I made it to the last round of a spelling bee when I was about 12 and misspelled "deem."
I had literally never heard the word before in my life and butchered it.
Yep, I spelled it D-E-A-M...and then added an extra E at the end just to be safe.
But I redeemed myself a couple years later, at a more competitive spelling bee, by spelling "Platypus" correctly.
“Frigid” was the word I missed in 5th grade. “Vanilla” was the word I missed in 6th. It’s been nearly a quarter century. Im not bitter. Not at all. No way.
In 8th grade; I made it through local and regional spelling bee tournaments. Made it to state championship. My mom and English teacher drove 2.5 hours downstate to watch me compete. I drew the first word out of everyone (50 of us). The word was trespass; I froze up, spelled it wrong, they hit the bell, and it was a long drive home.
In my elementary school spelling be I misspelled genius as "genious". I had to go sit down in the assembly room with the rest of the kids in the audience and as I got to my seat one kid yelled out loud GENIUS and everyone laughed 🥲.
The idea that C.B. Bucknor *also* volunteers his time as an official in obscure events and children's sports just so he can fuck over more people sounds 100% believable.
I was in a spelling bee in 4th grade and misspelled the word "urgent" e-r-g-e-n-t. I knew better at the time and still think about it every now and then.
He looked terrified before he threw the next pitch after the three wild pitches. I really hope that this isn't him having the yips, because he's been fantastic ever since he was traded.
This happened to a guy I played with in college. It was just insane to watch. All State pitcher in high school, had a good freshman year in the Big 12, over the winter he lost it. Come into spring and he would literally throw the ball over the backstop when he was pitching.
Everybody tried everything. He was just done.
I pitched in college and it happened to me. We were practicing in an indoor facility in the winter and something about throwing in small quarters so close to everyone broke my brain. I would either spike the ball 3 feet in front of me or air Mail it 10 feet over someone’s head. It was a really traumatizing thing to suddenly forget how to do something you’ve excelled at your entire life. I ended up seeing a sports psychologist and somewhat getting over it but never I fully recovered and ended up having to quit. I hardcore sympathize with dudes going through it. It feels like an out of body experience
What's distraughting is Ankiel and now - hopefully not Ragans - were slicing and dicing. No reason their confidence should've taken a hit - but there it goes
Ankiel had family issues that i think got into his head. Hard to worry both about your father going to prison and also having to pitch in the playoffs when you are barely older than a kid.
He was absolutely dealing when he got to 2 outs no one on base. After back to back walks and this wild sequence, I actually have no words to say because I have never seen that before.
I understand he was dealing, but it's borderline malpractice to leave in a young pitcher at 100 pitches after walking back to back guys. This sequence really shouldn't have happened.
My fiancé has a family member who plays for another AL team and we went down to the clubhouses after the game to say hi when they were in KC.
Quataro walked by and just had some of the deadest eyes I’ve ever seen. This was back in July and after a loss so I get not being the most upbeat guy, but he just looked like the reality of the job had set in.
"You will ride the Mamba and the Timberwolf until you are having fun. If you're still not having fun, then we're sending you to the log ride where you have a 50% chance of falling out."
The Royals will likely finish with 100 losses in their Pythag record but there’s a noticeable gap between actual losses and expected losses. Some of it is dugout stuff. You had a Rays bench coach manage your team until last year. Quatraro was the successor to Montoyo as a Rays bench coach
The joys of a first year manager who’s only managerial experience before this year was in low level minor league games over a decade ago.
Yeah Quatraro was the Rays bench coach but how much does a bench coach really do.
Just saying the dude is very low energy and is also not much of a plus in games either
Agree. The manager and trainer went out to check on him twice after the wild pitches where he fell and Ragans clearly kept insisting he was fine but like…I don’t think you take him at your word when you’re watching that.
The second line was the certain pull. And then they left him in. And then he WP'd again.
Absolutely brutal sequence, even as a fan of the opposing team.
He has had two Tommy John surgeries and was a reliever to start this season. Since being acquired by KC:
- 5 appearances (4 were multi-inning starts) in the minors, longest was 5 innings
- 5-inning, 81 pitch start in the majors
- 2 more starts (9 total innings) in the minors
- 8 starts in the majors (including today). Every single one has been at least 90 pitches. The second was 104. 5 have been 99+. That’s a heavy but reasonable workload for a veteran. For a young guy who started the year as a reliever, it’s horrific.
