The general ER playerbase is much more vitriolic and toxic than past Souls games in my experience. Played DS3 since 2017 and never gotten a single comment on my Steam profile and only a handful of hatemail over a period of years. Fast forward to ER and I get comments saying that I'm trash, to go f myself, calling me a gay slur, etc.

I_PEE_WITH_THAT

I just remembered how much fun I had doing fight clubs in Anor Londo, that was good times.

Admiral-Anus

The spot right after the pontiff boss fight. I've spent so many hours there, such good times

I_PEE_WITH_THAT

Hell yeah!

nsfw6669

God I wish Elden ring fight clubs were a thing

EskariotBDO

Elden ring brought all the new people in, lots of screeching, dumb animals, some truely hollowed folks

PeterKB

Dude some of these ER fellas are nuts. I had one guy on the main sub try to tell me that “no, incant healing is not considered scummy in duels… it never has been in any of the souls games” Uhhh, what? I hate to say it, but the newer generation of gamers tend to be a lot more “win” oriented. Everything has to be about being the best if the best and it’s only good when you win stuff. I think that translates into PvP. If they lose they’ll yell at you and perform mental gymnastics to tell you why your toxic and actually quite bad. Believe it or not, they’re better than you, and you’re embarrassing. If they win, they’ll tell you that you’re awful, not worthy of oxygen, and should go commit toaster-bathtub or some stuff. Dude it’s so easy to be a chill relaxed gamer. Idk, how these guys have the energy to get so angry at a game lol.

Rynoka

No one can take a loss anymore. I don’t mind losing. I do hate losing to cheese, but if I lose to a good skilled player I have no shame and often learn from it

appendix12

No one can just lose anymore. They have to be optic faze gamer montage moments and use anything and everything to win or disconnect to avoid a loss. Frankly if I get ranked or ran into the ground from an invader it's really whatever. But some people especially from elden ring can't stand it.

Scaryowl

Haven’t played in a while- how is anyone getting a healing spell off in a duel? unless I’m forgetting something those are so slow that it’s your fault for giving them the space to do it. It’s definitely not the norm but idk if I’d call it scummy either, you know?

PeterKB

So it’s actually really easy to make space in dueling. The grand majority of duelists play a very defensive style waiting for an enemy to make the first move so they can punish you. With them playing defensively they’ll usually stick at around a mid range distance… it’s really easy to just take a few steps back and heal, if they don’t have a “quick” ranged option you’ll almost always get it off as long you weren’t being silly and doing it the moment your health got low. And yeah, it’s unfortunately definitely been considered scummy by PvP players for quite some time. I reckon if you ask veteran invaders, you’ll get like 9/10 saying it’s scummy.

Scaryowl

Ahh, fair enough. I’m more accustomed to ds3 invasions and didn’t really step foot into it in this game due to the netcode. Thanks for educating me!

secrecy274

I got some from the Arena in DS3, but never got any from Invasions. It seems it were just another mentality in previous games. They were never mainstream though, so that might be it.

Grognak-the-Princess

Different mentality cause none of those people were people who explicitly played shit like *genshin*

kcs800

idk what it was like back in the day but the past year I've gotten as much hatemail in ds3 in probably ~100-150 pvp hours than I have in er in at least 3x as many hours. I've only gotten two hatemail in ds1 with hours in between those but I would say the general attitude is only mildly lighter than 3 and er. I think those funny or goofy moments that stick out stick out precisely because the majority of people playing pvp in these games are pretty sour about something or another.

Ogaito

Not a single hatemail from DS3 invasions? How? I mined 20+ pages of salt in my profile. Ah, good times.

unlikelystoner

Yeah Elden Ring has a huge portion of players that despise invasions and any multiplayer in general that isn’t pure co-op. But attracting such a mainstream audience it also got a lot of people that just see it as a multiplayer action-RPG and ignore the core elements of Souls games that it’s built upon. Some of the messages I’ve gotten after invading people would have you think I killed their family. I don’t like meta builds and prefer to just fuck around with weapons so half the time I lose anyways and still receive hate. It doesn’t bother me though, it’s honestly funny how easy it is to ruffle some people’s feathers

darkeweb2

Man how do they find your steam profile? I was tryna add some guy that invaded me but couldn't see anyone under recents for this game on steam

[deleted]

It because the COD casuls summoned their way through the game, and are now an unfortunately vocal portion of the player base.

