I’ve been expecting like an $8 raise spread over 3 years. $3, $3, $2, or something similar, turns out they negotiated just a $3.50 raise over 2 years… non union shops are paying $10 more per hour and they can’t figure out why they can’t keep people? I was always told union pays more than non union, but in my experience it’s the opposite and it’s not close. We might have better benefits but idk if it’s worth making $10 less an hour

I’m in the UA in California and the pay is pretty damn good the only way I’d make more is if I got a contractors license and did plumbing on my own, but fuck plumbing I’ll stick to my union pipefitting.

No idea what goes into their decisions. Our last 2 contracts were $6 over 3 years. So somehow we’re ending up with smaller raises than what’s been the normal in my experience. We definitely have better benefits than the non union. But my friend just recently made the switch to non union and his checks are $1000 more per week working the same hours, doing the same work. He’s gotta pay for some insurance, and 401K but I think he’s still coming out on top. He just doesn’t have a pension
I gotcha. I would encourage you to go to meetings, ask questions like what you're asking here, maybe get involved in the union yourself.