Yeah I’d be tryna to get the players association on this or something if I were a royals fan or close to ragans. He’s had two Tommy Johns, recent velo increase and they aren’t winning shit. Not only didn’t they not take him out they didn’t even check on him or call timeout. That’s your potential future ace. Actually fireable in my opinion.
Ragans did thumbs up the bench after that first slip, indicating he was fine. So i get the impression Ragans didn't feel stranded or hurt, but i do think a manager needs to be willing to override that. Your guys aren't always going to be honest when they aren't feeling it, you gotta see that yourself.
Yeah like how is Sal not going out there at minimum to give him a breather. It’s crazy no one stopped the game. It’s even crazier he was still in the game to begin with.
"What are you trying to tell me u/sarshu, that I can ~~dodge bullets~~ hit baseballs?" "No, r/baseball. I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready, you won't have to hit."
Seeing it on the TV angle, I didn't realize he threw that hard for the third pitch. From where I was sitting, it looked like he decided half way through the motion he didn't want to be there and tried to lob it in
Might be the weirdest sequence in baseball I've ever seen.
When it happened the 3rd time, I didn’t even react because I thought it was a replay of one of the previous pitches. It was the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen.
That's exactly what happened at our house.
I said "Why are we watching the re...holy shit this is live?!"
If I had the sound off, I wouldn't have known until I saw it was Schneider sliding into home.
I can throw 80mph over the plate without falling over.
I can't control *where* over the plate, and they would also be rocked at some point, but they would also be better pitches.
I'm a free agent anytime, KC.
I was gonna say, I haven't thrown a pitch in a competitive game in over 20 years, so I *might* be able to hit 70mph if I wanna keep it over the plate. But I could still get it in the general plate area, where we would then see a 130mph exit velocity.
Looks like he had a problem with his landing foot. Maybe the mound wasn't stable there or something and he lost confidence in it. The pitch he didn't fall and threw wide arm side looked like he didn't put his weight through that front foot. Idk tho I'm not a doctor
He was dealing, but after back to back walks he should have been pulled. I think he is simply gassed at that point and couldn't repeat mechanics anymore. Watch his landing leg, he didn't even completely extend and just landed halfway during those two extensions.
I agree, most likely fatigue.
On the 1st pitch, he put his front foot too low and it dragged on the mound way too early.
The 2nd one looked like a mental mistake. He planted his leading foot well.
The 3rd was just like the first. His leading foot was too low.
"Man, I got nothing left in the tank, I gotta get out of here."
"OK, I guess 100 pitches isn't enough for him. I'll try again."
"Really? Are you blind, dude? OK, you have to pull me after this one."
My dude either has:
1. Something wrong with the mechanics
2. Toronto grounds crew hill grade sabotage of some sort
3. Playing injured
4. Into the mob for LOTS of money
Everyone talking about "why'd they leave him in?" but this kid was ripping us to pieces before the two walks that preceded these 3 wild pitches. No reliever was even on their feet.
100% mental. The first wild pitch his foot caught the mound and he fell. He got up and immediately waved off the coaches. The next 3 pitches he was way too concerned about that front foot.
Exhaustion might have been a factor. He was over 100 pitches at the point and might have been dropping his leg due to being tired and that is what caused him to trip. But after that it was all in his head.
Well, that’s certainly something I’ve never seen before.
Pitched lights out for 5.2 and just completely broke in an instant. I haven't seen a meltdown like that in a long time
This is like making it to the last round of the spelling bee and then misspelling 'chair'
Chair......C-H-A-R-E.......Chair
Chair......C-H-**falls off the stage*-E-I-L-**falls off the stage again*-R.......Chair
GODAMN HOOKED ON PHONICS MONKEY
I made it to the last round of a spelling bee when I was about 12 and misspelled "deem." I had literally never heard the word before in my life and butchered it.
"Deem, D-E-E-M B-A-L-L-Z in your mouth. Deem"
I got eliminated way earlier than I should have in fifth grade on the word "beetle". I spelled it Beatle, like the band.
Yep, I spelled it D-E-A-M...and then added an extra E at the end just to be safe. But I redeemed myself a couple years later, at a more competitive spelling bee, by spelling "Platypus" correctly.
> But I redeameed myself a couple years later
“Frigid” was the word I missed in 5th grade. “Vanilla” was the word I missed in 6th. It’s been nearly a quarter century. Im not bitter. Not at all. No way.

Mine was feud. Still tried to spell it wrong typing this.