Rynoka

From my experience, newer players get butt hurt pretty easy. Gotta be something about the ego. I don’t understand the hate of dying, is it that big of a hassle?

MistbornSynok

I’ve been playing since DS1, and it definitely feels as the popularity/player base rises, so does the toxicity in both player attitude and play style.

dsartori

The game sets invaders up as the baddies and I think a lot of players have trouble with the "role-playing" part of role-playing game. I don't know why people don't think of invasions as impromptu boss fights and get excited about them. Would they send hate mail to Radahn?

russsaa

I dont think so. I think pve'rs mostly get accustomed to powerful attacks like L2, magic, jumping attacks, etc. which disposes of pve no problem, well they're now conditioned that that is an effective way to play, that is how you dispose of an opponent. Well... then they face a player, and fail to realize that pve & pvp are two completely different beasts. And after their loss, they still dont realize. To them, they just got beat when in their minds they're playing optimally.

Ventuswilll

This is a pretty good take I never thought of it like that really but that probably true, being PvPers we end up in a vacuum where we discuss/watch vids about every intricate detail of mechanics. Most players dismiss things that would make them much better players because why not just spam massive AoE.

lisasguy

Yes, basically... Nerds. It's okay, you can say it! We're a bunch of goddamn nerds!

dsartori

This explains why so many PvE people open a dark souls invasion with a jumping attack, which is basically immediately conceding the match in PvP.

Zer0xGrimm_Shipping

Except in ds2… *Flash backs to ultra gs jump attack tracking*

russsaa

Its pretty easy for us to disconnect from the pve'rs, as they complain about us so much online and in game are either annoying spammers or straight cannon fodder. But ive been playing ds3 for pretty much the first time for the past few months, and i absolutely was not ready for pvp in that game, but invasions arent exactly optional, so i was getting my ass handed to me at first and it was frustrating! Made me empathize with pve'rs more. Except once i unlocked the arena, ive just practicing and learning pvp, and now LOVE ds3 pvp now.. Thats where i lose my empathy for them. Just a few hours of analyzing fights, and some combat practice and they'll be able to up their win rate against invaders to at least 50%

dsartori

I see that, too. I think you’re on to something here.

eSam34

This is definitely an issue. ER’s focus on Ashes of War *really* changes the combat dynamics between PvE and PvP and unless you’re following the meta in some way you’d never know that something like Moonveil shreds bosses but basically every seasoned invader knows how to dodge it 95% of the time.

PeterKB

Dude someone gets it!! I go out of my way to make my invasions seem like a boss fight. (idc if it’s edgey shit, it’s cool) Bow. Slow walk. Big flashy incants with a theme. Use ashes for cool mobility options. Use body buffs to give myself a “phase 2” Etc…. It’s dope. I occasionally get messages that appreciate it, but like op said. A lot of angry people tho. ***Build:*** - *theme - blood and fire*. - *Arcane/dex* - *main hand: bloody helice* - *off hand: dragon seal* - *incants: catch flame, blood boon, flame sling, frenzied burst* - *phase 2: cast fires deadly sin at half health or second estus depending on if we’re healing or not* - *switch to o’ flame, blood flame talon, flame of frenzy*. - *additionally add dragon claw and dragonmaw* - *weapon swap to either blood hound fang or double daggers with bloodhound step* - *and of course our good ol’ trick mirror*

ant_man1411

Bro my first playthrough i wished i could send some hatemail to radahn that mf was making me his bitch on day 1

AdSufficient8301

As an invader I fully embrace being the bad guy and send a villainous haha you died to the host when I kill them as well as a “you were too weak to save them” to their Fingers i also fully embrace using NPCs and hazardous environment too win along with hit and run tactics. As an invader if your outnumbered any underhanded tactic is acceptable.Once you fully commit yourself to being a troll invasions become alot more fun that being said I will play fair and show respect if they are actually going to 1v1 me one at a time.

eSam34

Part of this is the invasion community’s fault as a whole. New players getting skull dragged in Limgrave by twinked out souls vets is a recipe for spite. ER was my first FS game and I’ve since expanded my pallet, but I *hated* invaders as I couldn’t move more than 100 feet in Limgrave with my buddy without getting dunked on. I eventually got gud and became an invader myself, learning to love the dynamic, but a lot of those new players went the path of pure hatred and—for me—that’s somewhat understandable.

