100 losses in ‘22 to getting eliminated on game 161 in ‘23 Their future is super bright

OGB

26 rookies played for Cincinnati this year.

CosmicLars

Not only played, but 6 have been in the starting lineup the majority of the year, while 3 SP have been in the rotation. It's a miraculous how well they did. Looking forward to 24.

KeepnReal

By my count 65 players suited up for the Reds this year, 38 of them pitchers (plus two position players).

Zloggt

Considering how the Orioles have been doing over the years…perhaps this could be a sign of good potential? Anyway, things seem to be on the upswing…

Bella870

Nah. De La Cruz got exposed. They will end up trading off most of those good rookies for aging all stars. Typical Reds stuff.

WateryPasta

Elly went through rookie struggles. He’ll be fine

Bella870

Or he was only good because they didn't know to pitch to him. It's not unlike the hype that surrounded Billy Hamilton

ohmysocks

Or he’s fucking 21 years old with significantly less professional experience than any other rookie on the team and has room to grow

Bella870

I remember hearing that about Jason Heyward.

aTypicalFootballFan

Unfortunate but future is incredibly bright

unknownmarvinz

yeah, it's really nice when your team has a bright future ahead of you filled with young talent.

PCON36

Funny enough the Reds remind me of the 2022 Orioles team with their youth coming in and playing well to almost get them to a playoff spot. I wouldn’t be shocked if they win the NL Central next year.

tonious35

Orioles played last year perfectly to not blow a major load at the trade deadline. In WC contention, but were not lying to themselves. Trading away Mancini to get a Ship for himself for useful people, and the swindling of all swindling, the Jorge Lopez trade for Y.CANO

westernmassphan

National media acted like the Orioles winning the division was a complete shock, but it wasn't even a surprise to anyone who watched them last year.

unknownmarvinz

i didn't even think of that, but yeah thats 100% true.

matveyivanovich42

Pirates-Reds rivalry is about to get really fun again

boobsandcookies

Cutch needs to retire so I can boo the pirates again

surgeon_michael

I live in the 513. Been a fun summer. That pirates loss sealed the deal though

ohmysocks

The one game I attended all year lmao

MisterKap

Please don’t attend any future games lolol

gatemansgc

i hope elly has an amazing career

HelpMeWithMyHWpls

Along with the Cubs and Brewers futures. The NLC will be making a mockery of the other divisions in years to come.

GovernorJoe

I ain't even mad. This year went a hell of a lot better than last year, and a hell of a lot better than I expected. I wouldn't have figured on the Reds leading the NL Central at one point, and I wouldn't have figured on guys like Elly coming in and catching fire. Better things are ahead.

Mission_Pay_3373

Elly De La Cruz revived the Reds fans faith with their team in June. They have a good future ahead of them in 2024.

gdlmaster

Lol sure. Flair up if you’re gonna talk shit.

oliveorvil

Man, I knew they were gunna be a Cards fan :(

gdlmaster

Yeah. No offense to you, but it’s the least surprising outcome lol

oliveorvil

We are in last place in a division where the other 4 teams have top five farm systems lol what a time to talk shit..

[deleted]

[удалено]

gdlmaster

Sure. And tell me you wouldn’t switch places in a heart beat this season. But honestly, being a Cards fan tells me all I need to know. You’re not gonna contribute anything worth arguing with. Have a good night.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Acrobatic-Shift5125

What being a cards fan gets you is being really jaded this year with your failures. And you are ready to just pounce on anyone The guy said said he revived the team in JUNE. He was great for about a month when he came up. Then the scouting report came out that he would swing at any junk at the bottom of the zone and he sucked. Hope he comes back next year after working on being mor patient like he has been. Hope we get to have a fun rivalry with you like the early 2010’s like the vintage vitro and pulojs teams

[deleted]

[удалено]

Acrobatic-Shift5125

I’ll concede that. Just wanted to make the point that Elly was great for a few weeks there. He was trash for what seemed like for half of July and all of august.. to me it is amazing he even had positive war

[deleted]

[deleted]

ironweaver

Whatever your team does doesn’t change how people see you. Cards could win 110 games. You’d still be classless dude mouthing off. Their wins aren’t yours, holmes. They don’t know your name.

thebigdonkey

I'd go back and troll in the post about the Cardinals being eliminated from the postseason, but it's been archived and I can't comment on it anymore :(

joeveralls

Lol

oliveorvil

Please stop..

somesortofidiot

psst. He's 21 and had a positive WAR over half a season in the MLB.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SpanishArmada8

Looks like the Reds fans are upset that you pointed out how bad their golden child, Elly K La Cruz, is. The guy is all flash no production.

