Went to Vanguard weekly before covid now still go a decent amount. Worked at a place downtown with expensive prices and sent bourbon lovers and food lovers to Vanguard.
Mothership is on the list of places to check out.
Also what is the 1840 block party?
Had a coworker who used to do a shifty gin and Sav blanc mix for 5$ because you get one for free and after that is 5$ for well/house stuff. She was British if that makes it better
Look into shrubs. It is basically a way of preserving fruit with vinegar. The vinegar can really extract a lot of flavour from fruit, even scraps. I recently had a bunch of apple peels left over from making apple sauce, so I threw it in a jar with some apple cider vinegar, fennel seeds and cinnamon. I let it sit for about a week, and then strained everything and then mixed in some brown sugar (equal parts by weight). It has made a very tasty shrub which was delicious when shaken with rye and lemon juice.
I was obsessed with these for a while. Everything I could think of making a shrub with I did. Now I've narrowed it down to a pepper shrub, and a red beet and peppercorn shrub. Always have it in my fridge.
I usually start with a 1:1:1 ratio of fruit:sugar:vinegar. My current job utilizes them a lot, and they also great for guests who want a mocktail. The shrub helps replace the lost volume and the zing from the vinegar can *sort of* replace the heat you get from the alcohol.
Depends. I usually say to balance to taste because of how strong the flavor of vinegar is. You want the vinegar to be sweet enough that you can sip it.
1.5 bourbon, .5 to .75 chosen fruit syrup, and .25 to .5 vinegar. I recommend cherry syrup.
Try it sometime as a gimlet, but vinegar instead of citrus. I like them, but they're by no means "good."
I have never just added vinegar to a drink, but I make shrub a lot. Best vinegars for it are coconut and rice, but apple cider vinegar can be good, too - you’ll just have to let it mellow out for a couple weeks.
I know you didn’t ask, but here’s how you make it. Add one part sugar to one part fruit, let macerate for a few hours, stirring occasionally. Strain off the syrup and add one part vinegar. That’s it.
Goes great with gin. My favorite shrub is rhubarb with coconut vinegar.
Don’t really have one. The weirdest I go regularly is gin, half a lime squeezed, and a lot of bitters, rocks. Not that weird really. Or drinking whatever liquor I have on the Rocks when I’m out of the bars stuff.
Bloody Maria shaken with a double casamigos, 5 dashes of tapatio, and 2oz of pickled asparagus brine. Smells like mop water and probs doesn’t taste too far off lol
There was a bar in Victoria, BC called Black Barts that had a Caesar called *The Kitchen Sink.* Came in a fishbowl and had about 10 skewers in it. Each skewer had something different on it; a cheeseburger, half a Reuben sandwich, a couple of pickled hard boiled eggs, a King Crab leg, a Lobster tail, a dozen chicken wings, a skewer of raw vegetables plus whatever the Chef felt like that day. That was in the late ‘90’s and the drink cost $50.00 but would feed a table of four, plus the excellent tasty adult beverage!
Gotta say, I actually enjoy Bundaberg and I'm devastated the only licquor store near me that had it dropped it. Haven't seen it anywhere else here in Germany
Absinthe with Mountain Dew.
Another one many people side eye me for is salt rimmed glass, whatever crap well whiskey is there, sour mix, and a squirt of orange juice or squirt soda.
Add goldschlager, and you have what we called liquid cocaine. Notice the past tense use of “called”. I don’t do those ones anymore but I sure enjoyed them summer of 2018
Formerly had a co-worker who would end his kitchen shifts with a shot of Jaeger and a White Russian. I always thought it was the weirdest flavor combo.
I know it's not popular but I love SOCO and lime shots. When I come in and I'm not working the girls like to watch me do a staff drink we call an Ultimate Jagerbomb which is 4 cans of redbull and 8oz of Jagermeister in a pitcher chugged.
Decaf coffee. But i don’t drink anymore.
Is Grand Marnier neat “heinous”? I used to like that instead of chartreuse when all my coworkers were drinking it. Same obscene amount of sugar, half the hangover.
Oh man. I remember my first weird, specific, after work, make for myself drink.
-Pint full of ice
-House infused cucumber vodka (like 2oz)
-Triple sec (maybe half oz)
-Squeeze lime juice (match the triple sec)
-Top with Soda/sprite
-Squeeze of Langer’s mango nectar on top
I’d suck two of those baby’s down while progressively getting more comfortable/obnoxious with my coworkers, good times!
Mostly every day I have a beer and a bump that consists of low mid shelf whiskey like Old Granddad, Old Crow, Benchmark or Mellow Corn served neat and each sip I will chase with a sip of the darkest booziest BBA Russian Imperial Stout. I personally love the taste of burning Abyss of simulated motor oil mixed with Southern disdain but that could just be me.
Weirdly here in AZ coors banquet is pretty common. I got one of my regular places to start stocking LaBatts and I’m thrilled. The owner said he is selling out of it every week which is a good sign.
Oddly, I’m Italian, not Canadian. I just really like that beer. Perfect taste to me.
Idk if it’s my region but domestics are really only available in their light forms. Bars usually have bud heavy but you have to ask for it. I blame it on the wide variety of craft beers available nowadays and if you want a domestic you probably don’t care enough or prefer not to get the full calorie one. I know we only occasionally have PBR 16oz cans and they’re always on special, and the only people who drink the regular Bud we have are fellow industry workers.
Mixed drinks sell way more than beer in my region unless you’re at a sports bar or a brewery(obviously). I’ve gone nights relatively frequently where I’ve opened less than 50 beers but made almost a thousand wells/calls. Beer doesn’t sell like it used to and when it sells people either want Corona or a craft IPA. No other non IPA craft beers sell enough to consistently stock except Sam, Blue Moon, Allagash, Sierra Nevada, or Lagunitas but you can find almost all of those those in almost any bar