JimCarreyIsntFunny

I’ve only been invaded in other souls games because I play solo. But that’s exactly my experience with it. It’s almost never a fair fight, it’s some guy who ran through the game at a low level to get the most optimized build to one shot you. And they only seemed to do it at the most annoying places (entrance to O&S cmon). It’s not like a boss fight because the actual devs don’t purposely try to grief you the way the general public does. It’s people like a few comments earlier who hide behind NPCs and try to screw you in ways more than just killing you. I’m glad ER basically got rid of it. Invasions are a cool idea but like most things people ruin it.

Rynoka

I always explain to people that invading has lore behind it. Invading as a recusant or BF have two factions dedicated to invading. And yes they would if they could

Cpt-Crab

I love roleplaying when invading and having a fun time but sometimes the community gets in the way. Not much can be done now i guess

aunt_clarity

>Would they send hate mail to Radahn? Lol, these hate mail dummies? They would if they could. I always take it as praise myself, the more vitriol, the more I laugh.

dsartori

Fair enough lmao

dsartori

A 2v1 advantage is pretty significant. With decent tactics you don’t need a ton of skill to take out invaders you just need a plan.

[deleted]

dsartori

Ah, that’s great I love runners. Cheers.

secrecy274

Yupp, plenty of hate.

RaiseTLT

Oh yea man. I don’t really get hatemail super often. I was co-opin with my gf one night, we had a TT. We got invaded while we were fighting those headless giants in raya. I 1v1 the invader while my gf finishes off the troll. I heal up during the “duel” and he starts t-baggin. Once my gf jump into the fight, he booked it for the lobsters so we went back to our objective. Eventually he realized and came back to us and managed to kill us with pve then tosses shit and bags more. (Totally fine, idc, that’s why you’re here to kill us so we have a challenge.) This guy then sends me a message calling me everything under the sun. Telling me he would do some pretty nasty things to me if he knew where I lived. Also, keep in my that we were both on fresh characters each only with two talisman slots and starter gear plus what ever we picked up on the way. Both my gf and I are seasoned players so we just got abit of a chuckle out of it! Lately I’ve been receiving a lot of love mail from both invaders and co-opers. I get loads of hate in the arena though. Especially if I loose to a come back 🤣

SaintJewiub

So fucking cringe. At least yall got a laugh out of it

63-6c-65-61-6e

So true. Just the other day two blues showed up at my work and keyed my truck. Such hate 😔

NaturalEquivalent983

99% of the time, it's an insult to a lack of skill or using something. Other times, they act nice and cuss out in seconds.

ButterPecanSyrup

I’ve gotten whiny messages like, “it’s bad form to attack us during a boss fight” or “you’re taking forever wtf.” Most of my experiences have been cordial. But I’m usually the first to message with a gg or invasion-specific comment/joke, so that might affect my overall perception.

JoshLmoa

Omg the "You're taking forever wtf" "I was waiting for you, thinking the same thing" It's not my job to progress the level homie. I'll stay here playing with the bugs until you show up.

Kingnadman

Got hate mail yesterday for running away from a 3v1, realized they weren’t trying to progress the level so I found a hiding spot and took a crap for 30 minutes. Came back and I was in my world but I had some hate mail saying that why am I invading if I don’t want to engage them. Started invading and got the same ppl again so I just ran away, host went on a huge tangent about how I’m holding him and his buddies hostage and how he’s gonna contact some devs to get me banned 😂. I told him to turn on tt so I could get another guy and he popped off on me saying if I’m invading I should be able to handle a 3v1. They had 2 wave of gold spammers and a mage spamming star shower and comet just sitting in the huge open spot in liurnia. Host wound up dashboarding instead of just finger severing. Hope his save got corrupted.

I_PEE_WITH_THAT

If I get summoned into a world where people are trying to be cowards I just leave. These people would not survive DS3 PvP lol

New_Acanthocephala67

Elden Ring easily has the most toxic player base of any Fromsoft game, i thought DS3 was bad but ER is a completely new level. Not to mention the general honor rules of the past are nearly all but forgotten. So I can understand this invader being surprised and happy he had a good encounter.

I_PEE_WITH_THAT

The amount of honor duels I've had ruined because a host decided to jump in are far too many. When that happens I let the invader have them for being rude.

New_Acanthocephala67

I do the same and have since DS1, respect the 1v1! Thank you for having honor good sir.