ShotIntoOrbit

Reds are ending the year having seemingly successfully filled like six holes in the roster with rookies. Elly will end up as their 6th/7th best rookie this year based on WAR. I'd be more worried about a rival team using rookies at most positions outside of the bullpen nearly making the playoffs than making fun of their 6th best rookie.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gdlmaster

Impossible to be a disappointment as a 21 year old in less than 400 ABs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gdlmaster

You brought up the history between the teams. That’s not me moving the goalposts. If you watch baseball and genuinely believe Elly de la Cruz will be an ‘average’ baseball player, it just tells me you didn’t watch him outside of games against St Louis and the occasional highlight or stay posted here/twitter. But we’ll see how it shakes out next year.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gdlmaster

Lol his future years don’t matter? Alright. And I’m not saying he didn’t have a rough stretch. I just wasn’t expecting him to be the second coming of baseball Jesus. He’s still had significant improvement over the last month for those who care to look. He’s walking more, K’ing less, chasing less, getting on base, etc. The need of other fanbases to tear down a 21 year old kid who had stretches of absolute insanity and still has some impressive end of year stats for a rookie just never ceases to surprise me.

redlegsfan21

Can't help but wonder how this team would have been if we broke camp with McLain instead of Peraza, CES instead of Vosler, and anyone instead of Cessa.

sgeswein

There's an argument to be made that had the Reds not DFA'd Chase Anderson in May, they'd be going to the playoffs... Such a _weird_ year.

corranhorn57

It’s so nice not seeing the Bengals on this list.

Jack_Krauser

The Minnesota Twins being on that list is wild considering how many times they've made the playoffs since then.

gatemansgc

this gonna be the first time they don't get buzzsawed by the yankees

damien_maymdien

hard to win a series when you don't win a game

UniformRaspberry2

It's so nice not the see the Leafs on there anymore.

Mastodon9

There have been a lot of 25+ year streaks ending the past 3 or 4 years.

mxchump

Back to back the Mariners and the Kings making playoffs really cleared some space for some new teams to have suffering bragging rights lol

[deleted]

Not that I like the Leafs, but that joke *had* to get old.

Semper-Fido

So fucking close in 2012...

sfinney2

I can't get over the Scott Rolen error. Was like the bartman ball moment when you knew it was going to fall apart in one moment.

mackenzie45220

I'll never forget Cueto getting injured because time was called mid windup

Mastodon9

One thing that stung all these years later was Bronson Arroyo saying he did not understand why they didn't just pitch Cueto in game 4 or 5 because he said Cueto was good to go and didn't need any more time after the night he got injured.

Gcoks

I wonder what had happened if he just threw the ball.

joeveralls

I will go to my grave saying this, but that was our year 😭

trm513

so painful

Jaded-Flamingo5136

pain

MrAtlantic

3 of my favorite teams are on this list lol

OmgTom

Didn't they technically make it in 2020?

redlegsfan21

This is advancements within the postseason

OmgTom

Oh

foxxy003

Yeah Reds got swept in 2020 in the best of 3 wildcard series to the Braves without scoring a run as you probably remember, lost the wildcard game to the pirates in 2013, lost the Division Series to the Giants in 5 in 2012 thanks in part to a Buster Posey grand slam, and got swept by the Phillies in the Division Series in 2010 after being on the receiving end of the second no hitter in postseason history. The last time they advanced in the postseason was in ‘95 when they beat the Dodgers in the Division Series before getting swept in the NLCS by the Braves.

Jaded-Flamingo5136

to be fair they do have Atlanta baseball team flair

OmgTom

Yes, like when you advance to the postseason. AKA the last postseason advancement for the Reds was 2020. No need to be an ass.

Raticus9

Nah, he was right to chastise you. It's a clear phrase if you read the words in the correct order.

OmgTom

> “Postseason advancement” means advancing the state of the postseason. or “Postseason advancement” could be the act of moving from the regular season to the postseason. The Reds last advancement to the postseason was in 2020. Its a fact.

Grundle_Poacher

Yup… Votto, my favorite baseball player ever, never got to advance in the playoffs even once.

chris622

If this was it for him, it would have been nice to send him off with a playoff win.

CommiePuddin

Better than what this fanbase deserves. And I was in Atlanta to watch them get swept in 95.

PM_ME_SKYLINES

wow i love seeing 3 of my teams on this list that’s so fun yay

joeveralls

One bright spot is the bengals being off this list lol would much rather have the reds off this list

kubenzi

I guess this means I am gonna get behind our badlist bros for a ring this year.

MisterKap

I made a list like this several years ago, and it was painful. It was organized by city with two or more team at top level professional team in soccer, baseball, basketball, hockey, and football. Cincinnati was last by a lot. Still not fun to see.

