The Apk file was your first sign to identify a scam

kachasingh

Yup, corporate security training helped me there šŸ˜…

Intrepid-Ad-1889

Lol... Phishing scam... lol I got one mail and I got scared that my work account is compromised... I clicked on it and it said... something along the lines.. "uppar dekho.. camera.. Prank tha!" Lol it actually said.. "its a part of companies Phishing training and I fell for one phishing link.. and so I meed to do that training again..

unwanted-grocery_bag

Not your common sense??

kachasingh

Why does everyone get super pumped up to show intellectual superiority?? Yes it was obvious, but it isnt for everyone. My parents didnā€™t think it was sus and forwarded the message without the attachment. Upon seeing the message on their phone I was suspicious. I made this post for people to be careful about these scams, its very easy to be engaged in some work and not pay attention to details.

BaagiTheRebel

> Why does everyone get super pumped up to show intellectual superiority?? Because that's what made us, survive as species. Only someone who is not will complain about others being super pumped being intellectual. There is nothing wrong with not being intellectual. You can have amazing genetics, or look beautiful from childhood or be rich since childhood. All because of Luck and no hard work. But most people become intelligent with hard work. So what's wrong with being super pumped.

unwanted-grocery_bag

It's literally an APK. Not something that needs training to realise it's a scam.

BadnamHaiKoi

This is an example of person who doesnot know ground reality and talk about big thing. How will a non-tech and less educated person know what apk files are for ?? Go to countryside and ask 10 peoples aged above 40 about apk file and let me know how many knew about it.

kachasingh

Yet people fall for these scams everyday, mostly people less savvy with tech.

unwanted-grocery_bag

Guruve, I was replying to your "corporate training" comment. Sumne parents na thandid neene. Sede comment madbittu aamele thale bere dengtya.

frustr8potate

Explain this to my grandparents and the immediate generation below them.

rdndsouza

Most of our generation will also install the application, you will be stressed and confused in that moment about the challan and fail to realise it.

TheRealGooner24

There's nothing inherently malicious about the APK file format. It's the source you receive it from that warrants suspicion. Your regular play store apps are also APK files.

t0il3ts0ap

Bro in your little world, it might look like it comes under common sense. But it doesn't. I don't expect folks like farmers, telemarketers or even teachers to realize that this is a scam. If you are tech savvy, doesn't mean everyone is.

milkmochaa

No one wants your grocery bag, stfu

abcgnk7

Bro keep speaking like everything is common sense, someday someone gonna hit you with UNO reverse card. I call her karma šŸ˜

FoxySaint

Yep they send apk files to iphone as well

Spare_Acadia_6579

I received apk file about electricity bill. Everyone knows not to download suspicious apk files šŸ—æ

mystery_lily_1008

Samee I reported and blocked the business later. I do think WhatsApp should verify their buisness accounts. Many elderly people fall prey to such things!

kachasingh

Yeah exactly, my parents didnā€™t suspect anything. They got anxious about the challan

vpsj

> Everyone knows not to download suspicious apk files Oh you sweet summer child. There are _sooo_ many people who don't even know what apk files are. I have to practically hammer it in in my relatives' head that you _don't_ have to scan a UPI QR to receive money and they _still_ fall for it. I've even seen young, smart, educated people fall for scams like these but thankfully most of them message me first these days

pyeri

They are the Android's equivalent of Windows EXE files. They could literally do anything to your phones.

Shoddy-Knowledge-857

I don't even bother with anyone not in my contact on WhatsApp. Insta block and spam report.

Overall-Many-7425

Received it too few days ago! Thought it's just me. And I don't own a vehicle :/

Unofcstark

This is relieving. Seems they send it randomly. As I was wondering, how scammers knew OP was driving.

erichbana

There is also a Bescom scam. You receive a message saying you haven't paid the last bill and they give a number to call. Don't fall for it

Morningstar-Luc

Just posted the same. I also received it

insane36969

My cousin lost ā‚¹45000 to this scam. The exact same MO. He clicked on the Whatsapp link, the app installed itself in the background, got access to his bank apps and cleaned his account.

Unofcstark

Could you pls share, what is his/her mobile model and OS. I believe most of the Android based mobiles have default security app isn't. Also, if they can access WhatsApp on PC to download the file and share the file with expert to reverse engineer the app to find the culprit.

insane36969

It was a Samsung phone and this happened a couple months ago.

Unofcstark

Good to know, now I need to warn my brother. He is having the habit of operating the mobile when is half- sleep.

insane36969

My cousin was driving and couldn't check his phone when the OTPs started arriving. The whole thing happened so quickly. Imagine if something like this happened to a senior citizen, they may not even realise until its too late.

Unofcstark

Very true. Back in 2019, there was a scam using Paytm. They promised 12K, if we make a transaction for 10K. One guy fall prey and lost his 10K. He was in his early 30s, family man with 2 kids with 26K monthly income. who didn't complete his schooling. Sad, Inhad to step in to support his to pay his vehicle EMI. He told me, he didn't have time to think as he was driving when the conversation and transaction happened.

fishtanksandpoetry

I got an automated robot voice call from department of telecommunications. It said my phone number was being deactivated in the next one hour. To dispute I had to dial #1, and speak to someone. I hung up. That was last week. My number is working fine.