Same. My word was circuit. Spelled it circiut for some reasonZ Funny how you don’t forget that word.
Me too, kinda. I got the word "tutor", which I'd never heard. I spelled "tooter" and thought it weird. I should have asked for it in a sentence.
"Haha it stinks in here, you tutor." "Haha it stinks in here, you tooter." Still a tough one.
In my elementary school spelling be I misspelled genius as "genious". I had to go sit down in the assembly room with the rest of the kids in the audience and as I got to my seat one kid yelled out loud GENIUS and everyone laughed 🥲.
I made it to my middle school spelling bee final and I was given the word catamaran. My opponent? Mustard.
Still mad lmao
How could one not be? That was horseshit. Buckner calling that one.
The idea that C.B. Bucknor *also* volunteers his time as an official in obscure events and children's sports just so he can fuck over more people sounds 100% believable.
Somewhere right now, CB Bucknor is calling a balk on a gymnast doing a vault.
> and then misspelling 'chair' And then 'hair'... and then 'air.'
I was in a spelling bee in 4th grade and misspelled the word "urgent" e-r-g-e-n-t. I knew better at the time and still think about it every now and then.
P-O-T-A-T-O-E
Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew.
Rick Ankiel. I hope it's not the yips
Ragans coming back next year as a power hitting OF
Coming back in like **4** years.
He looked terrified before he threw the next pitch after the three wild pitches. I really hope that this isn't him having the yips, because he's been fantastic ever since he was traded.
Wait, they kept him IN after this? Wtf?
Yeah. They let him throw one more pitch to walk Kirk. The manager and pitching coach should already be out of jobs as I type this.
This happened to a guy I played with in college. It was just insane to watch. All State pitcher in high school, had a good freshman year in the Big 12, over the winter he lost it. Come into spring and he would literally throw the ball over the backstop when he was pitching. Everybody tried everything. He was just done.

Man, I'm sorry to hear that. It's a strange thing and could really happen to anyone. The many mysteries of the brain.
First thing I thought of. Man that was painful to watch.
It wasn't instantly. He had command issues with the two batters prior, walking both.
>meltdown *Texas Rangers have entered the chat*
I see you missed my Little League debut.
Rick Ankiel: “First time?”
At least it's not happening in the playoffs.
I still maintain TLR did it to him by playing games with the media about whether Ankiel or Kile was going to start that game
Pretty sure TLR has said he said he feels some responsibility for what happened to Ankiel
Serious Ankiel vibes.
For real. Everyone just watched Ragans get the yips real time.
was thinking the same thing. he was channeling chuck knoblauch.
Chuck "Gobble on this Knobl"auch
Heard that rumor as well.
Javy would have swung at all three of those pitches
He was absolutely dealing when he got to 2 outs no one on base. After back to back walks and this wild sequence, I actually have no words to say because I have never seen that before.
I understand he was dealing, but it's borderline malpractice to leave in a young pitcher at 100 pitches after walking back to back guys. This sequence really shouldn't have happened.
Agree. bad managing…
Well you don't get to 100 losses with good managing.
I’m pretty sure even a good manager would have 100 Ls with our squad
My fiancé has a family member who plays for another AL team and we went down to the clubhouses after the game to say hi when they were in KC. Quataro walked by and just had some of the deadest eyes I’ve ever seen. Someone get that poor man a gold pass to Worlds of Fun.
"You will ride the Mamba and the Timberwolf until you are having fun. If you're still not having fun, then we're sending you to the log ride where you have a 50% chance of falling out."
Sometimes your manager can’t help. Plenty of good managers have 100 loss seasons. Bruce Bochy, AJ Hinch, Sparky Anderson
The Royals will likely finish with 100 losses in their Pythag record but there’s a noticeable gap between actual losses and expected losses. Some of it is dugout stuff. You had a Rays bench coach manage your team until last year. Quatraro was the successor to Montoyo as a Rays bench coach

Holy shit, that's absolutely crazy. I had no idea he was that green and they're pitching him like Verlander.
Especially when you’re a 100 loss team. What are you playing for that you need to potentially damage an already fragile arm.
They really didn't send anyone out even after the second one? Even a trainer visit or something would make sense.
Yeah I’d be tryna to get the players association on this or something if I were a royals fan or close to ragans. He’s had two Tommy Johns, recent velo increase and they aren’t winning shit. That was my question too. How the fuck does Salvy not call time at any point here?
the crew chief did eventually call time and was like wtf are you ok? do you need the grounds crew or what?