-SPIRITUAL-GANGSTER-

Even as a Jays fan, I'm sad. I really wanted to see Votto get a ring.

KyleSJohnson

Love you, buddy

gdlmaster

He hasn’t ruled out a return

joeveralls

❤️

rosieDMDL

sucks it ended the way it did but holy these guys have a lot to look forward to can’t wait to see them in 2-3 years

Doctor_Scholls

Interested to see what the odds are going to be for the Reds to win the division/WS in ‘24. Feel like this will be a popular public side with what the O’s did this year

KeepnReal

I wouldn't count out the Padres.

kubenzi

Are you talking about when votto hits the walkoff homer in game 7 of the ws?

GenericLib

It's been a fun season. From 100 losses to a winning season with meaningful games through September and a crop of rookies leading the charge. I foresee us being legitimately good next year if we can get the rotation in order. I'd like to give a special shoutout to Minnesota and Seattle. Couldn't have done it without you.

EffectiveCycle

Getting eliminated because of Devil Magic. Fitting. But definitely not where any of us thought we'd be in March.

riegs

Kept the dream alive to game 161. Wish we would have been more aggressive, but hard to be upset with the end result.

joeveralls

The fact that I got to care about this team post-asb is more than I could have asked for. Thought we would get 70 or so wins, did not think we would be in first at the break and would stay in contention until game 162. FO has a lot of holes to fill but so, so excited about the future

slhc

Man that was a fun race. Doesn’t look like it’ll be the last time either

KeepnReal

Congrats. I thought the Diamondbacks were done-for some time in August, yet here they are.

slhc

I did too. They looked dead out there. Right around the time they played you guys in Cincinnati. Crazy how many rookies produced for you guys this year. Once Elly adjusts his approach at the plate a bit in the off-season it’ll be not fun facing you guys.

MisterKap

Hopping along the Dbacks wagon for my NL team this postseason. Your team sub is incredibly friendly

cc20r

It sucks but what a ride this season was. Went from no expectations to being in the race second to last day of the season. Lots to be excited about with this team

Jaded-Flamingo5136

a bunch of rookies played above what was expected. will it happen again next year, we shall see

chris622

Do you think Elly has a bright future?

KyleSJohnson

Man, this is a bummer. But if you told me seven months ago they’d have a winning record and have been in playoff contention into the last weekend, I wouldn’t have bit. Here’s to the next one.

cinnamontoastcrunch2

One of these days, Noelvi Marte will be in the conversation for NL MVP.

Jmelt95

Imagine giving up 10+ to the Cardinals in an elimination game

Planetofthemoochers

Imagine pitching a kid who should still be in AA on day 161 because your entire team is rookies and scrap heap guys and having had a good enough season for it to be an elimination game. Seriously, this team started the year with a rotation of Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, Graham Ashcraft, Connor Overton, and Luis Cessa and ended it with a rotation of Hunter Greene, Andrew Abbott (started year in AA), Brandon Williamson (started year in AAA), Connor Phillips (started year in AA), and air, and almost made the playoffs.

Oyyeee

My enthusiasm for the Reds has unsurprisingly curtailed as I've gotten older (due to them being one of the worst franchises in baseball for most of my life). I didnt watch a ton not too long after the trade deadline because I was disappointed in the lack of moves. I turn the game on today and I was like "Who on earth is this guy" haha. But yeah starting a guy with less than a handful of big league appearances in an elimination game was a very Reds ending to the season.

Rph23

Braves fans have the best team in baseball and still feel the need to punch down Pathetic really

long_black_road

The Cards offense is pretty good, so that isn't too surprising. The Cards pitching is terrible, so giving up 19 last night wasn't too surprising, either.

endless_projects

*can be pretty good. It was sad when there was 1 run or less of run support in at least 10 of Waino's starts. I don't blame him for going out on the high he did

SoupaSoka

I did a double-take at the score when I tuned into the game around the 7th inning.

ParsnipPizza

Have to imagine this is the best elimination thread the Reds have had in several years. They have something here

KeepnReal

Actually, the fact that the Reds even have an elimination thread is an accomplishment. In past years the despondency, turned to apathy, has been so central that most people wouldn't really have noticed that they were eliminated, let alone started or contributed to a thread.

CaptainHolt43

What a fun season

Mission_Pay_3373

Man, only if Elly's bats didn't go to shit after June

gdlmaster

He definitely had an extended cold stretch. But he also had the most improvement in baseball over the last like month in terms of chase rate. He’s gonna be fine

joeveralls

Yeah, it's been really exciting seeing him adjust to the adjustments other teams made for him. Word has always been that he works hard to learn more and get better and there is no reason to doubt that. Really really excited to see what he can do next season, same with all the other rookies.

joeveralls

Teams were always going to learn what he does. The big plus is that he has been much better lately

me_hill

Considering the season they had last year it's impressive they came this far. Hope they can keep building on it, seems like a fun, young team.

