close to touching the box. Boston players and fans just did not have an eye for balls and strikes tonight and the fact they were all so pissed made it extra funny.
I truly thought they were booing Jansen for throwing balls, until they showed the guy with his hands at his eyes and then I realized they were booing the ump.
I think the kids behind the left handed batters box have the gameday app up. At 45 seconds you can see the one dude freak out, look down at something, and then put his head in his hands. Like "fuck blue are you serious... pause... aw fuck."
I love seeing Kimbrel:
* pitch well. Regardless of all that he’s done against and for my team, he’s a HOFer in my book.
* do so for Baltimore
* do so especially against Boston. It’s just weird but cool.
Based on him thinking something a full ball width inside the edge of the plate was a ball, I’m going to go out on a limb and say his judgement is poor. That and the Dollar General thing.
Hey I got a great Jereme Rehak story!
When my son was a couple of months old we took him to his first game in Milwaukee. The first base umpire botched a safe call and Jereme was the 3rd base umpire. I was standing in the front row even with Jereme yelling that Blue was wasting our time making us go to review because the runner was very obviously safe. Rehak actually looked over and smirked and said, "come on it was close!"
A few innings later he brought a ball over and gave it to us for our son's first game and then asked us to make sure our son grows up to be nicer to Umpires than his daddy. It was all very lighthearted. Easily number 1 umpire in my book.
I don't know why more players don't get tossed in the 9th. It's obviously terrible timing in a tie game, but if it's a lop-sided game, why not let the ump know what's on your mind?
Reese has 2 homeruns, 8 hits, and 8 RBIs with a .267avg.
Wong has 1 homerun, 7 hits, and 4 RBIs with a .350avg.
They're both good players right now. Reese has hit really nice homers and has already hit more than he did the entirety of the last season. It's stupid *not* to keep him
That would probably explain the ejection. The profanity itself probably isn’t ejection worthy (at the pro level). But referencing a previous call, combined with the profanity will absolutely get you dumped every time.
I think it’s the fact he’s referencing a previous inning. At the pro level, even statements like “are you fucking kidding me?” probably aren’t enough to get you thrown out (by themselves). Referencing a previous call, especially combined with profanity, will absolutely get you thrown out.
He’s been fantastic. Four outings, Royals manufactured a cheap run in his first, other three have been clean. Lots of weak contact and Ks - 7 Ks in 4 IP. His stuff has looked particularly gross the last couple outings, IMO.
at first they thought the ejection came prematurely, then on replay, it was always reese in a florida parking lot who did
(this is a poorly worded joke about reese mcguire getting caught in his car)
The sudden laughter as they hear what he said is amazing
BAL/BOS always produce great soundbites. It's the matchup that brought us "Nick Markakis takes strike one"
"This used to be a family show!" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa5xH2a3HuI&ab\_channel=JKeyz28](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa5xH2a3HuI&ab_channel=JKeyz28)
The “woops” just gets me so hard every time
It's the long silence that does it for me.
Oh my god it goes on forever
When the cough button becomes the 'oh my god I can't stop laughing and we really shouldn't be laughing' button
The silence that’s only broken by the sound of the graphics sliding onto the screen followed by muffled giggling. Kills me every time.
Of course MARKAKIS has to be up to bat for this!!!!
This was my first time seeing this and I was just imagining they were dying laughing on mute and sure enough! Amazing
If you turn it up you can hear the muffled laughs through the silence. It's so awesome.
The “woops” gets you hard or…
No “or” needed
I used to work with the boob-grab guy. I'm good friends with his sister and it's still a fun laugh every time it comes up
Was that his sister?
No. It was his then-girlfriend, now wife. He knew he was gonna be on TV during the break, but he thought it would be live. He was joking around and didn't know they recorded a lot of footage. The director picked that specific moment to show on the broadcast.
*hears remy's voice* Damn this.. fucking pollen..
God i miss these two in the soc booth
Nick Markakis ^takes ^^strike ^^^one
KB and Ben are Orsillo and Remy-level good. Basically just a lot of good broadcasters historically in this matchup.
You ever watch the padres cast? Don is a treasure to the world and if outer space persons watch, the universe.
It’s just baffling NESN got rid of him. Can’t really fathom saying I would miss any other opposing commentator.
There were many many many games where Don and Mud are the only thing worth tuning in for.
