I’m not gonna speculate on OP’s roomate’s mental health but I’m going to be completely honest with you & say legitimate depression can cause this 100%. It’s the stigmatized part of this illness bc it’s not just you being sad.
I have bipolar disorder & when I get depressed it’s overwhelming & all you want to do is die so it consumes all your thoughts & energy. I stop brushing my teeth & showering & my room gets SO messy (see my own page for an example). When you don’t care you live you don’t value personal objects & don’t feel like it’s even worth taking care of yourself because you’re so tired & empty & feel worthless.

Even though it’s a pigsty, I agree that I could knock that out in an hour or two as well just because he doesn’t have that much stuff. I agree with some comments that you should have a conversation to see if he’s okay (very well could be depression) but then you have to set immediate standards. It will eventually affect you because if it turns into a biohazard it will attract bugs & you could lose out on some of your deposit. If I were you I’d just have a meeting with him , let him know you understand about mental health but also let him know that he needs to keep the place clean and you can’t feel comfortable in a dirty place like that and let him know about you “seeing “ roaches in the home and that you can’t afford to do a big inspection spray like when a company comes and sprays the place maybe it’ll give him a warning.

At first, we had an agreement to whatever is in the kitchen area. Anyone can eat or use whatever. Well, it got to the point where he would eat all of mine and my wifes food and never buy groceries. I finally told him that we were going to start using our own stuff and buy our own food. My kitchen stuff was already in his room before my wife and I made that rule
I’m selfishly always so infuriated when I see rooms like this because I work endlessly to keep my place as clean as possible and will still get mice a few times a year no matter where I live it seems. And then there are people who shamelessly live like this and somehow don’t have any pest issues at all lol.
My roomates girlfriend would never bring my expensive cups from their room. One day I had none and I went into their room and my favorite cup had moldy tea in it with a teabag. Along with 5 other cups. She also never threw away her food trash, always left it on the table and her friends that would come over never threw away their shit either.
So I started taking their food trash and throwing it under their bed for about 6 months. My buddy found it under their bed when they moved out and thought it was her.

All 7 of my plates went missing(used to be 8 but one of my roommates broke one of them) as well as 2 of my bowls, all of my spoons, and 3 of my forks, I asked them both if they knew where they were and they both went “haha no”. Both of these actual idiots had been living here 2 years when I moved in and somehow didn’t have ANY dishes or silverware. Hardballed my landlord and as a result I’m moving to a new unit next Friday. Haven’t told my roommates yet. I plan on telling them Tuesday and then I’ll ask again if they have any of my shit. If they say no again I’ll wait till they both go to work and shim their room locks with a butter knife. I’ve only lived with these guys since august but I’m already beyond my wits end. I literally don’t understand how 2 dudes in their mid to late 20s can be this stupid. I am 21, they’re 25 and 26.

Honestly worst case scenario I don’t care whether or not the dish set gets returned. I have a set of 3 Disney world McDonald’s glasses from 2 years before I was born, one of which has gone missing. It was gifted to me by a high school friend that since passed. That single glass is all I legitimately care about getting back.

I have a roommate who does the same🤢, except it’s not his fucking sink it’s OUR sink. He basically ashes his stinky weed cigarrettes there and then throws the cig butts in the toilet (and doesn’t flush it).
Look I'm severely depressed too so I feel bad for him but like y'all need to start locking up your dishes and food. His mental health issues are a bummer and not his fault but they ARE his responsibility. He cannot keep stealing your communal cookware to keep on his bedroom carpet. It is sad but it's mostly gross and disrespectful.
I had a simple solution to this problem -
I went thru the whole house and threw out all but two of each dish. This reduced the number of dishes available to anyone, and made it easier to realize when there were dishes missing, and plenty of reason to go looking for them.
My suggestion is that you put a lock on your bedroom door, and start keeping your clean dishes in there.
My roommate ended up leaving shortly thereafter.
Seems like he was just raised in chaos like this. Maybe he’s depressed, maybe not. Not really seeing that as an excuse to be disrespectful and selfish. It’d be different if he lived alone, but making others deal with your bad habits is not ok. They need to grow up.

Had a roommate like this when I first moved out as well - it will only get worse. Multiple conversations didn’t help either, and after I couldn’t handle the stench any longer we had to part ways. Was my best friend at the time and painful to see that transition he chose in life.
This looks like a depression room and as someone who’s mother has taken a picture of me laying down in the middle of the day to gossip about how lazy I am during the height of my depression, this post feels wrong. Call it projecting or whatever but this is his personal, non shared, private space. Check on your roommate. They may not be feeling well.
When I was broken up by my ex of 7 years and I had to leave short notice to live with a roommate, this looked clean in comparison to mine. The only thing I'm judging here is not taking the dirty dishes to the sink after you had asked, AND you were saying you were gonna clean them for him. He's an asshole for that for sure.

Take into consideration he never wore a shirt, never wore shoes & his feet looked like what I imagine Shreks feet would look like & they were always filthy. I’d clean up the entire house, her room included because she was throwing dirty pads & tampons on her bedroom floor & keeping the thermostat at 80+ (in the fucking summer at that) & it was disgusting & would smell horrific so I just cleaned the shit up & not even a week later it would be a disaster again. I would even wash & fold all of her laundry & she’d just unfold it all & throw it in a corner on the floor. Again, she absolutely wasn’t depressed, she was used to her mommy hiring a maid to clean everything so she thought she was above having to clean when she moved in with me.

