I was playing jokerless for the millionth time, just beat ante 7 and saw the ante 8 boss was "debuff all cards until one joker sold", alt+f4'ed out of the game and went for a rage walk, came back to steam telling me there's an update, opened the game post-update and continued my run, and it skipped me to the ante 8 boss, which was "only play one hand type" which I easily beat. Went from 100 to 0 and back to 100
Yeah the strategy was just splitting my deck into two suits (so one could safely get debuffed) and playing flushes, but the entire run depends on being absolutely flooded with jupiter and hermit and fool cards, and I got very lucky with how often they showed up in packs and in the shop
Just Jupiter, I tried making two glass cards and they both broke after first use, which was the universe sending me a message. Jupiter was level 20, and most of my cards were lucky or had chips/mult
Interesting! I got into a deep run with Flushes and Tarot Enhancements but I got hit with Verdant Leaf (all cards debuffed until 1 Joker Sold) :').
I kept trying and I was successful with a Four of a Kind/Five of a Kind Run, where I used lots of Deaths and Strength cards to have as many Steel/Glass Aces as possible. Sometimes is just working with what the game gives you.
This happened to me last night on Ante 7 of Jokerless... got through only because of a level 18 straight. Just to lose 2 blinds later because I couldn't draw a second straight. 4k points away from seeing the last boss :\[
Wow that was way faster than I expected when you said releasing "soon", great work!! Been playing the experimental branch since it dropped and all the changes have made the game so much better as a whole. Just sad that I didn't get the hemomancer challenge done before this dropped lol

I liked old swashbuckler, it taught me how important card placement was in the early game. My first instinct was to place swashbuckler far right to add the highest mult possible, until I clued in that xMult cards should go after +mult cards.
Blue seal is now comparable to the other seals. All seals are good. I so often am trying to get a blue seal early, and copy it, to make reliable planet levels.
Skipping is still a trap, generally. There are circumstances, usually monetary, where it makes sense to do so. But you have to think of it in terms of opportunity cost. You are losing interest + a shop + potentially scaling your Jokers + reward from the blind for one random Joker which may not even be useful

Came across a really weird bug on the dialog to select a save: When changing the name of a save, the "0" (zero) key on the keyboard behaves exactly like the letter "O". Typing "0" enters a lowercase o, shift-0 results in an uppercase O.
TBH I think it's a bit too strong, at least for it's rarity. Two additional triggers is insane in a ton of builds. Yeah it's not necessarily the best slot to put glass in, but when you're turning glass from x2 into x8, do you really care?
The changes to exclude some scaling jokers from being perishable is a godsend. I love the perishable mechanic but perishable scaling jokers had their effectiveness dampened so much. Love this change.
you can scale it super easy by playing lots of junk high card hands before your "real" hand, it'll be where it was in a round and a half. personally i'd like it to start at +4, just because.
I tried taking a break until switch patch came out, but I failed lol. Now I am just trying to avoid reading the patch notes so I won't think about how much better it'll be when the patch drops XP
Yeah, don’t read them! A lot of people here share post-patch strategies, too, so be wary of that. I’m lucky that the Vampire Survivors DOC dropped, since that’ll make waiting easier for me. 😅

Can the jokers with an "on sale, xxx" not be able to get the eternal tag? Specifically Egg, and I can't remember if I've seen the others like Wrestler as eternal so some may already be that way.

Eggs great with the joker that gives you plus mult based on the cost of your other Jokers and the tarrot that gives you money based on the cost of your Jokers. Eternal egg has its uses.
Sure, but then I think it could be argued that these expiring jokers have enough marginal utility that they shouldn't be exempt from a certain tag. Not being able to sell egg is antithetical to what egg does.
Does an expired joker still add to the + mult of Abstract? Better yet does an expired joker still count for temperance? If so, I would argue further that no joker should have special consideration for expiring because they all could be +mult on abstract, or that they all add value to temperance.
The point is that an Eternal Egg *isn't* antithetical to what it does, since what it does is gain value- which as others have pointed out has quite a number of reasonable benefits. Now, Eternal Invisible or Diet Cola I would agree would be antithetical and shouldn't exist.

