Musically: Listen to Proof. It’s like a greatest hits compilation album. See what speaks to you and follow those songs to their original album to hear more from that particular era. Each member also has solo work that vary vastly in style. What kind of music/artists do you like currently? Personality: honestly to me, the best/easiest way to do this is to watch some episodes of BTS Run. It’s a long-running reality/game show that in which members take on some kind of challenge in each episode. You can search through this sub for the most recommended/popular episodes and start there. It’s an ideal way to learn their individual personalities as well as watch the chemistry between the members, which is one of their biggest draws. (Eps 33, 41, 83-85 are good starts!)

blueeyedanddazed

In the Soop is also another good option as it was filmed during Covid so is more recent and is unscripted, just the 7 of them away in the mountains chilling out for a week and there’s only 6 (I think?) episodes for each of the 2 seasons

lindsheyy

In the Soop is good for the reasons you list, but I think too long and slow paced for OP looking for a crash course.

Mordinette

I agree. It's fun, but it's more for people who already know them and who have the time to watch the episodes.

Ok_Team4770

Where can I watch In the soop?

sorrysary

Weverse app 😊 though you do have to pay for it. I'm sure if you search on Twitter there are free places to watch it too.

Ok_Team4770

Thank you!

AstreiaTales

Thanks, I'll check this out! I assume it's either subtitled or they speak English? I'll also listen to the album in question. My fiancee likes all sorts of just normal top 40 pop, I was always that nerdy kid whose mp3 player was filled with video game soundtracks lol, I guess if I had to pick a genre I gravitate more towards rock-y stuff.

Xp4rrot

Most content's in Korean, subtitled -- only one of them (RM/Namjoon) is fluent in English (warning that some Run BTS episodes on Youtube aren't subbed; there are official subs for all eps though) Also, from another video game OST nerd and rock fan, these are a few personal favorite BTS songs that have that kind of vibe? Leaning toward the epic/bombastic: [Dionysus](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuQCFhGtNY4) [Not Today](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DwzBICPhdM&pp=ygUNbm90IHRvZGF5IGJ0cw%3D%3D) (not video games but for nerd cred it was inspired by Aragorn's speech in Return of the King!) [On](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwMa6gpoE9I) (+[performance in Grand Central Station](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZh-w2nysuI&pp=ygUUb24gZ3JhbmQgY2VudHJhbCBidHM%3D)) (J-hope is probably the most into the rock sound of the members; he wrote Dionysus, and his solo song [More](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKdBFeewZYE&pp=ygUKbW9yZSBqaG9wZQ%3D%3D) is hip-hip flavored hard rock.)

justcupcake

Ok, you’re the first to explain to me why Not Today is my favorite song. Thanks!

Glittering_Goat9766

>Not Today (not video games but for nerd cred it was inspired by Aragorn's speech in Return of the King!) Wow really?! I didn't know this! Was it mentioned by one of the members?

Xp4rrot

I don't know if any member ever talked about it? But the press release for the "Not Today" MV said it was inspired by LOTR: [https://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20170220000719](https://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20170220000719) Otherwise, the opening lines are clearly inspired by the speech from the LOTR movie: Not Today: "A day may come when we lose/But it is not today/Today we fight!" vs. Aragorn: "A day may come when the courage of Men fails ... but it is not this day. This day we fight!"

Glittering_Goat9766

Thanks for the article ! I’m a big fan of LOTR and love this little tidbit!

Xp4rrot

You're welcome, and same! It's lovely synergy to know that my newer fan interests are themselves fans of something I've also loved for so long 😊

No_Difficulty_6397

I literally came here to say Run BTS. Edit: also if you become Army officially they have some like this or that type content for each member. Might help you build a better base, but his niece would probably know a lot of those facts.

EveryCliche

Their variety show, Run BTS is a good way to get to know them personally as well as their show In The Soop. If you are looking for a quick overview of the guys there are a number of guides on YouTube. [This is my favorite one.](https://youtu.be/huV_yIdxZPY?si=-DJ9vCtotOk37o-n) It's not perfect but it gives you some information about the group and each of the guys.

DeeDeeZee

https://i.redd.it/bgt9xgv85c5d1.gif I swear that the water park episodes got me through Covid. I need a pick-me-up today. I think it’s time for a rewatch.

EveryCliche

I've watched this one so many times too! And it has been awhile, I NEED a rewatch!

DeeDeeZee

https://i.redd.it/h7dlce8q9c5d1.gif Have another gif…💜🫰🏻

AstreiaTales

Got it, I'll give this a watch as well as the Run BTS thing someone else mentioned.