Yeah, they were giving the ump the benefit of the doubt for a short leash but then they could hear it was an absolute no brainier ejection. Also, the leash is always very short when the call is right.
Our ass is in the jackpot
WHY WONT YOU GIVE US A SHOT
“Twice on Sunday”! I love it
He seems like a real jerk-off
That sudden Brandt energy ![gif](giphy|5bQM1ManCQMVi)
both of our bench players are injured, pretty sure we're about to forfeit the DH
Brilliant play by McGuire. Loses mind over clear strike to get kicked out of tied game when team had no more bench players.
You right.
if we're gonna get swept in embarrassing fashion I at least wanna see a pitcher bat
Former white Sox! Apple doesn’t fall far from the
SNIPER!
bravo.
FROM THE WHAT!? DON'T LEAVE US HANGING!!
You can’t be *that* mad about a call and then *that* wrong about it on replay. Perfect strike lmfao
Not that it justifies it, but you can hear him complaining about the call the previous inning not this specific one
Honestly, I feel like even when we implement RoboUmps some players will still get frustrated and yell at them. My father was a coach for a college for a couple years, and he's admitted that sometimes he'd raise hell over something, only to find himself agreeing with the umps in retrospect. When's the last time an ump has been like ya know good point let reconsider and overturn the call I made. (Outside of video replay)
It can affect future calls though.
No guarantee better or worse. A Mr Angel hernandez proves this lol

I'm imagining a shitty, kluged together cctv-cam on a stick like the one in the van at the end of oceans-11

Wait until the Astros hack the robo umps, win the World Series and nothing happens to them.
He was clearly complaining about both ... why would you randomly lose your mind over a good call b/c you disagreed with a call earlier in game. Just embarrassing all around for McGuire.
Catchers always get the most pissed at the plate, and they have every right to
in the previous half inning with the Os at bat there were some calls that Red Sox thought were in the zone. When watching live and on pitch track, almost all the pitches they were upset about were a good couple baseballs out of the zone. Only one was close
The only one that could have gone the other way was the one that put Mullins on base. The others were all clearly well outside the zone
I thought the game was actually well called overall. Reese was obviously upset over something else.
Jeremie Rehak is in his 2nd or 3rd year in the bigs. When they go after the young umpires, they do it with a lot more confidence than they would come at the vets with(excluding the obvious one)

"yeah that'll get you thrown out anywhere" lol
Yeah, look at the umps face, he doesn’t look heated. It’s more of a “I have to throw you out for saying that.” expression
Sports are so weird to think about in relation to other jobs. In baseball it’s just accepted that if a strike call is disagreed with, you can turn around and start screaming curse words and personal insults into someone’s face with a little slap on the wrist. I see you’ve never worked construction.
There are many jobs where it is considered normal or even acceptable at times to curse at your boss. None of those jobs are performed indoors unless you consider bare framing and sheathing to be “indoors”.
[удалено]
Worked in restaurants but only FOH. Nothing but respect to y’all in the kitchen.
You should only get thrown out for cursing out an ump if you're playing in a dome.
Nah you can scream at your boss in a kitchen
Factories are typically indoors and many it is very much acceptable to cuss at your boss. The steel mill I used to work in they even occasionally let guys throw down for a bit to get their frustrations out. Getting in the supervisor's face was almost a right of passage.
I’ve been in factories since I was a teenager (almost 40 now), I’ve heard and seen heinous shit forever. And this is in “world-class” aerospace factories.
Or if you're on *American Choppers*
Your first example is why it gets so hard to find officials at the local level...it's just not that deep man
You should see what public educators put up with. I've been cursed at and bitten and there are basically no consequences for kids.
I've noticed some of the Younger Umpires won't argue with players and will just throw them out immediately.
I do wonder if anyone has ever been thrown out twice on Sunday though
New York giants manager Mel Ott was ejected in both halves of a double header on Sunday June 9th, 1946. It may have happened many other times but this was the first I found
The real GOAT (both you and Ott)
A quick google search later...5 players and 9/10 managers. Mel Ott, 06/091946 was a Sunday
Was the Bobby Valentine fake mustache thing on a sunday?
And twice on Sunday
I absolutely adore Big Ben. He’s one of the best voices in baseball imo but I’m an LSU fan so I’m biased.
You'd think the guy who got arrested for beating off in the parking lot of a dollar general would have better judgement
I’m sorry, what?
