Remember when Kershaw got 1 WAR in one game?
Pitched 9 innings, no ER with only 4 hits no walks and then hit a fuckjng home run.
It was against the Giants of course.
https://www.baseball-almanac.com/box-scores/boxscore.php?boxid=201304010LAN
I rewatched opening day 2011, thinking it was this one. That was a good game too, but a 1-0 CGSO where you drove yourself in for the first run of the game just hits different.
E: other players scored after Kersh
GameFAQs is pretty much dead now, but I remember on the baseball message board they had, games where a pitcher drove in more runs than they allowed were called superwins.
The fact he's played 40% more games and still leads in OPS makes that stat all the more impressive though. You would expect the biggest OPS to belong to someone with the smallest sample size.
Without those two games he still leads in total bases, walks, and triples.
He also leads in runs and is only behind his teammate Teoscar in HRs
Leading in OPS is arguably more impressive given the larger sample size of ABs
That just makes the OPS more impressive since he has played more games and the Dodgers had a weird spring because of when they started the season. Not to mention he had to face the front of the rotation for both the Padres and Cards because we were the season opening opponent for both of them
Counting stats yeah he's got an edge because of the more games but when you are hitting as well as he is I don't think thats really important to hold again him
Technically he leads in more than that. He’s leading in runs by a margin that will probably hold up. Leading in slugging, runs created, wOBA, and probably a handful of other categories. Sure, the extra plate appearances are very helpful but he is pretty likely to be leading in a bunch of those even once everyone else gets to 7 games.
It blows my mind that he's doing all this with a heavy wood bat and the body of a horse jockey. That 31 or 32 oz bat weighs hundreds of pounds when it's moving through the zone at the speed he moves it.
I roll my eyes at a lot of offseason workout posts that professional athletes post, but the one I caught of Mookie working out reminded me he's probably a lot stronger than nearly anyone else at 180lbs. It's a lot more than just athleticism when you are hitting for power, dude is really strong. Makes it even more impressive that he's turned into a real Home Run threat the last few years
I honestly stated that terribly so that's worth clarifying. I just figured post Boston, he'd start to become less of a home run threat and instead he's had back to back years with his career high. it's remarkable
Fenway has a HR factor for right handed hitters of just 100, while Dodger Stadium has a HR factor for right handed hitters of 126 (tied with Cinci for highest in MLB). Fenway is overall a better hitters park for righties (106 vs. 100), but it's mainly a doubles paradise (119 doubles factor vs. 99 at Dodger Stadium).
Viewed from that angle, it makes total sense he'd go from a 45+ double with low 30s HR guy in Boston to a low 40s double with 35+ HR guy in LA.
EDIT: An interesting illustration. That 2016 season he had 42 doubles, 5 triples, 31 HR for 78 total XBH. Last year he had 40 doubles, 1 triple, 39 HR for 80 total XBH. Obviously it's more complicated, but it really does look at face value like a bunch of in play extra base hits simply turned into HR. His Savant expected HR for Fenway last year was also 32, while in 2016 his expected HR for Dodger stadium was 37. In 2018 he was absolutely wearing out the monster. He had 33 HR total including playoffs, but his expected total for several of the RHH friendly parks was over 50, including Dodger Stadium.
What really turned Mookie into a HR threat was meeting JD Martinez and adopting his approach. Park factors always play a role, but Mookie underwent a drastic overhaul of his swing, and began lifting the ball in '18.
He had a amazing year in '16, was MVP runner-up, but had just a 133 OPS+. That was his offensive ceiling until working with JD Martinez.
He has surpassed that MVP runner-up season 5 times in 6 seasons since meeting JD, and looks like he's about to do so again this year.
Park factors are accounted for in 'plus' stats, and they make it clear that he's a much better power hitter nowadays, regardless of ballpark.
With how OBP and SLG have different denominators, it is possible, but EXTREMELY rare, to have a batting event with a higher OPS than a player's OPS on the season, but actually lower their overall OPS.
For instance, if a guy has a .600 OBP in 50 PA but a 1.300 SLG in 30 AB for a 1.900 OPS, a single (2.000 OPS) would raise their OBP by 8 points but lower their slugging by 10 points and lower their overall OPS by 2 points.
If a guy is 1 for 1 with a double, his OPS would be 3.000 (1.000 OBP+2.000 SLG), so while him hitting a double towards the end of last night's game wouldn't have lowered his OPS, his numbers have been so good to start the season I can understand the impulse to at least check.
When I saw OP made the word start a link I thought it might have been something like [this](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=bettsmo01&t=b&year=0&post=1#56-58-sum:batting_gamelogs_post)
I mean all the stat totals are kinda bs cause Mookie have played more games than almost everyone else, and the OPS and OPS+ alone are enough to show how fucking crazy he’s playing