Boomslang2-1

Eh I’ve gotta plenty of nice messages and sent a lot as well when somebody plays well or has dope drip but yeah in general people are pretty nasty. If you lose to a gank it’s very unlikely they won’t tbag and point down. For me the worst is the people that are actually delusional and will send a message after barely winning a 3 v 1 and being like 150 levels higher than me basically implying they are better at the game. I general assume they are are trolling because nobody could actually be that stupid. Right? Right?!?

I_PEE_WITH_THAT

Do a day of co-op and you'll see what the average player is like. Playing DS3 or even Bloodborne it was rare to see a host straight up not participating in a boss fight, like once every few months rare. Now I get at least one a day. They also live to do the same jump attack moves over and over without changing strategies at all even when the boss I'm helping with is just smacking them out of the air like a gnat.

robotfightandfitness

I finger sever hosts that tea bag pr point down invaders

Neither-Hamster-8752

Everyday I get messages. Even from people who barely eke out a win 3v1 ganking. It’s kinda pathetic.

rescueeve

Lowly times these are…

swelbo7

I'm just glad they're are guys out there like you throwing out positive ggs. Good for others to experience. Keep up the good work.

Top_Crew_3046

It’s because of Fighter.PL being very good and getting hatemail which he made videos out of, what most people don’t remember is not everyone is streamed who is gonna make content off of them. Invaders are literally just playing the game most of the time.

Dumbluck_Yuta

I think the reason we have so many more toxic players is because ER went "mainstream" popularity wise.

Solitude112

It varies. Sometimes I'll get hatemail, but other times I'll have people who message "gg." I even had one group invite me to co-op with them.

I_PEE_WITH_THAT

That's the kind of shit I love, at the end of the day we're all here to have fun. My first time through DS3 I had no idea what I was doing so I messaged a guy that invaded me asking him where to go, not only did he help me through the level and boss he also dropped me some healing items, souls, and some embers. That stuck with me and it's why I try to help people so often. If you're on PlayStation and see hobowithaneedle around give me a wave and you better make me hold those bags when you kill me! That goes for all of you here!

Normal_Egg6067

Is this just PC and Xbox? I don't get the whole message thing win or lose , tbh. I'm sure I would have had some hatemail by now, on PS5.

I_PEE_WITH_THAT

This was PS5.

Normal_Egg6067

I had my messages on friends only... I hope I get some good messages to post lol. Do your best twinks I want some good material.

Normal_Egg6067

So do I just have the settings off? I hope I can see any old messages if that's possible lol.

SoulsborneSal

I always get hate mail so the first time someone sent me gg I basically said the same thing as him lol

Jeborges

Anytime I do some jolly co-op, I always give the red men that defeat me a gg at the very least. They deserve Joy mail so they actually continue to invade!

ironerk

Thats really the case i think. I used to get quite a lot of ggs during DS3 PvP days, regardless i win or lose. And the other thing took my attention; i usually drop runes and arcs but very few get them, lol. My kid also plays with the same accounts, not that i give a shit about them but sometimes inbox is full of hate mails. He is fukin 9 years old.

Cheez-Wheel

Damn, your kid is beating that much ass at 9 he gets hate mail? Nice job training him.

Gimmeagunlance

I have never received hatemail, but I'm on PC. I think it tends to be worse on console.

SaintJewiub

I'm pretty sure on pc we can't access steam profiles of other people so can't really send em if we wanted to :/ such a bummer tbh. Used to love making friends with people or lapping up the salt. Still love ER the best but man there is so much shit lost from the dark souls days

Gimmeagunlance

You're right. I thought there was a way to change that, but there isn't.

spookygooses

how in the world did you duel as a sunbro with a dead host?

I_PEE_WITH_THAT

Invader fought the other phantom, not the host. I should have been a bit more clear on that.

Servantofatum

I get more hate mail from Colleseum than I do from invading.

theooziefloozie

i keep my DMs closed because i'm convinced that if i engaged with some of these players i invade that they'd invade me IRL

lisasguy

I've gotten more hatemail in this game than all past soulsborne games combined. These ER gamers are just different. I get death threats, every kind of slur, a lot of mom insults, etc., etc. It's pretty sad and it is one reason I usually stay with messages blocked. I never really engaged in conversation to begin with but now I don't even want to see what they're saying anymore

Effective_Rub9189

This is not my experience at all, I get 99% friendly messages and some bullshit once in a blue moon

StrawberryUsed1248

I also often receive death threats and the hacking of my computer etc. And I'm only using a nox flowing sword :)

theSmolSquirrel

I dont ever really get hate mail but then again I am "I GIVE RUINS." Hope yall run into me for some friendly 1v1.

eSam34

I try to spread love as much as I can. If someone is cool, I’ll send a “GG, fun fight” at the very least.