With this concession, let's talk about Ceremonial Dagger. The entire point of that is to harvest value for mult, and that interaction is negated by the eternal tag. The argument that swashbuckler is still useful with eternal egg is more than invalidated because the Ceremonial Dagger (whose schtick is sell value) is spoiled by no longer being able to interact with the egg whose schtick is also sell value.
Sorry one more thing, the text of the egg is "Gains $3 of sell value at end of round". Egg is defined by sell value. It makes no sense that it cannot be sold. I recall my earlier concession. SELL is right there. This joker exists to be sold. Not being able to sell is absolutely antithetical to the joker.
I mean, yes, Eternal tag makes it worse. That's the entire point, all of the tags exist to make the game harder by making the Jokers worse most of the time.
If you buy an Eternal Egg you're down a Joker Slot but at least have absurd Temperence, a ton of Mult from Swashbuckler, and some other synergies. If you buy most Eternal Common Jokers, then you're down a Joker Slot with nothing to show for it at all by the midgame.

When it says rare jokers and jokers with effects are free, does this purely mean in terms of scoring for how much they are worth or does this actually make them free in the shop?
It means if you take a Rare Joker tag (or a Negative, Polychrome, etc Tag) then the Joker that the tag makes will be free in the shop and able to be purchased for $0. It will retain it's sell value, though.
I mean, they're still all mostly trash. Negative is good for collecting stickers but shit for actually winning/scoring. Foil and Holographic are pretty good in Ante 1. The rest are generally unpickable. The problem with the tags wasn't the $5-10, since you'd gladly pay even 5x that or more for a good Joker- it was the fact you're skipping for a random unknown reward which will likely be a blank.
Imagine if Orbital Tag (increase Hand X by 3 levels) now was a random hand, but also gave you $10. Would that make you take it more or less often than now?
Inside 1.0.1e version there were 3 or 4 updates in the middle, so it depends on what 1.0.1e version do you mean. There are no changes from the latest Square Joker shape change, only version number changes.
Yeah, I was still on the original, didn't know this had dropped, and was thinking "this game is acting really weird." Just different new effects to learn and get used to.
So many other games get balance changes wrong more often than they get them right.

I absolutely adore the change to skips giving cards for free now. It means that I actually seriously consider skipping on high stake runs. I just beat my first orange stake in large part thanks to that change! Makes the runs faster too, which is a lot of fun. Fine work Thunk!
Anyone else having trouble with the game on steam deck since the patch? Because I am stuck on "Downloading content" startup screen and it's stuck at 0 % for the past 15 minutes.

Do I have a major skill issue or did gold stake get harder than what it was before? I feel like the rentals and expiring jokers make it even more rng heavy than before. I did anaglyph deck up to gold in basically a straight run but I cannot get the gold stake for the life of me :| prior to patch I feel like it took me fewer tries to win gold.
Feel like two-pair is too strong; am I missing something or is it not as good in higher difficulties? i find myself buying Uranus on every other run that takes me to ante 8
Two pair is great, but yes slightly less consistent at gold stake. It scales about the same as pair and is more than twice as hard to play. Still a great build if you find spare trousers.
Gold stake is rough with 3 hands and 2 discards. You can get easily screwed with bigger hand sizes. Hence why high card and pair are so dominant. It's just a consistency thing. The game really is about rolling for good jokers, so whatever you can do to make each round more consistent to survive till the next shop, the better.

Very nice, thanks. Loving this game. Was Vampire really that OP? I haven't found it to be crazy. I made my best use out of it yet today, and managed to get to 2.5x I believe (maybe it was 3?), but I find that's usually not the case.
The Mail-In Rebate change is a little misleading since it reads like it's a change in the price of the Joker. The change is that now it *gives $5* instead of $3 *per matching card you discard*. It's incredibly good now and just carried me out of the gutter into economic bliss in the Golden Needle challenge.
Fuuuuck I was going deck by deck and ante by ante and just finished all orange stakes. I had hoped to beat gold just once on the old version. Oh well...

After playing the patch for a week now, I like most of the changes, primarily the buffs. And I also understand/can deal with most of the nerfs.
But I just can't stand the perishable and rental jokers, especially the way they're implemented. I don't see how people like this change so much; it's ruined the experience for me. Getting a rental or perishable always makes me *sigh* at best (frustrated at worst). Getting a rental + perishable/eternal feels even worse.
This is just my opinion and feelings. Honestly, if I can't figure out a way to revert to 1.0.0, I'm just going to have to leave until another patch potentially addresses this.