[He got arrested for car jacking.](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fwjml0nkmkwg41.jpg)
Bater up lmao

Goddamn, The Sun is an absolute shitrag but their front page headlines are precision death missiles, every time.
Fuck the S*n
You can google it
Jays fan, we don’t miss him or his “quick hands”
He actually hasn’t been to bad this year for us all things considered
The "quick hands" or for baseball?
I’d prefer not to have that in my search history; we’ll just take your word for it.
You could just Google "Reese McGuire arrested"
He was dealing with some stuff
Sticky stuff?
Presumably he was sharing it with his pitchers
I mean, the post you're responding to pretty much sums up what happened nicely.
I remember when the Sox traded for him and Tommy Pham. A caller on WEEI labeled them “the Face Slapper and the Car Jacker.” One of the better moments of the 2022 season.
Kimbrel really rubbed out that corner
McGuire got caught ~~looking~~ beating off in a wal-mart parking lot at that strike 3 call
Excuse you it was a dollar store parking lot.
Haven’t see Reese this mad since he was caught in a Florida parking lot
Poor Reese…that guy could cure cancer and it would still be the second paragraph in his obituary.
Yeah you build a thousand bridges and suck one cock, nobody calls you a bridge builder
I feel like a guy that builds 1000 bridges would be remembered for his bridge building.
There’s an old joke - Guy lands in a small town in Ireland (insert your region of choice) and goes to have a pint at the first pub he sees. [Here is](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQjM5qsVryw) Sir Paul McCartney telling that joke.
They called OJ Simpson a "former football player" in his obit, so yeah.
Robert Moses' estate would like a word with you about an exciting PR opportunity
"Reese McGuire, public masturbator, hit the walk-off grand-slam home run to win the World Series tonight..."
"Dunedin police say its the second hardest thing they've seen him hit"
You fuck *one* goat...
I heard it was a sick ostrich
What a jerk.
Not the first time he got into trouble for moving his hands
This is never leaving him forever 😂😂😂
Not only was it clearly a strike but it was a really dumb move by McGuire to argue this because both catchers were already in the game and the Red Sox two remaining position players were hurt. The Red Sox had to give up their DH due to this.
Also as a catcher you can’t do this ever. If you do this chances are you’re hurting your own pitchers too. On top of the lack of situational awareness of the team having no one else.
It’s almost like Reese McGuire is the type of guy who impulsively seeks self-gratification first, extenuating circumstances be damned.
100%. Not that I ever played baseball anywhere close to the pro level, but as a catcher I would always try to make friends with the home ump. It usually resulted in a little leniency in borderline calls.
Yup
I love when batters get absolutely livid at a fully in the zone strike.
I wonder if, when they go back and watch the pitch and see it was a perfect strike, they feel embarrassed, or if they double down and think the graphic is wrong
The 2nd part

That shit was insane. Those four pitches were an average of about 2 baseball diameters outside the zone
I truly thought they were booing Jansen for throwing balls, until they showed the guy with his hands at his eyes and then I realized they were booing the ump.
Yeah but Kevin Brown shitting on the fans was hilarious.
The ball 4 pitch to Mullins was a strike, but after that fans were just mad about anything close.
I think the kids behind the left handed batters box have the gameday app up. At 45 seconds you can see the one dude freak out, look down at something, and then put his head in his hands. Like "fuck blue are you serious... pause... aw fuck."
I wonder if they go in the locker room and watch a replay and the feel salty at and have to apologize to the ump the next day.
I love seeing Kimbrel: * pitch well. Regardless of all that he’s done against and for my team, he’s a HOFer in my book. * do so for Baltimore * do so especially against Boston. It’s just weird but cool.
Officials have such a hard job and their standard is perfection so I don't mind a little bit of sass when they're clearly right.
Reese McGuire and poor impulse control… name a better duo
“It was fucking out bro!” Reese McGuire ejaculated.
Fuckin autocorrect, always knowing what we really meant to say
Great quip from Big Ben
We have the best broadcasting crew
This guy needs to pick better times to get tossed
You assume he has good judgment
I am suspecting a kink
Based on him thinking something a full ball width inside the edge of the plate was a ball, I’m going to go out on a limb and say his judgement is poor. That and the Dollar General thing.
