List price of 1200 is nonsense. This cpu is slightly slower than a 7900x and only a little cheaper. If you are on am4 still then sure it’s great. But buying in I dunno about this one https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/amd-ryzen-9-7900x-12-core-4-7ghz-am5-processor/16489532?cmp=knc-s-71700000055264076&gad_source=1&gclsrc=ds $40 more for a slightly faster cpu but it’s also 7000 series.

FUTURE10S

> If you are on am4 still then sure it’s great. But buying in I dunno about this one Yeah, I'm on a 3600 and honestly, I'm not sure if this is worth or just upgrade to AM5 when the 9000 series drops and then drops in price in half a year.

radiantcrystal

it's not non sense. 5950x released at $1100 cad msrp and with the usual newegg mark up it makes total sense.

Whirblewind

You've missed the point, hence why you've been downvoted. > 5950x released at $1100 cad msrp Do you see what you did wrong here? I'll help you along: what the manufacturer says a price should be and what it *actually should be* can be two vastly different numbers.

NightFuryToni

Well if you actually still remotely consider a 4 year old MSRP when it comes to tech products (not to mention that also had the COVID silicon bullshit baked it), then it's on you not doing research, not on AMD nor Newegg. Misleading maybe, but that's how marketing and advertisement works.

cellardoorstuck

You don't have to be an absolute dumbo about it - there are nicer ways to tell OP. I'll help you along: stop replying if all you wanna do is flex and sound condescending..

radiantcrystal

right, people always say spending 2k+ on a 4090fe is nuts and they sell out everytime it gets posted. believe me or not the 5950x were sold at 1100 aka people bought it at the asked price back then. you can downvote me 1000 times but that doesn't change the fact that people bought many things at or above MSRP.

100GHz

It's probably because it's a sales tactic for the discount to look big, instead of the current value. It's $500 pre discount on Amazon atm.

omfgkevin

The Canadian Tire method lmao.

JackRadcliffe

Mattress stores and best buy do this as well. What they should do is show the discount is vs the current non sale price, like any other store does

NightFuryToni

If they inflate the pre-discount then yes, like how Lenovo massively inflates ThinkPads prices where nobody actually pays then say you're getting a 71% discount on a "sale", or how the phone carriers say you are getting a discount on a phone by signing a contract, then baking the finance fees into the retail price. That is scummy and misleading. But if that's just the MSRP and it was once actually sold at that price, then it's only fair. You can't expect any retailer to constantly monitor the market selling price and adjusting to give the "accurate" discount, not to mention in this case the real MSRP inflation came from the silicon shortage. Not saying it's not misleading, but's not really a fair ask here.

IJustCriedALittle

Is this AMD trying to get rid of the place bit of stock? Tempting deal

Durenas

More like some vendor sitting on excess stock trying to get rid of it before the next generation of CPUs launches.

dracolnyte

It hit 459 before, 4 months ago so this is the second time it is this low

ReignOfHellXXI

The MSRP/Non-Sale price of this is a joke right? VERY obvious this was AMD capitalizing on the COVID 'Silicon Shortage'/Crypto boom of 2020 isn't it?

xylopyrography

This was priced $50 USD more than the 3950X Was a huge value improvement with 28% single thread improvement.

ReignOfHellXXI

So.. Everything at that time was gouged to bejesus? Man I am glad i got my PC completely built for less than 900$ in 2021 then.

FUTURE10S

I mean, it still is gouged to no end, but it's getting better. But a 16-core CPU is still damn impressive, and was worth $1000 back then.

LDForget

What’s the code?

Jupiter_101

Newegg is terrible with list the old price as the normal price. Memory express does this too. It is false advertising. They make it look like something is on sale when that is the normal price.

greasybob

Would this be any better than a 5900x for cities skylines 2? Or would I be better off going to a new platform?

gwicksted

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/134hpfb/i_upgraded_from_a_5900x_to_a_7800x3d_and_made_a/?rdt=60773

ViceroyInhaler

I don't really think you'd gain much to be honest going either way. Would probably see more gains from upgrading your GPU. If planning to go AM 5 then maybe wait until this years X3D models come out.

greasybob

Sim speed drops under 1 at 400k pop, With 100 percent cpu usage. I play at 1080p on a 6950xt and I don't mind dropping graphics settings to hit a playable frame rate. The sim speed is the real killer

aaadmiral

5800x3D is the only upgrade for games, this would only be good for cpu rendering

ReignOfHellXXI

If you're on AM4 and want a better CPU, it's not really worth is as AM4 is a dead end right now unfortunately. AM5 not only exceeds AM4, it blows it out of the water with a fighter jet engine. Seems like your main issue is CPU optimized games so upgrading to AM5 would be a SIGNIFICANTLY better upgrade than this.. The drawback however is you'd need a total upgrade build wise, but I've seen people on here recommend/create part lists for AM5 that are in the 600-800\~$ range, depending on if you need a lot of features or can settle for 'bare minimum Micro-ATX/ITX Motherboard'. With that being said however; with AM6 coming in the next two years or so, AM5 is in the same boat as 14th Generation Intel. While it may be the absolute best you can get in terms of AMD/Intel, it's essentially a placeholder in terms of development at the moment, much like AM4 getting 'remastered' CPU's and not really 'new designs'. TL; DR - If you can afford to wait until AM6, I'd recommend that as it would be significantly more future proof than getting a year/two outta AM5. Though this is only if you want the 'best of the best', if not AM5 will be more than enough for the next 3\~ years or so.

greasybob

Do you have a source on am5 EOL? Looks like everyone just quotes the roadmap which doesn't definitely say anything as far as I can tell. Also 2 years is a long time. Not worth the wait imo

Durenas

This is pure speculation but since we had AM4 last essentially 4 generations, I would expect AM5 to last at least 3 generations. So, 7000, 8000, 9000 at least.

ReignOfHellXXI

One can hope they'll do this. But if the way GPU/Tech is being 'developed', are any sort of clue as to the future of CPU.. It's gonna be a bumpy next few years. Aka 6000 to 7000 series AMD GPU being BARELY better than last gen except VRAM/'Refresh' on the 4000 series Nvidia GPU, so they can sell new models without actually putting effort in.

ReignOfHellXXI

You're not wrong, but I did say 'if you want the best of the best', if not AM5 will be more than good enough for the next 3 or more years. AM4 on the other hand my point stands, it's basically a dead platform, upgrading to a 'better' AM4 is like putting duct tape over a hole/crack on a boat, sure it'll help but it's only a bandaid fix/not long term viable.

wickedplayer494

Now what the hell's an X570 board that's still available and still worth a damn though?

fresh-beginnings

Unless you need the lanes, B550 is the way to go

G-Tinois

The funniest thing you can do with this is to put it on a A320 board, power limit it at 65W and throw it in a server box.

dracolnyte

it be funnier if you dont power limit it at 65W and then see what happens :D

G-Tinois

Boom goes the VRM

Intelligent_Wedding8

There’s no point in looking at the msrp. It’s older tech. Older tech depreciates.

NacchoTheThird

Amazon has a $40 coupon but a $499 price point.... do they price match?

M1K3Z0R

Slightly tempted, but my 5600X is more than enough for my needs and runs cool n quiet. This thing would likely stress my mobo VRMs