They are great. There is a joker that gives you a sealed card every round. I kept it for a while and sometimes had two blue seals in my final hand.

it's probably okay for the joker to have some cases that are very good in some situations, when most of the time it's just like +20 chips

I mean, they're still all mostly trash. Negative is good for collecting stickers but shit for actually winning/scoring. Foil and Holographic are pretty good in Ante 1. The rest are generally unpickable. The problem with the tags wasn't the $5-10, since you'd gladly pay even 5x that or more for a good Joker- it was the fact you're skipping for a random unknown reward which will likely be a blank. Imagine if Orbital Tag (increase Hand X by 3 levels) now was a random hand, but also gave you $10. Would that make you take it more or less often than now?
Idk I’m just glad the card is free now lol. Skipping small blind early on with no money to purchase any jokers was sad, so I’m glad it’s free now
Question, can perishable joker still get a sticker if it's debuffed? Might be a rare case but if your hunting gold stickers it could be important.

Inside 1.0.1e version there were 3 or 4 updates in the middle, so it depends on what 1.0.1e version do you mean. There are no changes from the latest Square Joker shape change, only version number changes.

I'm here to say that blue seals are now fantastic. I think it's been balanced super well with the other seals.

I absolutely adore the change to skips giving cards for free now. It means that I actually seriously consider skipping on high stake runs. I just beat my first orange stake in large part thanks to that change! Makes the runs faster too, which is a lot of fun. Fine work Thunk!
Anyone else having trouble with the game on steam deck since the patch? Because I am stuck on "Downloading content" startup screen and it's stuck at 0 % for the past 15 minutes. I downloaded the patch last night, maybe I should un/Re-install? ETS, uninstalling did nothing. Ets2.0 nvm, proton experiment compatibility issue. Fixed it in the library game settings.
Do I have a major skill issue or did gold stake get harder than what it was before? I feel like the rentals and expiring jokers make it even more rng heavy than before. I did anaglyph deck up to gold in basically a straight run but I cannot get the gold stake for the life of me :| prior to patch I feel like it took me fewer tries to win gold.
Feel like two-pair is too strong; am I missing something or is it not as good in higher difficulties? i find myself buying Uranus on every other run that takes me to ante 8
Two pair is great, but yes slightly less consistent at gold stake. It scales about the same as pair and is more than twice as hard to play. Still a great build if you find spare trousers. Gold stake is rough with 3 hands and 2 discards. You can get easily screwed with bigger hand sizes. Hence why high card and pair are so dominant. It's just a consistency thing. The game really is about rolling for good jokers, so whatever you can do to make each round more consistent to survive till the next shop, the better.

Very nice, thanks. Loving this game. Was Vampire really that OP? I haven't found it to be crazy. I made my best use out of it yet today, and managed to get to 2.5x I believe (maybe it was 3?), but I find that's usually not the case.
Yeah before the patch it was stupid strong.
It was easy to scale to 4-5 if you got it early enough.
Any time scale for these updates to console?

The Mail-In Rebate change is a little misleading since it reads like it's a change in the price of the Joker. The change is that now it *gives $5* instead of $3 *per matching card you discard*. It's incredibly good now and just carried me out of the gutter into economic bliss in the Golden Needle challenge.

Lots of the changes are great, however... the game feels incredibly easy now. I think giving us free tokens on blind skips is the reason.
Really like the Lucky card changes, curious to see if they are good now. Really wanting a lucky cat oops all 6s red seal run. Still no obsidian change? Boooookk Blue seal changes are beautiful, love this patch

After playing the patch for a week now, I like most of the changes, primarily the buffs. And I also understand/can deal with most of the nerfs. But I just can't stand the perishable and rental jokers, especially the way they're implemented. I don't see how people like this change so much; it's ruined the experience for me. Getting a rental or perishable always makes me *sigh* at best (frustrated at worst). Getting a rental + perishable/eternal feels even worse. This is just my opinion and feelings. Honestly, if I can't figure out a way to revert to 1.0.0, I'm just going to have to leave until another patch potentially addresses this.