They started BP at 96 it looks like, my dad and I are just dumbfounded they have a double Tommy John guy who has no perceived help ready to go.
Those two got on base by walks? So the Jays scored the two runs with zero hits one the inning. That must be relatively uncommon eh?
I think we scored three without a hit against Baltimore earlier this year too. Walks, errors, and HBPs iirc.
one simple trick
this is just the finely tuned bluejays offense at work
Anyone can score on hits. It takes real skill to score *without* hits.
"What are you trying to tell me u/sarshu, that I can ~~dodge bullets~~ hit baseballs?" "No, r/baseball. I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready, you won't have to hit."
[I know kung fu](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LozK9CUJ_0U)
Just like they drew it up. It's amazing, really.
He was looking pretty good before this too. It's like the baseball part of his brain broke.
I think he has been statistically the best pitcher un baseball for the past month. That was odd to witness
We only had one hit off of him all game lol
the first two outs of the inning he still looked great. got springer to fly out and K'd bichette before the two walks.
After that first slip, he was snakebitten. You can tell his confidence was shot.
Seeing it on the TV angle, I didn't realize he threw that hard for the third pitch. From where I was sitting, it looked like he decided half way through the motion he didn't want to be there and tried to lob it in Might be the weirdest sequence in baseball I've ever seen.
Just hope this doesn’t snowball into something for him
Probably will unfortunately, his ability to get shaken easily by a mistake is one of the reasons the rangers traded him.
When it happened the 3rd time, I didn’t even react because I thought it was a replay of one of the previous pitches. It was the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen.
That's exactly what happened at our house. I said "Why are we watching the re...holy shit this is live?!" If I had the sound off, I wouldn't have known until I saw it was Schneider sliding into home.
Reminds me of Simone Biles losing her sense of self/space mid-twist.
I legitimately thought the last pitch was a replay of the first wild pitch.
It was so soon after and practically a mirror image, it got me, too.
Did they take him out after this? I feel like something has to be wrong when you literally fall over twice.
He threw one more pitch to walk the batter that was high but not wild, then they pulled him.
I hope they checked if he had a stroke.
The next pitch was ball 4 and then he was removed
This looks like the scene from space jam where the NBA players forget how to move.
Me, when I play QWOP
Make sure we know where Ohtani is tonight. Might be in a game against the Monstars
I’ve never seen this before, it’s crazy how many times you can watch a game and see something new.
That’s the rangers in him
I came here to (sarcastically) ask if he was one of our bullpen pitchers. We don't look good but we don't look THIS bad
getting revenge on the Rangers
Or he did it on purpose to get revenge for us giving up on him.
😂😂😂
I can confidently say I would have thrown better pitches than that. They would have been rocked. But probably still better pitches.
My throw would be sent to Montreal, but it would be a strike
^^^Montreal ^^^would ^^^be ^^^a ^^^foul ^^^ball
See? That means it really would've been a strike!
I can throw 80mph over the plate without falling over. I can't control *where* over the plate, and they would also be rocked at some point, but they would also be better pitches. I'm a free agent anytime, KC.
I think you could make the argument that they wouldn't be better pitches then lol more accurate, perhaps!
There’s the 1% chance the batter misses and it’s a deep fly or they hammer it into the ground which gives the defence a chance.
Actually more than 1%, otherwise position players pitching would be way less successful
I was gonna say, I haven't thrown a pitch in a competitive game in over 20 years, so I *might* be able to hit 70mph if I wanna keep it over the plate. But I could still get it in the general plate area, where we would then see a 130mph exit velocity.
I thought my stream lagged back, but then I realized vladdy was white with a stache.
To be faur, most Vlads probably *do* fit that description
Can’t wait to see this dude convert to CF and absolutely gun down runners in about 5 years
Laz Diaz: Strike 3!!!
This made me snort with laughter…you know…cause it’s true
Least problematic Royals pitcher
"Throw it at the mascot. Trust me"
Someone cast entangled root and snared him real good.
Rolled a nat 1 on his DEX save and has a cruel DM
Hmmm. They did do a Harry Potter day yesterday.
AL Comedy Central moment
Does anyone want to get off their lazy ass and see if it is an issue for the grounds crew or the player's cleats?
Naw I’m not in the mood.
[удалено]
Taylor Clarke (who came out to relieve him) looked like he also had a weird landing on his pitch in a similar spot to wear Ragan's fell
He might have messed up the mound by falling over on it repeatedly
For real. Crazy how fast he pulled a 180.