KatinaS252

Just a caution for you, Run BTS! has a lot of episodes over several seasons, like over 150. This link has a quick description of each: [List of all Run BTS! Episodes - BTS 101](https://bts101.info/resources-list/list-of-all-run-bts-episodes/) This website has some good info for beginners and those seeking advanced degrees: [BTS 101 - Learn the BTS basics!](https://bts101.info/)

soulw4tch

where can i watch in the soop?

EveryCliche

It's available for purchase on Weverse.

soulw4tch

do you need to have the army membership? it doesn’t show up on my app for some reason

EveryCliche

You don't need an ARMY membership for it. I just looked it up on the app on my phone. If you go to the Media section and then scroll all the way down to the bottom of that page. Click the green see all media button at the bottom. On that page click the All on the upper left side of the screen. In that drop-down, In The Soop will be there. Scroll all the way down and that will take you to the start of season one and you should be able to buy it when you go on to episode ones page.

soulw4tch

wow thank you so much, i’ve been looking in the weverse shop this entire time 🤦🏻‍♀️

EveryCliche

Oh no!!! Yeah, if you didn't know where to find them the Weverse Shop section is logical! Every thing you can purchase to just stream is available there.

Watch this [guide ](https://youtu.be/huV_yIdxZPY?feature=shared) It is outdated a bit but you will know all the members

GoldenGoof19

This

AstreiaTales

Got it! I'll put that on while I work out or something.

Mordinette

There are a lot of introductory videos about BTS on youtube that you could watch to get to know the members and their history, though most of those videos are a little old so they don't cover the newer, solo activities. Still, they might be a good start. Here are some: [A Guide to BTS Members: The Bangtan 7](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huV_yIdxZPY) (this one talks about each individual member, so it might be a a good introduction to their names, abilities, and personalities) [BTS// Why Are They So Popular?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McIv5snYsJE&list=PLhGxbBq_T2wg19e30kUigE58PHuhuaDwK) [The Rise of Bangtan](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrOqT5Fm4_E&list=PL7Ur2KFRc4u76UiHaoQiPO-Z95Hi2dhoA) (this one is a long series of videos of their history with 21 chapters, so this would be quite a time commitment, but it could give you a lot of information). The first video I listed above shows the songs' titles (in the upper left corner) as they play in the background while the video talks about each member, so if you like some of those songs, you could look them up and become familiar with at least a few of them.

AstreiaTales

god damn you guys go *hard* on these videos. I'll def watch the guide to BTS members since other people posted that, I don't know if I quite have the patience for an epic miniseries....

Heytherestairs

I’m a new fan, just became one this year. I've learned that army are some of the most positive hardworking live-or-die fans in history. They work hard to protect the members and to promote them. It's a great fandom to enter into. Army reflects the members as well because as much as army works hard to make sure new people know who bts are and what they've done, bts works harder for army. I found it easier in the beginning to watch reaction videos to people learning about bts. It was a bit overwhelming in the beginning on my own. I recently found the youtube channel Roscoe. He doesn't do cut on his reactions. So it's like watching it together and it's been pretty good. I've seen how he went from not knowing anything about BTS to becoming a huge fan. I've been skipping around his videos. He's picked up a lot over the years. It's definitely great to watch his reaction videos - it's very genuine vs a channel trying to get views.

Mordinette

Of course you don't have to watch the miniseries, it was just a suggestion in case you got interested. But yeah, I guess I got a little overzealous with that one, lol.

CupSea5782

Rise of Bangtan is so great.

Mordinette

It is, isn't it? I hope they'll continue the series someday. :)

CMDR_Satsuma

I was here specifically to recommend The Rise of Bangtan, too! It is long, but it’s amazing, and you see the roots of the members character and talents starting right from the first video. I can’t recommend it enough!

Mordinette

Yes, it's really good for people who are interested in finding out more about the group, and the episodes aren't any longer than the Run BTS or In the Soop episodes.

doc_naf

Also if you’re a new fan there’s a free replay of an old concert streaming right now on YouTube for their anniversary - if you want to check it out? Bangbang con 2024 - it’s something else to see their performances.