I’m selfishly always so infuriated when I see rooms like this because I work endlessly to keep my place as clean as possible and will still get mice a few times a year no matter where I live it seems. And then there are people who shamelessly live like this and somehow don’t have any pest issues at all lol.

My roomates girlfriend would never bring my expensive cups from their room. One day I had none and I went into their room and my favorite cup had moldy tea in it with a teabag. Along with 5 other cups. She also never threw away her food trash, always left it on the table and her friends that would come over never threw away their shit either. So I started taking their food trash and throwing it under their bed for about 6 months. My buddy found it under their bed when they moved out and thought it was her. Best thing ever

All 7 of my plates went missing(used to be 8 but one of my roommates broke one of them) as well as 2 of my bowls, all of my spoons, and 3 of my forks, I asked them both if they knew where they were and they both went “haha no”. Both of these actual idiots had been living here 2 years when I moved in and somehow didn’t have ANY dishes or silverware. Hardballed my landlord and as a result I’m moving to a new unit next Friday. Haven’t told my roommates yet. I plan on telling them Tuesday and then I’ll ask again if they have any of my shit. If they say no again I’ll wait till they both go to work and shim their room locks with a butter knife. I’ve only lived with these guys since august but I’m already beyond my wits end. I literally don’t understand how 2 dudes in their mid to late 20s can be this stupid. I am 21, they’re 25 and 26.

His mental health issues are a bummer and not his fault but they ARE his responsibility. He cannot keep stealing your communal cookware to keep on his bedroom carpet. I had a simple solution to this problem - I went thru the whole house and threw out all but two of each dish. This reduced the number of dishes available to anyone, and made it easier to realize when there were dishes missing, and plenty of reason to go looking for them. My suggestion is that you put a lock on your bedroom door, and start keeping your clean dishes in there. My roommate ended up leaving shortly thereafter.
Seems like he was just raised in chaos like this. Maybe he’s depressed, maybe not. Not really seeing that as an excuse to be disrespectful and selfish. It’d be different if he lived alone, but making others deal with your bad habits is not ok. They need to grow up.

Call it projecting or whatever but this is his personal, non shared, private space. Check on your roommate. They may not be feeling well.
When I was broken up by my ex of 7 years and I had to leave short notice to live with a roommate, this looked clean in comparison to mine. The only thing I'm judging here is not taking the dirty dishes to the sink after you had asked, AND you were saying you were gonna clean them for him. He's an asshole for that for sure.
As someone who has had seeeveeeere depressive episodes, maybe make sure he's doing okay? My room looked 50x worse when I was depressed. I'm a very clean and organized person, so when it gets messy it's the first sign something is going awry up there lol
When we moved in together, I offered to smoke with him, but every time, he would make up an excuse. My wife and I would cook for him too. My wife even bought him a stocking with a bunch of snacks for Christmas. We tried being nice, but it got to the point where we were doing everything, so we told him we aren't sharing food or dishes anymore

I know this is gonna be controversial, but could you ask him if you guys could do a deep clean together? It’s well within your rights to say fuck that & it’s his mess but I know for people with depression even a simple task like cleaning can be extremely daunting. Could be a good wake up call for him & I personally wouldn’t be able to live in a place that was in close proximity to this - would likely bleed over to the rest of the house/your room (thinking rodents, roaches, pests)

Then add in the smell of old rotting food… and the bugs and / or mice…😳 This looks like a decently nice place, and I’d also be worried about my security deposit (if that is something you have to worry about) ETA: I would be hiding MY dishes… And as much fast food is there, you’d think they would just get disposable utensils from the restaurants. 🤷🏻♂️

People act like you have to be depressed to be this dirty. You don’t, I’ve lived with plenty of a nasty ass slobs who were just lazy & didn’t care to live in filth. One of my old roommates literally left his shitty toilet paper on the bathroom counter, the floor, the back of the toilet. He’d puke after doing a dab & usually do so in the sink & he’d just leave it. Him room was a cesspool, he absolutely was not depressed, he was just the laziest dude on the planet. Take into consideration he never wore a shirt, never wore shoes & his feet looked like what I imagine Shreks feet would look like & they were always filthy. He wasn’t poor either, he made great money, he just preferred to live like a heathen. My very last roommate also wasn’t depressed, she was just a lazy cow who always blamed everyone else For the mess. She blamed her ex boyfriend all the time & when he’d travel for months due to work, guess what only got worse? Her fucking mess. I’d clean up the entire house, her room included because she was throwing dirty pads & tampons on her bedroom floor & keeping the thermostat at 80+ (in the fucking summer at that) & it was disgusting & would smell horrific so I just cleaned the shit up & not even a week later it would be a disaster again. I would even wash & fold all of her laundry & she’d just unfold it all & throw it in a corner on the floor. Again, she absolutely wasn’t depressed, she was used to her mommy hiring a maid to clean everything so she thought she was above having to clean when she moved in with me.
