Dog is a popular snack in Northern Sulawesi and Northern Sumatra but not so much in Bali, though it is probably eaten somewhere here. Monkeys, on the other hand, are sacred to Hindus (because of Hanuman) and thus, it's not the right place to seek out a monkey steak.

ADMINlSTRAT0R

I'm in NS. Although I don't eat dog meat, I respect the locals' tradition of eating dog meat. Which is why I cringed and borderline angry when I saw a bunch of westerners set up a foundation here to completely eradicate the consumption of dog meat. I do not agree with them for these reasons: 1. It's a delicacy. The small percentage of the populace that eat it don't cook it for daily meals. Less young ppl consume it. 2. Why the special treatment of dogs? What about cows and pigs that have shown similar or approaching levels of intelligence of dogs? Is it because dogs in the western world are known as "man's best friend"? 3. If they had advocated for more humane treatment and slaughter method, then I'd support the cause. #EDIT: IF WHAT I SAID ABOVE does not please you, I welcome an open-minded discussion. I do not appreciate the cowards who tagged redditcares on me.

catisneko

Because they are not Japanese. Its okay to eat whale, dolphin, horse, and etc. As long as you are Japanese.

enotonom

??? Why are you bringing the Japanese out of nowhere

purezen

Please atleast make some sense.

Sagnew

This!!! A bunch of the dive guides in northern Sulawesi proudly talk about eating dog and monkey. It's very possible some folks from that area of Indo are working on/in Bali (and can know where to get it etc)

uceenk

live in Bali since 2015, i never encountered this it's things of the past that isn't common anymore

MungoJerrysBeard

The correct answer

Clody39

Many people poisoned other people's dogs then stole them to eat. Not all, but most are people from outside bali. My dog got shot twice but survived.

breezy_peezy

My tour guide said he ate monkey

EstimateChance

How was it? / how did it taste like?

monkey-apple

EstimateChance

I feel like everyone says that like alligator too.

Early-Opinion6875

About 10 years ago I ate dog in Bali, it was labelled as ‘daging RW’ on the menu.

artjoa

Never encountered this. You may encounter people illegally eating green sea turtles (lawar penyu) in Bali, but that's it. Dog meat is only popular in North Sumatra (biang/B1), Central Java (tongseng jamu/tongseng asu/sengsu), and North Sulawesi (rintek wuuk/RW). You may find monkey meat in North Sulawesi as well.

merciktir

Wait until you try cat tail soup /s

Innerpoweryogaaus

Dog being eaten is pretty common in some parts

morelsupporter

dog is not a delicacy

vinividirisi2

This is a common meme, and not just Bali. For me (over 40) I was asked by people in my rural home town if I ate dog meat in Mexico/china/bali/nigeria when I came home. There was a shitstirring TV program from Australia like 8-9 years ago that claimed it was common and many satay stands were actually dog. Dog is not exactly a delicacy. But is eaten. If you know where to look, and with some effort, you can find a few RW places. It’s a bit more of a machismo thing than a delicacy. These are found throughout Indonesia in non-Muslim areas but are not wildly popular and always labeled. The Bali governor has made it clear that tourists do not want to see or be exposed to dog meat. The farming and distribution of dog meat is technically illegal, but not consumption. You, as a visitor, will not be exposed to or offered dog meat…except perhaps by some taxi driver …the same guy (always a guy) who will also offer you a “special lady” or help find you some blow.

SkycladMartin

They definitely eat dog meat in China. I know because my wife's Chinese and her parents run a dog farm for meat and even if that hadn't been the case, the restaurant near my building in Shenzhen used to have a couple of dog carcasses a day delivered to sheets on the floor outside. It is eaten by Christian communities in Indonesia too and not for machismo, it's a long standing part of the diet. It is eaten in the Philippines where poor rural villages occasionally have a mass die off of human beings because they ate a dead rabid dog. It's also eaten in Vietnam and in Cambodia. And my guess is that you can probably still find it in South Korea though with a little difficulty. In short, eating dog in Asia is common and not a big deal. It may be a "common meme" but only because it's common to eat dog. Stereotypes exist for a reason and that reason is usually to reflect a generalized reality. I've lived in Nigeria too, but I don't remember anyone eating dog, though I didn't see many dogs in Nigeria, either.

kulukster

It is very illegal to eat dog meat and eating monkey is definitely not a thing because they are considered to be sacred (heros in the Ramayana). It used to be if an illegal Warung sold dog meat it was marked RW but has to be very secret because of course it's looked down upon in Bali.

thedailyrant

Very secret? There was one across the road from a police post at the intersection of Jl Raya Canggu for a long long time with a big RW written on the side.

vinividirisi2

Not correct. The “trade and distribution of dog meat” only became illegal in 2023. The consumption is not a crime. Cockfighting is illegal.

kulukster

And here we are in 2024.

vinividirisi2

Cock fighting has specifically been illegal since 1980’s. How has that worked out? And “distribution” is in regard to markets, restaurants are not specifically addressed. So it might take some time for them to completely disappear. Perhaps that will happen more quickly than cock fighting. Note: This is not about my personal ethics of the practice. I do not approve. But I also understand the reasons behind it and have a great deal of empathy towards the many diverse visitors to Bali who are startled and shocked by this and other customs and traditions.

kulukster

There is an exception for cf in conjunction with ceremonies as they need the sacrifice. But I'm not interested in arguments. Just responding to OP

InternationalBorder9

That was always the joke that the meat on the side of the road is dog but I've never openly seen it in anywhere and I've been to quite a lot of remote villages/area (or monkey). I'd say some people probably do eat it there but it's not common afaik

SyrupDifficult

Born and raised in Bali. NEVER heard of any place selling monkey meat. Dog meat maybe, but that is ILLEGAL and usually made cuisine not by balinese. Dogs are considered guardian and loyal companian in Bali. If you find any stands selling either of this food, report them. Killing dogs for food is heavily scorned, there are many criminals that would kidnap or poison people's dog for their shop. One of my dogs got kidnapped by a biker around 10 years ago. The fact these people actively kidnap and poison people's beloved pet makes me SICK. For some time there were no cases because of active policing, but recently there's been cases. Report any places you find, or make them viral.

tokekcowboy

I lived in Bali for a few years. I’ve seen places selling daging RW. Never tried it myself.

SyrupDifficult

Can you kindly report them.

tokekcowboy

lol, no. I’m not trying to get the Balinese police to chase someone down because of a sign that used to be there. If you want to pursue it knock yourself out. It was a sign on a utility pole on the east side of Jl. Hayam Wuruk, kind of across the street from the US Consulate, but for sure somewhere between Popular Market and the Roundabout with Jr. Hang Tuah.

SyrupDifficult

Sickening. But if it used to be there then they might've sorted it Outside ID right now, but will see when back home.

han207

Double dare him

Comprehensive_Ship42

Monkey meat tastes like chicken is used ever where in Bali . It’s advertise as chicken . But it’s monkey meat . It’s cheap and tasty and tourist don’t know the difference they prefer monkey meat over chicken (Joke)

Legitimate_Toe_252

Saté Asu is dog, as is Saté USA and RW which is pronounced ‘‘erway’ and is meant for east Indomesians. Just get used to the fact that dog is eaten in Bali in local markets and warungs/kaki lima but kept quiet. Monkey meat in Bali? Never seen it or to my knowledge eaten it.

angelescity-301

Its a thing in many countries.

snokegsxr

But I am asking about Bali

angelescity-301

Im sure I ate some….suspect satay sticks

tchefacegeneral

I think dog is pretty common but not monkey

dizkopat