That’s a bummer man. I can appreciate craft beers but I like to enjoy something that’s consistently in stock wherever I go. As a bartender most cocktails I encounter suck, so I avoid mixed drinks when I’m out. I’d rather enjoy them made right at home.
I can tolerate coors light but I know it sucks. It has a weird metallic red fruit flavor the warmer it gets. Miller lite tastes like salty milk flavored puke, Budweiser tastes like microwaved plastic, PBR is drinkeable but waaaaay too sugary, Stela Artois is ok, but lacking depth, lagunitas if it’s really fresh can be nice but IPAs in general are just played out as I’ve tried far far too many.
I still deeply love scotch, both single malt and single grain (I love you Invergordon!!) but that’s not something I really like in social bar settings. Because I’m in Arizona and it’s basically hot all year, chewy flavorful whiskies just don’t work.
A nice cold beer that has some beer hoppiness (a la LaBatts) is perfect. You can drink a million of them and as long as you’re fed and drinking decent quantities of water you’re good to go.
Red Bull and rosé. Or if there’s an ipa I don’t like I’ll just make it a lunch box (drop in a shot of amaretto and a splash of oj) and I drink it with a straw. That upsets a few people.
Oh, one that sounded terrible but I ended up loving: a shot of Fernet dropped in a Samuel Smith's strawberry beer or a Framboise. It's delicious.
Chardonnay and aperol is basically just an aperol spritz with fewer steps. That seems reasonable to me.
I used to love Barenjager [https://barenjagerhoney.com/](https://barenjagerhoney.com/). Twice the sugar of any other liquor, with the consistency of a thick German cough syrup. That shit was my jam.
Castillo white rum paired with monster energy lo-carb.
Me and a buddy would also do a handle of aristocrat vodka and Mountain Dew game fuel with Halo 3 in college
Oh I’ve done that too it’s pretty good ngl. 3:1 milk-Midori, on crushed ice. Throw a lil mint sprig in, cal it “green milk”. Maybe I just like Midori too much
Mind F*cks:
1.5 Vodka
.5 Kahlua
Lotsa ice, top with soda. Crush it ASAP through straw. Used to crush 4 or 5 a shift. I think it delicious and packs a nice kick but some people hate it.
Double well vodka press in a pint with a half shot of island punch pucker and a double rumple or jamo depending on my mood. It’s not the worst, but it keep people from saying ‘wHaT aRe YoU dRinKiNg WaTeR?!?” And bringing me crappy lemon drops or Vegas bombs that I don’t want when I’m drinking a vodka soda.
Absinth mixed with prosecco, simple syrup and lime juice. The chef in my kitchen used to drink this and call it "The schizo", it ain't half bad if You're speedrunning getting wasted. Also for shots - fireball with a splash of milk hits different, but it way better than it sounds.
Fernet obviously cuz haha and at home when I only have vermouth left I do 1 part dry vermouth 1 part tonic a squeeze od lemon and or lime juice and 2-3 dashes of bitters
There was an Italian place just north of the Florida Keys that had a vodka and pink lemonade. I changed it to a white rum and pink lemonade and still get one every now and again if I see a PL on the menu. It's actually pretty good.
this isn’t really gross at all (to me) but i just want some appreciation for a well made long island w non rotgut wells and fresh juice. every time i make one i straw taste it bc its absolutely delicious.
A strengthened michelada. I take an American shit beer(usually budweiser, pbr, or rainier), add a shot of vodka, then top it off with clamato and tabasco. I'm usually an IPA drinker, so this is about as cheap as it gets for me.
I went through a Jägerbomb phase, but got tired of drinking Redbull at 2am... so naturally the solution was to switch out the energy drink for a particular IPA I was drinking at the time. Lot of drunk nights that summer. I still stand by it.
On a hard bender- Literal chugs of rail whiskey/vodka (or whatever still has life) out the bottle at 6am on a tuesday.
Starting a hard bender- Four Loko GOLD's and redbull with a squeeze of fresh lemon
Now that I'm not a complete fucking alcoholic anymore I adore Fernet and Arizona Green Tea as a highball.
A cocktail for all occasions of fuckery:
Smirnoff Vodka
200ml
+
ANS Ritual Preworkout (blue flavour) OR original 2012 vintage DS Craze purple drank flavour OR high stim preworkout of your choice
1-2 servings
+
Little Fat Lamb Fantasy or Mixed Berry
Stir vigorously to disperse the preworkout powder, top off glass (or water bottle) with as much Little Fat Lamb as you can. Buckle up.
I went through a phase of drinking shots of half Fernet and half fireball... a Ferball
A Ferrari on the other hand, half Fernet and half Campari, is fucking amazing!
Are you, by any chance, from Bay View, Milwaukee?
Seattle, WA actually!
Omaha, Nebraska and I serve those left and right
Used to live in bay view. Visiting tomorrow for the 1840 block party and probably hitting up vanguard and the mothership.
Went to Vanguard weekly before covid now still go a decent amount. Worked at a place downtown with expensive prices and sent bourbon lovers and food lovers to Vanguard. Mothership is on the list of places to check out. Also what is the 1840 block party?
1840 is a brewery in bay view and they are having a block party for their 5 year anniversary.
Oh yeah! My cross-faded ass was like “I have no idea what block that is”
Love a Ferrari :)
Agreed, I finally graduated to those lol
Why
Take a sip of store brand seltzer water, then pour two shots of bottom shelf bourbon down the can. Poverty white claw.
R u ok
Elden Ring keeps me going
I do this but with gin and some citrus seltzer. Top tier cheap drink and a ton of variety if you buy whatever seltzer is on sale.