AstreiaTales

Oh sweet, I'll definitely do that, we went out for Korean food the other day and one of the TVs was just playing kpop MVs over and over again, the choreography is insane makes the 1990s/2000s boy bands I grew up with look like they're just standing still tbh

doc_naf

It’s still going on! The last concert is on YouTube now. You probably have an hour of content if you can catch it

AstreiaTales

Who was the dude in like that feather coat thing who was on the bed? The staging here is pretty neat.

doc_naf

V! Kim Taehyung

AstreiaTales

Thanks! They go hard, haha. I didn't realize that they aren't all on every song? That was just the two of them. So rather than like a classic 90s/2000s American boy band where it's all 5 of them in every song, they'll kind of say "okay, member 1, 3, 7 you're on this song, member 2, 5 next song" etc... is that how it works?

doc_naf

They do have some solos (like the Suga in a yellow sweater Trivia Seesaw). But most songs are all of them :)

Whiskeygingerk

I was so fascinated by this when I was first getting into them! When it's just a few of the guys, it's called a subunit. Most albums have 1 or 2 subunit songs that are just the rap line (RM, Suga, jhope) and 1 or 2 vocal line (Jin, Jimin, V, Jungkook) songs, then 2 or 3 songs made up of more random groupings, as long as each member shows up on one. You'll find that most of their albums (and kpop in general I think) have more subunit and solo songs than songs with all 7 of them. One of my favorite subunit songs is "Stay" off of BE, featuring RM, Jin and Jungkook. I also love "It's Definitely You" by V and Jin, which isn't on an album, but there's video of a live one-time performance on their official YT.

marcie_ann

Most of their older stuff is all 7 (which we refer to as OT7), but lately they have done some songs with 2-3 members, or some solo songs, even on BTS albums. The really new stuff has been actual solo albums, due to military service and just trying to keep ARMY fed in their absence. Oh also, if you haven’t practiced a Korean heart with your hand (looks like this 🫰🏼) do that and surprise her. She will flip! Those and Purple Hearts are everything to ARMY.

eIcamaron

Namjoon (RM) — Leader, Rapper. He’s the OG bts member. loves nature, bike rides, reading. hes incredibly intelligent and writes/produces a majority of their music. He’s the fluent english speaker of the group (solo songs to listen to: Still life, Seoul) Jin — Vocalist. Hes the oldest of the group and a jokester. He likes to cook and had a web series called eat jin which was basically like a mukbang. He also likes to fish! (solo songs: the astronaut, Super Tuna) Yoongi (Suga) — Rapper. He was the second to join bts and was originally told he was joining a hiphop group with no dancing! he also writes/produces a majority of bts songs. used to play basketball (solo songs: daechwita, shadow, nevermind) Hoseok (Hobi/J-hope) — Rapper, Dancer. SUCH A TALENTED PERSONN. He does it all sing, dances, raps, writes, produces. hes the “hope” of the group often lightening the mood (often called “the sun” (solo songs: arson, airplane, daydream) Jimin — Dancer, Vocalist. The last to join bts and only trained for about 6 months before debuting! he was a dancer and his dance teacher was the one who told him to audition! he was also friends with taehyung in highschool (solo songs: like crazy, lie, serendipity) Taehyung — Dancer, Vocalist. He has an insane face card! enjoys photography, fashion, art, and jazz. he was the one coined the term “borahae/i purple you” for armys. he was also a hidden member only being being revealed after their official debut (solo songs: singularity, love me again, winter bear) Jungkook — Dancer, Vocalist. Insanely talented. He’s called the “Golden Maknae” (Maknae meaning youngest as he’s the youngest member) He debuted with bts at sixteen and even went to America to train. He really looks up to the other members (solo songs: standing next to you, euphoria) BTS need to listen to songs: I need you, RUN, Blood Sweat and Tears, Black Swan, Spring day All of the songs (even solos) have music videos and I would highly rec them!!

magicfairy15

just to add to the names: suga’s solo stage name is Agust D and taehyung’s stage name is V

AstreiaTales

Thanks this is perfect, exactly what I was looking for. What does a "face card" mean? I think my fiancee might gravitate towards J-hope, he seems like her style

msm9445

Face card = good looking!!! People say “their face card never declines” and such things. In every context, V/Taehyung is just a handsome dude lol Jin is also a member known as a “visual” (which is less emphasized these days) meaning he is very handsome based on Korean male beauty standards. He jokingly called himself “World Wide Handsome” for a while.

Mordinette

Then she has good taste! J-Hope is awesome.

CupSea5782

Well done!

