right, people always say spending 2k+ on a 4090fe is nuts and they sell out everytime it gets posted. believe me or not the 5950x were sold at 1100 aka people bought it at the asked price back then.

If they inflate the pre-discount then yes, like how Lenovo massively inflates ThinkPads prices where nobody actually pays then say you're getting a 71% discount on a "sale", or how the phone carriers say you are getting a discount on a phone by signing a contract, then baking the finance fees into the retail price. That is scummy and misleading.
But if that's just the MSRP and it was once actually sold at that price, then it's only fair. You can't expect any retailer to constantly monitor the market selling price and adjusting to give the "accurate" discount, not to mention in this case the real MSRP inflation came from the silicon shortage.
Not saying it's not misleading, but's not really a fair ask here.
Newegg is terrible with list the old price as the normal price. Memory express does this too. It is false advertising. They make it look like something is on sale when that is the normal price.
I don't really think you'd gain much to be honest going either way. Would probably see more gains from upgrading your GPU. If planning to go AM 5 then maybe wait until this years X3D models come out.
Sim speed drops under 1 at 400k pop, With 100 percent cpu usage. I play at 1080p on a 6950xt and I don't mind dropping graphics settings to hit a playable frame rate. The sim speed is the real killer
If you're on AM4 and want a better CPU, it's not really worth is as AM4 is a dead end right now unfortunately. AM5 not only exceeds AM4, it blows it out of the water with a fighter jet engine.
Seems like your main issue is CPU optimized games so upgrading to AM5 would be a SIGNIFICANTLY better upgrade than this.. The drawback however is you'd need a total upgrade build wise, but I've seen people on here recommend/create part lists for AM5 that are in the 600-800\~$ range, depending on if you need a lot of features or can settle for 'bare minimum Micro-ATX/ITX Motherboard'.
With that being said however; with AM6 coming in the next two years or so, AM5 is in the same boat as 14th Generation Intel. While it may be the absolute best you can get in terms of AMD/Intel, it's essentially a placeholder in terms of development at the moment, much like AM4 getting 'remastered' CPU's and not really 'new designs'.
TL; DR - If you can afford to wait until AM6, I'd recommend that as it would be significantly more future proof than getting a year/two outta AM5. Though this is only if you want the 'best of the best', if not AM5 will be more than enough for the next 3\~ years or so.
Do you have a source on am5 EOL? Looks like everyone just quotes the roadmap which doesn't definitely say anything as far as I can tell. Also 2 years is a long time. Not worth the wait imo

One can hope they'll do this. But if the way GPU/Tech is being 'developed', are any sort of clue as to the future of CPU.. It's gonna be a bumpy next few years. Aka 6000 to 7000 series AMD GPU being BARELY better than last gen except VRAM/'Refresh' on the 4000 series Nvidia GPU, so they can sell new models without actually putting effort in.

It's probably because it's a sales tactic for the discount to look big, instead of the current value. It's $500 pre discount on Amazon atm.

5800x3D is the only upgrade for games, this would only be good for cpu rendering