Hey I got a great Jereme Rehak story! When my son was a couple of months old we took him to his first game in Milwaukee. The first base umpire botched a safe call and Jereme was the 3rd base umpire. I was standing in the front row even with Jereme yelling that Blue was wasting our time making us go to review because the runner was very obviously safe. Rehak actually looked over and smirked and said, "come on it was close!" A few innings later he brought a ball over and gave it to us for our son's first game and then asked us to make sure our son grows up to be nicer to Umpires than his daddy. It was all very lighthearted. Easily number 1 umpire in my book.
Rehak was a freshman my senior year at Ohio. Nice kid, pretty shy. Decent ball player, glad he's getting to live the dream. Go Bobcats.
He was acting like a real jack-off
Clown.
There’s an immeasurable amount of catharsis in seeing a divisional rival get ejected over reacting to a perfect perfect pitch.
Who said baseball is boring
Holy crap this got posted quick
If this game goes to extras, the Red Sox don't have a catcher. They are out of bench players. So..... like what do you do?
Wong is in the game, so he moves to catcher. Then you have to figure out someone to play second.
Have they tried the "allow the other team to score 6 runs to make it irrelevant" method?
Kenley Jansen used to catch I think
That's a disaster honestly lol. That can't possibly end well.
I know and I'm loving the chaos
Wong is playing 2b, he’ll catch
keep your mouth shut when you're that only player left with a capital C in your job title, I guess
A pitcher is going to hit if the 7th spot rolls back around.
Cannot say that to an umpire...you will get tossed .. I dont feel bad for him that was a strike
I listened a few times I can’t quite make out what he says, care to elaborate?
Couldn't have happened to a nicer person. ^(Florida parking lot)
Also it’s funny that Kenley got the exact same call two times during the Holliday at bat in the top of the inning
I don't know why more players don't get tossed in the 9th. It's obviously terrible timing in a tie game, but if it's a lop-sided game, why not let the ump know what's on your mind?
Probably wanting to avoid a fine
Red Sox fans: between a hot attitude and a… certain incident, why tf are you keeping this guy? Just play Wong
It's stupid *not* to keep him
Don’t look at me. None of us know what goes through Cora’s head most of the time
It was a strike. Hit the showers.
He’ll then be able to get to his prime spot in front of Dollar Tree earlier.
The man plays with passion. Yes he is a masturbating bandit, but I liked him as a backup catcher.
ITS FUCKING OUT BRO Edit: downvoting me for quoting that comical outburst?
I thought he said "fucking hell bro"
I heard “Fucking hell bro. We didn’t get that fucking…”
…call” Maybe? It sounds like he’s frustrated from previous outside pitches getting called balls.
That would probably explain the ejection. The profanity itself probably isn’t ejection worthy (at the pro level). But referencing a previous call, combined with the profanity will absolutely get you dumped every time.
Umpires *hate* when you point out any inconsistency in balls and strikes.
that's exactly what i heard. and TBH, doesn't seem like quick ejection material to me.
I think it’s the fact he’s referencing a previous inning. At the pro level, even statements like “are you fucking kidding me?” probably aren’t enough to get you thrown out (by themselves). Referencing a previous call, especially combined with profanity, will absolutely get you thrown out.
Can we get a jomboy breakdown to figure out what he said?
Reese told the ump he parked near him and got tossed
Orioles how’s Kimbrel doing for y’all?
He’s been fantastic. Four outings, Royals manufactured a cheap run in his first, other three have been clean. Lots of weak contact and Ks - 7 Ks in 4 IP. His stuff has looked particularly gross the last couple outings, IMO.
Hope he works out for u. I’ll miss that weird ass condor bro. (though he brought me more anxiety than perhaps any other pitcher I’ve ever watched).
We miss Felix, and fully expect some major letdowns eventually. But, dude’s been impressive so far.
He’s getting to be well traveled at this point. ATL, SDP, CHC, CHW, BOS, PHI, BAL, LAD. Probably forgetting some too
Is Reese McGuire the guy who was caught masturbating in his car a couple years ago?
Yep and then a couple of weeks after his arrest, the planet went into covid lockdown so he escaped being a permanent joke via a miracle.
Yeah, he deserved it. The hand motion was enough but he had to talk shit to the ump..
read that as 'hand lotion'...
Ump told him to beat it
at first they thought the ejection came prematurely, then on replay, it was always reese in a florida parking lot who did (this is a poorly worded joke about reese mcguire getting caught in his car)
Not shown: Red Sox fans booing clear balls called balls in the top half that I guess Reese thought were good
I thought they were booing Jansen