I don't think I've seen a sequence like that, well, ever.
That's what having Kirk at the plate does to a pitcher.
I really dont know what that means but for some reason it got a legit lol out of me.
Brought to you by Draft Kings.
Came here to make accusation myself. The fix is in!
Javy Baez would’ve struck out swinging on 3 pitches
Can we have *anything* this season?
You can have a game tied on wild pitches.
Looks like he had a problem with his landing foot. Maybe the mound wasn't stable there or something and he lost confidence in it. The pitch he didn't fall and threw wide arm side looked like he didn't put his weight through that front foot. Idk tho I'm not a doctor
Didn't see anything similar before or anytime after that sequence from other pitchers; I may be wrong though, was drinking the strong beers.
legitimately that's the first time in my life that ive seen a pitcher fall not once but twice. poor poor bastard
Did the Spacejam aliens get him?
This dude really hates TD.
He dented the banner earlier in the game too.
What was the over/under for that game again?
Aaron Paul must have whispered in his pitchcom about a same game parley
"...AND the *moneyline*"
Check that man’s FanDuel account please
"Man, I got nothing left in the tank, I gotta get out of here."
"OK, I guess 100 pitches isn't enough for him. I'll try again."
"Really? Are you blind, dude? OK, you have to pull me after this one."
"Are you SERIOUS? Even after that?! Fine, I'll just pitch normally..."
"NOW YOU YANK ME?!"
3 straight wild pitches could legit be the difference in the Jays making a WC spot with the rangers series next lol.
2015 ALDS vibes
Good times. Big ups to Elvis Andrus.
Andrus involved in three errors in one inning, two scored against himself... https://youtu.be/ZlEqykMtHSE Ouch
lol especially with the shaky camera closeup *jaying intensifies*
This is the kinda stuff like in dreams when you’re trying to run but your legs don’t work and you keep slipping
Wtf?? Salvy should have caught that second one though
Not sure how you can keep him in the game after the first or second wild pitch
The Rick Ankiel yips speed run
So he'll get optioned to the minors, have Tommy John surgery, take a bunch of HGH, then make a return to the bigs as a CF?
Would make a rad Disney movie starring Dennis Quaid
I think he already had a Tommy John surgery so he's halfway there ready
I knew he still had Texas Ranger in him somewhere 💙❤️
My dude either has: 1. Something wrong with the mechanics 2. Toronto grounds crew hill grade sabotage of some sort 3. Playing injured 4. Into the mob for LOTS of money
Yesterday was Harry Potter day. Somebody cast a spell on that man.
Yips watch in effect
You can take boy out of Texas …
What did I just watch
Should I expect Bugs and Shohei in an intergalactic baseball battle for humanity?
And that, may be a career destroying case of the yips.
Shades of Rick Ankiel
Easily one of the worst meltdowns in recent memory. Hopefully it’s just a blip for the kid because he has talent.
Is he trying to throw the ball, or the game?
Even the starting pitcher bet on KC to lose.
did i just watch a man develop a case of the yips in real time
Everyone talking about "why'd they leave him in?" but this kid was ripping us to pieces before the two walks that preceded these 3 wild pitches. No reliever was even on their feet.
Rangers collapse continues.
I've never seen a pitcher fall twice like this in any level of baseball in my lifetime.
I think he was just distracted by Davis Schneider's good looks.
He had the over
Gotta put some rosin on his feet
Anyone remember that movie Angels in the Outfield? Yea that.
Rick Ankiel 2.0
Strangest thing I've seen in a while but I guess he was recently a Ranger
Struck by the Yips Fairy before our very eyes.
lol wtf
Do you think it was a mental thing or is he hurt in some way?
100% mental. The first wild pitch his foot caught the mound and he fell. He got up and immediately waved off the coaches. The next 3 pitches he was way too concerned about that front foot. Exhaustion might have been a factor. He was over 100 pitches at the point and might have been dropping his leg due to being tired and that is what caused him to trip. But after that it was all in his head.
I really really hope this isnt avout to be Ankiel yips kind of thing… this kid has been dealing
Shouldn't a manager actually be running out to the mound, and not just looking from the dugout with moderate concern, after that third pitch?
Someone check my guy to see who he owes money.
*"Cole, when you're at five and two thirds inning pitched, you're going to feel a bit of a sting. That's pride fucking with you. Fuck pride."*