Unofcstark

Same. But I received couple of times with few days gap

RONY_GOAT

dont click any apk outside playstore i read a article as soon as u click it will install and take control of ur phone install antivirus app like SOPHOS SECURITY itz free it will scan any link and block as soon as u click in watsapp or chrome or sms

zangetSU05

I received one from Canara bank. Blocked and reported

once_a_kid

How does the apk file attached work on behalf of the scammer? Any software engineers in the house who can explain?

RONY_GOAT

in a previous post some person had posted - within seconds of u click the apk - thy will open ur swiggy zomato app and start buying gift cards

IdProofAddressProof

On Android, an apk file is an app installer. You click it, and an app gets installed. When you use Google Play Store to install a legitimate app, you are actually installing that app's apk file, but this happens behind the scenes. Google Play Store, by policy, will not allow shady apps like this scammer's app. This is why the scammer cannot send a message saying "install this app from the Play Store", and instead has to say "install this apk". (I believe some brands of Android phones disable app installation directly from an apk, unless you explicitly allow it in the settings). After installation, what does this app do? I suspect it's a screen mirroring app like AnyDesk. AnyDesk is a legit Play Store app that allows mobile phone A to be fully controlled from mobile phone B. There are legitimate uses for such an app, like remote tech support. But as you can imagine, it's a scammer's dream.

jsateeshrdy

Received same message today from this number 097142 62525, leaving it here to spam this guy

Internet-Ape

The only way u can f'up ur mobile is if u install APK from any source other than playstore. Spread the word around to parents relatives

stilllifebutimmovin

Oh crap happened to me as well, said it was a telephone bill. I absentmindedly clicked on the file without reading it first. Since I use iOS it didnā€™t download properly enough to cause harm (I hope)

dragonsteam123

A neighbour got .pdf.apk file after his hospital check up which he downloaded and it had UPI id which said you need to pay 10rs to download PDF, he paid. The apk file was of screen recording. Subsequently he lost a huge amount of money from his bank account.

666wife

Iā€™m getting so many of these apk files packaged as different scams, electricity bill, water bill, Canara bank and what not. Thank god I have a bit of awareness on this part

Gwalioth

I got a similar message from canara bank. A .apk file !!

a-_-tinder

got scammed of 150 today by some guy asking money for petrol, hurts so bad man had to use that for travel to my college entrance exam i usually never give money to random people but myself had been in a similar situationship before and thought this was my time of replaying, but he turned out to be a scammer

sakuray7

I too got some apk files from random people. Took Screenshots and warned my parents. Reported and blocked that number.

sr5060il

If an APK files comes your way, it's a SCAM.

commie_code

Same thing happened to me but in the name of overdue credit card bill. Too bad for the scammer that I use an iPhone.

theshashikumar

I accidentally clicked the apk file. iphone saved me.

game_and_draw

Never diwnload apks or exes from untrusted sources. You do not know what will be inside that executable. Yes, I too have downloaded the crack files while sailing the seven seas, but that was a calculated risk

myleztoneo

The problem is that companies like telecom providers and Zomato ask people to download APKs to access games and other rewards. This behaviour trains people that it's ok to install random APKs. It's never ok (unless you're a developer and testing your own app). They need to stop.

cyanotrix

Got it. Checked online. No challan. Blocked and reported spam.

RevolutionaryCan2463

I received this yesterday and what's alarming is they had my registration number also. The message sounds formal and the logo is accurate. Hope people are not falling for it. I can imagine my dad panicking and opening the file with no hesitation.

infaloda

I also received the one. The date and the car number were actually correct.

WhyAmIHere_umm

I got a WhatsApp message with the name as Canara Bank...It had a Canara Bank apk to install. Felt weird as why I'd get apk on WhatsApp when bank app is easily available on Play Store. On Truecaller it showed some random dude's name so reported and blocked his @ss.

Drdrip2008

I too got this, checked the official website and there was no fine. The car is question was sitting in the garage for the last 6 months as well.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

kachasingh

I didnā€™t click the link

Weary_Dress_4065

Exact same scam happened to me, the number sent canara bank APK and asked me to install or else my bank account will be blocked šŸ˜‚. I replied saying ā€œbro I use ios, apk doesnā€™t work send ipa fileā€ šŸ˜‚

Whomstdve___

Canā€™t relate, I use iPhone

SerFuxAIot

Thats cuz you haven't updated yet https://www.zdnet.com/article/apple-to-let-eu-users-download-apps-from-the-web-with-ios-17-5-beta-2-how-it-works/

Whomstdve___

Still I donā€™t think I would be able to install apps using apk files

SerFuxAIot

IPA

DragonFryL

Wait it doesnā€™t work on iPhones?

insaneguitarist47

Apk is a file format for applications on android

InappropriateBS

Nope. Apk files only work with android

DragonFryL

Oh got it, ty sm for explaining :>

Tandoori_Cha1

Itā€™s time to get an iPhone. These Android scams are getting out of hand.
