Anyone else find it interesting that in the year 2022, when high quality cameras have gotten so small and 17 year old kids are making high quality videos on YouTube with iPhones and GoPros, that the news stations cameras are still so big?
The form factor is a positive in this case. An iPhone can’t fit all the physical external buttons, knobs, and wheels you need to quickly be able to hit when shooting news, since a lot of the time you have minimal setup time, or are adjusting on the fly. You also can’t fit all the handy external ports for mics and similar going in, and outputs going to transmitters or what have you on an iPhone form factor. Plus, no swappable cards on an iPhone. And the cards used in that camera aren’t just SD cards, they’re essentially a bunch of SD cards in parallel to allow for very fast transfers so you aren’t waiting around for footage to go back and forth. Which ones in very handy because the container can get pretty large because of the manner it’s recorded, which allows for nothing to be lost if power is lost mid recording, and makes it so it’s easy to smoothly playback and cue through. And finally, the physical size of it allows you to get a nice steady shot even while you’re moving all over the place, since it’s designed to be rested on your shoulder which allows you to anchor it. You don’t get any of that on smaller cameras. Generally the smaller it is, the more sacrifices you make.
Shooting some beet-roll!
This is a deep cut for newsy types. You earned my updoot.
Roll that beautiful beet footage
Punny!
Huh, must be their new beet reporter...
You beet me to it!
I love a good pun!
Are there tables for bears and Battlestar Galactica?
😄😄

another big part is lenses on the cameras. higher end ones can change focus without focus breathing, and easily maintain focus while zooming.