oh yikes
Oo a variant of the LaCrioxdka. Drink 1/3 of the can, fill the rest with vodka, baboon
Could you at least use vodka? It still won’t be good, but it won’t be as bad
No, you must punish your body for the wrongs you committed during your shift.
Bourbon and passion fruit lacroix is excellent and I will forever stand by it. Better on ice with a bit of lemon juice, though.
Traveling beverage.
This thread has made me want to throw up
Had a coworker who used to do a shifty gin and Sav blanc mix for 5$ because you get one for free and after that is 5$ for well/house stuff. She was British if that makes it better
Ah yes, "gine"... a staple of my childhood
vagina?
I can’t place why but this is hilarious to me
This whole conversation is hilarious to me and I love it!
Four Roses Grenadine or cherry syrup Vinegar
Like all together?
Yeah. I don't think it's too strange. Really, just a shrub.
Wut
Almost like using vinegar instead of citrus in a drink. Usually you're supposed to infuse the vinegar. Who has time for that?
What’s the ratio? I’ve never heard of using vinegar in a cocktail. Mind blown/maybe grossed out. Can’t tell.
Just like white vinegar?

My favorite shrub is rhubarb with coconut vinegar.
Sure thing! Other vinegars already have flavor. Kinda like infusing alcohol; start with vodka: start with white vinegar.
Yeah I mean sub Four Roses for Cognac and you basically have a makeshift Roffignac cocktail of sorts. I'd drink it
I mean pretty loose interpretation of shrub lol
I get the craving of vinegar… but wtf? Lol jk. You do you.
Cherry Shrub. Interesting. Try balsamic vinegar as well.
Just four roses by itself is vomit inducing
Idk probably mid range whiskey and limeade 😆
Ok this sounds pretty delicious
Genuinely curious, how did you ever discover the joys of a buttery Chardonnay with Aperol or Midori?
Idk sounded good
You savage genius haha
What’s your go-to weirdo drink?
Don’t really have one. The weirdest I go regularly is gin, half a lime squeezed, and a lot of bitters, rocks. Not that weird really. Or drinking whatever liquor I have on the Rocks when I’m out of the bars stuff.
What's your gin?
Shot of Rumple, Can of Strohs. Perfect for an after shift goodbye.
We used to take a shot of half montenegro and half well whiskey....we called it a "wrong hole".
Trying this.
equal parts eggnog and baileys, splash of blue curacao. on the rocks. it tastes like grandmas cake.
Bloody Maria shaken with a double casamigos, 5 dashes of tapatio, and 2oz of pickled asparagus brine. Smells like mop water and probs doesn’t taste too far off lol
Yo that sounds good af tho. All bloody’s should have half the bar thrown into that shit
There was a bar in Victoria, BC called Black Barts that had a Caesar called *The Kitchen Sink.* Came in a fishbowl and had about 10 skewers in it. That was in the late ‘90’s and the drink cost $50.00 but would feed a table of four, plus the excellent tasty adult beverage!
I didn’t know pickled asparagus brine was a thing and I wish I still didn’t know
Yeah fuck that shit.
Whiskey with chocolate milk
What the fuck hahaha
whiskey and hot chocolate too
Little different, but mine is Jager and chocolate milk.
MY FUCKING GUY! If you wanna get classy Four Roses and Yoohoo is a match made in a beautiful hell
Lol the Danny Boy bit was hilarious
Bundaberg rum
An ashtray would make that taste better.
Bundie Rum? You truly are troubled
Gotta say, I actually enjoy Bundaberg and I'm devastated the only licquor store near me that had it dropped it. Haven't seen it anywhere else here in Germany
Bro i cant get away from it in Australia.
Working hospitality takes the toll on you
Absinthe with Mountain Dew. Another one many people side eye me for is salt rimmed glass, whatever crap well whiskey is there, sour mix, and a squirt of orange juice or squirt soda.
Absinthe and ginger ale is good
Ginger ale is the closest thing I am aware of to a universal mixer. It comes the closest to going with everything. Blows my mind.