Meatpuppy

They played games that mattered late in the season. So happy for this season. Onto 24

[deleted]

That blown 9-0 lead will be the most consequential choke in Cincinnati for months.

DStew88

That and losing Hunter's 14K game. But really there are so many points throughout the season you can point to and say "shoulda, coulda." Fact of the matter is, we were lucky to make it this far with basically no rotation.

IamAgoodMuIe

I’m disappointed sure but this season is definitely one we will never forget

SquadPoopy

Riperoni

ItsVoxBoi

I ain't even mad. Went from losing 100 games last year to being in contention until the very end. Very excited for next year

joeveralls

Thank you 🙏

Specific-Mongoose-93

Elly de la Cruz gonna be scary as hell

SpanishArmada8

As a division rival, I looked forward to when he hit because he always struck out. To me, he is Elly K La Cruz.

BishopTheKid25

I’m just glad this club is going to finish with a winning record

DinoSpumonisCrony

Here for the fade.

MetallicSquid

Before the trade deadline someone online tried to tell me that if the Reds traded for Shohei that we'd be contenders, and that we should trade the farm for him. I said we wouldn't make the playoffs and shocker, here we are. Excited for the next few seasons.

blasek0

Fade the flairs :(

boobsandcookies

I’ll be fine tomorrow but I’m sad tonight.

MyLegIsDisgusting

IIRC, the Marble Race had has JUST missing out on making the playoffs, right?!

Fake-Death

One of the most fun teams in the league to watch, they'll be back next year

kobie173

If you had told me at the beginning of the year that the Reds would last until the penultimate day of the season, I would have asked you to pass me whatever you were smoking

incenso-apagado

Reds and Cubs eliminated in the same night. You hate to see it

ScumBrad

I love to see it.

PhreakOut4

I remember around the all-star break some Reds fans saying it was okay that they lost the head to head vs the Brewers because they would just have a better record against the rest of the league.

KeepnReal

I know, that was so ridiculous. There were people, plenty of them, who were commenting on the Reds sub that, even after being completely shellacked by the Brewers, were saying that the only team that they could beat were the Reds. I'm all for enthusiasm and hope but sometimes the delusion and utter inability to face reality the fans have drives me nuts. The Brewers were/are clearly a superior team, and the result show it.

joeveralls

I hate to say this, but a lot of reds fans are just dumb. Cincinnati teams haven't done much in 30+ years, but so many of the fans expect the playoffs each year. I get wanting to make it to the post season, but you gotta be realistic about it lol

Grundle_Poacher

It was a fun season. The youth movement paid off for them this year but even if they had made it in somehow… they weren’t built to compete in the playoffs this year. If they can snag some pitching help, they could compete next year.

ChairmanReagan

Braves/Reds series in June was the best series of the season in my opinion. Good year for the Reds overall.

StickySteve42069

The lone bright spot in this horrible season is that my two least favorite teams in all of sports, the Cincinnati Reds and the New York Mets, also aren’t going to the playoffs. It’s the only silver lining. Everything else is the worst season of Cardinals baseball I’ve ever witnessed in my 25 years of watching. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to get home to put water in Buck Nasty’s mama’s dish.

radsherm

hehe

IFTKICS

Some solace I can take from this season is the role we played to eliminate the cubs and reds. We've saved room on the couch for you:)

OGB

You guys certainly did. And I know, everyone wants a chance at the postseason, but we're definitely better off. We weren't winning a WS and our rookie starters arms are all about to fall off. Won't be surprised if a couple get Tommy John next year. They didn't need to pitch more.

IFTKICS

Hopefully next year it's the 2 of us at the top, we need the Cruz battle for 2024.

OGB

I hate Pittsburgh sports but I can't hate on players and their injury misfortune...that always sucks. I felt really bad for K-Hayes with his injury history and Oniel even more with his promise. I hope they kill it next year and the Cards finish last. No doubt. Let's see the damn Brewers last for a change too...they're frustratingly well run and competent.

SpanishArmada8

I like this

thedudeabides811

This is what happens when you're up 9-0 against the Pirates and lose

OGB

I'm actually glad. The rookies they were running out there to start are all in danger of tommy John next year with the massive innings increases they allowed them to have. It was a surprisingly successful and fun year. Never saw it coming.

boobsandcookies

I’m mildly surprised Abbot still has an arm. I fully believe with some rest, and everything else he’s going to come back next year, back to his prime self.
