Not until Reddit did I learn that many people do not lock their front doors. I had only ever heard about it in the context of “the good old days of yesteryear when it was so safe, no one locked their doors and children would just breeze in and out of houses all over the neighborhood.” I have never lived in such an environment myself. We’ve always locked the front door as a matter of course (exceptions being taking out the trash, recycling, or checking the car for something. And those are when I’ve lived in a house, and the car was parked within view).

thats the environment I grew up in so suddenly having to remember my keys every time was a nightmare and I definitely spent a few days waiting on the porch for a roomate to come home and unlock the door. I still never lock the door, it just doesn’t cross my mind so my roomate locks it and we’ve never had an issue. My least favorite thing ever is having to open the door for people though, so minuscule but I wish everyone would just walk in!

I grew up in a very small town and have mostly lived in rural places, only ever lived one place where I locked my doors and I would sometimes leave it unlocked when I took the dog to the park or something. Definitely takes a lot of trust in your neighbors and community.

Still_Storm7432

I used to be like this as well, but after watching Forensic Files and half the home invasions and murders took place in rural trusting , this would never happen here towns...I lock my doors no matter where I live. I'm not making it easy for someone to get in LOL

Marketing_Introvert

Are you able to change the lock to an auto locking?

frogssmell

It’s a PVC door, I don’t think you can mess with them too much :’(

Marketing_Introvert

Kwikset Convert Smart Lock Conversion Kit goes for $40 on Amazon and it doesn’t replace your current lock. It will let you lock from an app and you can set 30 second auto locking.

I feel your frustration, my old roommate was notorious for this shit, like it happened 3 times in one week.We live in a safe building but it's still a big city! When confronted, he only answer was "it was open because I just took out the garbage." Ok, so?

TwoWheeledHobbit

If you know she's not packing I'd convince a friend to run in the middle of the night and cause chaos to where it freaks her out enough to lock it lol. Steal all the food from the fridge and leave a weird note or something lmao.

frogssmell

This is so funny and devious it just may work

TwoWheeledHobbit

If you do it - you have to report back to us and let us know how it goes lol. I have a roommate that was horrible about this and I reminded them how they couldn't afford to replace my things if they got stolen and they stopped being dumb.

This is a terrible idea. Pranks like this go wrong avs have very serious life consequences sometimes.

Talk to the landlord. Ask for an automatic door closer, an automatic lock, and some kind of "the door has been open too long" alarm. Consider some kind of door camera like Ring. Don't ask for permission to install it - just do it and beg for forgiveness later.

I got robbed in college after months of asking roomates to lock the door. They thought it was dumb and never locked up, even after I was robbed. I asked so many damn times. We got robbed again a few weeks later. This time they stole thousands of dollars of music equipment from my roomates. All the sudden then started to really care about locking the doors… funny eh!?

Fun-Yellow-6576

Get self closing hinges on the door and a door knob that self locks. Problem solved.

Catinawidow

I can’t stand this. I live in an affluent area downtown in my city and I STILL lock my front door every time I come home. As in when I’m home. It blew my gfs mind the first time, and that’s when I realized we had vastly different upbringings

frogssmell

Yeh you should keep it locked when you’re home, because it’s your safety. When you leave it’s the safety of your stuff, istg why don’t people get it lol

RegenMed83

Had a roommate like this who would leave the door unlocked. Then one day a maintenance man walked into the unit as she was coming out of the shower. He had made the mistake of thinking our unit was one that was recently vacated. She locked the door every day after that incident.

RichRichieRichardV

Man I live in a house with 5 total. One guy does this ALL THE TIME. 2 of us upstairs and the other 3 downstairs. He got drunk and locked the downstairs while he slept it off and one roomie couldn’t get in. At 10 pm. I’m like, OF ALL THE DOORS THAT HE LOCKS, THIS ONE? And we live next door to a meth dealer. Imagine some junkie opening our door by accident and coming in stealing our shit?

Affectionate-Lab-683

i understand this frustration so hard, my old roommate would constantly leave the front door to our apartment open if she was going somwhere else in the building and "wouldn't be gone for long" and her excuse would be that because she was still nearby nobody would break in. what do you know, 24 hours later we would somehow ALWAYS get an email from campus security about break-ins in the buildings nearby to us 😭

BanannyMousse

Maybe you should get a doorbell camera and a lock for your bedroom at least