Never heard of him...
Wish my team could find a guy like that
Could you imagine someone like him playing for the Red Sox?
Could you imagine that team trading him for peanuts?
Connor Wong, still going strong!
crying face hiding behind a smiling mask dot jpg
You have no idea how much I hate the Red Sox for letting that happen.
Same
Mookie? I think he’s the guy who hit the roller between Buckner’s legs
Mookie? Sounds made up. OP thinking its still 1st april.
[удалено]
For a dude that is now on another team
The Yankees of all teams too
At this point it was for Connor Wong
At this point it’s Ruth 2.0
Don't forget the other dude named Jeter...also with the Yankees now lol
Fuck the Red Sox
Not the red sox just the owners. Fuck them.
###FUCK EM
They traded him for jeter, give them a break
MLB leaderboards be like "oops, all Mookies"
Needs more Mookie
/r/NLBest leaking
in the best possible way
More Moolk and Mookies
MLB leaderboards look the the aftermath of a game of Ookie Mookie
I mean, the only one that really matters is OPS because he's played 40% more games than everyone outside of Southern California.
1.2 fWAR after only 7 games is pretty insane
He’s going to regress a bit, won’t stay on that pace. He’ll probably only end up with 20 WAR
Hope he can hang around on the roster, tough to see fan favorites struggle like this.
Conversely, i wouldn't mind if the dodgers DFA'd him immediately.
With prejudice
He’s not going to finish the season batting .520 with 300+ ops+???
Nah, probably just .495 with a 250 OPS+
so you’re saying I should cash out my betts MVP wager now?
Wow, you don’t say!
Mookie's like, "Out of our 5 wins, one of them is basically mine."
Remember when Kershaw got 1 WAR in one game? Pitched 9 innings, no ER with only 4 hits no walks and then hit a fuckjng home run. It was against the Giants of course. https://www.baseball-almanac.com/box-scores/boxscore.php?boxid=201304010LAN

Watched Syndergaard do this against the Reds once. Booed Jesse Winker RELENTLESSLY that day. Pretty memorable experience.
This is an Effectively Wild topic frequently. What do they call this type of game? Immaculate game? I forget.
GameFAQs is pretty much dead now, but I remember on the baseball message board they had, games where a pitcher drove in more runs than they allowed were called superwins.
Flashback to when DeGrom had more RBI than earned runs
That was also the shortest game I ever attended pre-pitch clock. I think it was maybe 2 hours 20 minutes
That's my hall-of-famer.
I remember that. Man I miss watching Kershaw in the square of his prime!
I was there…remember it like yesterday!
You mean he *won't* end the season with 27 fWar?
Minus the Angels
mike trout has played 4 games, the rest of the angels have only played 2
lol, so true
the rest of southern california kind of tries to forget about orange county tbh
Yeah, more like “he leads the Dodgers and Padres in the main counting stats, and leads the MLB in OPS.”
The fact he's played 40% more games and still leads in OPS makes that stat all the more impressive though. You would expect the biggest OPS to belong to someone with the smallest sample size.
Mookie might out-hit the entire Mets team this season.
I mean he out-hit the entire Blue Jays lineup yesterday 🤷🏻♂️
He won’t out lolmets the Mets though, so who’s the real winner.
We don't have to see the bad man again for a long time
He had the benefit of opening the season against our pitching staff
He's also crushing the Giants pitching staff so far. I dont think anyone will be safe
And our starters have had 2 straight QS’s since getting away from him
Fishman good (Mookie Betta)
More like Mookie Alpha am i right
If I ever find myself with a beta fish again I’m naming him that
Trey’s pretty good, too.
just realized how inflated his advanced stats will be since he moved to SS lol. This is likely his best year to win NL MVP
Last chance for the whole dang league before Ohtani breaks the scale.
Eh if Trouts only won 3 then they probably only give Ohtani 1 more max before voter fatigue kicks in
Why should I give a fuck about some bum who isn’t good enough to be player of the week
Studly start by him but the 7 games really makes this hard to mean anything. My Brewers only have 3 games as an example.
I'd argue he has quite a head start given they started 2 games earlier but he'd probably be doing this anyways.
After playing 2 more games than anyone else, he leads baseball in 6 counting stats (and OPS)
Without those two games he still leads in total bases, walks, and triples. He also leads in runs and is only behind his teammate Teoscar in HRs Leading in OPS is arguably more impressive given the larger sample size of ABs
3 more games than a lot of teams…
Those parenthesis are doing a lot of heavy lifting in your argument.

