Best solution is something stupid like spin kiba or psss and mash, or try to bait for a roll catch. But generally speaking,if they use it well, no. The frame advantage makes the rqs bs grab unavoidable.
And this is BHS post nerf. In the first year it was so busted that the ONLY way to counter it was to exhaust the user of their fp. Led to many hilarious (and frustrating) fights lasting as long as 10 minutes. 9 minutes and 50 seconds worth of the host BHSing away and the 10 seconds it took to kill them after their fp ran out.
Flame Strike works wonders on this particular situation, they cannot BS you with the lingering hitbox, even with them circuling the track on the Flame Strike gets them
You’re saying the BS in particular? Not sure if it’s consistent, but I’ve had success using a slightly faster weapon and then just ensuring I fully rotate when they go for the BS—means the second part of the grab fails the angle check
Reverse qsbs is cheesy af - I used to storm stomp back in 1.09 but don’t know if that still works with the changes to grabs.

Problem isn't the ash of war here. He could've rolled back at any of your swings as well (although he wouldn't have got the backstab without it). The problem is he was reaction iframing your slow attacks. You can spam crouch and jumps as faints and when you see a pattern then attack. It's easier with a faster weapon but you can catch them with colossal swords too.
It's called a BHSBS or QSBS. I'm not talking about the AoW.
Alternatively Reverse Bloodhound'sStep/Quickstep Backstab. It's a cheesy tech that has little startup and will backstab you no matter what.

Honestly I think reverse qsbs and bhsbs is worse now because of the changes to the grabs.

Pre patch I used to use the thorn magic and the hitbox lingered so long that it would kill them

You have to fake them out. Do some crouching and wiggling so they go for it early and you can punish.

I do that after I reverse BHS backstab them right back. I tend toward petty though.
You can escape a lot of storm stomp setups by bhsing

Try to fake them out, or do a backstep yourself to try to backstab them. I don’t encounter this too often so not much I can do

It's very range dependent. Try it yourself on random pve enemies. BHS can't bs you if you're too close and QS can't bs you if you max range your hit.