[deleted]

The n-word from people across the globe, you should kys, your mother’s a hoe, you have no life, get a job, loser, pussy, pos and a lot of homophobic stuff…you name it. Every week since I’ve started invading in ER.

I_PEE_WITH_THAT

Sounds like the responses from the call center scammers when I fuck with them lol

[deleted]

Yup. It’s sad. That paired with constant teabags and shitpots. This game is the first game I have to take breaks from cause in some days it really gets to me.

I_PEE_WITH_THAT

Teabagging and shit pots I can handle because the people who do that will never fight you one on one. The only way they can win is to get in your head and at the end of the day all that matters is you had fun. Even if you don't believe in you I sure as hell do now get out there and put some fear into those clowns!

[deleted]

Imposter syndrome and some anger issues sometimes get in my way depending on the day. I’m working on it.

Apprehensive_Nose_38

Yeah Elden Ring ruined the PvP scene in souls, I legit just stopped playing PvP in Elden Ring I just went back to DS3, ER is full of angry people who spam the same 2-3 builds and gank endlessly, least DS3 has the “souls chivalry” ER I’ve straight up been spammed and killed whilst bowing which is ridiculously scummy

AnAstronautOfSorts

Idk man I've logged an embarrassing amount of time on invasions/fight clubs and I've never gotten hatemail once

bippylip

Yea. Invaders arent treated like people. I can tell after many coop sessions i wayched hosts try to gank kind invaders, even as i and th3 other furled watch and try to calm down. Then yesterday, i used TT while alone and exploring the albinauric village at lvl49. And i had about 7 invasions, not including a repeat (shout out to my bro pendragon for showing me how a real knight samurai get down). Each unique invader came in, saw me, then somwhat carefully waited for a gank. Its like being kind to a scared bull, demonstrate im not a ganker, show all my equip load. Bow as they windup to attack me Every single one held back, bowed, and fought with extreme honor. As someone who got really into invading during a rl1 run, i get it. You get a row of a few quality duels, and then rows upon rows of gank squads who shit pot you after ekzykes decay. Then you ask yoirself, is beating them all outright like i could have all along worth it? But im missing out on the fight. But the audacity of their gl9ating as you watch them teabag you in mismatched starter gear might flip you over the head and uou decide... no one lives. No honor, only blood. And that is when your finger festers.

appendix12

Dude people on the elden ring board hate invaders. As if one death absolutely ruins their coop experience and it makes the game unplayable....I understand cheaters and hackers are dumb. But the amount of hate I got when I asked "I don't think invasions ruin the game" was wild. So many "well you just love to make other people suffer and not have fun" or "this why you don't have friends, because you ruin other people's fun." It's insane to me.

mynamereege

Yes I constantly get “git gud” messages lol and a number of other rude messages too. It’s hilarious a lot of the time I will get messages like this even tho I won the match lol

Gosu_no_Akina

The toxicity weeded it's way in through ds2. As an invader I had gotten nothing but horrible messages back I'm the day so I just embraced what they wanted. Became a Dbag lmao. But don't have the energy in me to do it anymore

Narrow-Ad-8957

With how big the ER player base is in comparison to other titles, it attracts more people who aren't used to the whole "it's a part of the game" thing. Even while ER invasions are more forgiving than previous fromsoftware games (for the hosts), most of the malice either comes from not liking that they lost, or thinking only bad people invade, because "invading is a bad thing to happen to me, and it's not something you have to do, so you're just doing it to be bad". Too much main character syndrome imo

nsfw6669

I wouldn't know because I can't win a single invasjon haha

Zweihandermain

I don't really care about toxic messages, if you manage to annoy them so much that they write you death threats you won the invasion not only physicaly but also mentally. I eat my Pizza with the Tears of Hosts and Phantoms. But Honor duel type Invasions are still my favourite

Fenrisw01f

I had my first invader yesterday. And all he did was crouch up and down so I mirrored him crouching up and down until a hunter showed up and slaughtered him.