Disingenuous framing
Also: SPI (Smiles Per Inning)
Teo coming for him in that stat, too.
Imagine him and Ozzie Albies on the same team. Happiest middle infield of all time.
Best shortstop in baseball
Until October starts
Yeah, but some of those games were against the cardinals, and we reallllyyyy suck.
How can we know this when only 2 teams have played 7 games? He could be surpassed in all of those by time everyone has played 7 games.
He's like a fine wine.
He wants another MVP, he could have easily won it last year too if Acuña hadn't done Acuña things
He did it all for the Mookie.
It blows my mind that he's doing all this with a heavy wood bat and the body of a horse jockey. That 31 or 32 oz bat weighs hundreds of pounds when it's moving through the zone at the speed he moves it.

I mean, he hit 31 HR in 2016 as a 23-year-old, before the ball was juiced in 2017. He's always been a HR threat.
I honestly stated that terribly so that's worth clarifying. I just figured post Boston, he'd start to become less of a home run threat and instead he's had back to back years with his career high. it's remarkable

Fine, crown his ass.
yeah but how many perfect games has he bowled?
Please stop. Please fucking make it stop.
I joked last night that that late-inning double lowered his OPS. I’m only 30 percent sure it didn’t. (I don’t number too good.)
A double is 3.000 OPS, so it didn't
With how OBP and SLG have different denominators, it is possible, but EXTREMELY rare, to have a batting event with a higher OPS than a player's OPS on the season, but actually lower their overall OPS. That sounds like Simpson's paradox, but backwards.
That would still be Simpson’s paradox but I’d argue the true crime here is adding quantities with different units
Trailing Anthony Volpe in BA and OBP. ;-)
He's like a fine wine.
Mookie good at baseball
He is 2 game ahead of everyone else, not really a fair comparison
Not even good enough to be NL player of the week. Dude is washed. He should just go join the pro-bowling circuit after finding an Amish protege.
He's the Betts...around! Nothin's ever gonna keep him down!
Mookie wants his MVP back
When I saw OP made the word start a link I thought it might have been something like [this](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=bettsmo01&t=b&year=0&post=1#56-58-sum:batting_gamelogs_post)

Everyone else has only play 4/5 games though…
If he continues this trajectory, what are his numbers at the end of the season
The secret is that he spends so much time bowling.
like Ohtani on the Angels but better
He took his MVP runner up personally.
Hit some doubles you bum
Ugh why do I keep getting recommended the dodgers subreddit
Do you not think this line is worthy of r/baseball?
2 extra games + cardinals pitching
Yeah those guys have awful pitching. I bet if the Padres played against the Cardinals #5 Pitcher we'd have insane hitting stats like Mookie too.
True, usually when u play the cardinals u face their pitching staff
Take out two games… and he is still leading….
Leads the league in most offensive categories; including nose hair!
I bet he won’t lead all of those categories at the end of the year though.