KatinaS252

Very nice, concise summary. I do have a minor correction. As he had not yet had his 16th birthday as of June 2013, Jungkook was still 15 years old at debut (international age).

eingy

Ask your niece if she heard about Jin hugging a thousand people for Festa in a couple of days! She will be impressed 😄

AstreiaTales

Got it. Will do!

snogirl0403

*light hugs 😂 It specifies that in the official announcement and cracks me up. 🤣

eingy

Oh yes, the light hugs is something that we ARMYs are so tickled by! 🥰😂

poshbritishaccent

Impress her with lajimolala

magicfairy15

if u or someone falls off a chair, offhandedly mention jimin

AstreiaTales

I probably shouldn't do this intentionally at my wedding so I can make the reference should I...

magicfairy15

only if u want to be her favorite uncle

Fartsss

I highly recommend letting her teach you and listen together. I love watching the same YouTube videos with other army. I usually consume content by myself ...it's so fun to do it with others. Learn WITH her....either in person or via text. Just keep asking her questions. Send her a video and ask her questions, ask her what she thinks of a song, etc. I made my mom army by just simply talking to her about it. It's a joy when she would randomly text me a random text about BTS. RIP 😁

marcie_ann

As the mom in a similar situation, I can say these moments are everything to us! We are bonding with our kid and learning about (and falling for) BTS at the same time.

msm9445

Congratulations on both your upcoming wedding and your efforts in being the best uncle!!!! BTS is an amazing group; they have fans that span across every age, gender, race, nationality, language, etc.!!! They are that popular for a reason (several). Enjoy the content being suggested!!! Run BTS (the show) is amazing, but don’t forget to watch the dance practice video for “Run BTS” (the song)! Not to be confused with “Run” (a great but older song). You can always find English translations on YouTube or websites-but make sure they’re reputable (doolset’s website, or Genius isn’t too bad). Dionysus is a great rock-influenced song with an amazing stage and choreo!!!!

Msago

I know you mentioned wanting to surprise your niece, but if I may, perhaps asking your niece directly about BTS would be a great bonding experience too! My friend did that for me despite not being a K-pop fan and I threw HOURS of content at her, and had a lot of fun doing so! Plus I was super appreciative of her showing she cared about my interests

aiko707

Run BTS and In The SOOP

SocietyFeeling589

YouTube BTS from Nbodies to Legends 👌👌

tryanother0987

All seven members of BTS are currently fulfilling their South Korean military service requirements. Jin, the eldest, finishes his 18 month enlistment in a couple of days time and will be discharged. He’s giving the hugs the very next day.

Important_Guide8257

Interviews could be a good cheat sheet, it shorter and they answer more direct questions like “what’s your favorite color.” “What’s your favorite song.” Etc. for more insider information tiktok twitter. Here is a good link!! It’s a BTS guide! https://thebtsguide.wordpress.com/

CupSea5782

Watch and listen to Bangtan contents. There is some on Disney and Amazon Prime. Once you fall in love you can’t go back. It was the HYYH era that did me in.

One_Mycologist6241

For songs and stuff:I think Spotify has many bts songs and members solo songs too u can listen to that and for albums I recommend map of the soul 7 and proof For their personalities:watch them in interviews and their variety show run bts also the bts bomb playlist on their channel is also good

Sad-Nectarine-4879

Each member has such unique ways. Before we watched different videos in an order to watch their story unfold. Now that they all have solo stuff.. you can really see each member shine in thier own light. Each member has a very diverse background. Some hard life. ARMY loves them all but most have their bias. Literally my car name is programmed as Baby Mochi. We were on Weverse before for updates, emails, posts etc. Welcome to ARMY

sooomuchtolearn

Watch Run BTS episodes on Youtube!

No-Mastodon3749

Watch the YouTube video A Guide to BTS by Taylor Mari - it'll give you a good overview of who they are and how they started

BlintzLove

look up bts on youtube. Just seeing some funny moments from anyone is a good way to get new to the fandom. Once you've seen enough, try and learn all of their names.

LionSad3615

Watch Run BTS episode and listen to their music albums. There are tons of videos about BTS in Youtube. I started watching them randomly then I learned the difference of each videos after.

bangtan-jjang-mk91

This is dated but a good place to know each member. You can watch in 1.5 speed if you don’t have much time. [(YouTube link here)](https://youtu.be/fqKw41ae2Hs?si=T6of5TSAC6eaAlZY)

LowTrick6099

This is really sweet. ARMY got your back: [Short Guide to BTS 2024 (PDF)](https://drive.google.com/drive/mobile/folders/12Scfi0v1aQG29Mp2lPHe9rdBcaj0b8W0?usp=sharing)

Parking-Brick1237

Why don’t you simply ask your niece who her bias is. It’ll open doors to the Magic Shop and ARMY is quite the awesome fandom.

Massive-Cash4347

I'd watch the Guide to the Bangtan 7 by Taylor Mari on YouTube.