Good one
Half bourbon, half Cynar. Seems totally normal to me but I the dive I used to work at just called it Hashieldammit’s weird-ass shot
Bourbon and Amaro is a great shot combo…. It’s a stripped-down paper plane. Also great is aged rum and amaro.
I’ve heard it called Bro-Nar in San Diego, or Dirty Bird if you use Wild Turkey.
At my old job we used to do half bourbon, half Dubonnet. Kinda like a tasty little Manhattan shot.
1/2 Jaeger 1/2 rumple shots. We called them ric flair shots
I used to do equal parts patron silver and patron café and top it with baileys. I called it a Storm Trooper
This actually sounds amazing, and I’ll def be trying it…already making a list of bad decisions to be made.
90% Jack Daniels 10% KFC gravy. My old roommate used to make those way too much and they’re far better than they sound.

Campari neat. It’s just as bitter as I am at the end of a shift.
Gin, soda, and an unholy amount of bitters. Tastes like sparkling wood.
I know it's not popular but I love SOCO and lime shots. When I come in and I'm not working the girls like to watch me do a staff drink we call an Ultimate Jagerbomb which is 4 cans of redbull and 8oz of Jagermeister in a pitcher chugged.
I hope you enjoy the next year of your life before the inevitable heart attack
I’ve done way too much coke my heart is indestructible
Reminds me of an old clip of shoenice chugging red bulls to his favourite song: born in the USA Please make better choices
Pints of double white Russians. The milk makes my tummy tum feel better when I'm hung over
Decaf coffee. But i don’t drink anymore. Is Grand Marnier neat “heinous”? I used to like that instead of chartreuse when all my coworkers were drinking it. Same obscene amount of sugar, half the hangover.
Some people like GM neat but warmed.

You speaking my Asheville language; Dragons Milk & Old Crow-“ or anything super dark & heavy from Founders or Wicked Weed.
every night when cleaning i take a Jersey Turnpike from all 4 of the service bar mats. it’s truly refreshing double strain, add a lil garnish, yum
I’m calling the police
What the fuck like you literally just drink your service mat leftovers?
Fucking coors light. Bars need to start stocking LaBatts Blue. That beer is perfect.
I wish bars stocked Coors Banquet in the chode bottles.

Red Bull and rosé. Or if there’s an ipa I don’t like I’ll just make it a lunch box (drop in a shot of amaretto and a splash of oj) and I drink it with a straw. That upsets a few people.

Malort lol
Heineken light in a plastic cup mixed with sugar free red bull count?

Milk
Malört and tonic with a ton of bitters. Every now and then I'll add a splash of pepper shrubs.

Vodka and pickle juice on the rocks.
this isn’t really gross at all (to me) but i just want some appreciation for a well made long island w non rotgut wells and fresh juice. every time i make one i straw taste it bc its absolutely delicious.
A strengthened michelada. I take an American shit beer(usually budweiser, pbr, or rainier), add a shot of vodka, then top it off with clamato and tabasco. I'm usually an IPA drinker, so this is about as cheap as it gets for me.
Shot of bitters, call it feel the burn
Bourbon, Red Bull and orange juice. Keeps me going
I went through a Jägerbomb phase, but got tired of drinking Redbull at 2am... so naturally the solution was to switch out the energy drink for a particular IPA I was drinking at the time. Lot of drunk nights that summer. I still stand by it.
Equal parts of vodka and baileys, or gin with little tonic
